Metro Detroit’s Best Parks for Picnics | Eater Detroit

"A city favorite for more than 100 years, Palmer Park is spread out over 281 acres of meadows, athletic fields, native woodlands, and recreational areas on the city’s northwest side. After a picnic, enjoy the playground, biking trails, or tennis courts. You’re likely to spot a wild animal or two here while listening to the warbling of the throngs of songbirds. What to eat: Pink Flamingo To-Go, which is temporarily delivery-only, whips up grab-and-go salads, rice balls, veggie curry, and flavorful lemonades. The beloved Dutch Girl Donuts has been met with long lines of satisfied customers since 1947. Next door, Cynt-Sensational Popcorn will bring its famous array of seasoned popcorn to a storefront this season." - Monica Williams

Google
This park is SO GREAT! We had lunch at a nice covered log table/chairs, played by the splash pad, spent time at the playground, and walked to the start of a few trails. This looks like a great find for the summer and beyond. The park and water areas were not crowded when we arrived. The murals on the community building and the DIA Art displayed around the trails are beautiful. I look forward to exploring this park more next time.

Palmer Park is coming back. The Michigan State Fair Bandshell has taken residence up on the north side, accessible to West Seven Mile Road, next to police station. It should be a new venue for outside con arts for seasons to come. Glad it was saved

Beautiful park with a splash pad, full disc golf course, two playgrounds, walking/hiking/biking paths, & a mini disc golf course to teach kids! Certainly worth a visit for any family in the area. Holds festivals/fairs regularly.

A very nice walking path with tall trees shading you! You can see the police horses on the path also. There’s a very nice playground as well !

I attended the Palmer Park Art Fair last weekend. It was really nice. This pic is from Posh and Stone. She makes handcrafted gemstone jewelry. It's very unique and reasonably priced.

Lovely, extensive, well kept, multi-purpose park with an iconic community house, MoGo bikes, children’s playground, log cabin and apple tree field. Perfect for a bike ride, a health fair, art fair or just a walk or a 5K run in the park.

There is too much to be said about this park. It's got deer, ducks and ton of activities. I'm about to go skating here now. My mobile laser tag group participated in Scarefest with the City Of Detroit and Total Access Events. It was a great time.

Yelp
Very lucky to have turned up to the park on Log Cabin Day, hosted by the People for Palmer Park. Why, you ask? Because free ice cream. Shout out to Guernsey Farms Dairy for their delicious offerings. Further into the park it feels like an urban forest, trees as far as the eye can see... until Woodward Avenue, that is.

Yelp
My favorite local park to explore with my camera. Great trails for walking or biking.

Yelp
Good park, has a decent disc golf course. It's flat and open but a decent size for Detroit. Dog friendly on a leash.

Yelp
I drive by Palmer Park every darn day, just about. How often this urban oasis in northern Detroit beckons as soon as the explosive burst of emerald and jade leaves wash over its lush landscape. Come and take a look if you haven't visited in recent years. The recent explosion of development in the adjacent Palmer Park towers and neighbourhood reflect on the changing infrastructure in the park. Fresh paths and new benches beckon to walkers. Regular landscaping efforts keep the weeds and trees in check, and the warbling of songbirds join the less lovely honks of resident Canada geese and mallards for a touch of the natural world in an urban ecosystem. Palmer Park boasts far more than a few fields; there are tennis courts, a golf course, and the nearby detachment of the 12th Precinct, Detroit Police, keeping matters safe. It's also a history lesson with a gorgeous cabin, the summer home of the same Mr. Palmer responsible for the 1894 Columbia Exhibition in Chicago that put the Windy City on the map. Other charming elements await discovery, from a pretty stone building at the corner of Woodward and 6 Mile I still haven't figured out the purpose of (washrooms?) to modern sculptures. It's easy to forget just how large Palmer Park really is. Wander around the edges after parking your car and you'll learn there are ample spots to have a pick up game of soccer or let the kids run around. All in all, it's a handsome oasis for the nearby residents and the improving security situation make it more of a destination. The hard work of local groups to support art fairs and local festivals there has further reinforced its continued role as a green space.

Yelp
THERE IS A SPLASH PAD! I just discovered this when I was dropping off some books to the Little Library, and it simply made my day. Very nice lush green park. Happy to have it in the community.

Yelp
Beautiful park - really happy I found it. I'm pregnant and going to bring my infant here for picnics I love it so much! It's huge and beautiful, interesting for an otherwise rough area.

Yelp
As a recent transplant to Detroit, we stumbled across Palmer Park quite by accident but love it! We live fairly close by so are able to enjoy dog walking & cycling through the woods - there are maintained off road trails as well as footpaths. There is a new splash pad for the children and the City is currently building a new play scape! We are so excited about it and can't wait for it to be completed! People For Palmer Park (a non-profit) is working with Detroit and the community to revitalize the park and proved a ton of activities. There is story time, yoga (for adults and kids), tai chi, weekly bike rides, baseball and tennis. There is even a Log Cabin day, harvest festival and winter fest! I'd highly recommend checking out the park - you don't know what you are missing! On the downside, a few visitors seem incapable of clearing up after themselves but trash is minimal and the City and regular walkers pick up litter on their walks. With a little more love, this park will be a real gem!

Yelp
I rode through Palmer Park on the way to the Detroit Golf Club -- even stopped and parked for a bit and my word, it is in need of a great makeover. At first, I wasn't sure if I was seeing correctly. But yes, what I was seeing was Palmer Park, in the midst of the upper crust, Palmer Woods area, en route to the prestigious and historical Detroit Golf Club. They need a landscaper, STAT -- especially for that Palmer Park Golf Course and they need some kind of beautification team to go in and go hard on making it a better looking place.

Yelp
Recently moved only to discover I lived near this great park. Splash Pad for the kids, walking trails, tennis, the historic log cabin and pond. This is a great place to have a picnic or BBQ. Having no kids at home anymore, I take the dogs for walks in the trails. Sometimes it's hard to believe we are 7 miles from downtown. Its the country in the city. There is something like 300+ acres that make up this place. Come out and enjoy! The People For Palmer Park is an organization that helps look after and maintain the park in partnership with the city. They host regular events in the park. Check out their Facebook page for updates:)

Yelp
Palmer Park has been a magical place for me since childhood, and I love it just as much now as before - historic woods, an 19th century log cabin, the Detroit Mounted Police horse stables, Lake Frances, and more. I am part of the People for Palmer Park, a community group made up of people who love the park and are working to revitalize it. Last summer we had outdoor yoga in the park drawing some 50 people some weeks, we have weekly bike rides through the trails and surrounding neighborhoods, and this summer we are going to have FREE tai chi classes! We participated in Michigan Log Cabin Day with about 800 visitors to the park and log cabin, and will make this an annual event. Be sure to go to find People for Palmer Park on Facebook. We are having our second annual WinterFest Sat Feb 23 so please come out and enjoy this beautiful setting. This is truly a special and lovely historic park.

Yelp
Safe and fun. Lots of trails to walk run or bike. I love the trees here feels like I am up north. The lake trail is short but pretty. There are kid play areas and a splash park in summer. This is a peaceful park full of joy and fun. I also love all the events people for Palmer park host.

Yelp
Cherice is right. Palmer Park indeed had a reputation of being a destination for gay men. So families were turned off by the idea of visiting. I figured a park is a park and all people are every where. Not that Palmer Park would be my first choice any way but hey I was in the area and decided to ride through and take a quick swing. Yes, on a swing set. The park is as I remember from childhood. My Mom worked afternoons so me, my Dad and my sister spent a lot of afternoons here. The park was clean, the greenery was bright and the swings were waiting for me. There were quite a few people on the bike and jogging trails. Some couples were getting there romance on while walking and holding hands. I'm glad I read Cherice's review and decided to stop by. Getting my swing on made me feel young at heart and I burned some calories in the process.

Yelp
The price is right here ($20 w a cart for 9 holes). I think there are even better twilight rates, as well. The course is in okay condition. The fairways are wide and the grass is long. Not too much that will get you in trouble here. The greens are slow with not much break, but they are well maintained. Overall worth it.

Yelp
Reputations are sometimes difficult to break; however, I would ask everyone to stop by the park today. Since 2010, a small and growing grassroots effort has evolved into People for Palmer Park (www.peopleforpalmerpark.org/) working to restore the park. You can also follow our efforts on Facebook. Today, there are cleared trails (walking, running, biking and hiking), free yoga this summer and much more. Clearing of trash and planting of orchard trees. Not to mention a new safe & secure committtee! Stop by the site or the park itself! Come join us Saturday, April 21st for our "Earth Day" clean up including helping the Detroti Mounted Police now stationed @ the park.

Yelp
This park has really transformed and became a place to explore and enjoy the beauty around us. The trails are great to ride bikes on or just to walk. There is a splash park that is clean and has bathrooms. There is a park adjacent from there that has swings and a huge play scape that is lots of fun for little ones. The historic Log Cabin has really been fixed up and the People For Palmer Park(PFPP) are working to replace the stained glass windows. There was just recently a gorgeous June wedding in front and inside of the log cabin. The PFPP organize fun events such as the Winterfest, dog show, art fair, fun fundraisers, Log Cabin Day, and many more exciting and fun events. It is a great place to picnic and have a barbecue or family reunion.

Yelp
For most of my life Palmer Park had a bad rap to it. It was known as the the "gay" park, and many people didn't go there unless they were homosexual. All others stayed away. And it wasn't just a myth...it was because around that neighborhood there were many business that catered to homosexual men. So Palmer Park was common meeting ground. Lately, however, I rarely hear Palmer Park spoken of negatively. You will still notice a lot of gay men, but it is also host a great golf course. During the summer you will definitely see the park populated with those that want to go for a morning jog or a lunch recess. It's a decent sized park too, so it may be also good for group outings, such as a family reunion.

Yelp
We took the People for Palmer Park Architecture Tour on Saturday 10/6/2012. The walking tour was amazing! We had the opportunity to hear about the history of several buildings in the district. We were given an opportunity to walk through three residents. As an added bonus, we got a chance to see inside the Palmer Log Cabin! It is a pleasure to see that a real revitalization is taking place in this historic section of the city. I have not visited Palmer Park in many years and had completely forgotten the grandeur of the buildings in the neighborhood. I applaud the work of People for Palmer Park, the investors that are taking a chance on Detroit, and the residents of the Palmer Park community.

Yelp
Wow, too bad to see the covert homophobia here. I used to live in Palmer Park in 1980-1982. A neighborhood that used to be Jewish, now became a gay neighborhood. the beautiful old synagogue..The apartments were spacious and gorgeous. The mostly gay male population kept up the property well. It was the only place in Detroit where gays could live safely. More numbers, more safety. If people, then, considered this negative, this is there loss. There were great restaurants on Woodward Ave. Of course, on 6 Mile Rd., there were many gay clubs. The Park often had festivals (for all people) during the summer.
