Where to Eat in Barrio Logan - Eater San Diego

"With fresh bread and pastries emerging from the oven throughout the day, this traditional panaderia has become the neighborhood’s preferred stop for fresh baked goods. You can find a wide array of Mexican pan dulce and bolillo rolls alongside full trays of cakes, donuts, and croissants. A concha and a warm Chocolate Ibarra from this bakery is a great start to any day." - Mario A. Cortez

Google
One thing I like about this Panaderia is that the bread is mostly fresh. They also have thrifty ice cream which pairs well with most dessert breads. The Conchas were soft and fluffy.

Carlos Babcock

Google
Very reasonably priced pan dulce with coffee. One of three locations. Just down the street from Las Cuatro Milpas, in a corner strip mall.

Leslie Veronica Torres Valencia (Leslie V Capps)

Google
very welcoming and kind service. my family will only ever buy their bread from here

Maria Grey

Google
Legit bakery; quick and great prices. My personal favorites were the cheesecake and the the queso oaxaca, they sell out fast!

Alexandra Kaplan

Google
I’v known about Panchita’s bakery for a long time and maybe due to the location and maybe just maybe because of homelessness the customer service is poor, however I must say the bread is great but not the empanada de crema and bring your cash because if your like me not trying to paid an extra .50 cents on two pieces bread haha stay bless and spread love not hate always!

Kimberly Moran

Google
My husband and I ordered some pan dulce & their mexican hot chocolate. Soft, tasty and it soothed our cozy night craving. The place was small, accepted cash only and the baker put our order together from the window due to covid regulations.

Mila

Google
Their conchas and yoyos are SOOOO GOOOOD! But they only accept cash, so make sure you stop by an ATM if you only use cards. It will be worth it I promise.

Adrian Ortiz

Google
This is some of the best Pan Dulce around. When you get it fresh, it is soft and fluffy. Great flavor. Always been a fan of Panchitas

Yelp
This morning, I arrived early to an appointment and to kill time I stopped by a well-known bakery in Logan for some coffee and pan dulce. While I was paying, a man came in and gently asked for a water cup. One of the women working in the back responded harshly, saying, "That cup costs me a dollar, why would I just give you one?" It was said without any compassion. I could feel that he just needed a little kindness and water --maybe for himself, maybe for his dog. So I turned to him and said, "Pick whatever pan dulce you'd like, I'll get it for you." Then I told the cashier, "Please add his pan and water cup on my tab." The cashier looked at me, a little embarrassed but grateful, and thanked me. I said, "It's no trouble at all. Right now, especially in these times, we must care for one another. That's how we honor who we are and where we come from." Still, I left feeling heavy. I was raised with the sacred teaching that you never deny food or water to someone in need. Kindness is a spiritual offering. Shame on you, Panchita's Bakery. May you remember the spirit of generosity and do better.

Yelp
This place was good but lately their quality has been lacking, old bread gets left there instead of discounting it or giving it away for free. Just recently I visited and purchased some sweet bread and donuts and their cost almost doubled, about a 70% rise on their sweet breads and like i said their quality has gotten worse. The only reason i will come here is if I am nearby and have a sweet tooth.

Yelp
If you are into Mexican style of baked goods, Panchitas Bakery is a place for you. Everything feels like if you are in Mexico and most of the baked goods are light and not as sweet or creamy like what you are accustomed to. Their prices are also reasonable. Friendly staff.

Yelp
Stumbled upon this place, and I'm glad I did! It's an unassuming bakery but there was a great variety of pastries and bread. I picked some random stuff (I don't even know the names), but all of it was so good. It was very inexpensive and tasty. In addition, the cashier was really nice and helpful.

Yelp
A local go-to! Try going in the morning, they'll have a fuller case than later in the day. Perfect pan dulce for your morning coffee! Only real complaint is parking, but sometimes you'll get lucky!

Yelp
Lovely people and FRESH FRESH FRESH!! Conchas are the best in the city. Thank you !!!

Yelp
Came across this bakery in a small parking lot near Chicano Park. You grab a tray and tongs by the register and choose what you want from the display case. Pros: -lots of options. They were still bringing out items around 10am on a Monday. -reasonably priced. My two items came to $3.30 including the credit fee. Cons: -homeless are in the area. They had to ask one guy to leave when he entered their store Other: -$0.50 charge for credit

Yelp
I drove a little far tbh because my friend recommended this bakery, of course I want a Rosca de Reyes for this day, the lady idk if she was stresfull but her actitud was so bad, she said we have to wait for the small size because there were people waiting, I ask her how many, she said 6 and ask her how many are you baking? She said 10? So, giiiirl? Come oooon! You have 4 more to sell!!! I'll never come back, and I love eating bread . So bad.

Yelp
The Pan Dulce ( Mexican Bread) Has a really good flavor like the authentic Mexican BreadAlways the person behind the counter. They always act SUPER RUDE!. Even if People says hi. No greeting, no smile.. (nothing). Don't even answer question in regards to the bread Cashiers never wanted to answer questions or a smile And for that reason I'm giving only 1-

Yelp
Was told by a coworker bout this spot and came thru on a rainy day , inside there is a big line , grab a big plate and tongs and grab what you need and wait in line to ring up , lil bit of a wait but it was worth it and the pan tasted fresh and sweet , tres leches tiny cakes my favorite and I recommend buying the champurrado on a rainy day

Yelp
Cashier lady working tonight 10/03/2024 at 7:40pm is in a foul mood. We waited patiently for her to stop doing what she was doing to check us out. I did not come to this place of business to have my change thrown at my hand and treated in such manner. Please, hire people that will provide good customer service or actually want to work with a smile on their face even if its towards the end of their shift. I stopped coming to this place as my pan cortadillo was still raw during covid lock down and prices went up. Will stop my business again due to being treated like crap.

Yelp
I love this spot! It's my gooo too!!! "authentic" As if I was on my way to the corner bakery shop in Tijuana where I grew up as a kid

Christian W.

Yelp
I'm just going to be completely blunt. I never leave reviews unless a place is really good or really bad. Unfortunately I shouldn't have set my alarm for 5 to show up at 5:30 and expect the freshest food. I should have slept in. I show up and first off, the selection is very small, not much to get. But that's not even why the low rating. Honestly I got 4 different items and they're all terrible. Hard, definitely old, I tried an initial bite when I got in the car and genuinely was choking trying to swallow because of how dry it was. Every item was not only dry but it taste like nothing, there's no flavor. I regret waking up to come here. Do not recommend in the slightest. They also packaged a cake I got where when I opened it, all the icing was pulled off cause they put it on the bottom. Other items are hard as a brick. For 7$ not even close to worth. I'll be throwing this stuff away Sad because I saw all the positive reviews but everyone, I swear, the food was so bad hard and tasteless I'm surprised she let me walk out paying for that

Yelp
After exploring Chicano Park, you should head to Panchita's Bakery #3. I am constantly on the lookout for bakeries. Call it my personal (unhealthy) obsession. But hey, I guess there are worse things. Like most Mexican bakeries, the first step involves grabbing a pair of giant tongs to select your dessert and a cafeteria tray to stack them on. Before moving to California (from the east coast), I never experienced a Mexican bakery. However, so many of the baked goods reminded me of my travels and the delicious french baked goods (that I definitely sampled a lot of). Turns out, it was the French and Spaniards who introduced such baked goods as crispy rolls, baguettes and other sweets to Mexico. Thanks Google! Panchita's Bakery #3 has a total of 3 bakeries (hence the obvious name) as well as a restaurant in San Diego's popular North Park neighborhood. If you're like me, you'll have a hard time picking out a dessert -- the bakery churns out more than 160 varieties of breads, pastries, cookies and desserts. I highly recommend the "Manzana Empanada" (or apple pastry). After loading up our tray with nearly a dozen pastries, our total came out to less than $10. This could get dangerous!

Veronica S.

Yelp
Hi!, I just to give a for the delicious Mexican pan. I think is good and until now I don't have a complain about the pan. Fresh, good and fair price. But two things : They charge you $3 dlls for the box if you want one. The fee charge processing fee with cards payments it's ok. And one of the things not important but necessary to say it's that the young cashier (I don't know if she's relative of the owners) SHE IS Very rude!!!!. Please OWNER talk to her, maybe she can't deal with the stress and need to relax abd take good care of customers. Thank you. I give you 2 stars because the young cashier. Please do something to improve the service.

Yelp
This spot wasn't even one of the panaderias we'd planned on trying this trip but we saw their line on our way to Cuatro Milpas and decided to try it out. Wow, what a win. All our breads were still nice and fresh despite it being morning. Super tasty conchas in particular. The line moved fast and service was friendly too.
google avatar

Jenny G.

Yelp
Horrible panaderia. The bread all tastes the same, it was hard. Nothing good about it. The pan they sell at the Mexican market stores are way better than this. The bread was crusty, dry, no flavor, extremely bland, and old. Also the lady that helped us was so rude and seemed bothered when we were picking the bread. Got an entire bag of bread, had a few bites and threw the entire bag away. Waste of money. DONT EVEN BOTHER! If I could give a negative star I would.
google avatar

Yelp
Delicious, tasty, fair prices all around good place for pan dulce and cakes (cream cheese filled) AWSOME! The only take away was that saw I fly or two on the bread

jaquelin g.

Yelp
Super Decepcionada compre una rosca y no era fresca parecía como que fue hecha por mas de tres Dias es la primera vez que me pasa siempre compro pan de ahí tienen que poner mas atención en las cosas que hacen y la calidad.

Yelp
I bought 5 pieces of Mexican bread of different types and shapes. All of them tasted exactly the same. All was done here was that they shaped them look differently. That's not what I remember bread use to taste like back when I was a child. Change the darn recipe for each type of bread people. Use your imagination (if you have one). So I left the bread in the car for a few hours. Checked the bag where the bread was in. The bottom part of the bag had a big stain of grease. As I examined the bread, it was crumbly and hard. Never seen this happen before. I don't know if It was good thing or not, meaning that it might have had any preservatives in the dough. Very mysterious.

Yelp
Horrible customer service, it was 3 ppl in line, no one came to help, there was a door bell to ring for service it was pressed multiple times. The first person in line said he'd been waiting for 10 minutes and no one came to the window. I yelled through the window and asked if they were open the guy continued to ignore me till the moment I said I was going to take a picture of him and put a review, then he proceeded to call someone on the phone more likely to cover his ass for his wrong doing . He then said to me he was closed for 39 minutes but had no sign up and wouldn't respond to any of the other customers.

Yelp
This place has wonderful Mexican breads, ranging from .80-1.20. This place is in Barrio Logan and is in a shop ion the corner this bakery is open until 9:30pm, they also serve coffee and icecream for only 1.20. Check this place out for fresh Mexican bread and the staff is nice as well. So many types of bread in shapes and sizes. Very warm and delicious.

Vanessa M.

Yelp
Soooooo good. Went after walking around Chicano park and it was the perfect treat. No complaints everything was great.

Yelp
This location has taken the proper precautions to protect their customers during this Covid-19 pandemic. Each customer is not allowed inside as the entrance is covered with plexiglass. The baker takes and orders behind the small window on the plexiglass via words and hand signals, which I truly appreciate for safety reasons. I love all of the pastries here and love their existence as there's not many bakeries to choose from in Central and southern San Diego. From the conchas to the empanadas de cajeta you get all the sweet tradition and airy fluffiness in every pastry. I love that they don't skimp on the sugar ratio to pastry, which makes you salivate with each and every bite. The only minor issue is that the pastries sometimes are over proofed with yeast, which affects the sweetness. Yes yes I realize this location is old school in not taking card payments, but you can buy a lot with just a couple dollars. Please support Panchita's bakery so they can offer traditional Mexican pastries for years to co

Yelp
I like a good Mexican American bakery and this one came through for me with flying colors. I came in and picked up a couple of my favorite Mexican sweet breads, the Cuerno or Mexican croissant and a elotito or little corn (http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/panchitas-bakery-san-diego-3?select=9m6X2nUKjaX7_RgcV32J1w#wYI7uZs2kyHUhZKolr2Ffw). Each cost .70. Both sweet breads were great, but I most enjoyed the cuerno. It had a nice soft golden brown exterior with a very slight crust (http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/panchitas-bakery-san-diego-3?select=9m6X2nUKjaX7_RgcV32J1w#X-jdwZ6tz7ZNgX_0kesZSQ). The inside was not like a traditional flaky french croissant, but more dense and very moist, which great mild buttery flavor I may add (http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/panchitas-bakery-san-diego-3?select=9m6X2nUKjaX7_RgcV32J1w#JJMf9Y1OrxDxA3gfaaX3Aw). The elotito was good too. It tasted good, but they are not intended to be as moist as of the cuerno. It crust was sugary and crusty, and although the inside tasted good, it was a little dry, but perfect for dunking in either mild or coffee (http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/panchitas-bakery-san-diego-3?select=9m6X2nUKjaX7_RgcV32J1w#ebm-62sGBWlF8HRM1o8Frw). By the way, I did not get one, but they make these bolillo rolls baked and stuffed with Mexican Oaxaca cheese and jalapenos, and I heard from the employees and a customer that they are fantastic (http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/panchitas-bakery-san-diego-3?select=9m6X2nUKjaX7_RgcV32J1w#OEIT_8JMfsszKvajFCyf-A). A must on my next visit. Great Mexican bakery....

Yelp
Attention: Mrs. Maria C. Avila, Friday, April 15, 2022--Review is on female cashier in her early 20s. At 7:50am, give or take, I walked in to the bakery to buy bread. At the time to pay, I was given the price and handed the money to the cashier. She began to retrieve my change, paused and said something, I can tell she was short on the change but I could not hear what she said exactly. I have difficulty hearing out of one ear, and to make matters worse she had plexiglass, a face mask, and she was speaking in a low tone of voice. I can see she was already frustrated. I told her politely I couldn't make out what she said and asked her to come again. She scuffed at me, grabbed the tray my bread was on, and flipped my bread off the tray towards me onto the counter. Her unnecessary reaction infuriated me, so I threw the change on the ground and told her to behave like a descent person. It is unnecessary to behave that way with someone because you are having a bad day. It's the beginning of the day and if one feels that incapable of performing a job, then ask for the day or find another job you can tolerate. I admit my reaction wasn't one of composure, but I have been a long time customer. I am reaching my 50s, and I do not believe having the bread I paid for flipped at me is okay because I couldn't hear what was said. It wasn't like I egged her on to behave like that. Sorry to say, but I clearly see this attitude younger people have and their posture with changing social behavior has grown out of control. Common courtesy and mutual respect still have a place in this community. Especially at a business when you expect patrons to return. Drop the defy logic and race to force people to see things from irrational perspectives to push self entitlement. I hope the owner of Panchita's Bakery reads this review and reason with the terms her long time customer asks. Please reiterate customer service oriented practices that have long been employed and work nourish a long time customer and business relationship. If young people like this young cashier cannot comply or comprehend the principles of making good business, how are they going to make your business prosper and continue to grow? This incident came from a poor way of explaining to a customer that her box was short changed. All I used was a five dollar bill at 7:50 in the morning. This cashier should have not got pissed off because I couldn't hear her through one side of my hearing, through the plexiglass, her mask, and her already frustrated attitude which resulted in her talking in the tone of voice she did. I hope one of three things happen to correct the problem. This cashier gets educated on business the proper acumen she is to have, self control, and acceptable mannerisms, or she is replaced with someone who can perform as a cashier should. I did attempt to speak with a manager, but I had to walk out to cool off and not contribute to the problem after being treated this way. After calming down, I called the number listed on the directory and asked for a manager in a polite and monotoned tone of voice. Unfortunately, the same cashier answered the call, heard my voice and told me she would not allow me to speak with a manager. I politely told her I would look into getting a manager another way and ended the call. I called the Bakery's Golden Hill site and spoke with another employee (sounded like a young male). I asked for his help in getting a manager to speak with me, he asked why and I explained. He sounded empathetic, took my name and phone number, and told me he would have a manager call me back. Still no call back. I hope I do reach a manager eventually. This is what led to this post and I hope the owner looks into adjusting the service end of her business. I have been going to this bakery since I was a kid, and this is the first time in a long long time I have felt uncomfortable and angry in dealing with anyone who's worked there.

Yelp
Best bread in San Diego. The conchitas melt in your mouth. The jalapeño/cheese birotte Is sooooooo good

Igg W.

Yelp
I love the bread here. But have to go in the evening when the bread is actually fresh, same day, and soft. Have gone at 10am several times and the bread is hard and dry. The women that work in the morning are also rude. $3 for 3 pieces of bread. Will have to look for a new panaderia.

Yelp
What happen to your customer service wow! I said good afternoon and no response or eye contact. I do not recommend.

Yelp
This review is only for the location and Rosca De Reyes I have not tried any of there other breads. This is a small Mexican bakery close to the I-5 in Barrio Logan. The parking lot is a little tight but if you are patient you can wait for a spot or find parking on the street. I bought a small rosca, I was looking for just enough for the office. It was $16 which I thought was a little pricey. It was about 12 inches long and it didn't look like it was worth the price until we cut it open and saw that it stuffed with candied fruit and nuts (Walnuts to be exact so if you have an allergy beware). This is the first time that I eat or see a rosca stuffed with most of the fruit/candy that usually goes in the outside. We all liked it, the breading was good traditional rosca bread, the stuffing made sure you had a yummy bite every time. If I am ever in the area I will try their Mexican bread since the rosca was good. They did not have any when I stopped by at 8:30 in the morning on Dia de Reyes :( I think it was because they had a lot of roscas on all the selves.

Yelp
Came in here on a recommendation from a friend and got a lot of pastries. The apple empanada had a lot of apple chunks (I was told that before, they would slice it thin), but it was delicious and most likely, I think, better warmed up. The mango empanada was all right; there weren't any chunks, but more of a jelly consistency. The fan favorite was the apricot one with the right sweetness and consistency! Best of all, the empanadas were not soggy at all! The place is small, so I do not recommend bringing more than 1-2 friends to this place; it can get crowded in there. I love that it's self-served and I can pick out which and how much pastries I wanted. The next time I come back, I do want to try their tres leches cake and get another bite of apricot empanada.
google avatar

Danielle S.

Yelp
Pan Dulce of all kinds, tres leche, thrift ice cream, coffee and hot cocoa. This is a cash only spot and all the food signs are in Spanish. I recommend try anything you see that looks delicious. You won't be disappointed. In the cold case there is Flan, and Sopapilla cheesecake. The cheesecake alone is worth the trip. I foresee many tips here
google avatar

Melissa M.

Yelp
Stale and old carrot cake bread with a crumbly frosting. I went back to tell the cashier if I could exchange for a different one and she said they couldn't that I should've checked before I walked out. I showed her how hard the bread was and she said it got dry from the air. She then admitted the carrot cake bread was a few days old but unfortunately couldn't do nothing about it. They have no customer service what so ever. The other breads that I bought where ok.
google avatar

Mike P.

Yelp
This is the local spot. Throwback thrifty ice cream with no listed flavors. The man behind the counter is just that " the man ". Sit back watch him and enjoy. He works with precision and a smile. Great prices.
google avatar

Melizza C.

Yelp
Keeping it OG in Logan.. cafecito and pan dulce.. $1.10. Life can't get any better than that.
google avatar

Victoria L.

Yelp
I love mexican bakeries. Pan dulce? A thousand times yes plz. The best thing about the pan dulce at Panchitas? It's not nearly as dry as typical mexican bakeries. Even their plain bread rolls (sandwich/torta style) were delicious (and warm out of the oven in the middle of the afternoon!). Prices are dirt cheap and the staff is friendly. Yes, it's a little rough around the edges, but who cares when you're stuffing your mouth full of sugary carbohydrates?
google avatar

PD C.

Yelp
Panchita's is where I wander when I am down and need some serious comfort carbs. I get a large hot mexican chocolate made from Chocolate Ibarra. Then depending on how bad I am I will get either a gingerbread piggie, a corn meal sweet muffin, pumpkin or sweet potato empanada, pineapple pastry or a slice of day old wedding or birthday cake made from real buttercream frosting from the carousel fridge. Not a place to hang out, just a place to run in with your biggest and darkest sunglasses and run out.
google avatar

Mavelyn R.

Yelp
Great little place for Sweet Bread (Pan dulce). I am a declared concha fan, but many of their other choices are great too. Their coffee is delicious too, it is that home style flavor that is not too strong but it is still very good. The only down sides I have identified are pretty much hit or miss and they are parking and service. I guess on busy days this can be understood, but one still hopes to get good, kind service no matter what, however I do admit that they get you in and out fairly quickly. Prices are bomb because bread this good shouldn't be this cheap but, somehow it is. Overall it is a bakery with great products but don't expect to come here for the "experience". Come in, get to bread, get yo' coffee and get out. Quick and easy.
google avatar

Barb L.

Yelp
I love this place. Right down the street from Las Cuatro Milpas. Great coconut macaroons, pina or custard tunovers (empanadas), and bolillo rolls. Fyi, if you're not used to self-serve bakeries, grab a platter and a pair of tongs and choose what you want with those. Replace the tongs and bring the platter of goodies to the cashier so they can bag them up. Cash only.
google avatar

Edward S.

Yelp
Discovered it while waiting in line at Cuatros Milpas. (as I'm sure many have) Galletas were fresh, warm, delicious, and reasonably priced.
google avatar

Desi N.

Yelp
Stressed spelled backwards is desserts. Coincidence? I think not! Panchitas is sooo good! I have this inside joke for people who can't pronounce spanish words (Pan-cheetahs) Lmao! It sounds awful anyhow, after a long day rippin & runnin around, sho' nuff you can put all yo faith in this place. I am a sucka for desserts! Not just ANY dessert but my guiltiest pleasure that I over indulge in is Pan Dulce! Inexpensive and delicious! Can't go wrong at all! This place is better than any donut shop you know. Home made freshness sippin thru the door. You have to try Panchitas! It's right across the street from the entrance of the Coronado Bridge! So hey, you can't miss it!!
google avatar

Mia E.

Yelp
Love the hot chocolate, just like chocolate abuelitas. Pan dulce sooo yummy . Hits the spot every time
google avatar

Suzanna L.

Yelp
Yea, I only happened upon this location because I went to lunch at Las Cuatros Milpas. But, I'm so glad that I did. I was so full from lunch, but I decided to try their rice pudding. It was delicious! I ended up finishing the whole frickin' thing even though my stomach was nearing maximum capacity. The rice in the pudding was moist and succulent... one of the best I've ever tried.
google avatar

Ben R.

Yelp
This place has some of the best bread known to San Diego but the bonus of the delicious bread is the awesome grandma's hot chocolate together makes a dynamic duo look at your recipe make sure they charge you right
google avatar

Ana M.

Yelp
Great Mexican bread! (Cash only) Closes late and Opens early. Convenient location; has a small and busy parking lot. I highly recommend the bolillo with Chihuahua cheese, small conchas and besos.
google avatar

Tiffany N.

Yelp
Their pumpkin empanada is delicious. It is essentially a hand held portable pumpkin pie that is not too sweet so that the flavors of the pumpkin are obvious and awesome. I've tried other pastries from here also, and they were all satisfying. Really cheap, with lots of options. Always happy to go here!

Yelp
This bakery is amazing! We got there right as it was closing and just wow! The carrot cake was perfect and so different, we also bought an assortment of cookies and pastries each one was wonderful and crumbly. Our total bill was $3 :). What a hidden gem in Barrio Logan, I am rarely impressed with baked goods as I bake a lot myself but this bakery will not disappoint!

Yelp
Damn its hot inside there! The second you walk in you want to walk right back out but if you stay long enough to buy a carton of milk and some sweet bread you won't regret it. As for the staff, there's nothing friendly about this place.
