Shake Shack Restaurateur Danny Meyer Is Investing in Panera Bread | Eater

"Set to go public under the Panera Brands umbrella, this large fast-casual chain (more than 2,000 locations) is known for its fan-favorite broccoli and cheddar soup and generally wholesome, on-the-go menu. An acquisition group tied to Union Square Hospitality Group will make Danny Meyer and his company a cornerstone partner, with Meyer named lead independent director — a role that signals active involvement in shaping the chain’s future. Advocates hope his model of “enlightened hospitality” could raise labor standards in a sector where wages are low and workers often lack protections, while skeptics worry that applying a fine-dining–informed ethos to fast food may be unrealistic: expecting short-term, often transient staff to deliver joy-driven service risks placing unfair burdens on workers unless structural changes (wages, safety, agency) accompany cultural shifts. Observers also note the difference between building a concept from scratch and joining an entrenched operation, and debate whether an employee-first promise will translate into concrete improvements beyond livable pay — or into new consumer-facing trends such as experimenting with regional items like St. Louis–style bagels." - Elazar Sontag

I’m honestly really disappointed with the recent quality of the drinks at this Panera location—especially the Strawberry Basil Lemonade Fresca. It used to be my absolute favorite drink: refreshing, flavorful, and perfectly balanced. I would come here almost daily just to enjoy it. However, over the past two weeks, the drink has tasted incredibly watered down. It’s lost all its flavor and now just tastes like slightly sweetened water. It’s honestly unpleasant, and it makes me really sad because this used to be a daily treat I looked forward to. What makes this even more unfortunate is that this has always been my favorite Panera branch. The staff are genuinely kind and provide great service. But sadly, unless the drink quality improves, I’ll have to start going to a different location. I really hope management addresses this soon.

Google
This is the worst of the Paneras I’ve been to. It has almost no staff seemingly and the staff that was there was really snippy when I asked how to get my cup because I didn’t see it at the pickup. You have to order at the kiosk and there isn’t someone at a register. I also watched the staff get visibly frustrated when someone wasn’t sure how to purchase gift cards. It was also FREEZING inside, to the point that another customer asked how I was able to work there without a jacket. I ended up having to leave because it was so cold, and I’m pretty sure the other customer did as well. It’s weirdly sterile, and the environment seems like it doesn’t want you to study or hangout. There weren’t staff around to help with the outside patio umbrella. Plus, the food is extremely expensive! So the combination of the staff and environment and the very high prices makes it a very meh place to be.

Google
My wife and I came in at 8:15 on a Sunday and they were very busy which is expected. Took us 20-25 minutes to get our 2 sandwiches and 2 coffees. BUT the team here was rocking through orders and trying their best and our food and drink tasted good. It honestly seems this store just needs more staff to handle the load of all the orders. To the staff thanks for pushing orders out as fast as possible, I think I saw like 4-5 people working. To corporate or whoever owns the store put more people on a shift to help with the influx of orders. You’ll have a lot less complaints.

Tara

Google
Absolutely the rudest employees work here. The “shift manager” must hate coming to work. She was the worst of them all. No signs of leadership anywhere. Nobody acknowledges you when you come into the restaurant. Customer service is not provided here. Never going back! And it’s dirty as hell

Natalie Fisher

Google
First time at this location and will definitely go out of my away to make a stop at another location in the future 😅 Attempted to place an order via their drive thru a you pick two plus a kids turkey was told that they’re unable to add veggies to the turkey sandwich…like not that it would be an up charge which would have been fine but literally adding lettuce and tomato couldn’t be done. lol Ultimately I thought it was a training gap but come to find out the mgr herself said no modifications are done for kids sandwiches. Wild I was willing to pay $20 for an adult and child to get healthy ingredients but if they can’t even make it to order than you’re better off going to another fast food chain that has plenty of lettuce and tomato to go around 😂

Dave Scoular

Google
When there's nobody else in line at this location you'll probably get good service. They never pull anyone forward, so you'll sit in line for 20 minutes because they seem to only staff this store with 3 people at a time. If you do happen to order ahead, be forewarned, they'll randomly turn off coffee ordering for drive thru and pickup if they're busy (think 7-8am). No sense of a care atmosphere inside either, entirely an "EAT IT AND GET OUT" fast food place.

destiny wilton

Google
Went through the drive through- told me I had a free meal on my perks- turns out it’s instead spend $10 buy one get one free. Ordered a smoothie and they do the same thing every time- you pay $20 for your kids sized portions and the smoothie comes out no where near the top. Manager lady hands it to me and I look confused- she looks deer in headlights back?? I’m like yeah this is just really not filled… says nothing. What even is this place anymore.

Hannah Schweiss

Google
So it feels like you're in the kitchen when you're eating. But the light is good. It's difficult to get to and people drive through the parking lot like it's a 30mph road so beware. Not Panera's fault but they chose a poor location

Aidenn W.

Yelp
Still good, but asked for my bagel toasted(it wasn't). Would've been better if it was. Also service is really slow, took 20 minutes for 5 cars.
google avatar

Jake E.

Yelp
After months of boycotting due to our order being wrong 100% of the time. We decided to try again. Order was all there! Delivery was quick! We were riding high on cloud nine... and then this... $9 for bread, a little egg and 9 tiny pieces of steak (I counted). I just don't get it.
google avatar

Melissa S.

Yelp
Service is horrible in the drive thru. No matter what time of day even if it's not busy. They make you pull up and wait 5+ minutes. Not including the time you had to wait when you paid. Waiting that long for a $10 1/2 salad that is probably premade or takes a few seconds to make is not cool. Y'all Raise the prices, give less food and top it off slow service.
google avatar

Stephanie S.

Yelp
I'm not sure why I haven't learned my lesson. I still agree with my original post. Today, I stopped by because I wanted a breakfast sandwich and coffee. I got their new Bacon Double Take breakfast sandwich - which boasts double bacon. Well I got a half piece and a quarter piece of bacon. Over $7. I decided to call - the manager was apologetic and refunded the sandwich. But shame on me for giving them another chance.

Carson K.

Yelp
This place is so good for where it is located there's so many cars around, but you can't even hear them great environment and for being a small place. It feels MASSIVE. The food was great and the service was also good
google avatar

Michael C.

Yelp
What's the deal, had the Italiano today actually very good flavor but as in the old Wendy's commercial "where"s the meat", scanty proportions more bread than anything, can't believe for the price you can't put on a few more slices of salami! Panera, or I still call it St Louis Bread is trying but still lost regarding what makes a customer happy! Please learn fast!! I still like your bagels and bear claws!!

Destiny W.

Yelp
Pretty sure I've left a review before at this Panera... but the problems don't stop. Wait 25 min in the drive thru. No issue. Finally had a $5 off a pick two- order simply a tomato soup and Mac. I check my bag after I start to take off and see potato soup... no biggie it happens. I go in and tell them they miss heard and wanted tomato. The girl behind the kitchen says yeah we've been out of tomato- then the guy proceeds to hand me back this rustic potato soup. That's it- no hey let me refund that, coupon for next time, do you want something else, a cookie- ANYTHING... Update after eating the potato soup and it sucks- not tomato and will never be tomato.

Yelp
This Bread Co trip didn't go well. On the plus side, my steak and white cheddar sandwich (sans onions) was really good. But, that's about all that went right. I'm dinging stars for giving me a plain croissant, when I asked for an almond croissant. A long wait time. A super long line when I went to exchange the croissant (understaffed). And, due to supply chain disruptions, some of the fruits on my wife's strawberry fields salad were missing. At most Panera locations I go to, customer service is really on point. They're fast, even in the face of heavy traffic. But, this location doesn't measure up.
google avatar

Steven M.

Yelp
I mean it was alright. Nothing to write home about. I'm basing my 4 out of 5 according to other SLBC's I've been to in the past. The staff wasn't the most welcoming. The food was a little sub-par because mine was lacking in meat and wet. It was the toasted steak and cheese. The bread was a little doughy near the end because of how wet it was. As far as cleanliness it was up there with what you'd expect. Short and sweet.
google avatar

Kristin A.

Yelp
Panera, You've lost me as a customer. It's not your employees, they are fantastic. However, paying almost 13.00 for a steak sandwich that has a pathetic few thin slices of beef and 99% bread isn't worth it. Just take it off your menu. Don't waste people's money. Try to make people happy. This did not make me happy.
google avatar

Kaitlyn S.

Yelp
Honestly, this location is terrible. Could the employees maybe stop having their friends come through the drive-thru just to chit chat?? And then proceed to screw up the orders of paying customers? I get it's just Panera guys, but cmon have one ounce of professionalism.
google avatar

Jailynn M.

Yelp
There food is super amazing! I had a brownie from there it was pretty soft I loved the softness also the service was great.

Lori B.

Yelp
It took almost 20 minutes for them to get a yogurt parfait. Ridiculous! It wasn't even busy!

Dave Y.

Yelp
Old location not even a mile away used to be very spacious and relaxed, however with the new location it is impossible to get a seat with the limited seating and the whole process feels very rushed.

Diane M.

Yelp
Last time at Panera! Soup was cold for both our meals. Tables were dirty. No one moves very fast and no one cleaned tables the whole time we were there. Poorly managed. Panera so sad you used to be sooo good!

Maria C.

Yelp
New location is HORRIBLE. can only get in and get out in one direction. Will not be returning so annoyed with this. Not worth the time and gas for reheated food. Old location was better!!! I mean seriously we were driving in circles

Justin T.

Yelp
New location is horrible. Very hard to get in and out on Lindbergh. Old location used to be a relaxed atmosphere and felt cozy. Now it feels like a fast food place. Service was slow.

Evie J.

Yelp
Changing review because the location is so difficult to get in and out of. Dangerous to make some of those turns on Lindbergh given how people are driving.
google avatar

Brian S.

Yelp
Ordered from this location on Uber Eats and swung by to grab it. Food was ready in a timely manner. My broccoli cheddar soup was delicious. The little side salad I had was also delicious. My friend got the cheese flat bread pizza thing and said it was great. Can definitely see myself ordering from here in the future.

Yelp
I enjoy a meal at Panera but I will not be visiting this location for quite a while. They seem to be infested with fruit flies. We had to wave our hands over our food just to take our first bites. We moved tables thinking maybe they were just in the back by the beverage center. Nope they were at the opposite side as well. When I told an employee about the issue she said,"yes we know we are working on the problem." I threw most of my food away and my kids took theirs out to the car to finish. Where is the health department?!? This place should get a B or C for cleanliness if you can't even eat your meal without waving your hands around. Disgusting!

Judy K.

Yelp
Female that took my order acted put out with my questions & was argumentative when I explained the problem with my order. Chris, the manager, intervened & resolved the issue.

Dan M.

Yelp
Really bad attitude and overall service. Out of croutons and other stuff. I will not come back here

Rebecca B.

Yelp
If I could give zero stars I would. I went into this location to use my gift card and the associate said, You don't have any money left on your gift card. I knew I did but ended paying using my own money. I was really embarrassed because I knew I had a balance left to use. When I got home, I called the number on the back of the gift card. Guess what??? I had a balance left. I tried calling the location to talk to a manager but they hung up and didn't answer the phone. I tried calling again but the phone kept ringing. I will never return to this location. Very poor customer service.
google avatar

Kevin J.

Yelp
Just went to this store to eat in. Got our food and we were overwhelmed by gnats. It was disgusting. Told the manager got my money back. He told me how much money they were spending to try to get rid of them. Then a lady and her husband come up to the counter with Mac and cheese and a dead gnat in it. She tell me she was in there three months ago and they had gnats then. Shut the place down and fumigate it.
google avatar

Laura J.

Yelp
They have a fruit fly problem. My son and I changed tables a couple times and killed about 4 of them.
google avatar

Eunice B.

Yelp
This chain is doing its best to eliminate paying staff. You get to place your own order, pay for it, pick up your own food, get your own drink and bus your own table and yes they (the kiosk) even asks for a tip. However the one star rating is for quality of food or rather great toppings on brown old lettuce. Why pretend to be healthy?
google avatar

Cassaundra H.

Yelp
I revised this from my last review because I hate leaving bad reviews. Over all I will bump it up to 3 stars because there have been some improvements with new staff, I love the franchise and the food/drinks are consistently good. I love Bread Co. but this location is not my favorite.

Blaize S.

Yelp
Terrible service they mess my order up and tell me it's my fault the order was completely wrong I even talked to them on the phone to make sure I had ordered what I wanted they say yes which I clearly could tell they were not trying to listen. Call the manager she says I ordered it wrong when in fact they changed my online order.
google avatar

Tanya M.

Yelp
I love the caramel iced latte and the iced green tea. the sandwiches and salads are usually very good. I do wish that bread co offered more sugar free flavors. i also do not like when i go into a business wanting to sit and eat. then, have to get it to go because every table is taken by people and computers that have long since finished there meal. I will always go to bread co.
google avatar

Tina S.

Yelp
It was cold and rainy outside so I thought a stop at Bread Co sounded good for lunch The place was busy but I did get to the counter quickly Ryan took my order He didn't ask if I had a reward card or if I wanted to add thing to my order When the buzzer sounded I thought I would kick back and enjoy It was to go I did not order it that way Hey Ryan I got the message Get the heck out
google avatar

Travis F.

Yelp
I like pretty much all bread co (aka Panera) they have a great selection and their deserts (Cobblestones) are GREAT! Always have a great experience here!
google avatar

Edis S.

Yelp
I live near this Panera bread and I have phoned in my orders before I get there for years now to be told that now I can't phone in my order without a debit card is just ridiculous the customer service has gone completely down at this store I'm very unsatisfied.

Angela M.

Yelp
Horrible service at the cashier. Name was Pam. She was rude, no personality, didn't answer questions and ignored others. It seemed like she could hear okay. Food was good as always. Service horrible.
google avatar

Jana S.

Yelp
This is by far my favorite BreadCo. All of the staff are very friendly, and the restaurant is always clean.
google avatar

Octavius L.

Yelp
Prices are getting way out of hand, 10 dollars for a pick two, come on. Your getting close to being on my boycott list if only the broccoli cheddar soup wasn't so good.
google avatar

Selma J.

Yelp
I stopped in one morning for a breakfast sandwich and a drink. Got to the counter and ordered what I wanted, my drink was the frozen caramel. As always, the associate at the register asked if I had a rewards card and so I entered my phone number for this. I knew I had rewards on my account prior to getting there. One of my rewards was a free drink of my choice... notice OF MY CHOICE. Before I went to the location, I had started an online order and added the same drink to my cart and my reward for the free drink was applied. However, I decided to just stop in at this location instead of ordering online since I was leaving the house later than I expected. The cashier tried to add my reward to my purchase and it wouldn't work, so she brought it to the attention of the manager on duty (or supervisor) not sure what her badge said. She tried to get it to work and it still wouldn't. I heard the manager say herself, "this is the second time this has happened." And then went on to tell me that my reward couldn't be applied because SHE believed that the drink that I was ordering didn't fall under the reward, yet it said drink of my choice and she even read that herself. I even told her about how my online app allowed the same reward to be applied to the same drink and she still didn't bother to override it. I told her to just not worry about it because I didn't have time to bother with it. In my opinion, she as the supervisor or manager or whatever she is should have did an override for my purchase to apply the reward, instead she didn't want to be bothered with it and I ended up paying full price for my drink. The cashier herself said to me after all of this, "I don't understand why we didn't just do it." The cashiers and associates at this location are great. This supervisor or manager not so much. Not thrilled with this customer service at all.

Ginny S.

Yelp
Great service and food selection at this restaurant. I take advantage of the app ordering service and it's always quick and accurate. Love the staff, some of who have worked there for years.

Jess N.

Yelp
Food was great but they gave us a dirty spoon and when asked if it was already put into the mac and cheese they gave attitude.

Cate H.

Yelp
First, the parking situation is awful. Second, when I walked in I had to wait in a long line (35 minutes) for my meal. After waiting that long, I waited a ridiculous amount of time for my food to get here. Also, who else thinks it's crazy they don't bring food out to you? Rude. When i finally got my food, i was disturbed to find bugs in my salad. That is extremely insanitary and I will never come back here again. Also it is expensive. I must say, the McAlister's deli not too far down the road is a much better option than this establishment.

Jacob E.

Yelp
Food is good, but there is a GIANT problem with delivery. Apparently they stop accepting online orders after 730 but they STILL TAKE YOUR MONEY. They set up the food for the next day at 11am. Hey BREAD CO, IF YOU STOP TAKING ORDERS AT 730 THEN YOU SHOULD CONSIDER STOP TAKING PEOPLES MONEY TOO. And when they cancel the order your money is on hold for at least 24hours depending on your bank. Huge fail PANERA, HUGE FAIL.

Caroline B.

Yelp
Some of the staff members are absolutely amazing and other are absolutely horrible - it's a coin flip. Same with the food - one girl notoriously burned bagels, but other staff members were super generous with portions. I lived around the corner and ate here and ordered take out from this location at least three times a week for two years. Sometimes they fudged my order, but it's never anything they aren't eager to rectify and always offer me a complimentary treat for my troubles.
google avatar

Kyle K.

Yelp
Picked up bagels here to take into work. I just wanted a basic mix of a dozen bagels. I went early in the morning, so I expected a bit of a line. It was a smallish line, but it still seemed to take FOREVER for them to get my bagels, slice them, and get them to me. I really had not expected that, which was disappointing considering the fact that they know that's going to be their busiest time of day! The bagels themselves were decent - like I've come to expect from these Panera/Einstein-type places. I was also a little disappointed that in the past they have included some bags to keep the bagels fresh after the first day, but they didn't do that this time. We at work had to search around for a way to do that since we didn't finish the whole dozen I had bought.

Linda K.

Yelp
Been going here 3-4 days/week for 20 years and the service has deteriorated horribly! Bagels are never hot! [If you get a toasted bagel, who doesn't want it warm???] Coffee is often lukewarm. Often out of hot water! They used to let regulars buy a Post-Dispatch paper at reduced price. Now it depends on the person taking your order. Some give you a discount and some won't. Regardless, they should be consistent! Last time I was in, they charged a friend who goes once/week 80 cents for a Sunday paper, but charged me $2.50! I'm so done with this place! Tesson Ferry and Sunset Hills Panera are SOOOOOOO much better!

David P.

Yelp
Worst customer service ever. Surly manager and front staff taking orders are just plain unfriendly and down right rude. It shows all the way from the manager down who couldn't even get an order right yesterday morning without repeated attempts. She even told me to stop ordering at one point. This is the manager who can't even take an order. Today ordered three pastries and only two made it in the bag. Didn't find out till I left and returned home. The guy who took my order was just plain obnoxious and not even one smile. Not sure if you ever want to go to this location. One bright thing did happen--a patron came rushing to open the doors for me. I was completely taken aback by this--I thanked her and she said if she ever needs help getting something in the grocery store from a higher shelf that I would oblige. I said absolutely.

Karen P.

Yelp
Today I got a rapid pick-up order and my co-worker picked it up for me. I have always loved their food and have never really had a problem with It before, but today when my co-worker brought my food back there was a big, long, black hair on top of my soup and all over the loose bread inside the bag. I called asking if they could just deliver another bowl of soup for me and they said they could not do that. Last week some other co-worker had a problem with getting the wrong order and they delivered her meal to our work. But I thought it was funny this week they could not do that for me. So when I returned the meal the manager, Kegan, just gave me a new order, did not try to compensate me having to leave work and come up to fix their mistake and did not ever apologize. I was very disappointed, because I worked for Bread co. for 2 years so I know how well we are supposed to treat the customers. I just wish the manager would have been apologetic for his employees mistake, because ultimately that does come back on him as the manager.

Katie R.

Yelp
I love breadco but I'm very disappointed in there menu choices. I went there once sometimes twice a week for the pick 2. Then they took off my pasta from the pick 2. So I've been there 0 times since. Only because my total went up a whole lot more and it was somewhere to go for a meal special kind of deal. Another resteaunt leaving me heartbroken.

Era J.

Yelp
I visited this restaurant while traveling through the St. Louis area. The entire staff were very friendly and helpful.

Kip G.

Yelp
i used to go to this BreadCo all the time. I loved getting breakfast and coffee while doing work in the mornings. But the service and quality has deteriorated over the years to where I've finally given up and will no longer visit this location. The other's are great, but the South County location near the mall is just terrible.
