Where to Eat Magnificent Mexican Food in New Orleans

"Cozy, authentic, homemade — that about sums up Panchita’s Mexican Restaurant on Carrollton Uptown, just steps from Lebanon’s Cafe. This family-friendly homey spot offers Veracruz-style specialties marked by fresh tomato sauce with olives and capers, without the heat of chiles. Try the al pastor and asada tacos, anything with mole, and a sno-ball or popsicle palate cleanser. Great prices." - Clair Lorell

Google
First, I'd like to state that Google has the wrong hours for this restaurant. It says that they close at 2:30 p.m. however, they actually close at 8:30 p.m. Tonight was my second time going to this restaurant. It's very clean and quaint. There is Latin music playing in the background. This would be a great place to catch a quick dinner with friends or bring a date if it's someone you've been seeing for a while. Reserver was friendly and informative. She answered all of my questions. The food itself is fantastic. I go on Tuesdays where the tacos are $2 each. Thry havr the best Al Pastor I have ever eaten. It is very Bland at most places, but not here. Absolutely fantastic. Unfortunately, they ran out of it today because it is so popular but I still had a great time and the food was very filling. My check was only $9 for four tacos with chips and salsa. I left a 50% tip. Highly recommend this place. I will definitely be back next Tuesday.

Google
I'm from Chicago where you can find good Mexican food almost anywhere. I was attracted to this place because of the Veracruz in the name. The staff were kind and efficient. The atmosphere was welcoming and clean. The food was disappointing to me. It was Taco Tuesday, so I tried them all. The chorizo and al pastor seemed to be seasoned with cinnamon which I hate in my meat. Chips were good. The salsa lacked spiciness. Definitely not the level of food quality I can find in even a divy, hole in the wall Mexican restaurant in my home town. I'll be back to New Orleans a fourth time, but definitely not back here.

Google
Wasn’t impressed overall. The service was very good, and initial presentation was great; however, the chicken was noticeably rubbery. Every bite of chicken was difficult. The beans were over salted, and the chicken was under seasoned. The complimentary chips and homemade salsa were better than the sizzling fajita plate. Rice was spot on though. Please fix the rubber chicken and seasoning! And turn on some authentic Mexican radio stations.

Google
First, the horchata is real. The taste is so good. The chilaquiles were delicious, and the salsa had a good balance between flavor and spice. Everyone was attentive and food was great. Will come again.

Google
I’ve been coming to this place for years and always enjoyed the food and service—but sadly, that’s no longer the case. Since the new ownership took over, the menu has changed drastically and not for the better. The quality has dropped, options are limited, and even what is on the menu often arrives incomplete. disappointing, but what made it worse was the attitude from the staff when I simply asked about missing items that the menu clearly listed as part of the dish. When a place you used to love turns into something unrecognizable, it’s frustrating. I won’t be coming back, and I can’t recommend it to anyone anymore.

Google
Order was wrong. Mistakes happen. Server replaced the order promptly. Mistaken food was something I could not eat, and my friend asked to take it to go. When she payed, they had added the mistaken items to her bill a la carte (supposedly on managers directive). They did not tell her ahead of time she would be charged for their incorrectly served items. We returned the to go box and they removed the items from her bill. This is completely unacceptable service, and I will not be returning or recommending Panchita to anyone.

Google
Amazing authentic food, great service. Food came out right away. Server gave us samples and was very helpful in helping us decide. Will 100% come back- wish we had food like this in Baton Rouge!

Google
My new favorite place! Service was outstanding, food was fantastic and fresh! Restaurant is clean and the atmosphere is quaint. Birrias tacos where the bomb and the tostada were the best I ever had. Sheer perfection! I will be back.

Yelp
Came for taco Tuesday ($2 or $3 seafood tacos) and had a great experience. The food was delicious we had chicken, barbacoa, chicken, Birria, and shrimp tacos plus elotes. Service was great and friendly!

Yelp
Best birria tacos thus far! On vacation in NOLA and the taco Tuesday was delicious. The best birrrias in the world. Been on the search for the best Birria tacos and they have sur passed the best for me. The tacos were seasoned well and so was the juice. Omg! This was a great experience and packing so much flavor. This is the best go to taco place for Tuesday! Please support this local business they are amazing and deserve your support. Cesar is the best waiter! Super nice, informative and patient!

Yelp
The good: the service is friendly, the prices are low, the margarita was yummy. Chips were warm and both salsas with them were tasty. The bad: the food wasn't that great. Portion size was fine. I had just enough so that I wasn't overfilled and uncomfortable, but there was almost no flavor. I got Birria tacos. I was really disappointed. The didn't have cheese nor were they fried as I was expecting quesabirria to be. The bowl of consumé was really small too and it was hard to dip my tacos in it :( My husband got the flautas and said they were very bland as well. I hate leaving negative reviews for a local business, so I'm willing to give this place another shot! Just going to order something different and hope for the best.

Yelp
Noticed this place while on the St Charles trolley line. I am so glad we decided to come in! The employees were extremely welcoming! The salsas were very flavorful. I ordered the torta de pollo and it was the best torta I've ever had. It was full of flavor! My wife ordered the tostadas de pollo and hers was amazing as well! Give this place a chance, you won't regret it!
google avatar

Jolene G.

Yelp
I had the mole enchiladas as well as birria tacos and pastor tacos. Everything was tasty! We had queso and chips and two rounds of margaritas. We came as a group of ten, both adults and kids, and we didn't want to overwhelm the staff and kitchen. We never felt rushed and the woman who took our order was very accommodating and patient with us. Our food came quickly and hot and she replenished our margaritas on time! It's like she read our minds. This is a great place for taco Tuesday. A very cozy place with the authentic feel. We'll definitely return!
google avatar

Antionette G.

Yelp
Excellent & flavorful Street Tacos! $2 meat tacos on tuesdays! Some of the best ive had. Margarita was good too, not too sweet. The guy who took my order was attentive & a sweetheart. This place should always be packed. We be returning
google avatar

Trever H.

Yelp
Food here is fantastic!! Definitely recommend the a la carte tacos on Tuesday and my wife loves the taquitos!! It's a quiet little gem in the neighborhood, but definitely worth a try. The family vibe from the owners and staff can't be beat.
google avatar

Jennifer F.

Yelp
It was really bad. The enchilada sauce was like water tinted orange. Nothing had any flavor at all. Amy's frozen enchiladas have way more flavor than this food.
google avatar

Malik H.

Yelp
Have been trying to catch a taco Tuesday for the longest. Seen Panchita's on Yelp and didn't think much because I had them before but I didn't really remember how they taste. So we head in and get seated quickly which was great, the waitress knew the menu very well and gave great service. Only gave 4 stars because the chorizo wasn't as hot as I desired. I'm sure I'll be back here soon, the tacos are $2 also! Well the basic ones.

Mafer L.

Yelp
Great delicious food. Well cooked. Food wasn't super greasy and excellent attention. I give 10/10 to this Mexican restaurant.

Lily D.

Yelp
Came here on a Thursday for a quick lunch and it was so efficient. It's got lots of old religious memorabilia and a traditional vibe. Our server was such a queen and checked on us every couple mins. The food was so good probably the best Mexican I've had in Nola. Love love love this place!!
google avatar

Brittany D.

Yelp
Everything was amazing from the service to the food. The birria tacos were the best and the rice and beans were SO good

Yelp
My friends and I came to eat here before episode 4 of Hot D (house of dragons). 3 of us got the enchiladas mole at the recommendation of the waitress as we wanted something spicy. The mole sauce is rather sweet, which we brought up. The waitress said she has never tried it but people told her it is spicy. If you've come here and had the mole sauce and you think it's spicy you should be put to death. It's fucking sweet. The waitress was nice but I flinched every time she made a sudden movement.

Yelp
I really really loved this place! Located conveniently right on St. Charles for anyone who lived uptown and wants a quick, tasty Mexican meal. You seat yourself inside or outside and they're quick to bring you chips and salsa and take your order. They had a green salsa and red salsa. The red was too spicy for me but I loved the green because it tasted so fresh! The food came out in less than 15 minutes. I loved the queso which surprised me because it was yellow and I'm usually a white queso person. I got a chicken burrito and it was huge but so delicious and my husband had shrimp and fish tacos that he loved. The margs were good, big, and pretty strong in our opinion. 2 margs, 2 entrees, and 1 appetizer was $45 which is a very good price for a meal that includes alcohol. All the staff was super nice and attentive and we will definitely be frequenting this place!

Christian V.

Yelp
This is a really good Mexican restaurant!!! The service is top notch and the food is absolutely homemade love!!! A great break for a beer and a taco !!
google avatar

Justin S.

Yelp
Delicious food, friendly staff, will definitely come back again and again! My personal favorite is the enchiladas mole
google avatar

Niko E.

Yelp
Really happy with the food and service we received. The molcajete was loaded and served in a savory salsa, and the freshly made corn tortillas were worth going back for alone!

Shania M.

Yelp
The shrimp was good but the camarones a la diabla are sooo good ! The churros were okay need a little bit more flavor but everything else was perrec
google avatar

Yelp
I was craving Mexican food so I finally decided to chk this place out. Well...i walked in and it immediately felt like authentic. There were a few patrons that appeared to be regulars. The waitress was super sweet and attentive. Their complimentary salsas were fantastic! Tasted really fresh. I chose the sampler plate...loved the beans and rice. The enchilada wasnt very flavorful but everything else was pretty good. Loved that the tv was on Telemundo!

Yelp
I really hate doing this. I like supporting local businesses and I usually don't say anything unless it's nice. BUT this place has left too many bad tastes in my mouth to sit back and not share my experiences. I can safely say that the customer service I received from a takeout order the other day was the worst I've had throughout all of COVID. I simply called in one order and dealt with an incredibly terrible attitude both on the phone and in person from the young server. When I got the food? My order was wrong. And the food was not good. That was the second and last time I will ever eat here. The first time was also unsatisfactory. This is a place with so much potential. But the leadership is obviously not actively involved enough to ensure that the staff is providing quality service and products. You'd think that during a pandemic where money is tight customers would be made to feel greatly appreciated, not like wretched obligations. This is not how a quality business is run. Awful.

Cristina M.

Yelp
The manager went above and beyond to make sure we were taken care of. The prices are different from the website and we were not given a paper menu so that was all we had to reference. She heard our concerns and took off the appropriate amount to make things right. The food was also delicious and I loved the live music. Will be coming back- thank you for the hospitality.

A R.

Yelp
This place is a joke. They are so rude and the food is absolutely diabolical. Their food is simply inedible.
google avatar

Jennifer N.

Yelp
The chips and double salsa was a great start. The chicken nachos were also delicious, with a generous portion of chicken. We ordered a lot of different fishes, including the specials. Everything was well seasoned and the meats were tender and cooked perfectly. My favorite was the trio of tacos. So, when in doubt, you can't go wrong with the tacos. There was a spicy habanero house sauce that topped it off, but it's not for you if you can't handle spice. As for drinks, Micheladas were delicious and paired best with the Bohemia beer as oppose to Corona. Service was good. The waitress was very knowledgeable and friendly. I would highly recommend this place and will return.

Jacob F.

Yelp
This is my go to Mexican place. I go here a couple times a week. It's phenomenal!! No frills just good food and polite service. Never change, PANCHITAS!!!
google avatar

Brittany B.

Yelp
My new favorite Mexican place in nola hands down. Michelada, molcajete, homemade salsas and chips on the table. I'm in love!
google avatar

Louis A.

Yelp
This place is amazing!!! Better than the other Mexican restaurant next to, Chilangos. They serve nothing but AUTHENTIC Mexican food, no Tex-Mex around these parts. I REALLY RECOMMEND EATING AT PANCHITAS, the service is also really just GREAT!!!

Barbara H.

Yelp
Good authentic Mexican food! I love the tacos and flautas especially. Nice people and always a good experience.
google avatar

Nedum A.

Yelp
I'm pretty picky when it comes to tacos (I'm from Chicago which i believe is 3rd to California and Texas when it comes to Mexican food), so I was pleasantly surprised to finally find some good Mexican food in New Orleans. I've been to most of the popular spots in the city like Tacos and Beer, La Carreta, and Felipe's (ew) and this one takes the cake. Authentic tacos, good happy hour deals, and even taco Tuesday specials! The menu is pretty extensive and they offer you chips and salsa while you wait, which is never a bad thing. I had the taco dinner with al pastor and asada -- flavorful and decent sized tacos. I'll definitely be back to try those mole enchiladas

Yelp
I hate to give a review that is not good but I think i need to share my few experiences. The people are rude, I asked for a table, they said that I need to order first and then I can seat, I said ok. Then I order my food to eat in there, after I found my table, they asked if I wanted something to drink while I was waiting, I said yes and order a Mexican Coke, so they brought the drink but didn't even open it not facilitated anything to do it myself, then I went inside the place (I was seating outside) to ask for one, the lady responded meant and send me to find the bottle opener some box full of stuff not related to the restaurant, so I found it and went back to my table. Like 20 minutes later, the same lady brought up my food packed like a to go order! I nicely told the lady, that I wanted to eat there, then she seemed like annoyed and left. So I asked for my check and left. Honestly we need more love and respect for people. We all have things good and bad happening in our life but those things are to share (if we. Want) with people that care. And we cannot treat people bad out of our own frustration. I will try this place again. Giving a 4th Chance.

Yelp
If the word "meh" had a avatar it would be this place. Full disclosure, I am from Southern California, 15 minutes from Mexico so I am EXTREMELY elitist when it comes to Mexican cuisine and generally make it a point not to eat Mexican food anywhere outside of socal Arizona or West Texas and people get irritated with me for that...however I have been let down and underwhelmed EVERY time I allow someone to shame and browbeate into trying Mexican food outside of my designated zones, Pancita is the latest example of that. Sigh...i honestly don't have the inclination or energy to give a in depth break down because it just so...blah...its food...its technically Mexican...its not TERRIBLE...its just there, you knoz what I'm saying, and I it's like they are going through the motions and not even trying? If we are grading on a curve it's probably a WEAK C minus or a strong D plus. It is uninspired, boring, waaaaaaaaaaaaay overpriced and forgettable, the only people I know that like this place honestly don't know any better and that's ok, but those who do wouldnt look twice at this place. Do yourself a favor, save your money and get a different cuisine of food that is more soulful and authentic, try some of the food trucks on Claiborne or some of the ducked off places in Meterie.

Lora S.

Yelp
Great service. Good food. And if you like spice, do yourself a favor and ask for their house-made chile de arbol hot sauce. It is so so so good!!!
google avatar

Ed K.

Yelp
This definitely helped out the morning after a night on Bourbon Street. Enchiladas were very tasty and hit the spot. Add in chips, salsa and a sangria and I was almost back to normal. Another place that the St Charles streetcar rambles by, and is very popular with all the local students. Every city needs one of these places, comfy homemade Mexican food, yummy.
google avatar

Tiff D.

Yelp
After eating at this place sober... I gotta bump it down a bit I got the same plate.. Tilapia Veracruz. This time, the dish was a little overcooked leaving my fish a bit dry and brown and the plantains a sticky ball with crunchy edges. The enchiladas were not good. The sauce was very plain tomato sauce. The homemade tortillas didnt hold up well to the sauce. I'd probably eat here again, but it wouldnt be my first choice.

Yelp
This was a lunch stop with my wife on July 11, 2019 at about 11:30 AM. There was no one else in the restaurant which could have been attributed to the fact that the city was preparing for a Cat 1 hurricane, but then again, who knows. I inquired as to a recommendation and the proprietor recommended the Carne Asada ($13.50) which both my wife and I then ordered. The proprietor brought out some chips and salsa while we waited. The chips were delicate and fresh and not over salted. The delight was in the salsa. She delivered a red & a green. While my wife indulged in the red, my palate was treated to a softly cilantro based green which had a wonderful flavor profile. So good I ordered a second bowl to accompany my lunch plate. The green triangular lunch plates were delivered with the meat hot and the salad cold. It was a simple lettuce salad topped with a half slice of tomato and sprinkled with cheese. The refried beans were presented in a small bowl on the plate and were fresh an hot with a smattering of cheese on top. The guacalmole was obviously fresh and cold but the portion was quite small and didn't go very far for a pricey lunch plate. The rice was scooped by a bowl and placed upside down for a simple presentation. The rice was not as hot as I prefer for a lunch plate. Finally, the meat was plentiful, hot, and slightly seasoned so as not to take away from the character of the dish. I had flour tortillas and my wife had some homemade corn tortillas. The corn tortillas were big, thick, soft, and fresh. While we did not choose to partake in a dessert there was fresh flan available. All-in-all lunch was consistent, well thought out, and served fresh. I thought that $13.50 was a little pricey for luncheon fare because after drinks, taxes, and tip the total came to almost $40.00. For mexican food at lunch. The service is beyond reproach, I loved the green salsa, and yes, I would return. Maybe next time I will try the tacos which I had originally intended to order. Try it out. Not Tex-Mex which I grew up on, but not too bad. Oh, and parking is an issue we parked across the street on South Carrolton. Sorry I forgot to take a picture! Enjoy.

Yelp
You talk about a fall from grace. At one time I loved this spot but since I have been to Taqueria Guerrero this place fails by comparison. I stopped in and had the tacos which was the worst tacos I have ever had in my life. The meat was tasteless, I would have had better tacos from Taco Bell. This was the biggest let down I have seen. Plus on top of that its expensive for what is served. The Tres Leche cake which was one of the reasons why I stopped here was burnt at the bottom and had a charred taste all the way through. I dont think I will be going back here again.

Kylee K.

Yelp
Always down to support local business, but this place was straight trash. I live close by and have been wanting to try it out for awhile since the outside area is so cute. That is legit the only thing the place has going for them. The service was awful. 2 kids running the place on their phone the whole time. Watched the girl greet a table that came after us because she knew them and still never brought us menus for a good minute. The food tasted like it's been sitting in the freezer and then reheated. Was also missing half the items the menu said it came with. Zero flavor and also WAY overpriced. Paid $70 after tip for 2 entrees and 2 margaritas. Which also tasted like straight sour mix and Pepe Lopez Gold. You have 10000% better chance getting better food and service at El Taco Loco up the street. What a waste of a nice location.

Aleks P.

Yelp
My favorite neighborhood restaurant in the city, the food is consistently excellent. The complementary house made chips and salsa are so good it's worth the trip alone. We visit nearly once a week to get our Fajitas and margarita fix.
google avatar

Yelp
THIS IS NOT A CREOLE MEXICAN RESTAURANT! It is just a Mexican restaurant. The front of this place says it's creole and I was here alone exploring. When I asked the young server what made the Mexican food creole she didn't know what to say and just said "it's authentic" ok cool I tried it out and it is in fact authentic but it's Mexican food authentic. Service was ok nothing too outstanding. I'd eat here again but I wish they would take the creole out their title because they def ain't that!

Jaycie M.

Yelp
Delicious! We had the chicken tamales and the chimichangas- VERY FLAVORFUL... We were 10/10 pleased with our meal and the experience! Great salsas too!
google avatar

Kristin C.

Yelp
The cheese dip for the chips is gritty and doesn't taste like anything at all. Most of the food was not seasoned at all, we had to put piles of salt on everything. My steak nachos were covered in the "cheese," so I didn't eat much of that. When we informed the server that the cheese was off, he took it away, talked to some lady (who gave us the stink eye as he was speaking to her) then came back and informed us that the cheese was fine. No, it was not. That's why we told you that it was off. All in all, not a pleasant dining experience.
google avatar

Shannon P.

Yelp
One of my fav Mexican restaurants! Friendly service and the food is always great. I love the authenticity!
google avatar

Samuel M.

Yelp
Other than the abundance of cilantro in the salsas I have not one negative thing to say about this spot. It's quaint and cozy. Prices are amazing. Food is authentic. Check out their daily deals!

Rebecca R.

Yelp
Wow! Way better than expected. Totally home made Mexican food. Chips and salsa home made. Queso home made. Even tortillas hand made. Everything from scratch including pico. Rice is perfect. Really good. You won't be disappointed.
google avatar

Bianca H.

Yelp
Everything is made in house, and fresh. The free salsa wakes you up, with chunks of cilantro and spice! A really really cute place.

Yelp
"Special Cinco de Mayo" menu. Very overpriced and while it did not say "no substitutions or extras" I was told that they were not accommodating changes on today. The margarita served to my group was a different size than served to another group which was again different than the size at another table. I did not get any salt on the rim not did my friend. The tacos that my friend had were so bland and dry. She wasn't offered cheese. My quesadilla had absolutely no flavor. The waitress ran off to paint the face of a young girl at the next table (not even her table) and had us waiting over 8 minutes until we asked another waitress for our check. When the check came it had the outrageous miscalculated price of $55. My friend has frequented this establishment before but after today , we will not be back and it is officially on the list of places to tell others to steer from. Today should have been the day that the service was beyond excellent
google avatar

Nicole R.

Yelp
I love this place. Recently moved a short walk from there and it's a great pop in for dinner place. The inside is so cozy feels like you're eating in someone's kitchen. The food was good very authentic, and they have good specials during everyday. I'm a huge fan of the homemade salsas that they serve you. Definitely great and will visit

Yelp
We decided to try something different so we decided to stop by panchitas.. and I must say this place is amazing, service with a smile which is big to me and the food was amazing and very satiating!!! My overall experience would be 6 stars if I could go higher... I would recommend this place to anyone close to me!!
google avatar

Yelp
ME: The entomatado sounds interesting, I've never had one. How is it? SERVER: Anh, it's just a tortilla that we cover with some sour cream and cheese. What an uninpressive first un-impression. I settled on the sampler platter and it was a mixed bag as well. The enchilada was pretty darn good slathered in their tasty green sauce. I should have had it with chicken though (instead of the stringy beef) and asked for extra queso fresco - which is delicious. The stuffed jalapeño is also good, but partially because it's deep fat fried. However the rest of my meal was terrible. The tamale is essentially a gritty fat roll of cornmeal with a thin line of pulled pork. The black beans are pasty and lack flavor. The chips are overly fried. EAT AT TAQUERIA GUERRERO for a better more authentic meal.
google avatar

Jen B.

Yelp
I liked this place, a LOT. The only way they could be a more authentic Mexican restaurant is if they had a chicken running around between the tables. From the decor to the menu selections, and the abundant use of crumbled queso fresca instead of shredded cheddar cheese, this is the real deal, y'all!! It isn't the usual Tex-Mex, or Cali-style burrito joints (that I also love). They even have Mexican Coke in a bottle! As referenced in Jill C.'s review, I ordered the taco salad with grilled beef, no fried bowl. The salad was delicious and fresh (also low-carb and gluten-free) and the beef was VERY flavorful. I will definitely order that again! Another bonus in my book: they serve the breakfast items ALL DAY! I can't wait to go back and try some more of the menu, maybe I'll sit outside and see if that chicken comes around.

Yelp
I love Panchita's! Such a great, cozy atmosphere and the staff is super nice. The tomatillo salsa they serve with the chips is really good! I always go for the chicken enchiladas with salsa verde or the chicken tamales. Both are awesome and very filling. I've gotten some tacos before (chorizo and some kind of pork, I don't remember which) as well and they were good too but I just can't miss the enchiladas! My boyfriend usually gets the fish tacos though and says they're great! They also have good margaritas and aguas frescas. I'm always so happy to see tamarindo and horchata on any menu in New Orleans and they make it in house here! They have a lot of great specials too!
