Pancheros Mexican Grill - Review - Chicago - The Infatuation

"We think Pancheros has good burritos. We can’t be sure because things are always a little hazy when we’re there. Good burritos though. We think. We haven’t been here yet, but want you to know this spot exists." - Team Infatuation

Got a chance to stop by Pancheros, and I did not regret it. I had the tacos, one steak and one chicken, and saw them press the bread right in front of me. On top of the bread, the ingredients were top quality. The price was also pretty good, $6.95 for two tacos with lots of meat and toppings was a good deal. Staff were patient as I decided on what to order. Highly recommended!

Google
The food is mediocre that’s for sure. Pricing isn’t bad, on the cheaper side. However the process of employees making it was really painful to watch. They aren’t very clean when making the food, they are just kind of going through the motions, and they weren’t very friendly at all. I understand food service can become mundane, especially at later times in the day, but to keep good reviews, customer service, and business, employees must be friendly & management might want to check on food safety skills. I wouldn’t come back per se.

Google
Great value, similar to other Mexican fast casual restaurants - burrito bowls, tacos, quesadillas. Tried veggie bowl - rice, beans, veggies, queso,- good quality & value for money in a college town.

Google
Would you like any meat with your sour cream? First of all I ordered two crunchy tacos and got these pathetic freezing cold soft tacos with a tablespoon of meat versus a half a cup of sour cream that was on them! Of course that made them freezing cold and it was just disgusting!

Google
The food was so good me and my family love going there and all of the workers are always very kind, it's a must try.

I just love the staff employed here. I can easily say that it’s hard to leave without a smile on my face when I get food here. I’ve had a the distinct pleasure of meeting amazing people like Andrew who was helpful and attentive, JJ was very sweet, the girl who prepped my food was quick respectful and very kind, and they’ve all been very polite making the experience absolutely wonderful. It’s always a lovely experience and a pleasure when I walk in. Thank you all for your hard work 💕

I'm so glad that they are open till 2:00 a.m. this place is a godsend even though every single time I go here. I am praying to the porcelain gods shortly afterwards. It's definitely not food poisoning but it's probably close. Love it 💕💕💕

Google
Not the best service but I like that it's open late into the night 🌃 Perfect for a late night munch. Pretty solid and not too expensive - good value.

Yelp
I had a disappointing first visit here. Left 2 stars. Coming back 5 years later and I feel my review needs to be updated. 3 stars. Cordial service and average tasting and proportioned food. Average Mexican chain restaurant. Don't get too excited for it but it is acceptable. Best, Luke, a 25 yr old man.

Yelp
Horrific experience. While Horrific experience. While at the Ann Arbor art fair, wife and I were both getting hangry. In addition I had to use the bathroom. happened upon pancheros and thought we could kill two birds with one stone. I took one step into the men's room and found myself at the gates of hell. The condition of the bathroom was disgusting. There's a full load in the toilet. Just imagine your worst images that you can think up in your head and what was actually there is probably worse. Now, maybe I should give the staff the benefit of the doubt and say they didn't know what was going on in there, but that is a red flag about the rest of the restaurant. Needless to say, we skipped out of there quickly and won't be back.
google avatar

Craig Z.

Yelp
Very tasty burrito. Reasonable price. And solid service. Pains me to take off a star, but there is a very specific reason why: neither of the bathrooms had hand soap. That is pretty gross. I'd like to think the staff is going to the bathroom and washing their hands elsewhere, but still an issue. Also, guy was a little rude and certainly unapologetic when I brought it to his attention. Here are the positive though: -as someone else rightly pointed out, mixing the ingredients is a huge value add, really improved the burrito -similarly, they made a fresh tortilla, right there, when I ordered. Yum. -I had tofu, and it worked surprisingly well...no compromise on flavor, less guilt! Based on this experience I will definitely keep an eye out for more Pancheros.

Yelp
Pancheros is always a great place to get reasonably priced fast food. In my own experience, sometimes the dishes are made quite rushed and too much sauce is added- often drowning out the flavor or the other ingredients, however, this is fixable by asking for less sauce! The shrimp is FANTASTICALLY seasoned. Big fan!

Yelp
I absolutely love love love this panch. They are so nice and they fill you up good they don't play. Love everyone there, great vibes. The verde salsa and queso combo is gas.

Yelp
I Patronized this location twice and on both occasions the floor was dirty as well as the tables. It did not inspire a clean environment.

Njema M.

Yelp
The food is actually terrible no flavor and the beans were spoiled. The man who claimed to be the owner, Olando after hitting on me could not understand the order and it was wrong and he overcharged us. The tables and floors were filthy. Thus place should be closed down immediately . It's a public health risk.

Lindsay H.

Yelp
Burrito too big. Too much rice, not enough chicken. Burrito fell apart... oh no! Chipotle better. Fire music tho.
google avatar

Jessica Z.

Yelp
My friend and I came to try and complete a challenge, which was to eat a whole burrito in under two minutes. Because we finished it so fast, taste wasn't really in our minds, but eating Pancheros normally isn't on my top to-do list. I think it's good for a quick meal if you're in a rush, but after awhile, the food is pretty difficult to eat because it is really heavy and the flavors start becoming boring. I do like their queso and that they mix their ingredients for you. If you're used to Chipotle, I don't recommend getting their burrito bowls, and if you're getting a burrito, make sure to douse it in the queso.
google avatar

David G.

Yelp
It's the wish version of Chipotle. Don't waste your time and money. It's not even much cheaper. Gross food

Timothy

Yelp
The food was alright but the worker was a douche. The place was dirty and the workers were loud and annoying.

Yelp
Sometimes I would like to invite the owner of an establishment to sit down and eat the food that I am delivered. This is one of those instances... I ordered (view receipt): 1x Burrito Bowl Pinto Beans, Cilantro Lime Rice, Sauteed Veggies, Cheese, Steak 1x Tacos (2) Carnitas, Sour Cream, Cheese, Lettuce It doesn't say it on here, but I ordered CRUNCHY Tacos. Instead I got these pathetic excuses for what should be human consumption. The tortillas were thin and paper like, There was about a teaspoon or even a tablespoon of meat versus the half a cup of sour cream that was thrown on there. The cheese looked like somebody accidentally dropped a little bit of cheese that was in a full hand while crossing over it. The best thing I can say about the tacos I ordered is "Thank God that there was so much sour cream because I wouldn't of had anything to put on my dry ass burrito bowl!" The Dasher was kind enough to put my food on top of my cold water bottles that are outside after she had tipped everything over to one side in her car apparently. When you order delivery, there shouldn't be a reason that you would have to warm your food back up! I gave my cat a piece of the steak that was in this "bowl" and it took him about 30 seconds just to chew and swallow! There were two pieces of red bell pepper when it was supposed to be sautéed vegetableS, they were crunchy. I didn't mind that because I like raw peppers too, thank God. At the end I am left with dry rice and steak that could be used as some sort of device for kids with oral fixation's. I've renamed the bits of steak, they are now called "MEXICAN GOBSTOPPERS"! Don't waste your time or money.Burrito BowlTacos

Yelp
The line is so clean and the food is Amazing !! I got a Steak quesadilla! Kita and Joy 's service is super nice

Yasmyn I.

Yelp
food was great until...i found a hair!!! the burrito was a reasonable price but due to the delivery fee i payed a total of about $24 i was starving so no amount of money really fazed/upset me... until i saw this, i've called and also written 2 reviews to display my discomfort but NO ONE has cared to apologize for this disturbance nor refund my money!!! i'm outraged and disgusted to have to pull out a 2foot long piece of hair out of some food i was dying to eat! now i will say i'm so glad i cut it in half first because as you can see i was crushing that burrito down! i wouldn't have known what to do if i are the whole thing!!! pancheros is top 10 on a list of places i'd never order from again due to disrespectful customer service/ behaviors and horrible care for their workspace/customers consuming their CONTAMINATED food!!!!!
google avatar

Hanine C.

Yelp
The cooking area is really dirty and employees don't seem to care. It made me question the cleanliness of the food. I've been a few times due to it being what's open late (love that) and always choose the protein that looks the least dry because it often looks like it's been sitting out for a while. The onions in the fajita veggies are never cooked enough and are pungent and raw crisp. But I go back because of the late hours.
google avatar

Kim M.

Yelp
Yo - take it from a girl from the east coast. Pancheros burritos beats Chipotle by a mile. The key? They MIX YOUR INGREDIENTS together prior to wrapping it up in that tortilla. This is what makes Pancheros better than other fast casual chains. Also I dig their hot sauces. The spiciest one is a very smoky chipotle flavor.
google avatar

Amaya F.

Yelp
Really sad to see the quality of Pancheros diminish over the year but the prices to rise. Over the summer the Queso was consistently Cold and nearly SOLID. I gave them slack. Now, the $3.50 they charge for chips and queso, they decide to give HALF of the chips they used to. I'm sad to see this happen because quality quick food in Ann Arbor downtown is sparse and this is sickening to see. So disappointed with a place I loved and wrote a beautiful essay about last school year. Bring back quality pancheros :( two stars because at least the queso was liquid today.

Yelp
Pancheros is my go-to lunch spot on campus. They are located pretty centrally and it is always easy to get in and out quick. The food is pretty good quality and they have a variety of selections. I like how they hand press the tortillas for the burritos and it goes a long way for the taste and texture in my opinion. All the meats are usually seasoned pretty nicely and the fajita peppers are always great. The salsas are all pretty good and they offer diced jalapenos if you are looking for an extra kick. Another thing that is unique to Pancheros is the fact that they mix all the ingredients before they wrap your burrito to make sure you get a little bit of everything in every bite. Overall they have tasty food with good value, it is nothing crazy but if you ever need a quick bite be sure to check them out.
google avatar

Amy C.

Yelp
Sometimes you want good food and sometimes you just need something to fill your stomach. Panch does a great job of filling the latter role at an affordable price. Service is always super fast, making Panchero's a convenient stop on the way to/back from class or a great late night meal. Quality isn't great but let's face it, if you're paying $7 for a huge amount of food, you shouldn't be expecting anything gourmet. One nice touch, though, is how they have hand-made tortillas instead of using packaged ones found everywhere else. As a fast-casual restaurant, Panchero's is clean, efficient, and everything a fast-casual restaurant needs to be.

Yelp
So here's the thing: In my eyes, giving this place 3-stars is too much, but giving them 2-stars is not enough. I rounded down because I just left and am a bit unsatisfied. I would compare this place to the other burrito chain giants that I know, Chipotle and Qdoba. In terms of taste, I'd say it's on par with Chipotle, but not as good as Qdoba. Where I'm a little annoyed is the size portions. The first time I ate here, I got a bowl. I'm a large man who works out a lot. Getting a bowl for lunch was incredibly disappointing considering how small it was. I could have eaten 3. No matter. I'm going to start getting the burrito, extra meat. I've gone 4 times since the bowl incident. The second time, I got a super small burrito. It confused me. I waved it off as some sort of mistake. However, as I sit here still hungry after eating another super skinny burrito, I'm a bit upset. At least Chipotle and Qdoba consistently give you fat burritos, as it should be. If I'm in a burrito mood, I think next time I'll make the trek to State Street for Chipotle.

Yelp
Had a promo thing for a $1 burrito that said it was valid until the 15th of September, it was the 12th of September when I ordered, they told me they won't take it or do anything for me, they also refused to take a walk in order saying they would only take online orders, once I put in an online order I had to set it for a later time since they were experiencing a "high volume of orders" (the place was almost empty), after having to wait for my order that I put in online they messed up my order (I had double meat and queso which I got neither of) seems like no one here has a clue what is going on and the food is mediocre at best. Just go to chipotle or qdoba and save yourself the time and money.
google avatar

Armani T.

Yelp
I am totally disgusted by the way I was treated in this establishment. I flew here early enough to get an order placed just to be told that I can't be served.

Connor M.

Yelp
Paid for double meat.. might as well been vegetarian. Half the size of qdoba / chipotle. $15 burrito delivered . Inflation I guess...
google avatar

Geri G.

Yelp
Walked into this restaurant less than an hour ago only to have the entire food line talk rudely in Spanish about my daughter and I. They obviously don't know that Spanish is America's second language... we understood it all. When I asked to speak to the manager, to my surprise she was standing right there... she said nobody was talking about us, she then switched her story and said that they didn't direct their comments towards us. They called us "white" girls and made other racial remarks... I am in disbelief that all these women that could barely speak English were making racial remarks about my 14 year old daughter and myself and all the manager could say was that they were not directed toward us. The manager then told me to file a complaint on line, so here it is for all to read!

Alex B.

Yelp
The food is pretty good. I honestly prefer panch to chipotle or qdoba and the queso is elite. I honestly love panch and their late hours. Y'all are elite!!
google avatar

Sandy E.

Yelp
Panchero's is the best burrito joint around! The most flavorful tortilla, biggest burrito, best bowl. When my partner and I ate in post-covid we were pleased with the social distancing measures in the dining room, the requirement for guests and staff to wear masks and the plexiglass protecting the workers from droplets from us. When I ordered curbside, the staff were prompt and helpful. A must-go during summer when south university is less busy because fewer college students are in town!

Rick S.

Yelp
Pancheros is very convenient because not only is it open until very late(2 am), but they also get you your food very quickly. However, I am definitely not getting what I am paying for. I've ordered here quite a few times just to pay full price for maybe half a bowls worth of food. I have a picture of my last online order barely filling half the bowl. Overall, good mexican fast food just very conservative with how much they give you.
google avatar

Amber P.

Yelp
I may be biased but chipotle and q-doba can't compete with Pancheros in Ann Arbor! Student discounts and burritos filled to the brim make this the best late night snack, study break spot, or that go to place after you've had too much to drink. Staff here are great and will hook your meal up, it's ready fast and conveniently right down town!
google avatar

Jun Ha P.

Yelp
I come here pretty often, but their service just varies too much. Sometimes it's more than enough (in which case I don't complain about) but usually it's not even close to enough. It is cheaper than chipotle and tastes better in my opinion, but this location is jus ehh at its best. Two scoops of carnitas are basically two "half" scoops. Like, come on give me two full scoops
google avatar

Yonit R.

Yelp
My favorite burrito in AA! Its super quick, convenient, and open till late. Their tortillas are 10/10, so definitely get the burrito and not the bowl. As a vegetarian, I highly recommend the tofu! I wish they would give a little more food, just so that I get what i'm paying for, but its really good! They're also pretty good about covid 19, social distancing, and mask wearing. A good quick lunch :)
google avatar

Jessica W.

Yelp
Personally I think that I prefer them over Chipotle or Qdoba, the tortilla was freshly made and has a lot of flavor. They were fast and efficient which is excellent for the lunch crowd, I left spending just under $10 for a burrito and drink. The chicken was well flavored, my one complaint was that some grains in the rice were hard to bite into and I was a little scared to chip a tooth. I noticed that even at their peak busy time the staff was around cleaning up the seating area and booth, also there seemed to be plenty of seating from what I could tell.
google avatar

Yelp
Blech. My mom and I stopped in here for a quick bite one evening and it was the most depressing meal I've had in quite sometime. I went with a steak quesadilla and chips and queso and she went with a steak burrito. My quesadilla was lukewarm at best and lacked any flavor. Luckily the salsa had a bit of a kick to it but the meat itself was bland and the cheese was slightly rubbery since it wasn't hot and melty. The tortilla, which they prepare in house, was actually pretty decent but that's all it really had going for it. The chips were blue corn which was a nice surprise but they were stale. The queso was decent. It had a bit of spice which I was not expecting and it was pretty much the only thing I finished on my tray, despite the staleness of the chips. My mom got a burrito and barely finished half. She was not impressed. We also ordered an iced tea and they didn't have ice so basically it was lukewarm tea. Again, not very appealing. Together our meal ended up $20 and most of it ended up uneaten on our trays. Total bust. The staff was nice enough and the place was clean. Also they're open until 2am during the week and 4am during the weekend which is good for the post bar college crowd. Although if it's that late and I'm hungry I'll opt for a Taco Bell drive thru. I actually like them better.
google avatar

Justin C.

Yelp
If you were to just eat the tortilla at Chipotle or Moe's or any other Mexican chain, you would not enjoy it. When you eat just the tortilla at Panchero's, you will love it. Make a burrito or quesadilla with it and it's amazing. And I love the fact that they mix all the ingredients before wrapping the burrito. I wish all places would do this. Prices are fair. The only reason I give it 4 stars vs. 5 stars is the service isn't the greatest. The employees clearly don't care about making a great and neat food product. I understand they probably make 39439 burritos a day, but a 5-star establishment would always put care into every product they serve to its customers.
google avatar

Santiago P.

Yelp
Always very good burritos here... the blue corn chips are tooooo good, the go perfect with the burrito. I love how they get a good mix on the ingredients.
google avatar

Nick M.

Yelp
They took safety to the next level but I thought my bowl was a kids portion. Nice flavor just extremely sorry portions. I will not go again, I'll stick to chipotle and Qdoba.
google avatar

Jason C.

Yelp
Burritos for $5.95 on campus? Surprisingly, I was taken back by the price... I'd expect the price to be around $7 or so, but price along will get folks into the door. Of all the years that I lived in Ann Arbor, this was my first time trying out the place - don't ask me why it took me so long... anyways... I got the Carnitas burrito with everything... I also ordered the chips and queso. They serve blue corn tortilla chips, which sets this place apart from the rest of fast food Mexican places... as for queso, it was too watery... it should have been more thicker, but it tasted good... just make them thicker please. Burrito was good... compare to Qdoba, Chipolte, etc, the taste level is about the same... however, I'll place Panchero's higher on the list because they make fresh flour tortillas when they make tacos or burritos... this sets them apart from the rest. They are open late, so if you have craving for Mexican food and you are on/around campus, swing on by.
google avatar

Beck E.

Yelp
Their burritos are better than the ones you get down the block at BTB. But they are more expensive. But the tortillas are fresher. I've never regretted going here.
google avatar

Vee L.

Yelp
Substandard food and even more substandard service. Disengaged employees who kept yelling "NEXT" while I was trying to look at the menu - I'd never been there before. Mind you, the store was empty so that wasn't really necessary... small portions, penny picks for things like extra cheese etc. SO finished his bowl in 2 minutes... literally Bottom line: save your time and go to Chipotle
google avatar

Coleton D.

Yelp
I'd probably avoid this restaurant if I were you! Ordered a quesadilla before my exam, and I was more than disappointed. Quesadilla comes with ONLY cheese and one meat. And saying meat is a stretch- they take a spoon and put one scoop onto the quesadilla. I counted and there were a total of 8 pieces of chicken on the entire quesadilla. At about $6, I ate the whole thing in less than one minute. Guacamole and queso are an upcharge. Almost asked for a refund when I saw that it was only cheese with 8 pieces of chicken and no other toppings. Could of made it better myself for less than a dollar. The only reason I can see to come here is perhaps for a burrito. Compared to the quesadilla I get from Qdoba, this weighted about 20% of the portion from Qdoba. Although convenient, will definitely not return based on how much of a rip off it is in terms of portion. Seems weird that they're not ashamed to serve a quesadilla with 8 cuts of chicken. Basically paid for cheese and bread unfortunately.

Yelp
I'm a sucker for new innovative local chains that can beat Chipotle (yes, I love it along with the rest of the world, but am so sick that at every location the line is out the door, do they put crack in their burritos, either way I refuse to eat there anymore, great or not) Pancheros has the same set up, but what makes the first world of a dfference is they make your taco or burrito shell to order. You watche them fluff and spread the ball of dough and its done seconds later and well worth it, best burrito shell I've ever had, simple, fast and easy, every mexican place should do this! I went with the salad, all of their fixings and grilled veggies! Let me tell you that was alot of joy in that bowl and my belly, everything was so fresh, my taste buds were very excited and satisfied! My husband got the carnitas and the steak burritos, both were huge, and I mean huge, so big he had to give me half (what a shame...) and that is very unusual for him. My son had the tacos with chicken and by far, the carnitas burrito is the way to go! Prices are great, the guys working as well, and the location is clean and inviting, wish they had one of these in Columbus!
google avatar

Hannah R.

Yelp
Cheap, Chipotle-style mexican food. I dig it :) Been a couple times since I've moved to A2, and I have to say I really enjoy it. The tortillas are super fresh (you watch them make it) and the ingredients are basically Chipotle's (though I like this place's salsa more). I'll go back, for sure.

Brooke H.

Yelp
Pancheros has normally been there for me when I need them the most: a late night snack. However, after a months-long hiatus, I wanted some chips and salsa after a particularly trying day. I waited in line and ordered my chips and salsa only to be told, "were not doing chips and salsa tonight." Now I'm not sure what kind of Mexican restaurant just chooses not to "do" chips and salsa, but they definitely gave the man 2 people ahead of me in line some. Disappointed and surprised; no longer my late-night snack of choice.
google avatar

Inara I.

Yelp
Great late night post bar food. I don't see myself going here under any other circumstances. But everything has its niche and Panch fills its well! The chips and queso make the trip here worth it- amazing queso and much closer than any Qdoba. The quesadillas are plain but really good and definitely hit the spot. The employees are funny and super sweet. If you've had any other kind of experience with them here, keep in mind they deal with drunk college kids until 4am, so not sure I'd be any more cheery...
google avatar

Jeff B.

Yelp
This place has gone from mediocre, yet strangely tolerable, to simply bad. Because of the abhorrent hygiene and food safety standards of this place, I strongly urge you to steer clear. This is your standard burrito, burrito bowl, and other assorted "Mexican" food places. What's unique about Panchero's is that unlike BTB or Qdoba, no attempt at all is made at distinguishing it from Chipotle other than two things: 1. Liquid cheese sauce is available 2. At the end of the line they mix your bowl together using red spoons on disposable papers and then they dump it back in your bowl. If you've ever had the situation at Chipotle where mixing your bowl ingredients together gets lettuce on the table, you know why premixing is such a genius idea. Unfortunately, the last time I went, I ordered a bowl. Not only did the clerk not offer to mix the bowl. When I insisted that they do it (the *one* thing that makes this place unique for what I order) he takes a used spoon, and mixes straight up on the counter. .......... No. In no world would this make sense. Stay away if you know what's good for you. Go to BTB instead.

Leslie R.

Yelp
im so drunk rn and pqncheros fill me up butbim so drunk imma pukkk trig. 10/10 recommend. when u drunk. def not when h sober. love hall !!!
google avatar

Murali V.

Yelp
The customer service is what defines this establishment. As a first time visitor, I initially expected a Qdoba/Chipotle ripoff, but found the food quality to be much higher, and complemented by the friendly atmosphere. The lady who made my burrito bowl was funny, kind, and generous with toppings, all of which kept me smiling. My one recommendation is that you come here having skipped either breakfast or lunch; the portion size is HUGE and the prices are steeper as a result. Overall, the best Mexican food I have ever had.
google avatar

Yelp
Panchero's greater than Chipotle That is a controversial start to a review I admit- gotta get those clicks baby. What's that? Clicks are totally irrelevant on yelp because you don't get paid? What? Damnit.... But serially, Chipotle is stubborn and despite the constant demands from the 99% for queso they refuse to have any. If they want to shoot themselves in the foot like that I guess its their prerogative, but sorry Bobby I will be taking my business elsewhere. Enter Panchero's. Its your classic burrito place- you tell them what to put in the burrito, they make the burrito, you eat the burrito. No fuss no muss. I would say the quality of the meat is a little better than chipotle, the quality of the veggies a little lower.. but you don't make friends with salad. Get queso in the burrito, on the side with chips ( I will say the chips are often kind of stale :( ), in your drink- everywhere. They also have mellow yellow on tap which is pretty key.

Yelp
Can't stop won't stop raving about this freshly-pressed-out-of-round-dough tortilla because it's unmatched at any other fast-Mexican place. Panch deserves an extra star for the tortilla alone. -Don't make the mistake here of ordering the bowl to be healthy, as the rice and beans alone aren't anything special- The quesadillas are decent too! Just know you won't be able to add any extras besides the meat and cheese like you would in a burrito. Open late til 4am and takes in the late night college crowd with open arms and cheery service! Can't ask for anything else from a south u staple.

This restaurant treats me so well and any friends of mine who don't like this establishment are not currently my actual friends. Thank you for treating me so well at any time of the day.
