The Most Popular New Hotels of 2023

"A good boutique hotel strikes a balance between upending certain expectations while thoroughly fulfilling others. And a Venetian hotelier must be tempted to reject the whole ornate package of Gothic/Renaissance glamour that’s characteristic of the city. Palazzo Maria Formosa, however, chooses a route that’s more difficult, but ultimately more rewarding — it’s recognizably Venetian, but with an unusual depth of character." - Mark Fedeli

What a fantastic stay we had at this hotel. We arrived via water taxi, straight to the door of the hotel and felt immediately wowed by the entrance. We were upgraded on check in to a beautiful room due to it being our honeymoon. |We enjoyed a lovely cocktail by the attentive barman and the breakfast was fantastic. |Thank you so much! We will definitely be back soon.

This place is great! The location is really close to a late night gelato place. The front desk staff was very informative, giving us an introduction to the building and our suite. The rooms are newly renovated and have all the bells and whistles including a towel warmer. Would strongly consider staying here if it’s your first time in Venice (versus the other islands if you’re returning). Extra bonus is a coin-op laundry a short few minutes walk away.

Loved my stay at Palazzo Maria Formosa. Everyone at the hotel is incredibly professional and always willing to accommodate your wishes. For instance, they assigned me the exact room I asked for — a lovely room overlooking the charming Venetian square of Maria Formosa. They also arranged a reliable water taxi that picked me up from the airport and conveniently dropped me right outside the hotel deck.||The rooms are pristine and lovely and have every amenity you can think of—balancing modern comforts with the Venetian charm of olden days. Other hotel areas also reflected this delightful blend of traditional and contemporary aesthetics.||Another upside is that you can walk everywhere from the hotel—everything is just a short 10-15-minute walk away. They also provide a bespoke map to help you navigate through the charming, albeit narrow, Venetian alleys (which I loved using more than Google Maps).||Another memorable part of my stay was watching gondolas and water taxis glide by from the seating area—which truly captured the essence of Venice for me!

It was hard finding the hotel. The rooms, staff, and food were amazing. The front desk was very helpful. My only complaint is that the air-conditioning didn't get cold enough and shut off in the evening, so we had to open all of the windows. It was noisy outside until after midnight and again early in the morning because the restaurants nearby were putting chairs and tables outside. I didn't sleep well because of that. The beds were very comfortable, and so were the pillows. They provide shampoo, conditioner, and body wash, so there's no need to bring any. There were two robes and slippers in the room. There was a Nespresso machine with pods, a tea kettle, tea bags, and sugar provided as well.

In the spirit of the very best Relais & Chateaux, Palazzo Maria Formosa is a throwback to a classic era. It’s cool. Think Fellini cool, or Talented Mr. Ripley cool. Away from the throngs of tourists, but close enough to make all the top sites less than a 10 minute walk. Would definitely go back. Exceptional staff. Who It’s For: Quiet couples, honeymooners, foodies, people who like the front desk knowing your name, fastidious German speakers used to Swiss service. Who It’s Not For: Yellers, buffet people, teen groups What Makes it 5*: Exceptional concierge and front desk can recommend restaurants and sort out bookings even if unavailable, water taxi dock, 24 hour room service, extremely spacious rooms for Europe, luxury finishings throughout, multiple languages spoken. What could be better: No courtyard, pool, gym, or traditional American 5* amenities.

Amazing stay, exceptional service and quality. Classy hotel but also very comfortable. Really well positioned as most of the main attractions are walking distance but also in a more calm part of town. The breakfast lived up to the hype and was faultless. Rooms very chic and well equipped. Highly recommend.

Beautiful building turned into a hotel. Rooms were spacious and beautifully decorated. The staff was great. If you are interested in doing anything, ask the Concier. They were helpful getting us a tour of the glass factory.

One of the cleanest hotels I've ever stayed in! From the lobby floor, to the staircase and following up to the room, everything was sparkling clean. The bed and pillows were comfortable (no fear of bedbugs in this establishment!), the shower pressure worked, the room was dark and quiet at night and into the morning. I'm not a huge breakfast-included fan as I like exploring the local cafés, but the breakfast in this hotel is really worth it. The selection they offer is insane and the taste of what is served, insanely good. Location also great. Rooms a little smaller than what they seem in the pictures, though, and if you ask for restaurant recommendations, the concierge will send you to places that I think are owned by the people who own the hotel as the dishes and menus were very similar (Orto di Mori and Luna Sentada).
