A Perfect Way to Spend a Day Eating and Drinking Through Santa Barbara - Eater LA

"But if you’re craving pan dulce from a traditional Mexican bakery, Panaderia Veronica is a two-block walk from the beach. It’s cash-only and opens at 5 a.m. until everything sells out. Opt for one of the many sugar-covered conchas, or the savory chicken and green chile tamales." - Matthew Kang

Google
Where to get the good stuff. Parking crowded but worth it. Go early.

They will short you if you're not careful

This is the best pace to go for authentic Mexican Sweet Bread. It's baked fresh every morning. I love knowing I can count on Veronicas for a variety of delicious fresh sweet bread when I come, either for one concha or a few dozen. They even sell tamales!!!

Fantastic place and super fresh product!

Google
This place use to be better, the tamales were once the best in town but now they are becoming more and more dry, more dough then meat, more undercooked, more careless then before... I remember when the owners took pride in this place, seems like they are becoming complacent just like other shop owners. Half the time they undercooked or they don't make enough.

Google
Wow, usually pretty good but this recent time I found someone’s hair in my tamale. It was actually inside the husk, I could see it and pulled it out. I ordered 8 tamales and had to throw some away.

Mario Galicia

Google
Great food quality, unfortunately, EVERY TIME I go, I always get short changed with my tamal order. I paid for 12, but only received 11 today. Last time I got 14, when I paid for 18. At $2/ tamal that's $10 in two visits that they've taken from me; us all the other tamales they've shorted us on before.. I tried to give them another chance after last time, but this is it. I'm really disappointed, I drove from UCSB all the way downtown, just to get ripped off.

Yelp
The pastries and cookies cakes are the best in Santa Barbara. It's all baked at the store. Value for money is excellent! Dean

Yelp
They had a great selection of pastries and were very helpful and friendly with our purchase! Cash only so being the $$

Yelp
If in the SB area and never tried Mexican pastries, I would suggest coming here or perhaps if you love Mexican pastries. First time trying Mexican pastry with my friend. We both got the pan dulce sweet bread, pink and white colored bread. It was VERY SUGARY. Perhaps, that's how it should be but it made my stomach hurt.

Yelp
Saturday morning 8:30am (after Black Friday) - not crowded - seems standard Mexican baked goods - enjoyed the pork tamale but it is too spicy (green Chile?) for kids - pork torta also warm and tasty Would return if we lived closer!!

Laurie C.

Yelp
All the pan dulce sold here is fresh and delicious. But get there early cause they sell out pretty quick.

Yelp
Bottom Line: An awesome local bakery Ive been coming here since my son was born seven years ago. We used to come in at 5am to get warm Bolillos and the folks that work here are always super friendly, the bread is always awesome and I always come back. I filled a bag full of randoms and brought it into work the other day and people loved it and were asking where it came from. This place is great - you need to check it out if you havent yet!!

Yelp
Polvorones!!!! The best I've had in a long time! And huge!!!! I'm just talking about the pink sugar cookies, which are my favorite. It's not overly sweet or lardy. Lots of places are just blah and leave that film in the mouth from all the lard. I enjoyed it so much I had to come back before going back home. I also bought their bread, which was freshly baked. Omg so good!!! I was bummed they were out of conchas. I bet it's delicious as well. Definitely coming back here when I'm in town.

Yelp
My review is based off of the most delicious jalapeño and cream cheese breads. I can't get over how soft and rich in flavor they are. I feel like I am their number one fan because I have my dad go in early, and I mean early because they sell out (like everything else) on weekends but I can't vouch for the bread I think its stale but it's always gone lol so it may be good to the certain taste buds. P.S this place is champurado approved

Yelp
Placed and paid for a special order a week prior to the date needed. Come day of pick up no order was baked. The owner had sent all bakers home so she had someone bake it for me last minute. She offered me another similar bread but it would not work for what I needed the special order for. 2hrs later I got a call saying "your order is ready and close in 5min" wth?! We rushed over to receive attitude when we got there. This bread is usually fluffy - it smelled delicious but flat and baked in a rush obviously. I don't know if i will do business with them again.

Yelp
While I was in town, I wanted to check out this panaderia. It's located in a small strip mall. Parking is tight. I was lucky because someone had just left. The shop isn't what I'm used to in the bay, this is a big place, but they don't really utilize it to their advantage, more like storage. Did some research before going here, picked up the round, cheese like pastry, it's good. My favorite is their blanco cookie, crumbly and tasty. Didn't see any champurado or atole, maybe ideas for later and also look into making tamales??? Eh? So...yes I'd go back, but I hope they expand some more, they have the space to do it.

Yelp
Small bakery with great options. The breads are very fresh and reminds me of my childhood growing up. From what I hear you should go early in the morning before 9am to buy fresh daily made tamales. Time is of the essence so don't be late and miss out. Just an inside scoop for you tamale lovers.

Yelp
We found this gem in the middle of Santa Barbara! We were passing through town headed up north. We stopped to get ice but we found this bakery. This bakery served authentic pan dulce. The bread was so sweet and soft and delicious! I highly recommend any one who lives here or anyone passing through to stop by. The lady at the register was very nice and even sold me a piece of abuelita chocolate after I told her I was looking for a store near by that sold it. She went to the back and sold me some of their own. The bakery itself had a lot of clientele when we came in, so it looked to me as if we found a the spot in town for bread!

Yelp
So I came here because I read great reviews about the bread and the bolillo with cheese and jalapeños. They literally only had 2 pieces of jalapeño. Not so good. I would had liked more jalapeños!! The bread wasn'that great either. We went early morning and they hardly had any bread. They had sweep trash pile up in all over the bakery. And customer service was mediocre.

Yelp
Supersize portions, delicious, fresh pan dulce! Some of the breads could seem "dense" compared to smaller sized pastries, but that does not mean Veronica is dry or bland. Quite the opposite! Every variety I tried, and brought back on a plane with me to NYC, (authentic pan dulce is hard to come by here) was so scrumptious, fresh, and flavorful. Reminded me of what I ate growing up as a kid :) I brought back so much in fact that I stored pieces in the freezer, which held together really well and were delicious both eaten cold or defrosted. Panaderia Veronica is cash only, and from the street perhaps looks closed but it's not. Go into the parking lot and you'll find this little gem open, fresh pan dulce awaiting you!

Jewel D.

Yelp
The pan dulce was very good. However, we were very disappointed with the tamales - the masa was very good and flavorful but there was very little meat (pork) filling. The tamales consisted of mostly masa :-(
google avatar

Spencer F.

Yelp
I had the best tasting chicken tamale I've ever tasted. The corn masa flavor was perfect, and the mixture of green chili and chicken was very flavorful. I also purchase a variety of sweets. Everything I sampled was fabulous, and the owner was really nice and friendly.

Yelp
This place has amazing bakery selections to choose from. I love the items that I tried and will be back once again. You won't be disappointed coming here.

Yelp
Delicious! If you are not familiar with pan dulce this place may not be for you. Pan dulce is very cheap in Latin countries so you should not expect French style or gourmet baked goods. If you are however familiar with it, this place has a great selection for good prices. Again, this is not cake, or brownies, or cookies. It's called "pan dulce" which means sweet bread in English. So yes, the pastries are very much like bread with a little bit of sweetness. Their cheese pie, or "pay de queso" is one of my favorites. I would recommend to anyone looking for a good panaderia.

Maria Q.

Yelp
Bread was great. Warm, soft and delicious! Some pan dulce tends to dry out and get hard quickly but not this one!! Moist and fluffy. Coffee however was weak and place was a bit dirty and unorganized. Should consider cleaning a bit more and organizing so as to take advantage of the large space and not look so chaotic

can always count on them to have fresh bread ! does not matter what time of day it is !! you have to try their champurrado bomb.com

Local L.

Yelp
The best pan in Santa Barbara I'm usually their when they open at 4:30am the boracho are my favorite and on the weekends they have tamales And theirs usually a huge line so that tells you a lot
google avatar

Desiree P.

Yelp
Awesome little gem! This bakery has the freshest, most delicious bread. No joke, I took bread to my work in Camarillo one morning and a coworker said "wow! This bread tastes like the bread from a bakery on Milpas I used to go to!" It's that good! The tamales and tortas are to die for!
google avatar

EJ M.

Yelp
This location has the best tres leches cake in town ! The consistancy is that of pure moisture awesomeness , they sell by the slice and is always in stock . If you're a fan of the cake.. This is the real deal.
google avatar

Alicia R.

Yelp
This panaderia has so many great breads to choose from. I love the cheesecake and their tres leches cake. I always come home with more bread than I plan on. Everything is tastes fresh and is clean.
google avatar

Marcial S.

Yelp
I love this bakery!!! Their conchas are so soft fit for a king!!! By far the best panaderia that I have ever been to!!! Their closing time is funny: it is when they run out of bread!!! Yeah they are that awesome!!! Only thing is cash only. You will have to go to the gas station accross the street for atm services. However the bread is totally worth it!!!!

Tito G.

Yelp
Best pan in town ! Has all the favorite selections and good sized too. Great staff, helpful and answer all your questions. J u st found out they sell tamales, will defiantly be trying those soon !

Yelp
So delicious... Freshest bread & best tamales around! I actually live in Ventura and drive out to Santa Barbara JUST TO GO TO THE BAKERY!!! That's how good it is. If you live in SB or are in the area, do yourself a favor and stop by and check it out!
