The Essential Montreal Croissants | Eater Montreal

"Le Paltoquet devotees are always happy to sing the praises of its somewhat smaller, but nonetheless butter-rich classic croissants. The compact Van Horne shop, invariably crowded on weekends, has its charms as well." - Heather Vandenengel

I visited Le Paltoquet this afternoon. The few pastries that were still available were delicious! The pear tart is soft in the middle and the crust has the right firmness. The baguettes were sold out by mid afternoon. This bakery is just that good 👍

Best pastries and croissants! Paltoquet a small place in the suburbs of Quebec that came highly recommended from a local and was worth the visit. Loved the flaky goat cheese and tomato puff. Coffee was great. Luckily we got in 10 minutes before the place got full. It was a wet rainy morning and warm croissants and coffee tasted heavenly.

Ever since they sold few years ago to the new owner, the quality has never been the same. They stopped making many items and lots of items are out of stock early on in the day. Quality is the biggest problem the patisserie are not made as well as before. Before it was the best patisserie in Montréal, now i wouldn't recommend it. They won the 2nd best croissant in Montréal many years ago, but today its not even top 20 in the city.

The most delicious croissants in Montreal! Just like real French croissants – always fresh, with magical, flaky dough that melts in your mouth.

Google
Cozy coffee shop and patisserie. Their almond croissants and regular croissants-AMAZING. The size of these croissants quite small, so you can easily finish 2-3 pieces at a time. For cake, “Royale” is my favorite and they have BÛCHES for Noel as well. During Covid time, I often call and pre-order so less headache for Sold out items that you want.

Had the cappuccino and the chocolate croissant and it was next level The place is an authentic French patisserie with a very cozy atmosphere. Even if it's small it gives you big flavours and big service. I rarely give the full 5 star but this one made it!

Google
THE best croissants and chocolatines in Montreal, without question. None of the enormous monstrosities you see elsewhere. My go to for all kinds of cakes, too.

Yelp
This real deal patisserie is worth the trek across town, and makes their delectable baked goods from scratch; by hand - daily. The decor is nothing to rave about, but their tartelettes and entremets (rectangle shaped pastries) make that point mute. You can really tell the difference between their offerings and bulk made or industrially made treats with their attention to quality and detail. It seems by the line-up in front of the display case, this may not be a secret - at least to locals who seem to know where to pair up hot beverages with sweets in a cozy ambiance (even if a little dated). They also have some dry imported treats on wall shelves across from the pastry case, and several chalk boards listing the coffees and various other menu items. The service is also quite prompt, welcoming and friendly. It may seem obvious, but come early to get the best selection, or risk missing out.

Yelp
So Sundays are my days off training at the gym. One Sunday I didn't have raw materials to make brekkie. paltoquet opens at 9 so I decided to walk up there. For context I live near the tam tam mountains closer to Ave Mont Royal. My walk up Cote ste Catherine to Paltoquet took me 30 mins or so. I was told about their croissant " français de France" so I ordered 2 and coffee......lemme tell ya, les French were right, their croissants are WAY better than what we get in Montreal. So after consuming my Breakfast, off I go back home walking. All in all it was a good hour of walking with an excellent meal as my pit stop! Thank you for attending my Ted talk on planning your trips!

Yelp
Way overrated and really bad overall service!!! (some of the staff and especially the owner need to re-evaluate their customer service) I'm not sure why some of these older positive reviews... things surely have changed since. It's considered a more typical French pâtisserie, but they would never make it in Paris. Their pastries are way too sweet... just packed with sugar and low on flavor. Just in Outremont, there's many better pastry shops and cafés than this place. (exemple: Mamie Clafoutis, just 200m to the East on Van Horne... way way better!)

Yelp
Hands down, one of the best bakeries in the city. Go in the morning for their fresh warm croissant, buy one of their cakes and then die and go to heaven, or pick up a jam cookie. All fresh, always super delicious and full of flavour.

Yelp
The croissant is one of the best in Montreal...crispy, buttery and moist. Love this place and it is a neighbourhood favorite

Yelp
One of this little bakery you would walk by without really noticing. Nothing fancy to catch your eyes. But let's admit something here I'm from France and if there's something I miss way too much, it would be the croissants. I know in Montreal you can find some good ones, and this place is one of them. A real one ! With butter ! Salted butter ! And damn, that was good. The almond croissant was pretty good too, doesn't look like an amazing pastry covered with almonds, it doesn't look great but it tastes great. It's like this place.

Yelp
Paltoquet is a pretty awesome little cafe / patisserie. The only trick is getting a table. The croissants were apparently voted some of the best in Montreal, and I believe it. They are incredible. The breakfast/brunch is pretty spectacular - simple flavours but just very well done. I particularly love the oeufs paltoquet, which are a lovely combination of eggs, ham, and cheese that is delish, but all the combinations are delish. For a very simple snack, try the "croissant avec confiture" (croissant with jam). Yum. The desserts and cakes are also pretty awesome. The pista-choc is to DIE FOR. If you plan to go with kids be aware that there is NO room inside for a stroller, and the only high chair they have is really only good for kids old enough to not need a highchair. Be prepared to have baby on your lap. But the food is so good it is totally worth it. The only drawback of Paltoquet is that it has a lot of regulars who hang out all morning and make it hard to get a table. It's just so good that no one wants to leave!

Yelp
This had some of the best croissants/french breakfast I have had since I lived in Belgium and France. So I pretty much had like 3 croissants the first morning I came here. It's simply a lovely neighborhood cafe with excellent breakfast, fresh juices, bowls of coffee and amazing baked goods. We ate here 3-4 mornings while in Montreal and felt like we were cheating when we ate anywhere else. You'll need some french to order, this is a neighborhood spot where everyone speaks it, and the patrons might do a double take if they hear you speaking english... but fuck it, the food is damn amazing.

Yelp
Damn good croissants, incredible smoked salmon, great mushroom turnovers. (Yes, I am sure there is a fancier French name for them.) The service was friendly enough, but so extremely slow, which only added to us feeling like we were really at a French cafe. A pleasant sidewalk cafe, great to linger and enjoy a sunny day.

Yelp
The almond croissants are to die for. Worth making the trip from the other end of the island for! Flaky and buttery with a delicious almond paste of some sort in the middle. Can't wait to go back for more!

Yelp
the pistachio and chocolate tart was creamy and delicate. The lemon cake- was like a tiny lemony pound cake shaped like a rose. It was the best I ever had. The texture, the buttery flavor ooh la la. Sadly the croissants were sold out, but I can only imagine what they would have been like based on the two items we tried. Actually there were only a few items left when we arrived in the afternoon-I am sure that is a testament to the quality and deliciousness of their offerings.
