10 Best Things to Do in Phoenix, From Bars to Bookstores | Condé Nast Traveler

"Palabras is an independent bookstore that rigorously curates its vibe and selection to elevate under-represented voices. Just about all communications from the bookstore are in English and Spanish, right on down to the text on its website. Within Palabras’ shared space, there are also a few other literary businesses, including a micro publisher and literary zine purveyor. The rigorously curated selection of books alone makes this one of the coolest small bookstores in the country. Try to time your visit with one of many incredible workshops, maybe an open mic session, a Diné creation story, or an author leading a multi-lingual reading. A reading area out back of the shop is little more than a patio, fostering an intimate environment. Owner Chawa Magaña has won a strong following of regulars—he customer base is diverse, with plenty of Latin and Indigenous representation. It’s a place where anyone who loves books and has an open mind can feel at home." - Chris Malloy

Google
Delightful, community-focused bookstore featuring work by Latinx, POC, LGBTQX, and other world writers. I've happily discovered writers I didn't know there. A large selection of Spanish language books, gifts, a coffee bar, and more. I support this store as much as possible. ¡Que Viva Palabras Bookstore!

Google
Really unique book store with a great mission that is seen all throughout the selection of books they have. I admire their commitment to highlighting BIPOC authors and maintaining a selection of books for Spanish speaking people. The only critique I can have about the store is that both times I've visited the bookstore, I didn't really feel welcomed by the staff. They're not the most outgoing people there, which threw me off for a shop that is focused on collective empowerment and community. They usually hid away in the back areas, which made it hard for me to go find an employee to get my purchases. It kinda felt like I was a nuisance being there. I thought it was just a one-off the first time, but the second time made it feel like it's gonna be constant every time I go. That's just a little nitpick. Other than that, I overall like the vibes of the store and what they offer. It's a bookstore like no other that I've been able to find in the PHX area and it should be supported.

Google
OMG, this place was such a wonderful find and we happened to stumble upon it. Everything about it was great!! The book selection was very satisfying, the art work is beautiful, the energy of the store is peaceful, there are nice seating areas and snacks for purchase. I love the importance of community and how it's reflected as well. The owners are very personable and you can see their passion reflected throughout the space. A Must Visit!! I wanted to purchase so many more books but I was traveling and my luggage was already a bit tight. Will definitely visit again in the future.

Google
Really beautiful and relaxing place to hang out. Very interesting selection of old and new books with a focus on literature, especially contemporary Latin America I Spanish and in translation. The art here is cool too, including on the store T-shirt!

Google
Great shop with a wide variety of Spanish and English books. Lovely front patio, and a simple cafe stand inside. I've picked up a few children's books as gifts and added some things to my own reading list.

Yelp
If happiness is a place, it's Palabras! Not only is the bookstore fabulous, but they also host events there that give back to the community and support us all. Their events have food/drink trucks of small business in the Valley, and they are always amazing! The bookstore has sections that focus LGBTQIA+, Black, Indigenous, and so many more authors and genres. Honestly, I would live here curled in a book nook! They also have a second room that is all bilingual focused, and a third zine making space/shop. If you're looking for a good bookstore, look no further! They've even got children's books! Honestly, best bookstore I've ever been to.

Yelp
Last time I've been here was 2019 but they recently relocated the beginning of 2021. Such an amazing place with many interesting finds. Many books with various genres in both English and Spanish. They have lots of little treats too such as stickers, pins, games to buy! Lots to find for either yourself or gift for others. Definitely coming back soon for more!

Yelp
A hidden gem in Phoenix carrying an array of awesome books, many of which I have only seen online. The staff is very nice and helpful. They also serve Quetzal co-op coffee and sell 16 oz bags of beans from the awesome coffee Co-op, which is an indigenous peoples project. I highly recommend visiting this unique book store. They sell new and used books.

Yelp

Yelp
I come here to get lost in this beautiful bookstore. The smell of old books and new puts a smile on my face. I went in today to pickup a copy of How the Garcia Girls Lost Their Accents. Left with that book and 8 other books. I found City of Beasts by Isabel Allende, and The Valkyries by Paulo Coelho and some other great finds. I can never leave here without a stack of books. But who's complaining about that! More to read! Lol. Support this awesome local bookstore! There is a coffee shop/store adjacent to it too!

Yelp
A charming used bookstore in downtown Phoenix. Walking in, I immediately fell in love with the vibe and atmosphere. There is an excellent selection of used books. The staff was friendly and helpful. I was in search of a good novel by S E Hinton. I asked the manager for help, was so sweet and full of stories from his past career. It was so lovely to connect with him and learn a little bit about him and the book store. I found a good novel and wa as very pleased with the friendly. My favorite was the scifi section; there was just something magical about the room. Filled with tons of old books, it took me right back to my childhood. If you haven't been, I highly recommend stopping by and supporting this gem in Phoenix.

Yelp
Palabras is a chillax hole-in-the wall with extra nice coffee and customer service. It's a cozy space to meet and chat and take bookbinding classes or just lounge, etc. There's a good selection of books, both in English and Spanish, and the parking is in the back. Just look for the Aqua building nextdoor. There's room for powerchairs/wheelchairs, though the front entrance is tight.

Yelp
Most bookstores offer a small Spanish-language section, but the inventory is not always well curated--so when I first learned about Palabras, I put it at the top of my list for my next visit to Phoenix. My Spanish is not great, but to maintain the proficiency I do have, I like to find graphic novels and other books in Spanish that are written at a fairly easy reading level. Since conventional bookstores don't always have what I want, travel in Mexico (and elsewhere in the Hispanophone world) has often been my fall-back for picking up the reading material I want. (I'm lucky to live about an hour from the border!) At Palabras, though, there's plenty to find. Besides being a great source for reading material, its walls serve as gallery space for some beautiful art, and there's a community room in back for various events. It's a great little space, and it's easily one of my favorite bookstores anywhere.

Yelp
This store is great. I'm trying to learn Spanish and they had absolutely everything I needed. The employee was super friendly and helpful and really knows his books! I had to make an appointment due to Covid and I really appreciated the safety steps in place. You will have no worries coming to this store.

Yelp
Amazing people, great books, atmosphere was welcoming. The process here are good and they have books in English and Spanish

Yelp
Palabras Bilingual Bookstore is such an amazing and fun bookstore! From a plentiful selection of books in Spanish in different topics to the Sana Sana Curandera care, Chawa and Jeff, the owners, get it. Palabras is more than a bookstore, it is culturally important, especially in the community it works within. Highly recommend everyone to check it out! There is nothing else like it in Arizona.

Yelp
I LOVE independent bookstores. This one is great. It has a good selection of books in Spanish, plus a good variety of socially conscious books as well. Very friendly staff. They just moved into their new site the day I visited, but even so were well organized and friendly.

Yelp
If you're looking for a bookstore to visit, go here. This is an amazing place that does a lot for the community. Highly recommend
