How to Spend 24 Food-Filled Hours in Nevada City Like a Local | Eater SF

"Run by pastry chef Stephany Gocobachi, formerly of Bi-Rite and 20th Century Cafe in San Francisco, this charming bakery—operating since the 1850s—offers a wide array of Mexican desserts including hibiscus, vanilla, and chocolate conchas; be sure to try the seasonal cakes by the slice as well as the Mexican wedding and masa cookies, and on sunny days you can grab a table on the patio, sip a pour-over coffee, and eat your way through the pastry case." - Marisa Churchill

Gorgeous array of baked goods, both sweet and savory. Shared a few things with my son and we ate every last crumb, including the beautiful rose petals on the slice of Olive Oil cake. The tucked away, tree covered patio in the back is the most charming place to enjoy these treats! Will definitely be returning.

This place is such a gem! I wish I found it sooner. We tried most of their conchas and they were seriously to die for. Probably the best conchas I've tried in my adult life. Their unique flavors are dreamy and the contrast between the crunchy topper and the super soft bread was excellent. Even their puerkito was sooo good! I'll be coming back to try their brunch. I hope this place doesn't blow up because I want to keep this bakery all to myself! So happy to have this locally. Their back patio was also such a vibe. Go check it out!

I had no idea the first time I bit into one of her cookies what amazing flavor was awaiting my tastebuds. Every time since, I am continually blown away by the flavors and perfection of each pastry. She is truly a master of her art and I now have my favorite bakery!

I imagine anything made here would be absolute heaven! I only had a Mexican wedding cookie, and it was hands down the best I've ever had. I wish I'd taken home one of everything there. Worth every calorie!!

I was never a fan of conchas…until I tried these conchas! You can taste the high quality ingredients and the care that goes into these. The owner also has some savory varieties along with beautiful cakes, cookies, and coffee & tea. This place is a little gem. Stop in for a coffee & concha, or surprise your co-workers with a dozen…just warm them at home or the office and they taste just as fresh the next day. Great quality. Give it a try.

The pastries here are so amazing. Mexican pastries are usually hard and dry. I'm not sure what kind of voodoo this place uses but the pastries here are soft and delicious. They have some traditional flavors as well as other great favor combinations that I'm always looking forward to trying. Love this place!

This has to be one of my favorite bakeries ever! I love this place so much that a two and half hour drive is worth it. I adore here with all my heart as they offer delicious small batch handcrafted and seasonal desserts with fresh organic peaches from twin peaks for their peaches n cream brioche donut, for example, to their cakes, Mexican pastries such as a wide variety of conchas, cookies, savory buns, tacos, and much more! Everyone is very kind and knowledgeable about every item! If you have any questions, please feel free to ask them and you may be impressed and amazed but their responses. Panadería Matilija also has a beautiful outdoor space to sit and enjoy! I recommend getting your pastries for here because every item comes on a beautiful unique dishware and glassware that I adore very much! So much love goes into this place and it really shows! I can’t wait for my future visits!

Yelp
The cutest little shop perfect for a light lunch! They were open on Sunday for the Christmas market but had a limited menu so we ordered pork tamales and veggie tamales, which were so fresh and tasty! The pork was much heavier than the veggie so choose according to hunger. We also tried the rye oatmeal chocolate chip cookie (hearty and rustic) and a unique masa cookie with hibiscus glaze, which is one of the most interesting desserts I've eaten recently. The subtle earthiness of the masa was offset by the hibiscus tang and sugar glaze Logistics: - one table for 4 inside only, there might have been a back patio but unclear - limited street parking nearby - I think tamales and masa cookie were gluten free but double check

Yelp
My husband and I found ourselves in Nevada City for a little getaway this weekend and trying out this bakery was a highlight for me! We mainly came to try out their conchas and ended up ordering three flavors: coffee, hibiscus rose, and Mexican chocolate. The crumbly coffee crust was the star for me, but all three flavors were delicious. We even ate two of them the next day and it still held up (we just lightly toasted them to warm them up). The owner was sweet and you could tell she put thought into personalizing her space. I hope to come back one day to try other delicious Mexican pastries with an added Californian twist!

Yelp
Amazing, very impressed, can't believe I just discovered this place. Hibiscus concha and masa cookies were 10 out of 10!

Yelp
Came all the way from Reno just to try this bakery! I had heard from a friend that there was a Panaderia that served conchas ( my favorite) with unique flavors, so I had to try it! As soon as we came to the entrance, it was so inviting, very cottage like and the ambience was very comforting and loved seeing all the pan dulces in the case. I ordered every concha flavor, a cochito and their masa cookie along with a hibiscus agua Fresca. The first concha I tried was a lemon verbena concha, and it was delicious! It has a very earthy and well balanced flavor, the bread itself was incredibly soft and brioche like. The masa cookie with hibiscus was well balanced and nostalgic to me because of the masa flavor and their rustic texture. We saved the rest to take home but having the agua fresa was super refreshing on this hot day! We did eat inside but the server at the counter did mention that they had a patio outside, it was well shaded when we took at look and plenty of seating!

Yelp
Really disappointing. I am not the first to be served a rancid pastry and I probably won't be the last person either, as I see there is already another Yelp review about the same issue. I was excited to purchase the cream filled donuts ($8 each), but I was more than disappointed when I bit into them and discovered they were filled with rancid cream. When I contacted the bakery owner, she told me it was my fault and that I should've known that cream filled donuts must be eaten within an hour of preparation because they are "very delicate". Honestly, I wouldn't have written this review if she had just been kind, but she was far from kind. I'd hoped that she'd at least tell me she'd replace the rancid products the next time I came in. She didn't even offer to do that, or offer a refund. Instead, I got message after message about how it was my fault, how fresh her milk and cream always is, and how I should've known better. She told me that I needed to tell her if I planned to save the donuts for more than an hour and that because I didn't do that this was on me. After seeing she was unremorseful, I didn't really want to go back and decided against requesting replacement pastries. I requested a refund, which she said she would give, but never did. A week later, I followed up with her on a day that I knew they were open and she claimed she couldn't find my credit card number. After talking to other locals, I discovered that she has no intention to give me a refund, as she has done this before. I've also spoken to others who said they got food poisoning multiple times after eating here and decided not to return. I worked in food service for 10 years and I know mistakes happen. I've never written a bad review before because I understand that things can go wrong and most businesses try to remediate it with kindness. But in the year this bakery has been open they've shown that this will be their standard. They do not follow food safety compliance, and you will taste it when you bite into rancid cream. If you complain, they will blame you. If you ask for a refund, they will lie and pretend that they don't know how to give it. The lack of integrity is incredible, but I know in a small town like this they won't be able to survive with these business practices. I was hoping to love this new bakery, especially because the offering is very unique to the area. But eating there means risking food poisoning, and bringing it up to them risking gaslighting. Save yourself a bad experience and go to Three Forks for your pastries instead.

Yelp
First I must say TRY THE MASA COOKIE! So unique. Amazing. You can't go wrong. Had a coffee flavored Concha too on the patio in the back. Green and shaded. Amazing soft lightly sweet brioche bun.

Yelp
We stopped by for a treat and loved everything we tried. The bread pudding was especially to die for!

Yelp
The lovely lady who served us was wonderful but when we got home, our $12 slice of cake was rancid. The frosting was rancid and we tried calling three times. I did leave a message to please call me and nobody has. I just think that I'll never go back there again because you don't expect to get something that's rancid and $12 is not a cheap for a slice of cake.

Yelp
This is a great little Mexican bakery in downtown Nevada City. The owners are super nice and they have a nice assortment of pastries. And there's a large patio in the back to sit and have coffee with your pastry. Today I had bread pudding with strawberries and chocolate. Fantastic!

Yelp
Walking by we were waved in by Carlos and we were glad we went in! Near the end of the day Saturday so not a lot left but we bought 2 items to take home. Amazing! We will be returning soon!

Yelp
Stumbled upon this gem during a brief stop through town. Deliciousness all around. I had their signature sweet bread/bun with a chocolate topping & it was amazing. I would make a stop in this charming family run business anytime I am in the area. So so yummy!

Yelp
Baked goods were fantastic. Ate there and took some home. Patio seating a plus. Wonderful service.
