"Palenque, the casual Mexican restaurant formerly known as Veracruzana, feeds everyone from the late-night crowd in need of chilaquiles and french fries at 1am to families sharing chimichangas. Every table at this place in the Italian Market gets a trio of housemade salsas that work well on earthy, mildly sweet enchiladas de mole, massive tortas, and reliable but unremarkable tacos. The must-order, though, is the spicy camarones al ajillo served with red rice to soak up a chipotle cream sauce. It's so good that we’ve picked it up twice since dining in, which might just be the best way to eat here, seeing as service can run on the slow side." - Alison B. Kessler

I went here twice and really enjoyed my experience. The food was all incredible, except the Tres Leches, which shocked me. The Brisket in the Birria was very tender and flavorful, the chicken in the Nachos I got was juicy and flavorful. Everything was fresh except for the Tres Leches. The service is phenomenal! The restaurant is very comfortable, welcoming, and kept very clean. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND CHECKING THIS PLACE OUT! I just don't recommend the Tres Leches.

Definitely the best traditional Mexican food I have had in Philadelphia. The street corn and mole are must tries. The chef said the mole takes 15 days to prepare but it’s worth every minute. All the sauces were delicious and our tacos were the best I have had. The place is a BYOB and serves food until 2am on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. Great hidden gem on Washington Ave and 9th streets in South Philadelphia.

It doesn't get any more authenticity than this. This place was highly recommended by a regular and I see why. My quesadilla was amazing.

Great food, very supportive with many gluten free options (not marked on the menu but staff is very thorough and can walk you through the menu). When ordering take out with my family, my gluten free order is separated and marked as gluten free, and I appreciate the effort. One note: they do not have a dedicated gluten free fryer, so avoid the tortilla chips if you are sensitive.

Beautiful place, it has murals that represent Mexican culture and well-distributed spaces. All portions are big, by the end we were stuffed with delicious food. They have fresh waters and typical Mexican desserts as well. Without a doubt, the star dish is the mole, which is made from scratch by the chef of the place. There is a wide variety of food options with the authentic Mexican flavor. Everything is very well presented. The service was impeccable, fast and informative.
