Be prepared...unnecessarily long review of chain restaurant in 3...2...1....
Of all the Bread Co's/Panera's I've been in, this was certainly the weirdest layout. Aside from that odd but accurate comment, I will now wax philosophic about how I feel about what Panera has become over the years. I can't honestly tell you the last time I sat down and ate in a Panera. Sometime when I was in Chicago, I'd imagine. In any case, upon today's visit, I was surprised by a few changes that I can only attribute to the fact that my visits to Bread Co, if there were a line to chart such an inane piece of data, peaked when I was in high school when it was still St. Louis Bread Co and I was in St. Louis and have witnessed a steep decline in the many years since then. When I was in Chicago, I often frequented Corner Bakery over Panera, not so much by food preference but more so by convenience (one was a block closer to school and work, and my school pals wanted to go there more than Panera, so yeah).
So, why bring up my visits to Corner Bakery in a review of Panera. Well, frankly, if you would have completely eliminated the color scheme of the panera I was in--and the signage for that matter--I probably would've thought I was in a Corner Bakery. Little things (employees bringing the food to your table instead of calling your name, while making sure to take the number and number holder that identifies your ticket; bussing your table for you; the expansion of the bakery items) just screamed "we're trying to out-corner Corner Bakery," but I must say that I liked the changes.
I also like some of the new salad options, including the hidden menu items, although I hate the concept of hidden menus that are clearly not hidden. The chicken hummus power bowl is filling and delicious. I could eat that like once a week. Really, I could. I like that you can get a salad with salmon. I like that they have a good variety of salads period. I like that they still have my old standbys if I don't feel like a salad. I'm looking at you You Pick Two the Asiago roast beef sandwich and the vegetarian black bean soup. I've been eating that soup for like a decade now (basically since they removed the cream cheese potato soup from the menu, and since I realized that I could probably eat three bowls of the black bean for the calorie count of the cream cheese potato soup). The prices are definitely a little higher than typical fast food-type fare, but the food tastes better, and you can order relatively healthfully or not if you don't want to.
So, yeah. This is like basically the same place it's always been in some regards while totally being different. And it's like a good lunch spot and stuff...with an annoying parking lot. The end.
