Palazzo Circolone, Poggiardo, Puglia, southern Italy - Explore & Book

"Oh to be an Italian aristocrat! We can just imagine ourselves drifting through the palatial halls of this 18th-century mansion, pausing to admire frescoes of Roman mythology on the ceilings and oil paintings mounted in great gilded frames. This former palazzo has been home to merchants, lawyers and mayors, and is now in the hands of local renovator Mauro, who also transformed Palazzo Guglielmo in a neighbouring town. And what a fine job he’s done! The building’s glittering chandeliers still hang from the ceilings, old leatherbound hardbacks are exhibited in grand wooden bookcases, and the pretty orange grove still stands in the garden. History is lovingly remembered here. But the vibe is far from old-fashioned. The 12 guest bedrooms and suites are beautifully styled with soft neutrals blending vintage and modern furniture. The bar has climbing indoor plants and books on Vespas and Italian wines, with tables spilling onto a leafy terrace and an emerald-green classic car parked up in the corner – quirky! Salentine dishes are on the menu at the restaurant, and they have a decent selection of wines. Step outside and you’re on Poggiardo’s main square, the heart of this quaint Puglian town. Hop on one of the hotel's free bikes to explore, or drive to the pristine turquoise waters of the Salento coast. This is a delightful taste of quintessential Puglia, and we loved it. Highs Chock-a-block with restored original features: hand-painted frescoes, vaulted ceilings, chandeliers, mosaic floors Spacious light-filled bedrooms and plush bathrooms—one even has a private sauna! The outdoor pool, set in a peaceful walled garden with citrus trees, is the perfect spot to cool off in the summer The charming town of Poggiardo offers an authentic Puglian experience and is within 30 minutes drive of Lecce, Otranto, and beautiful beaches The friendly and attentive staff, especially Francesca, are eager to share expert tips on the best local spots. Lows Despite being in the centre of town, you’ll probably need a car for exploring the area, particularly if you want to head to the coast Although children are welcome, we feel the vibe of this former palace is better suited to couples No twin rooms, but the Suites have two double beds No in-room TVs - a conscious decision to avoid disturbing the tranquillity. Check out the books instead (and there's a TV in the relax room)" - Aidan Forestier-Walker

I didn’t really know what to expect from Poggiardo, but staying at Palazzo Circolone ended up being such a great surprise. The pool was a lifesaver in the summer heat, and the whole experience was super relaxing. My room was really spacious, and the bed was super comfy, exactly what I needed. Breakfast was included and a lovely touch, with a cute, local feel. I also ate at their restaurant, Civico13, and enjoyed it! They served great seafood and pasta, and their panna cotta dessert was delicious. I loved that there’s so much history here too, this place was originally a palace back in the 1700s and has now been beautifully transformed into a boutique hotel. If you’re here on a Wednesday, there are local markets set up nearby, which are fun to explore and wander through. Just a heads up, it’s much easier if you have a car since it gives you the freedom to explore nearby towns and beaches. Overall, I had a great stay and would absolutely recommend it!

We were three families who spent four wonderful days at Palazzo Circolone, and we couldn’t be more pleased with our stay. The rooms were spacious, beautifully decorated in a stylish yet traditional way, and spotlessly clean. The service was exceptional — a heartfelt thank you to Francesca and the rest of the staff for going above and beyond to make us feel welcome and cared for. The swimming pool was a lovely retreat on hot days, and the breakfast each morning was a real highlight: fresh, delicious, and beautifully presented. A truly memorable stay in a stunning setting — we hope to return!

Our family of 4 stayed 11 days at Palazzo Circolono in August. It's a beautiful and charming hotel. Our room was very spatious and clean. Breakfast was very good as well but some more variation for people staying longer than a few days would be welcome. Francesca is very customer oriented and gave us lots of practical tips and tricks to get the most of our stay in Puglia.

The most beautiful hotel in a renovated palazzo on a small square in the centre of Poggiardo. The rooms are gorgeous - spacious, high ceilings and great modern bathrooms. Breakfast is delicious. The pool area is also beautiful and relaxing. The hotel is in walking distance from several cafes and restaurants and there is a lovely bar in the lobby (excellent coffee). I was treated like a VIP guest and the staff were attentive, kind and helpful. For me this was a five star experience. Highly recommended, I will definitely return for a visit when in Puglia.

We were given perfect hospitality, welcomed and valued as special guests. The ambience is warm, the rooms are impeccable and classy, the common areas are delightful. Francesca and the rest of the staff were solicitous and genuinely cared about whether we were having a good experience. They could not have been more helpful. A wonderful stay.

We stayed here 9 days in September. We have enjoyed it very much. The rooms are big, cosy and clean. The staff is very friendly and attentative. The breakfast is typically Italian (sweet). There is only street parking but that was never a problem. The hotel is in the very heart of Poggiardo, although there is not much to do there (my humble opinion). But it's a good central location for daily trips to both coasts or Lecce.

This was a fabulous place with huge reception rooms and a beautiful bedroom with a painted ceiling, with doors opening onto a terrace. It was spotlessly clean, the bed comfortable and a large modern bathroom. The garden is quiet and pretty, and the swimming pool crystal clean and beautiful. |But best of all was Francesca, who communicated with me before the trip, welcomed us and looked after us with great charm and care from start to finish.|The breakfast was fabulous, with fresh ingredients (oranges from the trees in the garden); the coffee delicious, and all served in a pretty area (with the wood burning stove lit for us on a cool morning), with a smile by Fina.|We couldn't have had a better place to stay in Poggiardo.
