There's not many old school Chicago diners left out there. Those few that are have survived neighborhood poverty, the death of industry, political turmoil and urban decay just to have to do it all over again to survive political greed and gentrification. And those weren't even the tough times. I'm pretty certain the Palace Grill has seen it all. I started going to The Palace when I was a kid working on Madison Street's restaurant row a street that was lined with restaurant supply houses, warehouses and flop houses. I've frequented them all at one time or another. It was a rough neighborhood full of junkies, winos and many hard working but rough guys. Hard drinking, chain smoking, tough talking guys. I was one of those young guys who hauled equipment into restaurants and bars throughout the Chicagoland area. It was a great time in my life. The Palace Grill was a major part of that time. It always had the best coffee and ham sandwiches I can recall I've ever had not to mention their breakfast that couldn't be beat. After a hard morning at work we would cozy up to lunch with neighborhood guys from al walks of life. Back then it was a bit smaller and you had to wait for a stool at the counter or just order out and eat in our truck. The wait was always worth it.
30 years later I'm still going back. Back then as now it was known far and wide for its top notch food. You knew it was good because it was Greek owned and any real Chicagoan knows the best of the best are always Greek owned diners. You will always see George the owner whom I've met on several occasions though don't know well walking around greeting and sharing real talk with his customers. The decor is walls adorned Chicago Blackhawks heavy as should be with their home ice just a few blocks away. In Chicago we pay taxes to our feudal political lords and pay homage to our sports teams. They're kind of like the Robin Hoods of Chicago. It's not at all unheard of to catch a player inside having a bite. On the window sills are several photo books filled with photos from over the years of Palace Grill happenings, the family and events. Truly an original idea I've never seen elsewhere coast to coast. There have been no shortage of heavy hitters in entertainment, sports and politics hanging out within the walls. Now they've seen the neighborhood grow up and gentrify and lucky for us they stood their ground when some would have come with the wrecking ball.
The service is always quick and efficient with a smile. The servers probably know most of the customers that walk through the door and they know they're usually in for a quick breakfast or on their lunch hour. The bathrooms are clean as they get anywhere, a sign of what's gong on behind closed doors and a sure sign of success. In a neighborhood where you take for granted you're going to get a parking ticket Palace Grill has free parking in back and that alone is worth the price of entry. It's nice too as true to Chicago etiquette parkers aren't greedy with spaces and don't loiter. The menu is filled with old standbys and original offerings with generous portions of breakfast, (the very best ham and eggs you'll ever have anywhere) scrumptious lunch items and several specials going on. The best thing about the menu is the quality of the food. I challenge you to find better quality anywhere.
On this particular visit I stopped in for lunch with my friend. I went out of the box and chose the half roasted chicken and a side of onion rings with a bowl seafood gumbo to start. If there are two things in this world I like they are roasted chicken and soup, I'm like my ma that way. This gumbo whoa! I could have easily got away with a few bowls of gumbo and fresh bread as a meal. It was the real deal chock full o' rice and seafood flavor with minced shrimps. I'm not sure what other fish they made it with but it was obvious this was no beginner making this gumbo. I moved on to the roasted chicken and crispy onion rings with ranch. I'm not just saying this but this was the best roasted chicken I have ever had in my life and I travel city and suburb wide for roasted chicken. The half chicken was a huge portion while outside skin was crispy and lemon buttery, not dripping with grease as is often the case in many diners. One bite into and the meat was tender, moist and juicy. Many places dry it out, not at The Palace Grill. I can already tell you at this writing I'll be going back for the chicken very soon.
My friend had the beer battered lake perch and chips. Crisp, dark golden brown battered and flakey inside with fresh cut fries and homemade tartar sauce. I didn't get to taste her meal but from the looks of it I'll have to do Friday fish fry at The Palace Grill.
They even list their daily specials for weeks out. Talk about detail to menu planning. Hey, don't take my word for it, I'm just some punk kid who used to work on back of a truck. Go check out their menu online. Just get in there.
