4 New Hotels to Book in Rome Now - AFAR

"The intimate Palazzo Roma is part of the Shedir Collection, which is behind Hotel Maalot and Hotel Vilòn. With just 39 rooms, it’s like an intimate jewel box on the city’s busiest thoroughfare, Via del Corso. The transformation of this 16th-century palazzo into a five-star hotel involved the restoration of original frescoes in the restaurant, where you can feast on seasonal specialties under dazzling chandeliers. Request one of the rooms on the piano nobile, which have impressively high ceilings, bespoke furniture, and marble bathrooms." - Laura Itzkowitz

"Though many dream of palaces fit for a king, finding an undiscovered one these days is a tall order. Enter Palazzo Roma, a bona fide 18th-century palace turned boutique hotel and the latest (and most dazzling) debut from the buzzy Shedir Collection, owned by J.K. Place cofounder Eduardo Safdie. Hidden away on the southern stretch of the iconic Via del Corso in the heart of Rome’s ever-bustling historic center, the 39-room showstopper melds incomparable architectural details—lavishly restored frescoes, intarsia wood ceilings, a baronial marble staircase—with a distinctly modern sensibility (and a 1,000-plus-piece art collection) to jaw-dropping effect. This is all thanks to the singular vision of Milan-based designer Giampiero Panepinto, the aesthetic maestro who designed the restaurant at Hotel Vilòn, its achingly chic sister property just a short stroll away. The palatially proportioned rooms boast 16-foot ceilings, splashy color palettes, and colossal bathrooms honed in rare marbles that would wow Caesar himself, while the common areas delight and surprise: A statue of Euterpe, the Greek Muse of music, presides over the striking Salla de Musica, the palace’s former ballroom-cum-lobby. Meanwhile, more than 100 timepieces beckon in the azure-hued Clock Room, a prime perch for an aperitivo and fresh-fried arancini from Core—the fresco-wrapped, chandeliered restaurant—after a day spent pounding Rome’s black-cobblestoned streets. In a city teeming with new five-star hotels, this storied stunner just may be the jewel in the crown. From $980. —Alex Kirkman" - CNT Editors

Palazzo Roma

"Why book? In the Eternal City, where a new five-star hotel has cropped up seemingly daily in recent years, the property is something truly singular: a spectacularly refurbished, early 18th-century palazzo, awash with newly restored, pastel-hued frescoes, showstopping artworks, and centuries-old antiques–offering palatially proportioned rooms fit for royalty, smack in the heart of the buzzing historic center. Set the scene Spanning four floors of a grand building once owned by the Roman noblesse near the southern end of Via del Corso–the city’s ever-bustling main artery, stretching from Piazza del Popolo to Piazza Venezia–the hotel offers an almost otherworldly respite from the controlled chaos just outside, where throngs of pedestrians jockey for space on the narrow sidewalks as Vespa brigades whiz through the traffic. Guests span a well-heeled mix of international tourists and Italians keen to revel in the hotel’s storied roots and rarefied ambience. The backstory A member of the Shedir Collection–a relatively new luxury hotel group cofounded by real estate magnet Eduardo Safdie, a cofounder of J.K. Place–Palazzo Roma marks the collection’s fifth opening in central Rome since 2018. Its sister properties include Hotel Vilòn, a 17-room jewel box that overlooks the gardens of Palazzo Borghese a few blocks away, and the Maalot Roma, a colorfully chic escape steps from the Trevi Fountain and the former home of famed opera composer Gaetano Donizetti. The rooms The 39 rooms (including three rooftop suites, each with its own terrace) combine striking architectural details–like impeccably restored intarsia wood ceilings and impossibly ornate crown moldings–with custom-made four poster beds, bespoke fabric wallpapers, and a wide-ranging collection of head-turning objets to dazzling effect. A vibrant color palette of bold greens, dusky pinks, peacock blues–touched off with plenty of black accents and rarefied Giacobazzi woodwork–amplifies the property’s wholly original juxtaposition of heritage and modernity. A particular highlight: the colossal bathrooms, all unique and honed in rare marbles, will make you instantly feel like an emperor (or at least a contessa). Food and drink A refined culinary take on la dolce vita begins at breakfast at Core, Palazzo Roma’s lavishly frescoed all-day restaurant, where towers of fresh baked madeleines, Caprese cake, and cream-filled bomboloni (Italian donuts) beckon beneath sparkling 18th-century Venetian chandeliers. Don’t miss the La Gricia (poached eggs, pecorino mousse and crispy guanciale), a scrumptious Roman riff on eggs Benedict. After a long day pounding Rome’s black sampietrini cobblestones, retire to the Hall of Clocks–filled with a collection of more than 100 timepieces–for a Roman Spritz (Amaro, prosecco, orange bitters, mint, and rosemary) or Red Passion (crème de Cassis, champagne, and house-made raspberry foam), accompanied by cacio e pepe potato chips and mini pizzette. Inspired dinner selections include starters like Amberjack carpaccio with tuna roe and basil, linguine with Sicilian red prawns and smoked mozzarella, and braised beef cheek with carrots and Jerusalem artichokes. The neighborhood/area You’d be hard-pressed to find a better base from which to explore bella Roma’s iconic sites and myriad charms: the Trevi Fountain, Pantheon, and Spanish Steps (to name just a few) are all a short stroll away, as are the glittering shops lining the Via Condotti, the city’s most celebrated fashion destination. The service Service is attentive yet subtle–and, in characteristic Italian fashion, unfailingly warm. Don’t be surprised if a plate of bite-size arancini magically appears before you while you’re enjoying a glass of crisp Frascati in the Music Room–the palace’s opulent former ballroom that now serves as the hotel lobby–under the watchful gaze of plaster busts of maestros like Beethoven, Rossini, and Toscanini. The concierge team can arrange experiences including a helicopter ride to the ancient town of Tivoli to survey its sprawling villas, elaborate gardens, and impressive waterfalls from the sky, as well as a private tour of the UNESCO-inscribed Stadium of Domitian, the first and only masonry athletics stadium in Roman history, located 15 feet below Piazza Navona. Eco Effort Sustainability efforts in the works include energy-saving lighting, touchless faucets, and limiting plastics on-property. Accessibility There are two mobility accessible rooms. Anything left to mention? For a rightly aristocratic experience, skip the elevator and opt for the hotel’s magnificent Carrara marble and travertine stairwell, whose grandeur rivals that of those found in the Vatican Museum. The rooms facing the Via del Corso aren’t entirely soundproofed (yet)–if you need silence to snooze, request an interior one." - Alexandra Kirkman

This is the second year we've been to this hotel and both times we've had the most pleasant stay. The location is great, close to everything. The rooms are very spacious and amazingly decorated. The bathroom is also spacious and comfortable. The breakfast is out of this world, great quality, fresh ingredients and a good variety. Margherita is the best at providing an exceptional service at the restaurant while being kind and professional. Ricardo, the front desk manager is also very professional, courteous but warm, always giving the best concierge advices along with Antonella, his assistant. Looking forward to our next stay!

Stayed here for 3 nights The hotel staff were very accommodating and polite, always doing a little extra which was very nice. They helped with tour bookings, restaurants and museum suggestions. Great attention to the details in everything, starting from location, design and ending with service! Would like to add that location of the hotel is on busy street, very near all the popular places, but even with the sounds from the streets, when you are inside the room - everything blocked out. Thanks a lot to the Palazzo Roma team to make our stay memorable!

We stayed 2 nights at the stunning Palazzo Roma to celebrate our wedding anniversary. Previously, in Rome, we’ve stayed in some of the bigger 5 star hotels but this time, we wanted a smaller, more intimate experience and Palazza Roma delivered this and much more.||Stunning hotel with a fabulous mix of tradition and contemporary with quirky decor and art. Beautiful bedroom with lavish marble bathroom (and the best slippers we have ever had in a hotel!). ||But what really sets Palazzo Roma apart from other hotels is the outstanding service. Claudia was incredibly helpful booking restaurants for us. Oliver gave us useful tips and daily suggestions for activities. Beatrice, Gabriel & Rebecca and Nicolo were all fantastic at breakfast and in the bar attentively taking care of my special diet - they went above and beyond to ensure that I did not miss out on delicious food, despite it being a challenging diet!||Huge thanks to all the staff for a truly wonderful stay.

An amazing experience. From the moment we arrived until we left the service had been second to none. Thw rooms were very clean, quiet and well appointed. Breakfast was amazing and the general manager Oliver made a point of saying hello to each guest every morning. It's well worth staying at the Palazzo Roma. I know we will stay there again when we are next in Rome.

Located in the beating heart of Rome, just a few steps away from the most iconic attractions, this hotel enchants from the moment you enter with its historical elegance and chic touch, embellished by fine artwork and an amazing deco. The rooms are meticulously designed, cosy and quiet. The staff is distinguished by courtesy and professionalism, with a concierge service that is over the top, always available and extremely competent. The breakfast is an experience in itself for its decor and elegance. The breakfast menu is rich, varied and of the highest quality. A wonderful experience, a truly impeccable 5-stars luxury stay in a very iconic place which will make your time in Rome unforgettable.

Can't say enough good things about this spot. From Oliver the manager on down, service was top notch. Rooms are tastefully done with all the most modern conveniences. Breakfasts are outstanding and the restored palace reeks of tasteful opulence. Walkable to many of Rome's finest sites and a short cab ride to the others, you will not be disappointed with your stay here.

The Palazzo Roma has been one of best hotel stays ever. The hotel is stunningly beautiful and the attention to detail incredible. Each area has it's own theme, from the Music Room, to our floor lobby, which has an astronomical theme. The staff is outstanding! Shout out to Mohammed, Oliver, Margherita and the maid service. Breakfast was the best we have ever had.

We had a wonderful stay! The hotel is perfectly located, just a short walk from the main monuments and all the city's attractions. The building itself is a stunning historic palace, beautifully restored — modern and comfortable, yet still preserving the charm and history of the place. The rooms are spacious and tastefully furnished. Breakfast is simply amazing — you can really tell how much care goes into offering fresh and delicious food. The same goes for the restaurant, which we were lucky enough to try and absolutely loved. Service is impeccable: the staff are incredibly friendly and made us feel very welcome from the very beginning. We honestly couldn't have asked for a better experience. Thank you so much — we look forward to coming back soon!
