Where to Eat in Barrio Logan | Eater San Diego

"With fresh bread and pastries emerging from the oven throughout the day, this traditional panaderia has become the neighborhood’s preferred stop for fresh baked goods. You can find a wide array of Mexican pan dulce and bolillo rolls alongside full trays of cakes, donuts, and croissants. A concha and a warm Chocolate Ibarra from this bakery is a great start to any day." - Mario A. Cortez

Google
Greatly convenient Mexican bakery here in Golden Hill. They have a lot of great options to choose from. I always have my go to’s which you can see pictured here. It was also nice seeing the bakers folding dough through the glass window. Keep an open mind and try some fresh Mexican pastry’s/ Pan Dulce. Especially if you’re coming to San Diego for the first time.

Google
Not cash only - will take a debit or credit card. HUGE selection of bakery items and you can watch the bakers hand rolling all the pastries. The smell is amazing! Bought a big selection of goodies and everything has been excellent! What a find!

Christina

Google
Not cash only anymore, they charge 50 cents per debit card or credit card. 😃 the prices are excellent, the desserts are truly authentic and amazing to the area. Take some sort of translation on your phone because the items are labeled in Spanish. Worth It, Go!!

Google
Wouldn't change a thing. Pastries are fresh and good stock, and a great price. Nice when you want a treat but don't have time to wait around

Joe ANTONIO

Google
Wow. They put out fresh bread 2 times a day. It's absolutely 💯 👌 🔥 🙌

Bart Haeck

Google
Lovely bakery with lots of choices at fair prices in an overly expensive neighborhood. Went to get some pastries every day during my 3 day stay in SD. Good coffee too! Just pick a plate and a pair of tongs, get whatever you like, and pay at the counter.

Google
Very impressed. I ended up going to Panchita's twice during our trip to San Diego. Left both occasions with plenty of pan dulce. There's a great selection and on both days the bread never seemed like it was from the previous day. Most of the items are common across other panaderías. However, one item I have never seen before is budín. I bought some here and was instantly hooked. On our last day in San Diego, I ended up going back to buy more to take home. The staff was nice as well. Definitely recommend stopping by here.

The Prices are always changing and very rude workers. I have lived in the area since 2010 and have witnessed first hand how this place has gone down hill. Pathetic really!

Sherwin S.

Yelp
Sandra helped me and is a sweetheart! Never been whee before but service was amazing and so was the food. Open kitchen so you can see worker...clean looking. Thanks Sandra

Yelp
We have been buying bread for our home in small quantities and in large for events for decades. The flan is incredible! And of course, if you make it before they run out, you'll have to pick up the bollio with melted cheese and jalapeños. My mouth is watering just thinking about the warm bread when it just comes out. The cashiers are always sweet and will check with the bakers in the kitchen if asked for a bread that is not on the display trays. Shoppers are kind and respectful to each other which makes the experience even better. Small quaint bakery.

Yelp
Hands down the best donuts and baked goods in barrio logan. They're open early so it's this perfect place to stop for pastries on the way to work.

Yelp
The greatest of all time mexican bakery! Original location so you know it's real, no flame on growing your business but this is where I will go 10/10 times for the panchitas specials. Quick service, helps if you speak spanish. Cute and tiny interior, you walk in surrounded on all sides by bread like they're robbing you, but you're happy to pay! Local secret, get the queso oaxaca con japaleño bolillo if you can, you won't regret it unless you can't handle the heat :))
google avatar

Yelp
Absolutely love Panchitas Bakery! Their bolillos are always the best when you get them fresh crispy on the outside, soft and warm inside. Perfect. Friendly staff and an amazing selection of traditional Mexican pastries make this place a must-visit

Yelp
Couple of Days ago, I bought some cones filled with cream (30) of them for my grandparents party and and 4 hours after purchasing them they went bad, taste nasty . I called the store but they just said too bad I should've been in fridge before serving them.. And hung up the phone.

Karla H.

Yelp
Flor provided great customer service, she was so sweet! The bread is amazing! Very clean!

Yelp
love panchitas! this always hits the spot when craving pan dulce with my coffee. You do have to show up earli-ish around 8-9am to get your fav bread. By 10am its a lot of left overs. They also have a second batch in the afternoon but I think its the same thing, show up early before the good ones are gone. They also finally take card/apple pay!

Yelp
Been craving some pan dulce while on vacation. Saw this places and stopped to check them out. Glad I did because this place was pretty fire. The first thing I noticed was that the breads are pretty small but thats ok because they are very good tasting. There wasnt really no customer service because its a grab your own bread as a you go. Grab a tray grab some tongs and help yourself. The bread was really good I will say that. Give this place a go.

Yelp
Service needs improvement 4 out 5 times No coffee No hot chocolate in the morning I have stoped by the bakery after 6 pm and definitely no coffee or hot chocolate "chocolate warmer is not working" is what I am always told It's just frustrating in the morning I can't enjoy my favorite cup of coffee in the morning. I have been a customer at panchitas since the 90s I enjoy panchitas very much. By the way Logan and Golden Hill have the same issue

Melissa K.

Yelp
My boyfriends favorite sweet is a yo-yo and the ones at Panchita's are hands down his fav. We've gotten a few other items, that have all been delicious. We will come back every time we come to San Diego.

Margarita G.

Yelp
I always recommend Panchitas bakery and we had not been there in a while. We went today because we have a work event and thought of taking pan dulce. We had two transactions. Honestly we don't think we will be going back. First of all the lady at the register was rude, she was nice to the lady in front of us in line. She probably picks and chooses who she wants to be nice to. Second, woth the first transaction we bought 20 pieces of bread and asked if we can get a box. I mean it is a lot of bread. They charged us $3 for a box. You would think that a box would be included since we got 20 pieces. The second transaction, I got 3 conchas, 1 cheesecake and a chocolate donut. She charged me $12 , I thought it was a lot so I checked my receipt and she over charged me! So I went back and told her and she wasn't happy about it and I guess didn't believe me so she grabbed my bag and counted the bread. It's sad because we love the bread but the customer service is not there.
google avatar

Jorge P.

Yelp
I always love this place been going there for over 20 years. But today the lady at the register was rude and charge me extra because I had my own coffee thermo but I always put hot chocolate in there. Is not a big thermo and I always get it and get some bread also. And without telling me she charged me twice the amount.!! Paid $16 for 4 conchas and a large chocolate. This has never happened with the other ladies at the register and this is the 2nd time she does this. I'm not happy with her service. Lady if you don't like your job find a different one. I called back to let her know that I wasn't happy with her service and hung up on me!!! -*

Yelp
Wanted to get some local Mexican baked goods and stumbled upon this little bakery! There was a wide selection of baked goods and bread. The staff were super nice and welcoming. The churro was a little cold but still had good sugar/cinnamon. The butterfly pastry cookie was also very buttery and flakey. The apricot empanada was probably the best because there was lots of apricot jam. Loved how it wasn't too sweet and had a nice filling to pastry ratio!
google avatar

Natalin G.

Yelp
First of I've been coming to this location for as long as I can remember.. however lately I've noticed the prices for each pastry are not listed under each piece or there's no menu at ALL. First it did not bother me however as prices began to rise drastically I thought why in the world are we buying without knowing how much each pastry costs? So I brought it up to the registers attention, she mentioned previous customers have also complained because by the time they pay they sorta have in mind how much it'll be as they are regulars whoever when they're short a few bucks they have to leave empty handed.... I was speechless. I asked if the manager was aware because I also thought it was not ok.. she mentioned she was however things had not changed. Now I don't know with what intentions management does this but it is NOT okay. Now this has been going on for MONTHS. It's sad because they have regulars from the neighborhood elderlies etc idk it just bothers me a lot specially for the rest of the customers.
google avatar

Jessie S.

Yelp
Tend to make it here at least once or twice a month on weekends. The key it to get here earlier than later for the best selection. The bolillos are awesome and even better when fresh. Never had anything I didn't like. It's a small location, but you are here for the pan and not the ambiance. LOL. Service is always fast but friendly.

Jamila G.

Yelp
The only reason that I'm going to give them a star is because the bread is good but besides that the cashiers there are always RUDE they're always with an attitude they're never polite and when you ask them a question, they always answer with an attitude I love coming to this place, but it's so hard when the women that work there don't have good customer service. It's hard to want to come back, they're always with their ugly face and they look at you like you're not welcome, I wish the owner knew about this. And they've done this plenty of times to me, they never smile, why work in a great bakery if you don't have good customer service.

Yelp
The best in town bread is always fresh... if you want bolillos get there early! Bread is on the high price but I guess everything costs more now. Their cheesecake is the best and must try
google avatar

Madelina N.

Yelp
I am a visitor from out of town and have been coming here every morning since I found it! The baked goods here are so delicious and super cheap. My favorite thing I've tried is probably the cheesecake... amazing texture and flavor! Also love the muffins. It's been fun trying out different pastries without worrying about the price. You get the treats yourself so there's no one rushing you and the cashier is always super friendly!

Yelp
Guy driving a new luxury car: Cuts in front of me in line Me: The line starts in the back. Guy driving a new luxury car: Do you mind if I just ask one question? Me: Go ahead. Guy driving a new luxury car: Did the prices just go up on the bread? Worker: Yes. We posted the new prices here yesterday. Guy driving a new luxury car: So the price doubled? Worker: The new price is $1.75. Guy driving a new luxury car: So the price more than doubled? Worker: Yes the prices went up yesterday. Guy driving a new luxury car: You gave me a ripped up receipt and my wife is pissed the bill was so high. She sent me to find out why we were charged so much. Crowd: Glares at luxury car guy. Guy driving a new luxury car: Leaves in a huff yelling the prices are outrageous here! It was worth waiting an extra few minutes in line to watch luxury car guy lose it over a $1 price increase. I noticed his wife in the illegally parked luxury car. I picked 2 conchas. The white one was fresh and fluffy with a delicious mild sweet flavor. The yellow cocha tasted day old as it was a bit hard and missing the fresh baked flavor. Note to self avoid the concha if there are only 2 left on the rack. Sadly I showed up too early for Pan de Muerto. Worker said they would have some after 2pm. They bake great tasting treats here. Quality control isn't the greatest. They need a day old bread area. In the summer I've seen flies land on stuff.

Yelp
Zero stars. Dont call it mexican bread please, is not! Mexican bread is fresh, moist, delicious. I bought bread friday evening to bring to soccer game the day after. I got all kinds of sweet bread, conchas, cookies, empanadas, doughnuts.... ALL tasted old and dry. Is a bakery! Come on! All you do is bread and it was disgusting
google avatar

Randi C.

Yelp
All pastries sampled were delicious. My daughter gives it 4/5 stars. When asked why she responded, "It's not good enough for 5 stars." -this review was approved by said daughter.

Yelp
Great traditional style Mexican bakery. Picking out your treats here is a bit of a different procedure than at other types of bakeries, but very easy once you get the hang of it. You just stop by the entrance to pick up a round metal tray and tongs, then use the tongs to pick your favorites to take over to the register. When I was there, there were quite a few customers (line out the door), but the service was fast and efficient. This is NOT a fancy-style place, but the prices were very reasonable and everything I tried was fresh and delicious. I loved the little pig-shaped cookies (their version is very flavorful), the cheesecake (a different style than you might be used to, less sweet), bread pudding, mango empanadas, and guava empanadas. Caveat: plan ahead. There is no place to eat inside or outside the bakery. If you try to eat these in your car on the way home, you will get half of it on your lap and the other half on the floor of the car! Just sayin'. Also, if you go there and you accidentally buy too much (which i do every time!), most of the items store well in the fridge or freezer. A few seconds in the microwave will make them taste like they are right out of the oven.

Mayra V.

Yelp
The bread is great! The variety is extensive however what they have is what you get unless the have extra bread carts in the back. I usually go for the jalapeño and cream cheese bread it's pretty good my husband likes it. I gave it 4 stars because it's not the best I have tasted but I can almost guarantee it's the best in San Diego. I went in yesterday and found a jericalla in their mini fridge, it was a bit sweet for my taste but the flavor was so authentically delicious with the Mexican cinnamon I was happily surprised.
google avatar

Monica J.

Yelp
The Sweet Bread is always fresh and you can order your Rosca de Reyes here. I always buy my Mexican bread here.

Rita C.

Yelp
Unfortunately I've had to lower my review for Panchitas Bakery. I've been going there since 1997 but lately my past few visits, the pan dulce (sweet bread) has been very dry. What a shame. They must have different bakers or they have changed recipes with not enough either butter, lard or whatever that the bread is dry. My roommate also agrees. Hopefully the owners can test their bread with customers to get their true review. I would not change from 5 stars to 3 unless there was a huge difference in taste--which there is.

Myriam V.

Yelp

Yelp
We went to the Golden Hills Cafe for lunch and then walked over to this wonderful bakery; our first time at both places. It's always exciting to try something new and this place didn't disappoint. You grab a large, round metal try and a pair of tongs and help yourself to what you want. Most items are labeled so you know what they are although with some, we had to guess. Prices aren't labeled but everything was affordable. I grabbed what looked like a slice of pizza; it was a delicious cheese blintz. You can also watch the bakers cooking in the back which was cool as was the huge Virgin of Guadalupe above our heads. They take debit cards and staff were nice. Go give it a try!
google avatar

Shanny L.

Yelp
Definitely a winner if you want Horchata! I was craving it and google led me to this place. It did not disappoint! My complaint is: the paper straw with a plastic cup. SMH. I don't understand the logic. The straw did not last before it began to fall apart. It really does ruin the experience. And lastly, the gal working here was not friendly. We complimented them on having the best horchata and she responds with in an abrupt manner: "That's because we make it right, here." Well, alrighty then.

Jae G.

Yelp
The place is hot as hell, no restroom, the empanadas weren't tasty, the mantecadas were not good, they were bland in taste, the conchas were the only pastries that were worthy of the 2 stars I gave, the lady there seemed annoyed & not welcoming. I won't come back
google avatar

Lawrence C.

Yelp
Selection, depth of variety, price, and reasonable quality all contribute to me awarding 5 stars to this bakery. I'm generally not a fan of Mexican bakeries, as I don't find their desserts especially sweet, HOWEVER, the texture of the Conchas here (aka cream puffed donuts) and their coconut macaroons are stellar. Even the chocolate chip cookie, which is a basic at Mexican bakeries is better than most. I'll be back!!!
google avatar

Grace C.

Yelp
I went to this bakery when I was in the area and it was super good! The pastries were fresh and delicious with a good variety. I loved the guava empana. Service was ok, overall a good bakery to check out.
google avatar

Linda K.

Yelp
I'm giving this bakery 3 stars strictly for the tres leches. They didn't say anything on the menu about having strawberry jam AND nuts on the cake. Also it was dry, not enough leche was added to the cake, it just tasted like vanilla cake with strawberry jam.
google avatar

Amor C.

Yelp
Always bomb! My family has been coming to panchitas for years and the bread is always great. This time I happened to get a tres leches cake for a party, and it was fantastic as well!

Tony C.

Yelp
This bakery had the selection of any bakery I have been to. Donuts, cookies, cake by the piece and whole cakes great for birthdays or any celebration! Don't miss this great find!!!
google avatar

Ruben G.

Yelp
Excellent Roscón De Reyes. Easy to book one and very reasonable price. That is the only item I have purchased from them.
google avatar

Rita C.

Yelp
Terrific Mexican bakery (pan dulce). I've gone here for over 25 plus years. Always fresh baked desserts and bread, and the staff are always very nice and friendly. It's hard to only buy a few pieces of pan dulce as they are all delicious. Totally recommend.

Chelsea V.

Yelp
I ordered a cake for my child's birthday. My sister went to pick it up today, & it doesn't look anything like what we had ordered. They didn't even have the professionalism to call & apologize for their mistake. Their employees were dismissive & i had to speak over the phone with one of them. They discounted the name personalization, but that doesn't even come close to paying for this crap cake. The party is today & now i don't have time to order from somewhere else.
google avatar

Felicitas L.

Yelp
If you want the most delicious Tres Leches cake you've ever had, look no further! At least, that's what I've been told by my husband & everyone else who loves Tres Leches. A Tres Leches cake from here never disappoints. However, the writing on the cake will be a bit DIY-ish if you know what it mean. It is a charming bakery, and they make quality baked goods. Very popular. Always a line when I come, even at night! It's legit. I come at least once a year to buy a cake for my husband who loves it. Be aware, they are CASH ONLY! Plus, parking lot is very very tiny so you might have to park on the street.

Rosario M.

Yelp
The Bread is good. I usually go for the rosca. Just go early! It's worth the wait. If you don't have the time, go the day before.

Irasema B.

Yelp
This place has had great Mexican bread for years. However, recently their prices have sky rocketed for what's a basic treat. Mexican pastries anywhere are usually maybe $1.00 a piece. I get it since COVID everything has increased, but when you walk out of here with 4-5 pieces and pay nearly $15 it's becoming a bit ridiculous. With that being said, I don't have a problem paying for a great product, but the product has to justify the expense. However, yesterday I picked up a Rosca with cream cheese. A small for $24, Medium, $42 and a large for $72. I waited 15-20 minutes for a small because it was still in the oven. I don't know if it was because of the line/ pressure for these to be handed off to customers, but I have to tell you this is the worst Rosca I ever had. We ordered it with cream cheese and I can barely see any of the filling. The bread is dry and over baked. Where did the old baker go? If fired or left either hire him back or find a good one because this location on C street is going downhill.

rick V.

Yelp
I'm sorry, this place has gone downhill from the pastries to the lead. I was running the front register three dollars for a box. Are you kidding me? The pastries were stale unbelievable this place has gone down. I wouldn't feed this to my pigs if I had some like the old days now I see why they're going downhill. Never again will I step a foot in this place the place is dirty and will not even send my worst enemy.

Suzette B.

Yelp
Ordered: 2 elotes 2 conchas 1 cookie 1 sugar donut Elotes were hard like they were stale.
google avatar

Anthony J.

Yelp
ONE THING... The baked goods are good. But ONE THING... I was told that my order was going to cost .50 cents mire because I was using my Credit/ Debit Card. This is the very first time I have ever heard that!!! I kniw that sone stores will charge you .50 cents if your order is less than $5.00 but this was a foest time I ever heard of them charging.40 cents for an order that was almost $10.00. I look forward to hearing if this happened to you as well.
google avatar

Jeffrey E.

Yelp
Authentic panadería. Fresh, no-nonsense. Delish and fresh!!! Located in the heart of Golden Hill. This is a real Mexican bakery. Don't expect smiles and pretty eyelashes- get your goods, pay and go. The quality is first rate.

Carlos R.

Yelp
It's been a while since my last visit due to a poor customer service experience that I had and decided to give it another go. Don't get me wrong, the baked goods are great it's just that some people are not meant to be in certain customer environment jobs. Cashier stuffed 6 pieces of bread including 2 donuts into this tiny bag. I know we are all struggling economically but common sense should be part of that. It's not the first time with this person as she used to work at the one in Barrio Logan. I hope someone trains her how to pack soft bread properly. One of these days someone is going to capitalize on these faults and we will loose a well known staple in San Diego.
google avatar

Valerie T.

Yelp
Not knowing it was cash only the first time I was bummed to find out after waiting in the long line. So don't forget cash!!! I have gone now multiple times and at all hours of the day and it's at no surprise the line still awaits me each and every-time so if your in a hurry this is not the place for you. Do to covid you can no longer go inside. Unless you know about what a traditional panaderia is and or all about the breads, pastries, cookies desserts or cakes you will be picking off the number and what you see in the window. You can't really do wrong as they all are amazing especially with a hot cup of coffee. Without explanation of the product for the average person this makes knowing what you want difficult leading to the person holding up the line sometimes. ** Tip:: Watching another customer struggle with what to order the cashier wasn't the friendliest so do a little homework before you go and take a peak at the window selection before jumping in the line. The fruit and or cheese filled pastries will never let you down. The teleras are white bread and great for sandwiches. The pan dulce translates to sweet bread also called concha's are a classic and come in different sizes and a variety of types. They have a bunch of different types of cookies and sweets to satisfy anyone. No mater where you are in San Diego they have multiple locations and if you go you can watch the magic happen in front of you and smell the freshly baked goodies. So wake up early and try a little of everything. ¡Lo amarás!

Yelp
Small parking lot and possibly dangerous to your front bumper if your car is lowered lol. Cash only would be the only downside I see to this place. I have been here on several occasions and I enjoyed their delicious treats. Yesterday I swung by after work and got an extra large rainbow sprinkle cookie, two macaroons, a piece of cheesecake, and a flan. I was shocked when the nice worker stated "4.75 please". You got to be kidding me! 4.75 for what other places would charge 20 bucks for. Not sure if it was because it was later in the evening and they mark down items, but hey I ain't going to complain! My wife enjoyed the treats. I have had their tres leche cake, cookies, pans, and chocolate cake before and they were all great. You can't really beat this quality for this price. Would recommend you stop by to satisfy your sweet tooth.

Debra B.

Yelp
So incredibly yummy almost always open . Staff is friendly and the sprinkle donut is what dreams are made of
