The Best Tacos in Portland, Oregon and Beyond | Eater Portland

"This Reed-area market serves some of the finest carnitas and asada tacos in the area. Both are lusciously marbled with fat, with crispy edges on the asada and carnitas. The pastor is a sleeper hit; no, it’s not roasted on a trompo, but the marinade’s pairing of pineapple and guajillo adds a nice balance to the pork." - Nathan Williams

14 Great PDX Takeout Restaurants to Have a Solo Picnic | Eater Portland

"This unassuming mercado houses a knockout panaderia and taco counter toward the back, with deeply savory cabeza and tangy-spicy pastor tacos in soft, thick tortillas. Cinco de Mayo’s tres leches cake is a worthy dessert, especially when eaten in a secluded spot within the rugged and picturesque Tideman Johnson City Park. Panaderia Cinco de Mayo is open for takeout." - Brooke Jackson-Glidden

Google
Great service, great pricing, and a BIG selection of pan dulce. They even took a special order for empanadas! The tortillas are made in house, and are very large(street style, but with a larger shell). The tortas are GIGANTIC, easily lunch for two. What a gem!

Google
I love this place. My friends order in English and I order in Spanish as some practice for myself and the order is correct every time. The folks who run it are very kind in my experience and the selection of pan dulce is incredible. They even make substitutions or remove things that I don’t like from my order as needed. Also, it’s one of the least expensive burrito spots I’ve found, which is an absolute plus. I drive to this place rather than closer places because the quality and price just cannot be beat.

Google
Good place for Mexican food and candy. They have Mexican bread , they have Mexican drinks , they have coffee , a small store overall

Google
Some of the best tacos I've ever had. House-made tortillas. They're huge and only $1.99 each!

Josh Powell

Google
The carnitas tacos are incredible. So good that I almost don't want to send this review, because I don't want to share!

Google
Came here today to buy the Rosca and I was skeptical because most places that sell this on this day are not so flavorful. I was impressed with this Rosca! Very nice moist and flavorful!

Google
This place has changed a lot in the last five years. A little beat up, but food is good. ⭐️ ⭐️⭐️

Google
Great place to get very good mexican food to go as there is limited indoor seating. The panaderia is good as well, also you can purchase spices, dried chili and other mexican grocery items. Staff is always friendly!

Yelp
The food here is staying consistently good! The gentleman took our order and was friendly and helpful. Few changes have happened inside to make more room around where you order and wait for food - good call as it was previously pretty crowded. We ordered. The carnitas quesadilla, asada burrito and langua taco. The wait was minimal and we were headed home. The carnitas quesadilla was big and both my girls couldn't finish it. The meat was flavorful and tender. There was minimal grease. The asada burrito was big and had good proportion of meat, beans and rice - well balanced. The langua was great! Flavorful and tender with big chunks! I will continue to return

Yelp
Ah, Panadería (as we lovingly shorten it to in our house because we all know this is the place we're talking about) immediately makes me think of value. When we're craving Mexican food that won't break the bank, this is the spot. It's a grocery store and a restaurant, and they're currently making more seating area to accommodate that. We usually take our food to go. I love being able to go order my food, pick some delicious fresh pastries, grab a drink and browse the store. The cheese cake is my favorite pastry and I could honestly just get a bag full of those and be totally content. I don't think I've ever had a single complaint about my food, the service, or anything about this place. It may not be the most gourmet of food, but it sure is delicious and at a decent price.
google avatar

Brayan L.

Yelp
Not going to lie the food is good but the hygiene is highly questionable. The bread always has little flies flying around inside the windows. Which is why I stopped going there because it makes me question the food.
google avatar

Jacob K.

Yelp
I ordered a burrito and it was almost all rice. Barely any meat. If I'm going to spend $15 on a burrito you can at least make it right!
google avatar

Mackenzie M.

Yelp
They made us a birthday cake. Tres Leches. It was delicious and so affordable. Highly recommend.
google avatar

Steven B.

Yelp
The concha was soft and fresh but the crunchy topping wasn't as good as a competing Mexican grocery. The other bread items were nice and fresh. It's a small place with limited market items yet they do have a couple of quesos my go to Mexican grocery doesn't have. The baked goods sélection it ok but not huge. And, they charge you 50 cents to use a debit or credit card.
google avatar

Yelp
Great find! Quaint neighborhood Mexican Tienda, Bakery & mostly take out food. Very friendly owners and great service. Had the delicious tacos. The Flan & tres leches cake were fabulous! Thank you to the wonderful staff. A+++
google avatar

Yelp
I bought a Tres Leches cake for my family celebration, it was delightful. Truly delicious. Will be back for a made to order cake. Quick friendly service.

Yelp
I was really excited to try this place out. Especially after looking at pictures and reviews. The salsa bar I saw in the pictures doesn't exist. The various types of salsa I saw didn't exist. Only two types. Red or green. Green had better flavor in my opinion but both of them had no spice. I don't want to be to harsh with this review. I will go back and try something else off the menu. The carne asada burrito I had was mediocre at best. It was big that's for sure. But the rice to meat ration was off and the meat didn't taste fresh at all. I really try not to be negative in my reviews. But like I said I was disappointed from all this pictures I saw to what reality was. Next time I'm trying a torta and a taco. Give them a try and let me know what you think.

Yelp
Tiny tiny store with very little in product. Was looking for chilies in a can , canned tomatillos , spices

Yelp
Yes, this place is definitely a hole in the wall. We came for the tacos, and we were not disappointed. We tried the carnitas, el pastor, and the cabeza tacos. 5 tacos cost us $10. They were generous with the filling and all were delicious! All tacos were topped with onions and cilantro. There is a salsa bar with additional condiments for the tacos. We grabbed the salsa, but steered clear of the pico de gallo and other pickled items. They did not look fresh at all. Not sure I would venture further than the tacos here. Lack of customers may cause items to sit for a little too long.
google avatar

Chezz C.

Yelp
Outrageously good. The rice and beans are greasy and fabulous. Every taco meat stands out. The lengua is chunky and tender, probably the best I've ever had. I haven't had tripas often but this one is terrific, smoky, with a nice chewiness. Tortillas are good. Staff is friendly. Store is fun to explore. Why am I wasting time writing this instead of running back there now?
google avatar

Kaori F.

Yelp
Phenomenal tripe tacos in an intimate setting! One of my all time fave taquerias in the States.
google avatar

Yelp
Great fresh conchas. Small local business with fresh baked goods and other items. Excited to know that they're here!
google avatar

Yelp
Delicious chorizo taco and burrito. Pan de dulce are fab and the torta bread is perfectly made.
google avatar

Reece C.

Yelp
Best pan dulce EVER!!! Stuff is addicting! 3 huge Tacos (made with fresh tortillas) for $15- worth every penny!
google avatar

Amanda M.

Yelp
Not the best taco place unfortunately .... Taco portion, 3.25 price tacos. I ordered carnitas tacos and the meat was very dry, single tortilla. Green sauce didn't have much flavor either. Small hole in the wall, maybe their burritos might be better! Wouldn't necessarily not recommend, but maybe order something else

J S.

Yelp
***Al Pastor*** Enough said. Order too many tacos and enjoy. Backstory: In search of the best tacos in town my journey led me to two places, Panderia Mexicana Cinco De Mayo on 32nd (not 82nd) and El Yucateco in NE Sandy Blvd. I most find myself frequenting the much farther restaurant, Panderia Cinco De Mayo, I've tried their lengua, asada, chorizo, barbacoa and al pastor. Always brought back to my two favorite, al pastor and the second, chorizo.

Silas O.

Yelp
AMAZING - I am simply raving! This is a hidden gem (hole in the wall, if you will). Highly recommend the baked goods here. While I don't know all the different names, there is a cake that is cut into squares and then triangles that is divine. About $1 per slice. Food is excellent at a fair price point as well. Go for the Rojo Asado Enchiladas. Delicious! Meat was a bit over cooked, but the flavors came through big time. Red and green salsas are both made in-house. I liked the red better. Both are spicy and tasty. Will be back!!

Yelp
My family of 4 orders a variety of items to cover the spectrum of delicious Mexican food. Today, we had tacos, burritos, and a quesadilla, with Carnitas, Barbacoa, Pollo (shredded), and Pastor. ALL GREAT. The Carnitas was a bit dried out, but the flavor was spot on. We loved the 3 salsas they sent us home with, 2 kinds of green and 1 red. they were fresh, spicy, and acidic. Carnitas was saved! The burritos were a great size. The quesadilla was huge, and full of meat. The tacos were on homemade corn tortillas. They were bigger than the usual doubled up white corn tortillas. These were soft and did not rip.

Yelp
Al pastor all day! Go here and get two al pastor tacos ($1.99 each and huge). Slather them with salsas and lime juice from their little salsa bar (don't miss the avocado cream salsa!) Sit down in their no-frills seating area. Enjoy. Life is good. This spot continues to be my favorite taqueria in town by far. The tortas are ginormous. Their bakery is no joke as well, with assorted Mexican baked goods (including tres leches cake!!) and a small grocery area. They have a small grocery section as well. The ONLY complaint I have is that the beloved salsa bar is inconsistently stocked: they don't always have each salsa all the time. On a recent visit they had no red for instance. Occasionally they're out of the avocado cream salsa. But life is about change, not stagnation! Mix it up. Enjoy your tacos. Or torta. Or dinner plate.

Yelp
We come here every year for the rosca and pan dulce since 2010. Great family-owned business, quality seevice with all your essential needs. Also they have a lunchera outside that serves great food!!
google avatar

Ashley F.

Yelp
!! Do Not Eat Here unless you want to bite into a piece of metal !!! Took my first bite of the worst tasting Carne Asada I've ever put in my mouth (literally tasted like sh**), hard old lowest-grade meat possible. I bit down into what looked like a large metal staple or clasp that was inside the burrito...it tore into my gums. I did speak to the "manager" to let them know, and got my $5 refunded. No major damage to my teeth thank goodness, and the manager did offer to make an insurance report. But I just settled for a refund. I can deal with bad tasting food, but damn really? Metal in your burritos??? Someone isn't doing their job correctly there. This place has a wide selection of sugary baked goods and mexican candies that I grew up with. They should just stick with that.
google avatar

Summer G.

Yelp
Shady on the outside, delicious on the inside. This is exactly the way I like my Taquerias! Food was really good and very cheap! I also like that it is a very small Mexican grocery store and Panaderia so if you're feeling frisky after you finish your lunch, you can grab a concha or a piece of what looks to be the best Tres Leche cake ever on your way out (I didn't try it but I definitely will in the future.) Don't be scared by the outside! Go in and give it a try!
google avatar

Angie R.

Yelp
Lovely tres leches cake. Only$20. Moist and fresh! Plus, there are churros and a large variety of Mexican products and eats here!!

Yelp
A neighborhood favorite. These kinds of family owned businesses are nuggets of culture and in this case Mexican. You can't deny that if you close your mind to what's outside the doors you can transport yourself to a small town in Mexico. The TV is blaring a soccer game. You can smell the tamales in the back or wafts of sugary goodness when someone opens the plexiglass doors from the baked goods area. There is chatter about, children squealing for candy, people enjoying lunch or dinner in the small seating area just a few feet from the grocer section. You can't deny you've entered a different world, a festive world filled with items you may never have experienced if you've only sat in front of a computer and not ventured out your front doors I come to this Panaderia for one thing - their pan dulce. It's fresh and authentic. Well, it better damn well be. Pan Dulce is a blanket term for the variety of conchas, tres leche and galleta. I have tried to bake my own conchas and it's not easy but this panaderia does it right. You gotta get them when their fresh right out of the oven paired with a cup of coffee - sublime. I tend to buy all of the kinds knowing good and well the yellow and pink ones are coloured. But eh - I can't eat just one. The wife loves the tamales and they are just like my Mother (born in Mexico mind you) made back when she was with us - fresh meat, soft masa, flavorful and seasoned perfectly. Reviews in the past complain about the prices and the rule of thumb is this - if you want quality you pay for quality. If you want something for free you make it yourself and it's still not free with that method. I guess those Oregonians think ingredients are free 'cause they shoplift handfuls from the bins at WinCo. But for the rest of us who appreciate the fair prices, great quality and selection at Cinco de Mayo Panaderia, we applaud them for the experience and delight for being here. Fiesta first then Siesta! Check 'em out. You'll be glad you did.

Yelp
The food here is absolutely incredible and the service was so kind. The atmosphere even felt like I was in Mexico. I can't say this enough, This is some of the best Mexican food I've had in Portland. 10/10!
google avatar

Bianca E.

Yelp
FOOD IS AMAZING. Homemade tortillas, awesome tacos, fresh pan dulce, wow! This is the only food I ate while experiencing morning sickness during my pregnancy--it is all the makings of comfort food!!!!
google avatar

Scott H.

Yelp
I've seen this place a lot but never eaten. It's a little unclear where everything is but once you get your bearings it makes senses. Love the pastor. Huge chunks of sweet and spicy tender pork in a homemade tortilla for less than two bucks. I come out this way a lot and the pastor taco will be a regular treat. The asada was a little bland. Rarely will I give five on the merits of one dish over the others but this pastor is worth six.
google avatar

Ronelle C.

Yelp
I adore this place! From the amazing authentic home cookin' Mexican food to the totally delicious donuts and baked goods. In my opinion, this place has the best donuts and Churros in PDX (just a few varieties of American donuts, but as a traditional-style donut fan the few they have beat out all the others and are on-par with Sesame and Joes up in Sandy). This is a Mexican convenience store with a kitchen and bakery...so, nothing fancy schmancy here, just REAL DEAL amazing food and groceries. A quiet gem, right in my own neighborhood. Yum and lucky me!
google avatar

Andy R.

Yelp
All you Oregonian's need to try real Mexican "street tacos". I cannot believe this place is rated 5 stars?? I specifically drove here because of the 5 star reviews. I ordered 2 of each taco. Pastor, Asada & Carnitas. They aren't even in the same league as the taquerias in Central California. They're not even in the same ballpark!! The asada and pastor I couldn't even tell which was which. If you are from California and know what a real taqueria should taste like, don't waste your time here. If it's the only thing you know, then have at it.
google avatar

Josh T.

Yelp
On my quest for trying taco plates in the PDX metro, this was a unique one. In a small store and had some tasty food. I'll have to try it again. A solid 8 out of 10. You can also buy piñatas here if you're bored.
google avatar

Nina N.

Yelp
I've definitely wanted to try this place out after seeing how well the reviews were. It's a great madre and padre shop with a bunch of authentic cultural flare. There were a ton of people in line to order some freshly made baked goods. I didn't get a chance to try it this time but maybe the next! We were definitely here for the tacos. My bf and I each got some Carne Asada and Pastor. And it was definitely way bigger than I expected. You get your moneys worth for $1.99. The Asada was a bit tougher and chewier than I would have liked. They give you a lot of salsa options to flavor the tacos a bit more too. But there was any water available anywhere but they do have coke! So that's a plus when you're digging in. The Pastor was probably both of our favorites. Since I ordered way too much I just enjoyed two of the Pastor and only the first Asada I had and had to throw the other one away. All in all this place also has a lot of different spices, items for cooking, and a lot of Mexican favorites for candies and such. It made me feel happy to see a bit of diversity just south of Sellwood. I can see why it's a neighborhood favorite! I'd love to give this place another shot next time my Bf is craving tacos.
google avatar

Titus L.

Yelp
Their tacos and burritos are amazing and their salsa is really nice and spicy and it is a place that if you want Mexican food that's the place to go lol
google avatar

Sean P.

Yelp
I have a thing for tacos. It doesn't have to be Tuesday (but it's a sure thing if it is), so I've had my fare share of tacos, including decades in Southern California. This place just took my top spot for Portland taco joints, and might just be my favorite taco spot ever. Crispy and delectable asada, juicy pastor, and to-die for carnitas. Wow, just wow. The tacos aren't tiny little street tacos despite their ridiculously cheap price, but packed full of deliciousness and hearty. Dude in front of me ordered 5, so I'm thinking "oh, they must be small" until the order-taker asked him "those 5 are all for you?" with a raised eyebrow. Good thing I needed that look, as there would have been no chance I could have eaten 5, even as good as they are. Cheap, great eats! I'm coming back again. And again. Who cares about the "seedy" ambiance of the place? It's a charming hole-in-the-wall. Love it!
google avatar

Ejiro I.

Yelp
Over priced!!!! Prices have changed so please check for updated prices. Waited over ten minutes for one taco with only two other orders in the Que. Think twice before coming here please!!!

Ceci M.

Yelp
I used to like this place very much and I like to support local business. I drove all the way from West Linn today to get a "Rosca de Reyes" and it was dry and burned on the bottom. So sad because I will NOT buy one from them again. They also charge a fee to use the credit card. I am in search now of an outstanding "panadería".
google avatar

Jerry M.

Yelp
Cinco De Mayo has that "homespun Mexican taqueria" look that I can't resist, so I had to stop in and try their tacos. They are actually a combination bakery, grocery store, and taqueria. I saw signs out front that said their tortillas are handmade, and that's a plus. I ordered three tacos: Carne Asada, Carnitas, and Al Pastor. They have a small seating area off to the side so I ate there. First of all, the good part is that their handmade tortillas had sort of a fluffy quality which made them better than the usual tortillas you get at most other taco places. Unfortunately, the disappointing part is that the Carne Asada was quite gristly and the meat seemed to be randomly cut into various inconsistent sized pieces which makes for sort of an uneven, squishy load inside a tortilla. Also, the Carnitas was damp and runny, and I bit into two BIG pieces of cartilage, which was unpleasant. What saved my meal from being a total disappointment was the Al Pastor. It was a pleasantly spicy/sweet. . .and (thankfully) didn't contain any gristle or cartilage. Yes, the Al Pastor alone was pretty good. This place will not be a "destination" taco place for me, although I might stop in for the Al Pastor if I was hungry and also happened to be nearby.
google avatar

Will H.

Yelp
One of the best taco spots in the area. Friendly people, excellent food, great prices.

Frida C.

Yelp
The food from this place was not good at all!! I asked for tortas of asada and the meat was really poor quality it had lots of fat. And not all the tortas has lettuce, and there's avocado only in one half of the torta. I also ordered tacos the asada and the meat look red and lots of fat as well. The bread however wasn't as bad but also not the best I've ever tasted.

Ài R.

Yelp
The best tamales and tacos in town! The al pastor and the carnitas are so tasty and the tamales are the best tamales I've ever had!
google avatar

Open Your Mind P.

Yelp
This is the first place I've found with warm Mexican pastries at 9am in the morning. The fresh breads were delicious. The place over all is small only went for the pastries and was not disappointed at all. The freshest I've found so far.
google avatar

Rachael R.

Yelp
Ultimate comfort food! Oh I have missed authentic Mexican food and this did not disappoint. They serve the best refried beans with homemade tortillas with their amazeballs carnitas. Mmmmmm
google avatar

Jeff R.

Yelp
FANTASTIC! I needed to find really good pan dulce for a get together with friends. I checked the Yelp reviews, and they were right -- this is THE PLACE to get authentic pan dulce in Portland! This small shop is as puro méxicano as you can get. It's a small convenience store connected to a small taco eatery. This place could have been picked up directly from Brownsville TX or Matamoros Tamps. If you're looking for anything you'd find in a Mexican convenience store, this place will have it. In particular, their pan dulce was amazing! They had every variety I've ever seen, and even introduced me to a couple I hadn't. When I got to the get together, my friends descended on the pan dulce like piranhas on a hamburger. Most of the box didn't last until after dinner -- the churros went so fast, I never even got one. :-/ You can't go wrong here. There are literally no bad choices. If you need a good selection of Mexican pastries, run (don't walk) to this place!
google avatar

Neal W.

Yelp
I almost feel bad paying so little for the scrumptious pastries here. The churros are easily the best I've had, and probably the best pastry available. My other favorites I lovingly refer to as the "Custard Tunnel" and "Creamy Bun". I don't know what their real names are. The names I chose are pretty accurate though and pretty much describe what the pastries are like, so there! The food here is also cheap and very good for the price. The groceries are cheap as well and they carry of the necessary groceries for Mexican food. It's kind of a 3-1 pastry shop/grocery store/taqueria. I frequent this place, since I live very close.
google avatar

Dixon M.

Yelp
This place is AMAZING! I do some catering, and when I do, I have them custom bake bollilos for me (a different size than their standard). They always do them perfectly. Their pan dulce is the best I have had anywhere, and I often pick up a big box to bring to a party. A secret I hate to share because they often run out: I am in love with their "pan con jalapeños y jamon!" it's a delicious roll baked with jalapeños, cream cheese, and a touch of ham INSIDE. This might get me in trouble with my friends: I always buy one or two of these and eat them myself in the car on the way.
google avatar

Ben S.

Yelp
My friend and I went though a secret passage from the Springwater corridor to here. Terrorized by Milwaukie drivers for the two blocks we rode on SE 32nd, we made it unscathed to the nondescript tienda storefront. Locked up, and inside were greeted by a mexi-wonderland. It was like we were teleported to Mexico. Wonderful taco and salsas! Amazing pan dulce! "Boing, the sound of fruit!" Totally amazing. Tacos are still $1.25. Lengua and pastor were very good, and the tripas were apparently pretty good also. Piñatas, great spice selection... Don't wreck it though, ok? Let's keep it cool.

Brie K.

Yelp
There's not much more to say that hasn't already been stated by others. This place deserves the hype. Originally from SoCal, so I've got some expectations for mexican food and this is the first place my husband and I have found that not only meets our street tacos expectations but exceeds it. Got the quesadilla and al pastor tacos and was NOT disappointed.
google avatar

Goldmine C.

Yelp
This is one of my FAVORITE secret spots in Portland!! Well, Milwaukie actually. Not only is it the BEST Mexican Bakery in the Portland area, but it's also a great TAQUERIA. Try the chicken Huarache! For bakery items everything is great but my favorites are their conchas and churros. Not to mention they have the most incredible Tres Leches cake which you can buy by the slice, or order an entire cake for parties. Plus, it's so cheap! A MUST TRY!!
