Eater’s Most-Read Stories of 2023 - Eater

"Literally no one had 'Panera sandwich purse' on their 2023 brand stunts bingo card which is what made the ridiculousness of Panera’s BAGuette so decidedly welcome." - Erin DeJesus

Use Panera’s Baguette Purse to Carry a Better Sandwich - Eater

"Panera is taking the “baguette bag,” a very Y2K style first introduced by Fendi, seriously, and launching a limited-edition run of 500 embossed green purses in conjunction with New York Fashion Week. Each purse, which costs $39.50, is long and thin and “perfectly sized to carry one of Panera’s new Toasted Baguettes,” and will come with a gift card for one of the sandwiches when you buy one online." - Jaya Saxena

Google
This was my first time at a Panera Bread, I thought I would try something new. I bought the Chicken Bacon Rancher cause the picture on the order screen was amazing looking. I will never come back to Panera Bread again. I don’t even think I can classify this as food. It is disgustingly bland and looks nothing like what you are ordering. I wasted $14.51 for a bag of chips and a Dr. Pepper.

Google
I love Panera! But every time I get and pay for a large coffee… I literally only have like 3/4 of my cup full. 3/4 of a cup, But paying for a large. Please start filling the drinks and giving us our money’s worth. Ty.

Google
They have good pastries, bread and coffee. Their meals and soups are mediocre. The service is average. I had a breakfast sandwich that wasn't that great for the price. There is nothing really special about the restaurant. It looks like the place in town to drink coffee, work on your laptop or rag chew with friends. Not worth going back to…..

I eat at Panera “ALL” the time. Today however, was a “not-so-good” experience. Upon arrival, the lobby smelled like someone had mopped the bathroom, then the lobby. It really smelled bad. The kiosk was down, so we had to order at the desk. No issues there. My wife got a Fuji apple Salad, with some customizations. It was good, as usual. I got the broccoli-cheddar soup. Tasted great as usual. The baguette was a little old, as was the tea, which tasted awful. The service was a little slower than usual as well. All-in-all, a 3, even though the food was good.

Google
Great visit. Service was fast and good. Location was clean and the wait was not too bad. I had the chicken Chipotle Flatbread pizza which was actually better than expected. We came specifically so my daughter could get the broccoli cheddar soup, and she was not disappointed. Will definitely be back. Keep up the good work.

Google
One of the only places who always gets my order right! As a vegan i appreciate it since i can’t have dairy.

Google
My mac and cheese and bread were delicious, but a little overpriced for what I got. That's par for the course for Panera, unfortunately, but at least the food is usually pretty good. The fuji apple lemonade I had was way too sweet, but once I cut it with some water it had a really great flavor. Service was fast and friendly, so overall I had a good time.

Google
Good food, fast service, good location for a lunch break or a nice place to study. I enjoyed the chicken Caesar salad…. The tomato soup has great flavor!

Yelp
Their lunch boxes are convenient for meetings but the sandwiches are just okay. I think the lunch boxes from chick-fil-a are better. Takeout orders are fast and efficient. Love their unlimited coffee though.

Yelp
Horrible service, food is alright but the service is awful and hateful. To much unneeded bad attitudes.

Yelp
I didn't know that I visit this place more often than I thought...Is it the relaxed environment, with nice AC (on the cooler side)...or the not-so-big portion sizes that make it just the perfect place for me while waiting for my daughter to get out of dance class... A nice hot cup of tea, the Chefs Fuji apple and chicken salad, and feeling the sensation of Fall, which lured me to order the Autumn Squash Soup for the perfect pair. The portion size was just right.. the salad was absolutely delicious! The crumbled blue cheese, red onion, and toasted pecans and delicious grilled chicken was awesome! The squash soup was sweet, yet creamy and delicious. The French bread had me dipping! Yeup! I'm a dipper! Great, relaxed ambiance, nice service...and a good ol cup of tea will have me coming back over and over:)

Yelp
You're joking... for $10?? I feel like there should be a lot more of what the actual sandwich is supposed to be. At least we will get a refund but not fun when that is supposed to be your dinner.

Yelp
This place was amazing, I was genuinely in tears to see a POC working at this establishment. I met the young man (Christopher or Christian I think). He was so kind, I could genuinely see his happiness and feel it the atmosphere as well. Thank you Panera for including people like me!

Yelp
Expect corporate minded food; not imaginative nor creative whatsoever. Use in emergency only.

Yelp
Was excited about going to Panera I was looking forward to visiting Panera, and the cashier suggested the chipotle chicken avocado melt sandwich. I chose to order it because he said it was the best sandwich. Unfortunately, when I received my sandwich, it did not appear to be anything like what he had described. I was disappointed because the sandwich appeared to be a miserable sandwich that you'd get from a gas station. I only ate half of the sandwich because it was so terrible, so I decided to write a review. I had also noted that there were flys in the dessert display case, which no one seemed to be trying to get rid of. Unfortunately, I will not be returning to any Panera Bread locations because my previous encounters with them have always been negative.

L W.

Yelp
Pulled up to order at the drive-thru and asked for a minute to review the menu. No cars behind me. Woman didn't know her mic was still on and made derogatory statements about me (10 seconds hadn't passed) for not being ready with an order when I pulled up. I replied to her rude comments so she would realize her mic was on and drove off. They apparently hate their customers and I will oblige by taking my business elsewhere

Yelp
This is $11 worth of food? I am a bit perplexed that I'm given a bowl and it's not filled. Are these the normal portions Panera serves? I can't imagine I'll try ordering from here again for a meal. Bakery items are good but this meal is upsetting.

Yelp
I visit the Panera Bread location on west Detroit in Broken Arrow, Ok on a regular basis. I find the food to be always good and the service and friendliness of the staff very good. The manager Lauren is always helpful . I will continue to visit this location. The store is always clean .

Yelp
Had soup 9.99 for Luke warm and a small serving for the price. I did order take out but for the price was a too small of portion

Yelp
I love Panera and I went in thinking I could grab a quick sandwich to go and use my free birthday thing to get a free pastry. The guy who was taking my order seemed a little clueless and I actually had to tell them what did and did not go with my sandwich and he kept trying to add a drink and say it was included but it clearly was charging me. He fixed it and then I had to wait for 20 minutes for one sandwich to go. It was ridiculous and it made me late for the rest of my day this location is no good.

Jerry G.

Yelp
There were gnats and flies in the dining room. The men's restroom was filthy. I had the Southwest Caesar salad, I thought it was overpriced for what you get. Ajax would fix the dirty sink in the restroom.
google avatar

Jill G.

Yelp
I've always enjoyed the food at the near bread but this location needs to be careful of their customer relations. Just now in the drive-through the associate didn't turn his mic off and was complaining about the customer who just went through on. Saying he hated it when they did separate orders. Then when I got to the window the manager talking to the other employees loudly said "I think I need to call the exterminator. We have mice!" This location needs to be careful and look at things from the guests' perspective.

Yelp
Things are continuing to improve. Dining area is super clean, pastries and breads are full (aside from a few holes due to selling out for the day -- totally acceptable) I still find it humorous how many patrons turn the dining areas into their office spaces. *shrug* As long as they are purchasing items while here, guess the company cannot protest. When I grab breakfast in the mornings there are so many delicious options! My new "gotta-get" is the breakfast wrap: chipotle chicken, egg, & avocado. I know I cannot miss with the fresh, warm soufflés available is several versions: 4-cheese, ham & Swiss, spinach & artichoke, and one with bacon . I also like the bacon, egg, and cheese bagel sandwich -- but I ask for a French toast bagel instead, so I experience an entire breakfast in one bite. Today I loaded up on cookies to take home. There's a new s'mores bar, so we will see how that tastes when I get home. I was sent specifically for the Kitchen Sink cookies, but I also added more The oatmeal w/ berries looks delicious, and the confectioners sugar dusted on lemon drop cookies looks so inviting. They are pricey, in my opinion, but dang they taste so good! Lastly, I really like their craft teas and drinks. #1 non-carbonated. #2 different sweetness levels available. My favorites are anything with hibiscus and the Orange-carrot-turmeric. Just a refreshing change from the soda pop culture.

Yelp
We ordered a "B O W L" of soup and they didn't fill it to the top. It looked like we ordered a cup of soup instead of a bowl, really disappointing.

Yelp
1.)slow service ordering 2:)all the tables were dirty 3:)order came out super slow 4:)employees did not seem enthusiastic at all

Yelp
We were skeptical, given the reviews, but still had great, quick service! Very friendly staff, delicious hot food and coffee. We were headed to another restaurant but this was closer so we gave it a try & enjoyed our breakfast!

Yelp
This is the worst Panera around the Tulsa area. They never have bagels, or anything in stock. I just went in to get a coffee that I have with my coffee subscription and a side of toast with avocado on it. Which I KNOW they can do because my sister use to work there. It's Panera, they can customize anything. But they told me that they couldn't. On top of that, they were all extremely rude. I stood at the counter for a few minutes before getting service. Then when I did, a worker came up and acted like it was such an inconvenience that she was having to do her job and take my order. I looked at her and I said "Oh, you ready for me?" And she rolled her eyes and said "Mhm". This place is a joke and it's gotten trashy.

Yelp
We have tried this Panera Bread several times over the years and have never been really happy with the service. Today was the last straw, we ordered lunch for two other co-workers and myself, went through the drive-thru to pick up the order. When we arrived back at work my soup was only 1/4 of the way full, and even though I ordered and purchased the lentil quinoa chicken bowl, this time it did not contain any chicken, and the taste was off. Another order of soup was cold. When I called to talk to the manager and asked if they could make this right I was told they were sorry but they could not do anything to help with today's mistake, they could give me a free meal in the future. I was not looking for a free handout, I was looking for some customer service, it was not received. I do not recommend the Panera on Detroit.

Yelp
The bagels are fair. Sandwiches way too pricey, but good eatin. Good servers. Linda was my all time favorite. If anyone can get a hold of her, have her pm me here. She left about a year ago. I would hire her. Thx. Managers need to smile more and interface with customers , like Promenade Mall. A simple "hi, thanks for coming. I'm Bucky the manager. If I can help, let me know."
google avatar

Michelle R.

Yelp
I have liked Panera Bread in the past. I have't had any problems. I love the warm rice bowls that are available and the green tea is my favorite but when I order the rice bowl with an apple in the drive-thru I ask if they could slice it for me, they say "OK", I pay for it and look in the bag and it's a whole apple! How hard is it to slice an apple? They give me a plastic knife to cut it but sometimes they break. I have ordered on inside and they slice it there but not in the drive-thru window. Why? I don't even mind pulling up and waiting until they cut it. I'm going to eat it right away so the apple won't brown but it's just the idea of it. I feel like they lied to me by saying "OK" then not doing it. At least, retrain employees to do as the consumer asks or say "We can't do that".

Yelp
Panera Bread as whole seems to continue to go down hill. This location is no exception. Anytime we do mobile order, especially for pastries or breads, they are always out, and they sub something cheaper than what you paid for. They need to start having their app show they are out OR just don't offer mobile order if you can't do it right. On top of that, the portions at Panera restaurants are just pathetic. 1 piece of meat and 1/2 a slice a cheese does not constitute a $9 price tag. Also, they recently changed their pastry danish wheel. We used to get these for family get togethers or holidays, and it was great. Now it's 90% bread and hardly any filling. I don't know what keeps these places going, honestly, but until they start re-upping the quality to what it once was, i won't be going back.

Yelp
I felt like being lazy and ordered food to be delivered even though I only live 2.5 miles from the store...After waiting almost an hour from the time it left the store I called and was placed on hold for a manager. Manager of course never answered. They were "kind enough" to cancel the order but offered to have it still delivered...soup that's been in someone's car for over an hour sounds like great customer service. Will definitely be taking my business elsewhere, I recommend you do as well.

Jeff C.

Yelp
Usually love gong to Panera for a nice meal, but this was the first time we ordered to go. Was very disappointed in the size of my dish...the Bowl was a full sized meal bowl and was only about half full, and the fruit cup ordered for a side was around half full as well. When dining in the portions seem much larger...disappointing.
google avatar

Mary C.

Yelp
Like to stop here on my way from Tulsa to NSU for a toasted cream cheese plain bagel. Drive thru attendant was nice and friendly at getting my food. I received it barely warm with no knife! Really Paneta bread lady, really I fought through eating it hard as a mf!
google avatar

Crystal C.

Yelp
Pros: I order through the app and my food is ready for me to pick up at the time I specify. It sits on a shelf, I don't have to talk to anyone when I walk in. That's wonderful. Always get the tomato soup with tomato mozzarella pesto panini. Good apple bagel, chocolate croissant, and sugar cookies. Cons: every time I order green tea online and then go to pick it up, it's wrong! Plain green tea. No sweetener. When I order it in person, always correct.
google avatar

Yelp
4/5 stars; not the driver's or the store's fault.. Panera app for the driver took him 4 miles South of my work place. The driver googled the correct location & headed back, so, the Panera app showed it would take longer & longer for the order to arrive. Great job on getting better directions!! The food tastes awesome & is still fresh!! I apologize for putting a "right" turn, in stead of the correct "left" turn.. :-) I will order again (fair warning.. lol..)

Yelp
One of my favorite places in BA to hang and use WiFi. Even when they are full it's a nice place to eat. I have come here since they opened.

Yelp
I won't be back. We have been going to this Panera for about ten years. The last couple of times the food quality was not good, the orders were wrong and when it was brought to the employees attention they were argumentative. The dining room was filthy. My wife and I were trying to have a nice conversation and the teen staff was having a horseplay party. This was at approximately 7:30pm last night.

Tanya B.

Yelp
I ordered a Strawberry Poppyseed Salad with Chicken, which I hadn't had in years. I used to LOVE it. Well, this one was tasteless. It was made with iceburg lettuce (or at least very low-quality romaine) that tasted old, there were no mandarin oranges on the salad as per the menu, and the almonds were not toasted. The dressing tasted watered down and flavorless. Won't be going back. $11+ down the drain.

Gab G.

Yelp
Waited at the drive thru speaker for over 15min before anyone spoke to me. And the girl who finally took my order was very rude, I was understanding for the wait considering they may have been slammed but no apology at all on there end and I proceeded to asked if they had tomato soup still (since it's seasonal) and she cut me off from talking with "is that what you want?!" -so sassy, I was taken back! probably one of the worst Panera's I have ever been to and I come from STL where they were started, i have been going to Panera for as long as I can remember and I'm still in shock that I waited for service for over 15 min?! At the speaker! The car in front had already got there food and left? And the customer service was beyond rude, I will not be back. I got home and they forgot the baguette? Not impressed by this Panera
google avatar

Lana H.

Yelp
I went here and ate today after work. I was a bit disappointed that they no longer have roast beef but I ordered a roasted turkey sandwich today with some AWESOME chicken noodle soup. The sandwich was delicious too. I would have given it five stars if I didn't feel like I was seriously overcharged though. What had bothered me was the half sandwich and soup cost me $10.50 because she rang me up for a fancier avocado turkey sandwich minus the avocado and whatever else extra was on it since I guess she had no other way to ring up just a turkey sandwich with lettuce, tomato, onions, and spicy mustard. Other than that, it was clean and the employees were really nice. The food is AMAZING!!

M J.

Yelp
This is by far the worst Panera location in the greater Tulsa area. Unfortunately, it's also right outside my neighborhood, and therefore the location I frequent the most. I should really make the effort to drive across town to another location. In 2017 Panera was purchased by JAB Holdings, a German company headed up by the Reimann family, whose ancestors were big Adolf Hitler fans and had Nazi ties. As a result, everything is changing (which obviously isn't the fault of local employees). Beverages are no longer made fresh, and popular food items are disappearing from the menu, which itself is constantly changing. Employees at my location are clearly struggling to keep up, and failing miserably. Every time I visit there is a problem with my order. Every. Time. It doesn't matter if I'm in-store, ordering from a live person, or using Rapid Pick-Up. The myriad ways the employees at the Broken Arrow location can screw up a simple order of one item continue to astound me. The manager should be fired, and replaced with someone who actually knows how to run a restaurant.

Linsey L.

Yelp
The employees were very rude when we ordered our food. After sitting down we were given very many side eyes and rude looks. We overheard employees talking about marijuana and selling such substances. After leaving the shift supervisor started us down and seemed to be talking rudely about us. Needless to say we will not be visiting this panera location again.
google avatar

G B.

Yelp
Didn't like this Panera Bread. Mgr didn't look welcoming; never smiled or greeted guest. Workers were very nice but manager didn't give a welcoming feel. That's important. Facility needs more functioning outlets too. I'm a frequent Panera Bread customer in all states that I visit.
google avatar

Cheri S.

Yelp
I love Panera. I'm happy that the new location on 71st in front of Lowes is an instant hit. But beware when you order in the drive thru. Check your bag before you pull from the window. I've had this a lot in the last 10 Days bc I just got out of the hospital and soup is about all I can have. It's yet to be a correct order. Croutons forgotten all but once on tomato soup, onion soup only had the cheese once out of 4 times... more examples but you get the idea. Check you order while you're there. It's so annoying to discover when you get home.
google avatar

Christina H.

Yelp
Great food, horrible people skills from the management Kerry. I'll take the extra 15 min drive to Promenade for great service & a smile.
google avatar

Michael S.

Yelp
Come here every Thursday morning with two buddies from church to talk to fellowship. The staff is always polite, fast with our order or coffee. They even know us by name now!

Robin A.

Yelp
It's a great lunch spot. Very clean dining room, friendly service, better food than other Panera locations in our opinion.
google avatar

Jameson G.

Yelp
Always great food but the changed the grilled cheese and it isnt as good as it use to be. But usually hreat food
google avatar

Pamela N.

Yelp
I love this place! I have a lot of food allergies but they are always so considerate and go the extra mile to make sure my food is safe. And their app is so easy and convenient. I can go through the food options, omit anything that I'm allergic to, add other options if needed and then my order is ready by the time I get to the restaurant. I will continue to eat at this Panera. Love it!
google avatar

Kassy B.

Yelp
If I could give this Panera Bread 0 stars, I would. Every time I have gone to this one, I have had an issue. They either are out of food, or they say they stop serving breakfast at 1030 on a weekend. Their websites say 1100 on weekends so I'm assuming they just want to lose business. I will not go to this Panera anymore. Their management is ridiculous and the other issues I've had involve them messing up my order countless times. It's pathetic.
google avatar

Mary C.

Yelp
The lady taking my order in the drive thru was so rude. She didn't answer any of my questions and just rudely gave me my total. So I didn't even get a drink don't worry I won't be thirsty. Won't be eating here anymore.

Graham P.

Yelp
They are out of at least one item literally every time I go there. In the last month alone, they have been out of oatmeal, chocolate chip cookies, broccoli cheddar soup, French baguettes, and the soufflés. I'm not exaggerating. Every. Time. Other locations do not seem to have this problem. If you're lucky, they will tell you they are out of the requested item while you're still ordering. Many times, however, they will wait until you get to the window. My favorite time was when they told me they didn't have what I ordered for the Mrs. after I got to the window. Pulled around, made a phone call to see what else the Mrs. wanted, pulled back through the drive thru, only for them to have closed early. Update. Add macaroni and cheese, arugula, and sandwich bread to the list of things this location is out of.

Tish D.

Yelp
This place has gone downhill significantly in the past couple of years. The worst customer service. The past two visits, it's all I can do to get someone to wait on me, even as they standing at the register! (Actually had an employee look right at me and walk away) My to-go order was over ten minutes late today, despite ordering it three hours ahead of time.

Sue S.

Yelp
Went through the drive through to purchase a loaf of bread. The smart people of Panera have decided to halt the making of bread loafs to sell during the Pandemic. Someone should change this policy ASAP. Why not increase your production and help the customers that are in need. Better yet make bread loafs and donate to the local food banks.

Ashley F.

Yelp
This Panera used to be so good. I keep trying it hoping it will be better. Nope. This last time I ordered the Pick Two. Tomato soup & grilled cheese. The soup was cold & served with no croutons. My grilled cheese was. slice of cheese on 2 pieces of nasty white bread. Oh and they were out of baguettes as a side. Unfortunately I won't be back to this location.
