Where to Eat Chilaquiles in Chicago - Eater Chicago

"Pancakes are the obvious headliners at Pancake Café and Bar, and with only four Mexican-inspired items on the menu, the red chilaquiles are a pleasant surprise. The tomato-based sauce is subtly spicy, and the chips are crispy and not overly soggy. The plate is served with two eggs and sour cream on the side." - Brenda Storch

Google
Great spot! Pancake Cafe has an amazing location with a relaxed vibe and great outdoor seating—perfect for a weekend brunch. The pancakes were absolutely delicious, some of the best I’ve had in a while—flavorful, and cooked just right. I highly recommend them. I was a bit disappointed with the corned beef hash. It was on the dry side and lacked the flavor I was hoping for. Still, the overall experience was very positive, and I’ll definitely be back for more pancakes!

Google
Stopped by Pancake Café in Wrigleyville for brunch, and it was a solid choice. I ordered the red velvet pancakes—super fluffy with just the right amount of sweetness—and my friend had the sausage Benedict, which was hearty and satisfying. The portions were generous, and the service was friendly, though the place was pretty packed, so there was a bit of a wait. We spent around $40 for the two of us, which felt reasonable given the quality and portion sizes. The atmosphere was cozy and inviting, making it a great spot to relax and enjoy a meal. Overall, a great local spot for brunch; just be prepared for a bit of a crowd during peak times.

Google
Super delicious spot. I got the BLT and it was AMAZING. the bacon is so thick and crispy but juicy at the same time. Also, not pictured are the pancakes. They are SO GOOD. Definitely will be coming back.

Google
I took my class and if y’all trip to the café. It’s located down the block from my school and the service we received was incredible. Jerry was absolutely lovely and so kind and understanding with my students as they practice their English skills to order their menu items. We had the best time and I so love supporting this local business in our community. I can’t see enough of great things about this restaurant. Very grateful that it’s in our backyard. The food is incredible. You get on pancakes with every omelette and hash browns it’s such great value!

Google
Solid breakfast place, average prices for the area. If you have leisure time and can have cocktails it's an enjoyable place. If you don't drink or are in a hurry it's not as pleasant.

Google
Pure magic! From the moment you walk in, you’re wrapped in an unforgettable atmosphere filled with good vibes, mouthwatering food, and a team that treats you like family. This place isn’t just a restaurant — it’s an experience you’ll crave again and again. Hands down my number one spot! And don’t even get me started on the iconic Sunrise Margarita — a sip of sunshine in a glass. Unforgettable, unbeatable, and absolutely addictive!🥇🏆

Google
I came here for the first time in 4 years, gave the restaurant another chance on the expectation that customer service improved but I was sadly mistaken. The breakfast included veggie cheese omelette, breakfast potatoes, chocolate chip pancakes and coffee which were all good. The server was nice enough to substitute hash browns for breakfast potatoes but charged me extra for switching to a different pancake from regular one which doesn't make sense. The server was nowhere to be found, didn't ask if I needed anything and took forever to come at my table in case I had any request. She was wearing a blue shirt, had an accent and the name is Milica N. After the payment, she looked at the amount in the terminal and said "Tips are not included in the total amount". I am not sure what she meant but it's the customer's decision to tip or not. While I was leaving, she didn't smile, say thank you and gave a mean expression. I am not sure what's the reason but there was no need for an attitude and such type of behavior is unacceptable. I won't be returning at this location.

Google
Awesome little place that by it's name gets mistaken for a bfast only spot! It's open on the weekend until 10, go see Jerry for the best Bloody Mary you'll ever drink! Friendly staff, outdoor cafe, amazing food! Great neighborhood place to relax!

Yelp
This is our go-to breakfast spot! We have been here many times and every dish we have ever tried has been delicious! It is usually pretty busy so there might be a slight wait for a table if you have a larger group. But for a group of 2 we can usually get a table immediately or find a spot to sit at the bar and eat. The staff is always very welcoming and they're very quick to get your order in and get your food out. Eating here in the perfect start to any day!

Yelp
Second time at Pancake Cafe, first time ordering takeout. A few hostesses greeted me and smiled as I arrived to pickup my food. Everything was delicious and will be a repeat breakfast spot I'll go to.

Yelp
My favorite spot. Zach is an amazing bartender. Great personality and wonderful To talk too!!! Will be back to see him!

Yelp
Pancake cafe is true to their name- offering incredible pancakes. We ordered the side of pancakes and were blown away by how perfect the quality was- sweet (but not too sweet), light and fluffy with hints of vanilla. If you are in search of a sweet breakfast this would be a top place to go. The hickory smoked ham was golden, crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside. The meat lovers omelette was okay (not incredibly flavorful) but we enhanced it with a side of gravy for dipping- which we would recommend. It was a cute place with plenty of seating. The severs were kind, attentive and accommodating.

Yelp
Everything I ordered off of the menu here was good. I got the French toast seen in my pictures and it was much better than I was expecting. I was afraid it would be too sweet, but they did a really good job of balancing between being too sweet and not sweet enough. I also really liked the huevos rancheros. It's not the best I've had, but it was still good. The eggs Benedict were amazing. I usually don't like them, but I found myself asking my friend to try larger pieces of her dish. Finally, the music playing was nice and the cafe has a nice vibe to it.

Yelp
Place was crowded on a Sunday morning. They gave us a 10 minute wait time and ended up waiting around 30 minutes instead. Seemed like they only had 1 server helping out the whole first potion of the restaurant which took longer. They do have many gluten free friendly option. And food was fresh.

Luca F.

Yelp
A fantastic breakfast spot. The chorizo skillet was excellent and most of the food I saw going past looked really good. Service was excellent, as the staff filled up my coffee and water. Nice music in the cafe and they have screens for sport too.

Yelp
Zach ate up with the drinks!!!! Great service and amazing ambience :) Extraordinary conversation with zach

Yelp
Super great corner slot offering elevated brunch options. Large portions and hot food. Great service too! Enjoyed the eggs, bacon and crispy hashbrowns and my friend loved the eggs Benedict. Will be back!

Yelp
The location, ambiance, and overall aesthetic is what drew me into Pancake cafe. I ordered a black coffee, the $4 fruit bowl, and the fruit crepe. I loved the welcoming and helpful servers, especially at 9am. The fruit bowl was underwhelming and similar to those at high end hotels. I wouldn't order again unless it had berries or grapes. ***I added two blueberries from the fruit crepe into the fruit bowl for the photo*** Anything other than strawberries, pruny pineapples, and cantaloupe please and I would order it again. The fruit crepe had blueberries and strawberries. I don't usually order crepes, but this was alright. I wouldn't order it again either, there wasn't anything special about it. I would come here again to try the skirt steak.

Dominika D.

Yelp
Zach was amazing!!! Great service best drinks in Lakeview I've ever had. Will be back just for him.

Yelp
I stayed the night in the area before a Cubs day game and wanted to go out for breakfast nearby because I wasn't craving hotel food. Pancake Cafe was less than a 10 minute walk from my hotel and it was a nice morning, so I headed there. My order consisted of a bacon and cheese omelette with crispy hash browns and a side of pancakes. Everything I ordered was cooked expertly and tasted fantastic. The omelette had a good amount of bacon and cheese in it, they were able to make the hash browns crispy without burning them, and the pancakes were fluffy and sweet enough where you don't necessarily need syrup. I was surprised to see how large the side of pancakes were and the fact they were two of them. The service was friendly and attentive too. For the money, the food was a great value. The area is well maintained and not too far from Wrigley Field, so I could easily see myself stopping again the next time I go to a day game.

Yelp
This place has great seating options for everyone, either outside, at the bar, or in a cozy booth. I can't stress this enough but please do yourself a favor and order pancakes when coming here. Service is quick, friendly, and professional.

Yelp
Took my grandsons out for breakfast and enjoyed the meal. I had the breakfast quesadilla and loaded hash browns, the boys had chocolate chip pancakes and bacon pancakes. Everything was tasty, filling and had great presentation. Service was attentive and professional and the dining room inviting.
google avatar

Abby F.

Yelp
I liked pancake cafe! I ordered the most basic egg, hash brown, and pancake breakfast and it hit the spot. Their pancakes were light and fluffy and the eggs were cooked perfectly.
google avatar

Brooke L.

Yelp
Cute little breakfast spot down the street from our new house! There is something for everyone here - I personally can't resist a belgian waffle with a little powdered sugar and there's was cooked perfectly! We also got the corned beef hash which had a ton of flavor. Huge portion sizes here and most orders come with more than one side. This is a great weekend spot! The patio is dog friendly and they loved our pup!
google avatar

Yelp
The food was delicious love the bacon. Service was good also. Ambiance was nice too parking wasn't great. You have to pay to park closer

Justin W.

Yelp
I got the cinnamon cream stuffed french toast. It was disappointing. The french toast itself was nice, but the cinnamon was sorely lacking. There was no cinnamon inside. It was 3 sandwiches each with two pieces of french toast and cream cheese in-between.

Lisa G.

Yelp
I called in a order for 3 egg whites with cheese, hash browns, turkey sausage, and rye toast. I called back and asked for strawberry jelly. I didn't get two strawberry jelly's. I got one grape and one strawberry. I also didn't get cheddar on my egg whites, and no sausage. I was very disappointed.

Yelp
My girlfriend took me here for my birthday breakfast, so of course, I had to order the birthday pancakes! It was mentioned that it was my birthday so they put a candle in my pancakes, sang to me, and gave me a free mimosa - it was all a really nice surprise! The pancakes were light, fluffy and delicious. The avocado toast was also really good but huge - 2 pieces of toast, 2 eggs and hashbrowns. The brewed Coffee was also quite good, which is important to me at a breakfast spot. The service was fantastic and the restaurant itself was very clean and had a great vibe. I highly recommend a visit.

Yelp
POOR SERVICE. The place literally had 8-10 people was all so it was not busy. When we finally ordered our food only partial came out and after 5 minutes of waiting for the rest we had to yell for our server to look into what happened We have been here maybe 4 times and it's 50/50. Not sure we will be back

Yelp
This is one of my go-to breakfast places in Chicago! They have a huge menu that anyone in your group could find something to their liking, plus tons of great beverage options that include boozy brunch if you're into that! I'm a huge fan of their iced Irish coffee and my group always gets the mimosa pitcher to split which is really affordable for the area. Service has always been outstanding, the people who work here seem to really enjoy it. It can get quite loud during peak hours, almost hard to hear across the table. Highly recommend this joint!

Maxi P.

Yelp
I used to love Pancake Cafe circa 2021/22 but the last few times I've been there in the last year or so I have been less than impressed. More often than not the staff has been very dismissive which comes off as rude. You feel like you're being rushed out of there. I especially get this feeling when I ask for something to be gluten free(which they advertise they can do!!!) Don't get me wrong, I am appreciative that they even offer gluten free options since I have celiac disease. However, you're going to pay an extra $5 for gluten free food that is just mediocre. They up charge did not used to be $5. Asking people to pay a an extra $5 for something they can't even help most of the time..especially for food and service that is far far from perfect, it just doesn't sit right with me. They also misprinted the menu recently saying they could make crepes gluten free when they could not. I will now be going to the iHop across the street.

Yelp
Came here with my friends not too long ago because we wanted to go to a brunch place near our friend's house, and it was very good. The ingredients all seemed fresh and everything was flavorful. The menu is quite extensive and includes eggs, breakfast burritos, salads, sandwiches, pancakes, french toast, waffles, and so much more. You can even do a la carte and try a little bit of everything so you can pick and choose the quantity of anything you want instead of needing to have all of the same thing in your meal. This place is better than many other chain restaurants. I ordered the croissant breakfast sandwich with breakfast potatoes instead of hashbrowns, and everything was wonderful. The bacon was crispy, the croissant was fluffy, and the cheese was perfectly melted on the sandwich. I also ordered a mimosa and a coffee. My friends all really enjoyed their meals, as well, and we had a personable waiter who always checked up on us. The only thing was that my friend had a hair in her omelette, but she cut that part off of her food and then just ate the rest. I would love to come here again soon to try something new out of their many options.

Yelp
The staff here was super nice! I got California eggs Benedict and cinnamon stuffed French toast. Both foods were kind of bland, they weren't bad they just weren't that great or flavorful
google avatar

Aaron Paul W.

Yelp
The food here was good--pretty standard. I had the two egg combo with bacon and my partner had the biscuits and gravy. I asked for extra crispy hash browns and they came out like potato chips, which I enjoyed! Reminded me of the shredded potato chips I used to get in a Can when I was a kid. One issue we had with the food was they put out my plate and my partners plate took about an extra 10 mins to come out. By the time his food arrived, most of mine was gone (I waited for about 5 minutes but then things were getting cold). I think they were waiting on the biscuits, but I was really surprised they sent my food out when his wasn't ready. The service was okay and the place was very busy. We also had a Bloody Mary, which was actually the best thing out of everything we had. The meal was pretty pricey for what it was. I agree with the reviews here and would rate this place 3.2-3.4 stars. The place wasn't bad--just nothing extraordinary either. Happy eating! Pro-tip: request a table outside of the weather permits!

Yelp
This is actually the first review I ever make My friends and I were visiting from Los Angeles and we decided to visit Pancake Cafe our first day. Called ahead to ask if they'd be able to accommodate a party of 13 in the patio, they said yes, and asked for time of arrival. When we got there, they said we'd have to wait. Granted, I had a big party and technically it wasn't a reservation, so pass. We got split up, 6 of us sat in one table and 7 at another. Long story short, my friends sitting at other table got greeted by server, got their drinks, got their food order in, meanwhile, my table hadn't been greeted, AT ALL. I myself work in the restaurant industry and tried to be the most patient, but, I was patient until I wasn't. Got up and spoke to the host asking where our server was. In less than a minute, someone came. We ordered Mimosas pitchers, and shots first and then we ordered our food. By that time, my friends at the other table had just gotten their food. 20-25 minutes pass by, we have our food, but not our shots and cup of coffee we had ordered, as well as a a couple of side dishes. The server that brought out the forgotten side dishes, was rudely asking what else we were missing, with attitude. In that circumstance, you'd expect them to be nice and hospitable after horrible service. By then, our friends were done eating. No manager came to speak to us, to apologize... nothing. Safe to say, when I come back to Chicago, I won't be going back to Pancake Cafe.

Yelp
Great place for brunch right near Wrigley Field. I got the Omelette and Banana Nut Pancakes and they were amazing! Every bite taken was flavorful and amazing!

Yelp
The Pancake Cafe provided a mostly positive experience. One thing I really appreciated right off the batt was the diversity represented in their employees, it really felt like a welcoming and super inclusive establishment open to all since they are willing to hire all! My buddy and I sat at the bar to avoid having to wait for a table and the bartender that helped us was so nice and efficient! They were busy and she was hustling while still providing friendly and positive service. I was so conflicted on what to order but since I'm from out of town, I decided to order the Chicago Italian Beef Sandwich and was not disappointed. The beef portion was generous and the bread they used was delicious and worth consuming all of those carbs! I was a tad hungover and decided to order a michilada to help me out with that. It was ok. I wasn't the biggest fan of their michilada/Bloody Mary mix but it definitely did the job in making me feel better. I went a second time and had their corned beef and hash and eggs, which was delicious. Loved the carbs in the form of hash brown potatoes and pancakes. And I love it when I order my eggs over easy and they actually come out that way! The only negative I experienced was observing the manager/owner speaking down to employees. He approached my bartender about "working too fast" and told them to slow down. I made it a point to let the bartender know that I appreciated their pace and hustle. This person also approached my bartender and another employee about some other issue but did so in a berating and disrespectful manner. It legit made me feel uncomfortable. The employees laughed it off for the most part. I'm sure this leader was was stressed but sorry, you have to speak to employees and coworkers in a more respectful manner and especially avoid talking down employees in front of patrons. I will support this establishment again but hopefully wont have to witness this individual's condescension again.

Yelp
Loved this place. Great food and service. The bacon is thick is delicious. Not a long wait. Outside seating is offered on those nice Chicago days.
google avatar

Randy L.

Yelp
If you are in town for a Cubs game have breakfast-brunch here first. The French Toast was the best ever along with the corn beef hash & eggs. The best part was sitting at the bar (long wait for table) and watched the bartender rock the place with a smile the whole time:

Jack C.

Yelp
This place is a Lakeview East institution. Consistent, fresh and prompt. Fantastic place for locals and tourists in the area. Customer service could not be better. They are attentive, kind and flexible if you have specific needs. If you can't make it inside to dine, take out never misses. Pancake Cafe is irreplaceable, and will keep you coming back! Keep up the great work.

Yelp
Very cute and popping breakfast place in the cutest spot in Chicago. Portions were reasonable and food came out perfectly tasteful. I loved our waiter and would come back again!

Mary Anne S.

Yelp
Delicious! We were a party of 8 on a Saturday morning. We received excellent service and the food was plentiful. Everyone walked away very happy. Get there early or expect to wait. We had a little bit of everything, omelets, pancakes, crepes, bagel and lox and a skillet. Highly recommend everything!!
google avatar

Kate M.

Yelp
I visited my friend in Chicago and she suggested the Pancake Cafe for for breakfast as a local and yummy spot. It was delicious! We were seated pretty quickly, even though it was a Saturday morning, which was awesome. There's a good amount of seating but I imagine there must be a wait at some times. I ordered the banana lover's french toast with a side of bacon. There were lots of different options to choose from but I was craving something sweet. Highly recommend!
google avatar

Marcy C.

Yelp
Love the gluten free banana pecan pancakes. Service is great and I love sitting outside.

Jason L.

Yelp
Visiting Chicago for a few days and found this gem of a breakfast restaurant. Excellent food, incredible portion's, great polite service, very nice atmosphere, very clean restroom. highly recommend if you are in this part of Chicago!!!
google avatar

EliZabeth C.

Yelp
This restaurant is decrepit and filthy. The cups had lipstick in the rim, the silverware had crusted food. The staff can not remember to bring anything that w I have given this place more than one chance, prevailing to be worse than a port-a-potty
google avatar

Paul C.

Yelp
The restaurant is clean and staff friendly. The food wasn't bad- typical American breakfast fare and somewhat bland. We ordered an omelette and breakfast quesadilla so the pancakes may be better. Four stars- there's nothing wrong with the place but not outstanding.
google avatar

Charlie W.

Yelp
Without a doubt this is where you need to eat brunch! You will never be disappointed. The food is exceptional and the service is too notch. Highly recommend!

Diana D.

Yelp
I used to like this place. We went for breakfast this morning. Prices went up. A LOT!!! $50 before the tip for pancakes with a side of sausage, eggs with hash browns and sausage, and two cups of coffee. Nothing extravagant and nothing off the menu. Outrageously high prices. Next time I'll go across the street to IHOP.

DeAndre R.

Yelp
Sad they took my favorite item off the menu please bring back Eggs & Steak! I love the service and the ambiance! Definitely my local breakfast place but favorite that I always bring family and friends to! Bring back eggs and steak for the 5 star!

Denice L.

Yelp
Delicious! Great atmosphere! Fantastic service ! Outside seating with shade of trees. Mimosas outside with great food. Don't miss this place.

Steff M.

Yelp
I was staying in Lakeview area near Wrigley, and wanted find somewhere I could walk to. Pancake café poped up on my search. Great Spot, wait was reasonable 30 mins they were busy. Something happens to the pos and none orders printed but they quickly figured it out. My foods was good, mojito well made servers were friendly and a vibe. Only regret I should've gotten pancakes, but corned beef hash is my favorite breakfast
google avatar

Ara L.

Yelp
Continued poor service. Went with a friend. Ordered the omelette that said you can choose three cheeses. But The waiter wanted to charge for two of the cheeses even though it's a three cheese omelette. I even asked the hostess if it's a three cheese omelette and she said yes but the waiter insisted on charging for two of the three cheeses. It made no sense. The waiter refused to follow their own menu. Reminded me why I stopped going here a while ago. Figured things might have improved (last year it took an hour to get our food and they had the audacity to want to then charge us before even bringing the food, and this, after making us wait an hour. Versus apologizing for taking an hour to bring out breakfast). Poor service when the waiter can't follow his own restaurant's menu for something as basic as a three cheese omelette. It's even Poorer service when you tell the hostess/manager who don't do anything about it either. An unnecessary challenge to just order food. Unlikely going back.

Jane D.

Yelp
Paid $13 for the turkey melt to include 3 slices of thin packaged deli meat. Also was not a melt at all, it was cold
google avatar

Idalis S.

Yelp
Great local spot to grab breakfast in the neighborhood. The service was swift and friendly the food was good but the chorizo skillet definitely could have used more chorizo and less potatoes. Overall, it's nothing special but I'd recommend for a low-key, cheap breakfast.
google avatar

Natalie M.

Yelp
Came here on a Thursday morning. Ordered the Eggs with thick sliced bacon and an Irish coffee. This plays is legit and I have no complaints. I walk passed this place all the time and I don't know why I've never come here before. I'll be back soon to try their pancakes
google avatar

Juanita N.

Yelp
Since we were in the area we decided to Enjoy our Easter Breakfast at this restaurant and we were greatly pleased. All of our meals were delicious and reasonable pricing. The Mimosas were not that great but drinkable. I would recommend to our friends and would return. The service as Great
