Where to Find Italian Bakeries With Zeppole in Chicago | Eater Chicago

"This Italian bakery offers one of the most extensive selections of zeppole in the area, serving classic varieties made with apricot, cannoli filling and lemon ($3.25) along with gourmet versions stuffed with pistacchio ricotta, Baileys Irish cream or Nutella ($3.95). They even offer cake-sized cannoli or custard zeppole ($30)." - Sam Nelson

We tried a plethora of things from Palermos. Unfortunately nothing truly stood out. Of the things we tried: *one pound of italian cookies The pine nut cookie was best received of the assortment we had. Some of these cookies were super soft and lacked a true cookie texture. *cheese danish. It was okay, and nothing against them, but in recent weeks I've had cheese danishes from 2 other bakeries that were superior to this one. *cheese/nutella stick. Thought it was a churro initially, probably wouldve been better if it was. Definitely needed to be filled a little more. *Arancini. Similarly to the danish, had one of these from another nearby bakery that was just superior and better filled. We also bought a foccacia round which was nice and easily the best thing we purchased. Some of the prices on things like cakes and the cookies (by the pound) I thought were high, but smaller things like danishes and breads seemed very reasonable. I did not see any markdown racks or discount items here. The young man assisting us was very helpful and patient with us as we decided which cookies we wanted. So the service was notably good and the cases looked very appealing.

The cake was beautiful. My photo does not do it justice. The canoli cake was large, fresh, moist and delicious. I had an eclair there was well. Awesome. Will I be back? Yes, I can't wait.

Google
I walked into Palermo Bakery to order a cake for a Quinceanera and I knew more or less what I wanted but the nice young lady helped me pick out a cake design from Pinterest and to my surprise the cake came out so beautiful! I want to thank the cake decorator or decorators for doing such an amazing job. Everyone love the cake!!!!!

Google
5 star cookies but 3 star cake. This review is for both cookies and cakes. There decorated butter cookies are beautiful. I've used them a few times to order cookies for parties and am never disappointed. They come bagged and ready when you pick them up. A little pricey for each cookie but there priced about the same from other bakeries. Now there cakes I can only speak about my experience and no one else's. I ordered two cakes one was ube filling and the other canolli. No one at the party liked either one. The sponge was dry and didn't taste fresh on both. The fillings were okay. Since I paid a bit more than I would have been at other bakeries, I was very disappointed. So, to answer any questions, yes! I ordered the cakes ahead of time. NO! they were not picked up from a display case. Yes! At the party canolli and ubi were not new flavors to them.I threw more than half the cakes out i was sad. They were beautifully decorated, though. So because of that I gave a 4 star.

Today was my first time there and all the things I bought were so good!! I bought the apple pumpkin kolacky, the cheese bread by the entrance, and cheese coffeecake. I can't wait to get more sweets!!

Google
We have never been this store and decided to give it a try. The store looks so nice and clean. When we first stepped in to the store, we could smell the delicious foods there. Staffs are so friendly and there are many choice for customers to choose. If you are around the area, highly recommend to stop by and give it a try.

Google
I went a second time this weekend. Again, everything was great. Some customers had a hard time following 2 simple directs 1- take a numer 2- wait for your number to be called. The employees did great despite the chaos of customers not following directions. I bought less this time but everything taste marvelous! -------------------- First time here. My brother recommended it because his boss had given him canolis from there and loved it. Customer service was great. The employee who helped was really nice and had a lot of patience with me because I had a hard time deciding. As long as the customers follow the "wait here until being called" sign, everything will move smoothly. I bought $60 of dessert. So far, I tried the apple cider donuts, and they were delicious! So I'm sure everything else will be too.

Google
I 🩷 Palermo bakery! I saw on their instagram that they have pupo con uovo. My Nonna used to make them every year, but is unfortunately no longer with us. This would be our 4th Easter without them. We called Palermo first thing this morning to put in an order. We also ordered Iris, which they didn’t have today but made 10 for us, on a super short notice. (WOW!) I picked up the order, and all of the employees were so kind and welcoming. (As always). I also got a slice of eggplant pizza, which I devoured before even making it home. (Amazing). we were absolutely blown away when we got home and opened the boxes. The iris are HUGE, and very generously filled! We split a pupo con uovo in half, not having very high expectations. (What’s better than Nonna’s baking?) to our surprise, they were absolutely perfect. The best pupo con uovo we’ve ever had. (Sorry Nonna.) we also picked up a reginella cake here 2 weeks ago, which was phenomenal as well. Thanks to Palermo, this will be the best Easter we’ve had in years. I definitely recommend following them on social media, they always post what they’re making for the day. Will be stopping by every weekend going forward :)

Yelp
For an Italian bakery they sure do polish paczki amazingly. This treat is only made once a year so it is a must stop in the morning for Fat Tuesday. There zepoli and other Italian treats are also great. This is a local gem in an area which is blessed with far to many amazing bakeries. The staff is always very friendly and efficient in getting you taken care of. My only critique would be the lattes are a pass. The drip coffee was fine but the latte was a pass.

Yelp
Very nice bakery with a huge selection! I loved the cannolis, but some of the cookies were a miss for me. We also ordered cream puffs and a chocolate eclair, and they were yummy. The staff were helpful and efficient, and while the interior is a bit cramped, it didn't bother me.

Yelp
Fresh and so delicious! I ordered (giving 24 hr notice) via Uber Eats the pictured cookie 5lb tray and cannoli chip tray as a break treat for a training class of 35 adults. Everything tasted as delicious as it looks! I'm SO happy with the variety of cookies and the presentation, as well. Highly recommended.

Yelp
Perhaps my new gold standard for sfogliatelle--super fresh, with a crispy top and maybe slightly caramelized bottom. Slight hint of orange to add a depth to the filling, which was somehow rich without being overly too creamy. Cannoli also excellent, comparably crisp.

Yelp
I got this ricotta cake, it was so delicious! Place has tons of great Italian finds though! So much to choose from. Also got some biscotti and some lemon cake. Service was super fast and friendly.

Yelp
We have tried many of their treats in the past year, and almost all have been fabulous. We have also purchased a few Too Good to Go bags. The only items we were so/so on were the decorative cookies. They were as gorgeous as the day is long, but the flavor is just meh. What I love is that even when they are busy, service flows well. It's easy to want one of almost everything in the shop! Their cake pops are outstanding!

Yelp
Fresh Italian bakery, local, friendly, absolutely delish in every way possible. Been coming here for years and truly never disappoints. Fresh breads, custom cakes, great for a lovely gesture, a party, or for a weekend donut with your coffee. Always festive, and displays the artisan touches of every item.

Yelp
I have enjoyed products from Palermo Bakery over the years. It's about time that I wrote about this establishment in Norridge, just a wee bit west of Harlem Irving Plaza. It seems that whatever we have tried has been good, and that includes cannoli, paczki, cream puffs and other assorted pastries. In case you are not familiar with Palermo Bakery, perhaps you have come across some of their goodies at your local Mariano's grocery. Yesterday we purchased a variety of zeppole (lemon custard, rocky road, pistachio white chocolate, banana Nutella). We have not tasted all of the flavors yet, but boy we are looking forward to doing so! These Italian treats are like large delicate cream puffs, with pillowy pastry framing the generous creamy fillings. It was fun to share the different zeppole with my love. We also enjoyed the focaccia bread, tasty but not too greasy. Palermo bakes some beautifully decorated cookies, and I look forward to trying their arancini (and probably a few other items) next time I go there.

Yelp
I was contacted by one of my subscribers telling me that I needed to try this fantastic bakery. I am always open to try new places or suggestions that my subscribers send that they would like me to review. The name of this bakery is Palermo's in Norridge. The location of the bakery is right next to the famous Rolling Stone Records. The moment that you walk in you are transported to an old school, Italian bakery. I was greeted by the fifth generation owner Biagio Greco. While I looked at all of the delicious pastries that were on display, I spoke with Biagio about his beautiful bakery. We talked about how his family has been at this location for over a decade. His family has generations of experience in the Italian bakery space going back to Italy. I could see visually that these pastries were absolutely gorgeous. I have many times run into the problem where pastries look very good, but when you take a bite into them, they taste awful. I was at first worried that I would come to this problem. They just looked too good to be true. I could not wait any longer. I had to try one of my favorite Italian pastries, the Zeppole. The first bite I was in absolute sugar bliss. The filling custard was so decadent and flavorful, but not overly sweet. The pastry was so light and flaky and extremely fresh. It was so perfect in every way. I am so mad at myself that I did not come here earlier and make this my go to spot for all Italian pastries. They have over a dozen different Zeppole flavors that they have on special for Saint Joseph's Day coming up. They also are running a special this Saturday, March 11 from 3 PM to 5 PM where all Zeppole are half off. I did not stop with just trying the Zeppole. I also tried their Italian cookies. Again, I was blown away. They were so fresh and delicious. I cannot stress enough for everyone to come and try Palermo's in Norridge out for themselves. This is a top-tier Italian bakery with extremely friendly service. The quality and care can be tasted in all of their food. I give palermos a rare 10 out of 10 rating. This is my new spot for all my Italian pastry needs. Next time you stop in, tell them the Chicago Food King sent you.

Yelp
Sent my honey to get me a birthday cake and specified a ricotta based cheesecake with strawberries. Came back with a beautiful and delicious cake with a layer of sponge cake. Perfect flavors, subtle, sophisticated, and begging for some espresso! a great bakery makes the world a better place!

Yelp
Palermo bakery made the most beautiful and amazing cake for our sons 2nd birthday. The ordering process was seamless, the staff is always so kind and professional. I frequent this location for baked goods and sweets fairly often, and their products are always amazing. This is THE place for a custom cake. Thank you for making such a memorable cake that was everything we asked for, and was also delicious. Everyone loved it

Yelp
My family and I enjoy their cookies. I came in today, I've been in a few times and usually the person that takes my order is helpful and welcoming. Today the woman who helped me was rude and seemed annoyed that I was there. I felt so uncomfortable picking out the cookies. She made me want to cancel the order. I hope next time I come in I feel welcomed and not a bother.
google avatar

Annette B.

Yelp
Such a gem!!!! I visited this location for the first time recently and loved the cookies I bought; however the cannoli-filling zeppole was AMAZING and on sale! I can't wait to go back!

Ana G.

Yelp
Palermo's Bakery made 40 cake pops for our rehearsal dinner in March 2024. They did a fantastic job! They stayed in communication through the entire process and made pick-up easy. The cake pops were so delicious! I only have one photo (from their bakery) because my guests and I were too excited to eat them. I'll definitely use Palermo's services again for future events!
google avatar

Justin J.

Yelp
This is a wonderful bakery with an assortment of items. We've gotten cakes from here twice and each time it was delicious! I would recommend a two layer cake over a 3 layer cake just based on my own taste. However, Palermo just knows what they're doing and there's a reason why they are always busy whenever I visit. Even when they are busy, every baker makes it a point to be personable and friendly. Be confident in following your gut because you can't really go wrong.

Yelp
I grabbed some baked goods to celebrate and indulge for Chinese new year. We got some Arancinis, some pazcki, some cookies they made for Chinese new year, a lobster tail, apple turnovers and some sesame cookies. I'm mostly gluten free but would definitely come to get a gluten fix from here.

Yelp
The Bakery is one of the Best around but I think that some of the People working behind the Cash Register need to be more Pleasant and Friendly to the Customers

Joana C.

Yelp
Big fan of sandwich Saturdays. The mafalda bread, mortadella and pesto sandwich last week was so good. Hoping it'll be back again. Also bought a few slices of the tres leches cake with sandwiches this weekend and everyone enjoyed them.
google avatar

Yvonne O.

Yelp
Stopped in after seeing so many Facebook videos on my feed for the place. Lots of options, but it will get pricey. Staff is very nice and helpful in suggesting options. Go with the daily specials - Wednesday was $2.50 cannoli! I got a pre-boxes pound of cookies, another 2 pound I chose, some rainbow pizelle, two cannoli and some tomato bread rounds and it was $65. Parking can be tricky as this is right on Irving and traffic gets busy, plus some spots are reserved for the driving school - I'd suggest not coming during rush hour - but about 8:30 was easy enough!

Yelp
Had to check this out after all the great reviews! So happy to find authentic Sicilian bakery! Everything looks fresh and tastes like heaven

Yelp
Bakery goods were good but counterperson not so nice. Said her name was Kimberley. Treated us poorly and seemed put out that she had to wait on us. Gave me a bad feeling to deal a her. Needs a course in customer service.

Yelp
Coworker got these for a meeting, my first time trying them. They were so fresh. So creamy and crispy at the same time. Wow

Yelp
Really nice bakery ... picked a cake and treats for work. They looked really good and my colleagues said they tasted good. I will certainly stop again , the person who helped me was very sweet and professional

Yelp
Well hello sweetie's! We stopped into Palermo Bakery and some of their sweet treats made their way home with me. From breads, cookies, tons of pastries and cakes, Palermo Bakery has a wide variety that will satisfy anyone's sweet tooth. There are lots of Italian sweets options as well as Arancini, Focacia, Sub Sandwiches and Pizza. There are so many different options for cookies here that it is extremely hard not to walk out of here with some of each. Customer service here is always exemplary. Even though they can get really busy, the wait home is normally pretty short. Need a specialty cake? They can easily accommodate you. Love supporting local businesses, especially delicious ones.

Yelp
My sister went to this bakery yo bring me treats! The picture of the box had cookies inside... I should have taken pictures of the cookies ... next time! For the record the variety of cookies were delicious! The sesame and lemon iced cookies are my favorite ! The other pastry in the picture was a Zeppo usually sold at St Joseph time! The custard was delicious but the dough was a little soggy ... it could have been since my sister travelled with it to our house with ice for a two hour drive ... when I can I will travel to pick something up! They have lunch items and soup also... I will see if they ever have Italian bread pizza ! Will have to get Italian crust bread also... Yum!

Yelp
The goodie box for 20.20 is worth it for a small gathering or just spread it around with your family at home. Such a great assortment. I mentioned there were kids, but the box was for my friends 41st birthday so they offered to include cookies. They even made a little plaque that said Happy Birthday and her name. She was happy and so we're her kids and parents too! Pretty sure her fella found something he liked too. Next time I'm gonna let it ride and see what they normally would fill it with.
google avatar

Gianna B.

Yelp
Ordered cake and they fulfill orders within 24 hours as long as they have the sponge available! We ordered a 10 inch yellow cake with strawberry and cannoli filling and boy was it FILLED! So tasty. We almost thought it was bigger than 10 inches because it looks way bigger than strawberry cannoli cakes from other bakeries.... Must be what a 10 inch cake looks like with proper filling!! 10 inch cake is $50.00.

A D.

Yelp
Excellent pastries and focaccia. Friendly staff. Was able to get a parking space right in front of the bakery.
google avatar

Sal C.

Yelp
They have very good pastries and the arancini are a must try. Prices are pretty reasonable. The only problem some of the staff members have an attitude. I felt like I was a bother walking in. They should make people feel comfortable. At the end of the day were paying you for your service and goods. And being respectful and courteous goes a long way.

Caffe L.

Yelp
just bought 2 Cartocci from them on 12/13/22 typical sicilian sweet, very disappointed on quality and freshness. once I cut open in two the cartoccio I noticed that a 1/3 of the ricotta cream feeling was not there on both pieces, so it is done on purpose, they do not feel the piece alway but just on the outside. Not only the price doubled to the consumer (us) they (Palermo Bakery) decided to even put less product to make even more money, this is how this place make money by stealing from their clients. I will never return to a place like this just because they are stealing from their clients and quality is not good either way or any originality. hope you take my review and avoid this place. Thanks

Weet W.

Yelp
Huge selection and everything I tried was good. Brought a bunch back to work and everyone loved it. The key lime, and tres leches are personal favorites.
google avatar

Izzy D.

Yelp
Definitely recommend this bakery always fresh and all of their bakery goods are delicious but the paczki's are my favorite especially the strawberry and whipped cream. Also the chicken paczki with the honey Sriracha syrup is very delicious
google avatar

Steve B.

Yelp
Just bought 2 cupcakes from them looking for a local bakery to do my son's birthday cake. The butter cream was flavorless but the cake was like eating flavorless chalk. Good service, and I thought the cupcake would be good but these were not. So disappointed.
google avatar

Phil R.

Yelp
Great cannolis. Sfogliatelle we're awesome as well. They gave us the filling spectate from the shells to keep them crisp since we were traveling with them. I'm Italian and I highly recommend.
google avatar

Mike D.

Yelp
Best cannoli in Chicagoland! We've been going to Palermo Bakery for many years and it is our "go to" place for Italian pastry and cakes.

Christina R.

Yelp
Excellent bakery! Fresh cannolis fresh Arincini Huge selection of cookies thoughts cakes and specialty Italian baked goods along with bread and pizza
google avatar

Sasha M.

Yelp
Hands down my favorite bakery! All of the cookies and pastries are amazing! The themed boxes/gifts are so cute and definitely worth the $. I got the 4/20 box and it was filled with so many goodies, I hope they bring it back next year & I'm excited to see everything else they come up with! The focaccia bread is always great, and the arancini balls are always fresh and taste great! Lemon cookies & the tri color are my favorite, but I've never had anything bad here!

Yelp
I wasn't too excited to move to Norridge because my food-loving self knew that it wasn't going to be anything like the food mecca I moved from. While I was right, there came to be a small handful of places that would bring me joy...Palermo Bakery happens to be one of them. So much so that I actually had goodies from there 3 times last week...the first 2 times I went, the third time my aunt went to save me the embarrassment! Palermo offers a delicious selection of both sweet and savory. We had their cannolis, cupcakes, cookies, hot cocoa bombs, breads, pizza, arancini, and most recently their paczkis, nutella pastries, and sandwiches...all of which were great! I like how they come up with the cutest packages and treats for different holidays...perfect for giving away as little presents. They're always coming up with something new, which is what makes me come back for more. I just wished they were open on Sundays and earlier during the week so I could go before work, but then again, probably not a good idea for my waistline!
google avatar

Stephanie C.

Yelp
It was my first time there, and I was enchanted by the sweet smell when I walked in. The people behind the counter were friendly, and even the customers were kind with their recommendations for me. Everything I picked was delicious. Can't wait to try more!

Virginia S.

Yelp
I highly recommend this bakery. Everything made fresh and a variety to choose from. Great traditional Italian pastry, bread, cookies and cakes!

Margaret A.

Yelp
Delicious cakes your choice of many different types. Different sizes make it easy to avoid waste. Cakes are beautifully decorated and fillings are fresh.

Zee J.

Yelp
$16.95 a pound for cookies is a bit pricey have seen other neighborhood bakeries price them at $10.95-$11.95 a pound

Genesis R.

Yelp
By far one of the best cakes I've ever had! Super friendly and helpful staff. Prices are great by the quality of cake and the taste was amazing.
google avatar

Erin K.

Yelp
Not only are they super amazing to their employees, and have stellar customer service: but their social media is on point too. But on to the main thing - their baked goods. I am currently eating the best chocolate chip coffee cake I have ever had. Everything I've purchased here has been stellar. Fantastic bakery!
google avatar

Joan C.

Yelp
Amazing people and the best pastries! Paninis are the best! Pizzas are delicious! Everything is worth trying!

Josie B.

Yelp
Once again, Palermo Bakery does not disappoint. Biagio & his team made my granddaughter's 1st birthday picture perfect. Our vision for a "princess dinosaur" cake was achieved to perfection. The quality, the freshness....second to none. Biagio, thank you & your team for for this flawless execution & for the outstanding customer service.

Yelp
Back when I was a kid we used to eat bread every morning. My lolo is a fan of bread and he liked any kind of bread. He used to pair it with some coffee. He used to tell me that to start your good day you need to have some hot coffee and some nice bread. It's been a long time since I visited my lolos grave. I decided to come to this place and bought some bread. I bought a pack of bread with different flavors. When I'm in the store it's too hard to choose what kinds of bread I should buy because all of their breads look delicious and yummy. After I bought it, I went to the fast food place to order coffee for takeout, then I went to the grave of my lolo. I put coffee in the graveyard and some bread. When I tasted the bread it was so delicious. I'm sure my lolo will love it too if he's alive.

Bettylu D.

Yelp
I bought pizzas, pastries and a cake for a baby shower. They were so easy to work with. Very thorough on follow up, information and pleasant. The food was delicious!!! The pizza was amazing and the custom cake was perfect as well as delicious.

Ed O.

Yelp
I may be in the minority here but I was given a pre-packaged assortment of their cookies and they were dry as all get out. I love pignoli cookies, rainbow cookies n biscotti. There was one biscotti in there n it was just a sweet, one dimensional rock. No rainbow, no pignoli. I hope their pastries and in-store cookies are better. They may wanna rethink the whole pre-packaged thing because it likely takes away from what appears to be a positive image n brand. After having a few, I seriously threw away the rest. Not worth eating
