Palmys Breezes Into Pacific Beach With Brunch and Laid-Back Vibes | Eater San Diego

"Landing just blocks from the beach, I discovered a lovingly restored craftsman bungalow at Cass and Felspar that now houses a cafe, espresso bar, and market with a feel-good menu ranging from breakfast bowls, toasts, and smoothies (served all day) to healthy wraps and salads. An extension of Blueys Cafe & Market, run by Sabrina and Dave Harper, the space is intended to be a personal, community gathering spot with a surrounding garden for refueling and relaxing after a beach session; the owners plan swim and surfing clubs and partner Danny Way will host weekly skate meet-ups. The extensive espresso menu includes the Aussie flat white and will feature Amigo Roasters (whose beans are farm-roasted in El Salvador and who work on making the coffee supply chain more equitable and sustainable). Palmys will start operating 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. with plans to extend hours, add a dinner menu including sourdough pizzas, and occasionally offer alcohol for weekend brunches and special film and music events; the re-done outdoor patio is a highlighted part of the project." - Candice Woo

Google
A lovely spot in Pacific Beach for relaxing, hanging out, and/or working! The vibes here are literally immaculate! It feels like hanging out in a friend's super cute beachside home, with some cozy seating where the living room would be, and an ordering counter for the kitchen. There was also plenty of seating throughout the outdoor patio, which wraps around its corner lot and gives everyone plenty of room to spread out and find cozy, semi-private spaces for themselves. There's some lovely light bites, pastries, and other treats you could order, although we just got some coffee drinks when visiting. For myself - the Matcha Latte with a bit of honey, which was prepared absolutely perfectly! So foamy, soft, and soothing to sip in a nice big green mug! This is legitimately one of the best Matcha Lattes I've ever ordered from a cafe! The barista lady was also very friendly and took so much care and attention into preparing each drink. The coffee drinks were a bit pricey, and I ended up paying $11 after leaving a tip...but honestly the quality of the drink and the vibes of the environment made up for that price tag. I loved Palmy's and would definitely come back - I highly recommend stopping by when you're in the Pacific Beach area!

Google
Food was ok, not out of this world but good enough, came out fast and warm. Brunette cashier barista was nice and helpful with menu suggestions. The restaurant had a cool beachy decor and its inside a craftsman style home. Plenty of seating outside and some seating inside. Parking a little tough, 2hr limit and cannot park in those spots between 8-10a on Thursdays so that would not be the day to come here if you're intending to drive/park.

Google
This place was solid, but I only got an espresso shot (for context) as I was trying to find a cute little place to work; however, they didn’t have any outlets in the outside area (or none that I could see). That said, I still would check this place out because the food did look good. The espresso wasn’t bad either! Customer service was timely and the overall atmosphere was relaxed, calm, and chill, but it looks like it can get pretty busy as well

Google
Waited 20 minutes for my soggy shrimp salad. Another 30 after that for my friends cold burrito she had to ask for them to microwave again (it never got warm). Another 20 after that for my friends sandwich. We all ordered at the same time. Our other friend ordered an acai bowl and there was deadass mold in her fruit y’all can’t be serious. Food is so mid and unbalanced, taste is nothing special at all you’re better off going anywhere down the street. I personally don’t like mold in my food but if you do then this is the place for you!!

Google
The breakfast burrito here is unreal, definitely exceeded my expectations! It was a generous portion and well worth the price. The breakfast sandwich was decent, but if you’re deciding between the two, go with the burrito. The coffee was just okay, not a super bold flavor I prefer my coffee to have but does the job. Overall coming here with friends is a vibe and the service are all very sweet and kind.

Google
This place has not bad food, but you're mostly here for the vibes! The breakfast burrito was good and worth getting, but the French toast bites were a little too overly fried for my taste. Their smoothies were really good, but a quick callout to anyone with allergies/intolerances—I asked for mine without the coconut topping, and as you can see in the photo, I had less smoothie than my partner. As I drank it became apparent that this was because they had added the topping, realized that was a mistake, and then scooped it off, but had left a few pieces of coconut behind in the process. Totally fine for me, I'm not allergic, but just wanted to call it out for others! Overall, it's a very cute place to meet friends or sit and work outside while enjoying an average brunch, but it's definitely busy on the weekends.

Google
I love Palmys! Their food is amazing-- shoutout to the Breakfast Burrito. Truly unbeatable. The atmosphere is also extremely relaxing and great for remote work. As long as you bring your own portable charger, you can spend a few hours cranking through work! This post was made in connection with a Toast promotion

Yelp
My husband I road our bicycles to coffee shop around the corner to grab some fresh pastries. Unfortunately, they were all out, so we stumbled upon this adorable cafe instead! it's an adorable Bohemian style from the outside, with its woven light fixtures and mix of greenery. the inside is an adorable aesthetic, too, with a more small beach/surf vibe. They have a fair variety of breakfast favorites, in addition some acai bowls and a long list of smoothies. My boyfriend ordered the bagel and lox, and I ordered the Blue Horizon acai Bowl, that actually does not have I say and just has a blue sorbet base. He also ordered the charcoal, peanut butter smoothie. We both ordered some tater tots on the side as well. I came to this place with no expectations, and was very very impressed by the food. My boyfriend smoothie was very delicious, not too heavy on the peanut butter, and accompanied by a few fresh banana dry chips. My acai bowl was perfect for anyone who doesnt actually like acai itself, it was accompanied with a with a variety of tasty berries. It was super refreshing, filling, and light for a hot summer day. And I cannot not comment about the tots, because they amazing! If you like double fried French fries, you will LOVE the Tatter Tots! I've never had tots so crispy and I was kind of surprised because there menu seems to be very "healthy" (and there definitely is a ton of healthy options) so I didn't expect such crispy tots, great suprise! I saw a lot of people working on their laptops while chilling here, so great place to get some studying or work done as well. I will definitely be back!

Yelp
A beautiful spot near the water, breakfast was delicious and the smoothie the blue moon was a dream. I love how you order at the front and the service was great, so friendly! I got a card, honey, and California gummy bears as well in the front of the little store.

Yelp
We love Palmys! As a family with a small toddler this place was perfect for us to grab a bite before heading to Sea World from our Airbnb in the area. Service was super sweet with our toddler and really accommodating. Our Cortados were 10/10 and the Açaí Bowl we split was super fresh and filling! The vibe is SO cute, they have many high chairs if needed and super walkable from many places in PB. We'll be back!

Yelp
Thanks to the Chef Marcus for his Ubi take with my wife's Chicken and Ini waffles. Thanks for your time and chatting with us. We can't wait to come and taste more flavors you have instore. We'll come see you at the Dock as well.

Yelp
Such a cute beach themed cafe in PB! Shared my meal with a girlfriend and it made for the perfect pre-flight meal before heading back to Phx. The tots were crispy, the bread was super fresh, and the roasted peppers added the perfect flavor. I ordered a sugar free vanilla latte, and the flavoring was good but the milk was a little bit scorched. Such a cool spot though, i will be back next time I'm visiting PB!

Yelp
While looking for brunch places in PB, this one kept popping up so I had to check it out. The food was good, but not worth the wait. We waited in line for 40 minutes to order and then another 40 min to get our food. They seem very understaffed given the volume of customers, so a lot of tables aren't cleared or wiped so you're awkwardly left at a table waiting. The blue moon smoothie was really good, but I wouldn't come back and wait for anything here.

Yelp
Visiting a friend and she wanted to go here as it's one of her fav brunch places. It has the cutest style and reminded me of being in Hawaii. You order at the cash register, I got the prosciutto croissant sandwich which came with tater tots on the side. It ended up being $20 which was a little expensive, but the portion was relatively big for me. We had difficulty finding seats as it was packed and a lot of people were wandering around trying to find somewhere to sit. We ended up asking to sit with a random couple as we had nowhere to go. Obviously they're more popular than they have space for and this was 11:30am on a Friday so I was shocked! It was a bummer they didn't have enough seating and I imagine it may be difficult on the weekends. However the food is great. My sandwich had a ridiculous amount of egg in it but not much prosciutto at all. I do wish the proportions were more even as it was so Heavy on the eggs and maybe one slice of prosciutto and a dash of arugula. Especially since it's advertised as a prosciutto croissant, I felt like it needed more of the meat and veggies than it did egg. However, it was really yummy and the tater tots were really well seasoned. I tried my friend's smoothie and thought it was exceptional and so flavorful. The ambience of the place is absolutely adorable. I just truly wish they had more seating as it seems to be very busy and it's a bummer since you have to wait to get a table until after you order but it was a good experience and very cute!

Yelp
Everything was just ok, but for the price point, it's a pass for me. $30 for a mediocre sandwich and a less-than-average coffee. The salted maple latte was really just ok, nothing special. Overly milky and the flavor of the espresso was lost in the milk and sweetener. The palmy sando was really dry. Nothing special about it. I would have appreciated a housemade aioli maybe to improve the flavor. The tots were too crunchy and hard for me (does that make sense??). Maybe it's just me but I wouldn't come back. The açaí bowls do look good though!
google avatar

Tara M.

Yelp
Quick service and friendly staff. Vibe was easy going. Plenty of seating. Very cute outside. The Mexican mocha latte was good. Salted maple latte and cookie butter latte were yummy. Not very sweet. Not too far from the beach. We did not get food but the pastries looked delicious.

Yelp
Palmys is a unique place, selling food out of a seemingly a refurbished home. Ambiance is a 10/10. Shrubbery blocks the street creating a calming beach environment. All the food and drink I've had has been tasty and sourced from quality ingredients. The only issue is the items are a bit pricey for the portion size.
google avatar

Yelp
I had such a great experience here the food is great! Wonderful atmosphere and layout I come here to work sometimes too and it's just great! Wonderful service too :)

Yelp
Stopped by this morning around 9:30 by 10 am the place was so packed I'm happy I got there early otherwise the line gets pretty long. I had the little Gordo sandwich and a drip coffee, the sandwich was a little greasy but tasty the coffee was really good. Lots of outdoor seating the indoor seating is very limited, lots of street parking.
google avatar

Bridget S.

Yelp
Great breakfast burrito. Latte had too much milk as is too often the case. Nice view, seating, and service.
google avatar

Jo C.

Yelp
It's a cute spot for brunch/coffee, lots of seating options indoor or outdoor. I love the ambience here surrounded by plants throughout the restaurant. As for the food unfortunately it was mediocre and slightly expensive for what you get. I ordered the steak sandwich and the steak was hard to chew. Turns out they had sliced the beef with the grain rather than against it. To me that would be a rookie mistake from the chef/cook. My brioche bun was also soggy on the bottom. Perhaps if they had vegetable or even lettuce to balance the sandwich it would have been a bit better. The tater tots taste like store bought frozen food which was nothing special. I'll probably come back for a coffee but not for the food.
google avatar

Regine A.

Yelp
So happy I finally got to check this place out. It's a house turned into a cafe/restaurant. Plenty of seating outside surrounded by plants. Staff are super sweet. I loved the prosciutto toast. It hit so many flavor notes; salty, sweet, savory but all balanced well. My favorite part was the burrata. To drink, I ordered a hot horchata latte. I'd definitely get it again! Knocked off one star because my friends steak sandwich took about 20+ minutes to arrive. Other than that - everything was great. I'll be back for sure

Yelp
i so badly wanted to like this place. Our first choice was Kono's but line was wrapped around the building. I was looking for alternatives and found Palmy's. It's like San Diego's Urth cafe but I wouldn't disrespect Urth like that. Unlike Kono's whose food is good and healthy portions this is the complete opposite. Food took forever (it's Sunday I get it's gets busy) and came out room temperature felt like it was waiting in the window too long under no heat. Steak and eggs was $24 for maybe 2 oz of steak and the steak tasted flavorless and tasted like rehydrated jerky. Tater tots are advertised as "old bay tots," but literally couldn't taste any of the flavors listed. We got coffee but it was too milky (made w whole milk maybe that's why) but i suggest coming up w a standard recipe so the flavor is still noticeable and strong. Honestly if you come here just get the sweet menu, açaí bowls, maybe the salads but stay away from the savory. Definitely not worth the wait and food quality was very poor. Besides that obviously such a nice place but if you are eating here w a group i suggest one person grabs a table before ordering, seating is first come first serve.
google avatar

Cay P.

Yelp
Cute but crowded and small. Came here after a sculpt class and cold plunge at fitness collective and walked over. Got the hot matcha latte to-go and it was okay. I'd come again to try a sit down experience for the food.
google avatar

Ashley R.

Yelp
Food, service, vibes- all amazing. They do get extremely busy on the weekends so plan to wait 20-30 minutes just to order (it's worth it though).
google avatar

Del W.

Yelp
Burrito was SO GOOD and the fruit was great too! Staff are friendly -- had to wait about 20 minutes to order, but food was out to our table at a reasonable time
google avatar

Ashley M.

Yelp
always a staple when in san diego (yes, the line is worth it!) the breakfast burrito is AMAZING & outdoor seating is perfect.
google avatar

Linda S.

Yelp
Food looks good but takes a long time to come out. I can hear with my two gals and we wanted a "quick" breakfast before we hit the road. Our food took an hour to come out. I do not recommend. Although their coffee is delightful nothing can make up for my hangryness. I'm sad now.
google avatar

Erin D.

Yelp
From the start, the experience was disappointing. No greeting when we walked up to the counter to order--just awkward silence. The building and vibe are cute, but ordering at the counter is inconvenient. How am I supposed to grab a seat and place an order at the same time? We opted for takeout instead, hoping to find a seat afterward. Then came the wait. Three people who ordered coffee after us were served first--okay, cool. When our food finally arrived, I went to grab utensils and found only one plastic fork in the basket. I asked for another and some ketchup. The response? "Ketchup is behind you." Sure, but it's a bottle--am I supposed to drown my meal in it? As for the cutlery, I was told, "Oh, I'd have to go and get that." ...Yeah? No kidding? The basket was empty. It's literally your job to restock it or grab one when a customer asks. Overall, bad service, frustrating setup, and not worth the hassle. Now, the food. We ordered the sandwich and the Cali burrito--talk about disappointment. I was so excited for the tater tots on the side of my sandwich. They looked beautifully crispy, but somehow they had this rank smoky meat flavor? No idea what went wrong there. The sandwich itself was... fine. The egg and bacon were cooked well, but it completely lacked flavor. There was some kind of aioli--I could see it, but I definitely couldn't taste it. Overall, just boring. Now, the burrito. What the hell were they trying to do here? The steak was disgusting--hard, gristly, dry chunks of meat that made every bite a chore. No sauce? No cheese? Just a sad, flavorless mess. We each took one bite and threw it away.

Yelp
Palmys is a hidden treasure! Located off the main, busy roads this little hideaway is tucked back in a quiet street with peaceful settings. Everything about the atmosphere is peaceful with outdoor and bohemian vibes a plenty. I do feel like the costs is a little on the higher end but I've never been disappointed!
google avatar

Bridget B.

Yelp
The food here was just okay. The plant based chorizo had no flavor compared to the eggs, and the onions were a bit overpowering. The snickerdoodle latte was a bit watery and lacking in espresso flavor. Probably would not return but definitely had a cute ambiance
google avatar

Rita W.

Yelp
Food and coffee were fantastic! A bit of a wait, but worth it. Sitting on the wrap-around-porch was reminiscent of east coast, but surrounded by charming tropical foliage and trees. Friendly staff. Crowd was mostly 20 something's.
google avatar

Isabella A.

Yelp
We came two hours before close so there were not a lot of people so it was super easy to order and find a seat. We ordered two smoothies and the lox bagel (pictured). We let the girls know about our nut allergy and they were super kind about taking an extra effort! The lox bagel was the perfect size and tasted great! Overall, lots of seating and great location for meeting friends!
google avatar

Yelp
I love this place! My son who lives in Phoenix, Arizona is a great resource to anything good in San Diego! Bahahahha! This place is so cool! Located right at the heart of Pacific Beach, It was worth the 40 minute drive from where we live. The coffee they have is so good. I love the lavender one. The food is so filling but not heavy to the gastro! Service? Top notch! I hope you get out of your comfort zone and try this place! You won't be disappointed. I wasn't. I went back bringing my children for more the next day!!
google avatar

Hannah K.

Yelp
Palmys is very cute and more spacious than expected. However our food took super long to come out and when it did, it was cold so we were a bit disappointed. Also the utensils were not cleaned properly.
google avatar

Alex E.

Yelp
Got a cali burrito it was really greasy, still tasty but just kinda overly messy and wayyyy too greasy. i wish there was a better salsa on the side like a salsa verde or something.
google avatar

Kelsey J.

Yelp
Palmy's is an adorable little breakfast spot. The patio area is pretty large however not a ton of tables, especially shaded ones. I tried the Blue Moon smoothie - literally 100/10. Best smoothie I've ever had I think. Also tried the breakfast burrito - also really good! I enjoyed the green salsa it came with. I didn't get coffee but my friends did. I will say it tasted watered down. It almost seems like they use coffee instead of espresso for their lattes. Service was average, our food took a little longer than expected to come out!
google avatar

Gabriella P.

Yelp
Prepare for the most mixed review you have EVER read. Okay so the breakfast sandwhich we got was delicious. The carne asada burrito was putrid. The girl at the counter was rude. The servers passing by were absolute angels. The ambiance is sooo beautiful because of the trees and ocean breeze. HOWEVER, the possum I saw sent chills down my spine and I could barely sit there because I felt like it was watching me lol.
google avatar

Varsha T.

Yelp
palmys is an absolutely adorable little café spot i visited while i was in san diego. i thoroughly enjoyed the acai bowl i got there--it's one of my favorite sweet treats. the bowl felt incredibly fresh and real, with every ingredient clearly thought out, making it one of the standout meals of my trip. the interior of the cafe is super trendy with cute decor, and there are both indoor and outdoor seating options--perfect for enjoying san diego's great weather. i noticed a lot of people studying and chatting with friends, which added to the cozy vibe. my food came out in about 20 minutes, and i was pleasantly surprised to find a small boutique area inside selling cute local items. overall, the ambience is super cute, and i'd definitely come back to this place next time i'm in the area.

Kay D.

Yelp
Went there two days in a row and everything was so delicious! I loved the specialty coffees, the portion sizes on the food were great as well. The outdoor area is beautiful and they had a DJ playing the second day we were there, it was a really nice vibe to sit outside in the sunshine and listen.
google avatar

Brenda D.

Yelp
Love coming to this place alone or with friends, when I'm hungry or just want a healthy snack, or just a regular coffee. It simply is one of the best coffee shops in San Diego!

Oliva V.

Yelp
blonde girl that was cashier up front was rude. she had attitude for no reason, speaks on top of other employees, & gave me a nasty looks as soon as i walked in. i came with positive happy energy and walked out upset.. please train her better

Yelp
First time visit here and the overall experience was good. I ordered their Heirloom Tomato Salad and I thought it was good but a bit pricey. Service was good. I came during a busy part of the day so they seemed a bit overwhelmed but I know they were trying their best. There's very limited seating available - especially during peak hours. And tables are first-come, first serve therefore, you'll have to snatch a table as soon as one becomes available. We got lucky and found a table but there were still dirty plates on them. It took a while for staff to come by and clean the table.

Sonny S.

Yelp
Went in the morning and not super busy! Breakfast burrito is fire. Americano, delicious. Great vibes and love the outdoor seating
google avatar

Yelp
Love the ambience and corner plot location. Lots of street parking and good outside and inside seating. The ambiance is great :) U have to go inside to order at the counter and while u are waiting, the scent of fresh coffee brewing makes u change all your drink orders to lean towards the coffee menu :) the servers are friendly and helped answer all the questions i had. In $90 (before tip), we got: - peppermint mocha latte hot 5/5- delicious twist on a regular latte and gives a cozy feeling - cappuccino with hazelnut 3.5/5- decent but nothing special - lifesaver smoothie 2/5- water slushie with little juice and took 20 mins to come out - breakfast sando 4/5- fried egg on rustic bread smeared with avacado/ cheese - breakfast burrito - 5/5- loved it with chorizo - cali burrito - 5/5- loved it - chocolate croissant - 5/5 crunchy, soft , gooey oh so yum! Definitely coming back for the food ! #supportlocal -

Britney H.

Yelp
Good amount of seating and cute location! Customer service is pretty bad and feels like it is ran by 15 year olds, and food takes genuinely 25+ every time you order, without fail. So if you're in it for the long haul this is perfect for you! Coffee is eh, but the location will keep you coming back regardless of the waste of time! Very curated and cute
google avatar

Kelsi K.

Yelp
The açaí bowl was so delicious! Super cute place with great coffee and tons of juice options.
google avatar

Taylor K.

Yelp
Oh. This is the spot. Fave breakfast burrito I've ever had!! WOW! Crunchy hashbrowns and subtle yet flavorful caramelized onions! Every bite is more and more delicious. Unreal. Dank berry smoothie and coffee as well! Definitely on the more expensive side but worth every penny. So much seating outside with cute tables and chairs. Great place to meet w friends or get work done. And so close to the beach!
google avatar

Julia H.

Yelp
An adorable house turned cafe with lots of outdoor seating space and a variety of brunch options offered on the menu. We went on a Sunday morning and the food was a little slow to arrive. The drinks were mid - the iced matcha was a dull green color and didn't have a strong matcha flavor. The iced coffee was also not very strong and tasted a bit watered down. Prosciutto toast: (5/5) a nice balance of savory and sweet and all the ingredients paired well together. My only complaint is that it wasn't enough food for the price Andy's Lox Bagel: (4/5) was nothing special when it came to the bagel, cream cheese or lox itself. It was slightly elevated with the addition of the tomatoes, pickled onions and cucumbers, and capers. Overall a solid bagel that was still nice and filling!
google avatar

Melissa S.

Yelp
such a cute spot. I tried their seasonal snickerdoodle latte- so good! I had it iced with oatmilk. I also tried one of the avocado toast. It was good, regular avo toast. The space itself is spacious and super vibey. Great to come get some work done, meet up with friends or just sit and have some coffee.
google avatar

Joelle C.

Yelp
Stopped by to work for a few hours with some friends and we got in when it was super busy but were able to grab a table inside. Food was solid but the burrito needed some extra salt and would've appreciated some extra salsa. The breakfast sandwich was great. Ambiance is super indie surfer vibes and they have free WiFi which is great. No outlets though so be warned. Would come again!
google avatar

Anna V.

Yelp
Lots of food and drink options with fast service. Their food always tastes good and I love their iced matchas or smoothies. They have plenty of outdoor seating and will deliver the food to you. If you prefer taking your food a short walk to the beach they have a pickup counter and a very cute inside merch set up.

Laura G.

Yelp
I absolutely love coming to Palmys! I come here to work, I come here to hang out with my friends, and for any occasion, it is the best location! It's absolutely adorable, it reminds me of sitting on my grandma's patio! The food is super great, especially the Andy's lox bagel! Definitely try it! Coffee is also great!
google avatar

Yelp
I love Palmys and am a regular customer. Overall I have nothing but great things to say, food is good, staff is great, ambiance is the best of any cafe in PB. However it seems like their prices have gotten really over the top. Today, I ordered a normal cappuccino and it was over $7. With food (a super standard egg breakfast), I spent ~ $35 and that was just for one person. Another other time recently, a matcha with almond milk was $11. I'm such a fan of this place, but the prices are starting to steer me away

Yelp
10/10. The food was just want I wanted!! The mocha latte was the best coffee I've had in a while. I got the lil sando and my boyfriend got the breakfast sandwich and we split the chocolate croissant. It was so quick and the staff is so friendly! I love sitting on the patio here and relaxing under the sun. Favorite Sunday breakfast spot!
