Panzón - Review - Soma - San Francisco - The Infatuation

"While the burritos at Panzón in SoMa don't quite stand up to the many other fantastic ones in SF, they are a solid option in a neighborhood that’s largely burrito-less. Theirs are filled to each tortilla’s capacity limit, but the meats and other fillings aren’t as flavorful as those of the city’s institutions. That said, this Mexican restaurant has figured out the best way to cater to the neighborhood’s tech-working crowd. The narrow dining room is flanked by a long bar where staff members are constantly taking orders, wrapping burritos, and pressing quesadillas. This ensures that every order is packed and ready to take back to your desk in minutes. If you have some time to spare before your next meeting, there are a handful of four-top tables inside, otherwise, there’s plenty of public outdoor seating nearby. Food Rundown Burritos Burritos make up a bulk of the menu—they’re decent and will keep you full until you clock out for the day. We suggest going for The Panzón that comes with rice, beans, lettuce, cheese, guacamole, sour cream, and a signature slightly tangy sauce. Always go for the chicken—the other meat options like the carnitas are underseasoned and a little tough. While chips and salsa are technically a few extra dollars, waitstaff will usually throw in a bag or two for free. photo credit: Patrick Wong Quesadilla A bit imbalanced. Despite a generous amount of whatever protein you choose, it all gets lost in an overflow of cheese. It gets the job done, but we’d get the burrito over this. photo credit: Patrick Wong" - Patrick Wong

Food: Delicious and flavorful—authentic taste with generous portions. Service: Friendly and attentive; they made me feel welcome from the moment I walked in. Atmosphere: Cozy and lively, great for a casual meal with friends or a solo treat. Overall: A great spot! I’ll definitely be back.

I got a Super Burrito on my lunch the other day & got it with Al Pastor meat. I also got it without rice. This was very flavorful! They’re my favorite spot for Mexican food, I’ved tried some of their other dishes like Enchilada’s, Chiles Rellenos, tacos and much more! I thought it was pretty expensive for a burrito, it was ~$18. I have mixed feelings on if I wanna come again, but if I’m ever in the area and craving some Mexican food I’d probably come here!

A hike in a wall, kinda located in an alley. My first time here. It’s a small restaurant, they are counter served kind of like chipotle, you pick what meal you want, pick your protein and add whatever other items you want on it. The food is good, but the guacamole is a little more liquidity than how I want it. (Never had it like that). The staff were friendly. The place was not too busy when we came in. We didn’t have to wait in line too long.

Food was really good, however for the price I feel like it could be served more. Got the burrito and it was a little bit small.

Google
Thank you to Panzón, our office was able to enjoy a farewell meal together. Their rice and beans are incredible and very well flavored. Their staff is extremely kind. I highly recommend ordering from here!

There is only one person I know who makes mole that I love and after trying Panzon’s, I now a place to go to get the same great tasting mole that I love right here in San Francisco. Personally I come all the way from El Cerrito to get this mole. The staff is always very friendly and the pricing is appropriate for the high quality of food they offer.

04.02.2024. The Panzon burrito. 17.50. (carnitas, rice, Panzon beans, guacamole, sour cream, lettuce, cheese, Panzon salsa). Surprisingly yummy. I only say surprising because I didn't know what to expect so my mind was a bit blank. But a good balance of rice to meat to sauce. The burrito was nicely well hydrated (apparently people hate the word moist) and yummy to eat. Smaller than I would expect from a burrito for 18 bucks, so not the most cost effective. But a good eat. 4/5 Definitely better than the Mexican food they cater to the office.

Google
Great food. Wanted to go to Uno Dos but seeing as if you get there after 12pm for lunch you'll be waiting forever. My group and I decided to try Panzon after another colleague of ours spoke very highly. Since it was Good Friday ordered the fish tacos. Very good, and the toppings we're fresh. Good salsa as well. Place is a bit small but good food and service makes up for it.

Yelp
Friendly staff but expensive burrito for a subpar burrito. I wouldn't travel for this place. Dish: - Carne Asada California Burrito ($17.50): would rec skipping California burrito and opting for a regular burrito instead. The fries weren't really fries, just large potato pieces. Unfortunately, the burrito lacked flavor - free side of chips and salsa: salsa was a bit bland Logistics: -no parking available -accepts cards -has plenty of indoor seating -has restroom

Yelp
Ordered two fish tacos, $1.25 worth of tilapia, no beans or rice, total=$19 Terrible.

Yelp
Please do not waste your time money and human experience on this dump of a place. We told the cashier we wanted to add carne in the breakfast burrito ($9), and the addition was a total of $17! Our total amounted to $32 for ONE burrito. Plus, enough sauce for a bowl of soup came out of my burrito....This is not right-- they should have asked if we were okay with the price before charging us because the price wasn't even shown on the screen when we checked out..... horrible experience. And the ladies had NO REMORSE. I am deeply troubled by my experience.

Yelp
3 stars - Panzon offers Mexican food in the FiDi area. To be completely transparent, I didn't find anything special out the food. I thought it was meh. I ordered the Carne Asada Tostada Bowl. Though there are many different ingredients in the tostada bowl, I found that the meal fell flat and was more on the bland side. Also, the tostada was a bit stale. I will say though that their Green Salsa tasted great! Maybe the burritos are a better option?

Yelp
I just tried this place for the first time yesterday. Got the carnitas super burrito, and it was kinda meh. I thought the meat was under seasoned, and there were some tough bites. I checked and have some of the rice, also under seasoned, and the salsa inside was ok, but not too flavorful. Nothing special I'd go back to. Will explore other options near Montgomery Bart!

Vik B.

Yelp
Customer service was great as they were courteous as welcoming, good food especially the fish taco, I also noticed that they have a daily special every day of the week, will be back to try again, I highly recommend them.

Yelp
Shout out to the boss lady for introducing this magical place with the office crew. Breakfast is served all day and you can get any burrito fixins in plate form or make your own burrito as they make it right in front of you. They also have daily specials! It's tucked away on a small street but you'll see their sando board on Market. Don't sleep on this place, it's one of the affordable places around the business area and the most satisfying. It'll take some restraint not to come here every day, it's that unforgettable!

Isaac A.

Yelp
I've tried many different things at this place and I have not found anything that is not good. Tacos are good, the breakfast is good, the burritos are good, and the specials are always good and tend to sell out all the time. My favorite thing here is 100% the mole. There is only one person I know who makes really good mole the way I like it until I went to Panzon. I make out of my way trips here just for that. In addition to the food, the service is always super friendly and very quick.

Yelp
I had a super strong craving for a breakfast burrito. I use to work near here but never tried out Panzon. The breakfast burrito was decent but wasn't amazing. The reason for 2 stars is that the person handling the cashier was also making the burritos with her bare hands. It seemed very unhygenic.
google avatar

Yelp
I've past by this place all the time, but only recently started stopping by. They are able to do made to order tacos, burritos, and quesadillas. The carne asada (beef) and chicken are solid. Staff is very friendly, good amount of seating, and overall flavor is pretty good. My favorite is to get a steak quesadilla, which has just the right thickness, with a good balance of meet and cheese.
google avatar

Angel L.

Yelp
August 2023 3.5 stars rounded up I ordered the chicken enchiladas ($15 w/ tax) and they were decent; however I don't think I would order the enchiladas again. Everyone was efficiently working so the food didn't take too long. There were plenty of tables and chairs for patrons to enjoy their food. I would go back to to try something else like their fish tacos or burritos!
google avatar

Steve D.

Yelp
Ordered a veggie breakfast burrito, the flavor and small size were quite underwhelming. Nothing distinct, no salsas or other options. Convenient location to some nearby offices, feels like a gem find when walking by outside. Have had better in the area.
google avatar

Samantha J.

Yelp
My job's new office is around the corner and was worried I wasn't going to be able to find anything I craveable for lunch, BUT I found it! I got their Panzon Salad which was topped with fresh chicken fajitas. It was so delicious and filling. I look forward to trying their pupusas and burritos!

Yelp
Better than a chain like Chipotle, but not quite up to the standards you'll find in the Mission. Even for the FiDi, I like Orale Orale more. But at the end of the day, a burrito is a burrito, so it's still an A-OK lunch. California Burrito w/ Steak: A go-to fun burrito for me, since the crunch of fries is just more indulgent than rice. It seemed like they made the fries to order, since they yelled to the back right after I placed my order. However, the fries felt a little soggy, like they rushed and undercooked them. The steak, refried beans and creamy filling inside were all nice though. The Volcán /w Carnitas: Essentially it was rice, beans and meat on the inside and everything else on the outside. Because of that configuration, it seemed more rice-heavy than a typical burrito. Like there were some slices that were mostly rice with a bean or two. The creamy sauces on top were nice though. The carnitas was flavorful, but didn't have that nice crunch that some carnitas have. Vegetarian Nachos: They were skimpy on the cheese and overcompensated with the beans. This resulted in nachos that got soggy really quickly. Plus cheese is my favorite part, so I was bummed to find like half the chips didn't have any cheese.

Tanya W.

Yelp
I went to this establishment 3 times trying to give it a chance. The staff is not friendly or welcoming. The first trip I was rushed to order the second I ordered something without egg and they added egg and the third time they added very little meat and cheese so I paid extra for cheese and the meat was not drained it was very greasy. I got a ground beef burrito, a Pelligrino water a small Red Bull for $29.00. Not worth it! The service is bad but at least have good food.

Yelp
FANTASTIC Mexican restaurant in SoMa. I've been searching for a good one and am so happy to have finally found Panzon. The burritos here are so good! I ordered for a team lunch here, and all 20 people really liked their burritos (honestly, a first for me). The guac and salsas are also fantastic. Some other great perks are taco Tuesdays (with a mole option), breakfast burritos, and papusas on Wednesdays!
google avatar

Zach B.

Yelp
They used their bare hands when handling the food. I hoped this was a one-off thing but I saw some other reviews saying the same thing. You just can't do that.
google avatar

Denise C.

Yelp
I wanted to try Panzon when I saw the sign. It had Mexican food and I'm not sure but I had the fish taco for fish friday and it was fun. I had a orange beet carrot juice for $6 or so and it was light. It was downtown by the Chinese dim sum spot. They had seating. I tried it.

Yelp
I come here when I'm looking for a quick bite to eat at work. It's so quick-- I'm literally in and out of this place in under 5 minutes, maybe less. Their store is a little hard to find it if you don't know where it is as Stevenson is almost a little alley. If coming from 2nd street, turn when you see uno dos tacos! I'm not very impressed with their food though. I ordered a chicken super burrito and if I had to describe it in one word it would be average. It has all the normal things that go into a burrito but tasted just like any other burrito. Nothing special about it at all. I would rather eat chipotle or another place for the same price. My total came out to $11, which I guess is pretty standard for lunch in the fidi. Not sure if I'll be back again, #1 benefit of Panzon in my mind is how quick of a bite it is.

Yelp
Hi Panzon, this place is awesome but today was a little upsetting. Order some chicken flautas and waited for my food at the end your chef used his fingers placed my food on the container. It would have been cool if had gloves on but dang I don't thinks that a very good way of sanitize of serving food. Not really sure if I want to go back for a while but the plantains are awesome. Cashier and the rest of your staff are great!
google avatar

Noel O.

Yelp
The food is so flavorful. And the service is always swift and accurate. The location is not open all day, so be sure to get in early for breakfast, or right on time for lunch if you want to enjoy authentic food that will knock your socks off

Arturo H.

Yelp
Good taste, but weird amount of onions and peppers (at least in Shrimp burrito). Off putting amount of onions and peppers.
google avatar

Yelp
I'm a big fan of Panzon for my work lunch! The food is fresh and efficiently put together and the service is so patient! I always order a beef burrito or a steak fajita and am never let down. I hope to try more things at Panzon over the next few months because their specials menu also rotates occasionally! Highly recommend this place if you're looking for a quick place to grab lunch and go back to the office. They've never let me down!

Yelp
I like this place for breakfast burritos or traditional other dishes. I went with the Chicken Nachos. I like it because I could customize my order with the Ritual app. Don't miss this place. It's right around the corner in the side street. Good find.

Salman M.

Yelp
Get the shrimp burrito every time I'm in the city for Lunch. They can be a bit pricey but employees are nice and portions are generous, not to mention they will cook up the shrimp fresh just for your meal!

Yelp
I got their al pastor burrito and here are my observations. - The al pastor was very substandard and just not very flavorful. - The size of the burrito relative to the price was poor. - The rice and beans were well flavored and were the saving grace. - The service was fast and friendly. It was big miss due to the flavor of al pastor being not that great and the burrito being smaller in size.

Yelp
California burrito with carnitas Chile relleno burrito (we liked the pork choice for the beans) Both were very good We tried to order on line to avoid going in to order, but it said 30-45 minute wait. We ended up ordering in person and it was less than than 10 minutes

Yelp

Yelp
Best breakfast burrito!!! I love the chorizo and egg and then add the panzon beans, cheese and potato.

Yelp
I've been here 4 or 5 times since my first visit and felt I should provide an update (please see my original review). I've gotten mostly Carnitas, but I tried some of the other meats as well. I haven't had any problems with there being pieces of fat in the Carnitas since the initial visit. Everything has been good in each visit. I talked to one of the employees today who recognized me from previous visits and who also saw my original yelp review. He mentioned that they saw my review and addressed the issue with the kitchen and reminded them to be more aware that something like that doesn't happen again. So it sounds like they took my review to heart and stepped up the quality control. I know with Carnitas it is hard to avoid getting big pieces of fat at times, so I didn't really hold it against them in my initial review, just noted it. I'm glad I did, because it brought it to their attention and they did something about it. That is a great sign of a restaurant who pays attention and who cares. My review is still a good review overall and I'll still continue to come here. Thanks Panzon!

Yelp
Low key one of the better Mexican places in the city, especially with their Pozole, papusas, and Al pastor.

Yelp
I wasn't really impressed with the product I received. Got tons of recs from the studio crew and decided to take a look. I saw a lot of authentic and very experimental fare that got me super excited to compare to my home of LA. Definitely loved the idea of a chipotle style build your own of the special burritos! Went with a refried beans and Chile verde California burrito with everything. While the food was actually quite good (outside of the beans which wasn't the consistency that I grew up with) the price and value for portions was not. I paid $21 for something I could've gotten back home for maybe $10-15. Burrito barely fit past my hand and was kinda thin compared to others I've had previously. Also not sure if my suspicion is true and apologies if it isn't but the Agua Fresca I got tasted too sweet and borderline pre packaged or not homemade. Overall if the prices and portion size change id definitely make a return on my next stay in the city. 6.5/10.

Yelp
The last place I expected to find a relatively cheap and decent Mexican place in SF was the Financial District. Yet here I was eating a relatively huge burrito bowl with al pastor for ~$10. Kinda works like a Chipotle in that it's prepared conveyor belt-style, except the meat is actually legitimately Mexican. Al pastor is decent enough to be acceptable by my standards, although it could've done with a bit more flavor. Overall, everything here is super cheap and they have a lot of different options meat-wise. They also have premade options if that's the way you want to go. Staff here is very friendly and helpful. Only drawback is that it's find your own seat and there aren't many seats in here, so if you're coming with a large party it may be a bit of a wait before you grab a table. Definitely more of a solo mission or grab-to-go joint.
google avatar

Rebecca C.

Yelp
I came here for lunch and this is the best deal in financial district/soma for lunch. 2 tacos for $6.50. I got one with al pastor with mild salsa, and another with ground beef with hot salsa. Both are solid and the meat is not too greasy. Fantastic deal for under $7 for lunch!

Yelp
This burrito is straight fire. Have tried the Super Carnitas, California with Carne Asada, and Breakfast Burrito with all the fixings. 12/10 would again.

Yelp
Ceviche, ceviche, ceviche, oh how I love theeeee. In my quest to find healthier alternatives to eating cows and chickens - I went into Panzon and opted to try their daily special of Ceviche on a tostada (I also noticed they had spiced rubbed tilapia resting in sweet peppers, chilies and onion; yum). To be honest, I am always skeptical when ordering Ceviche as everyone has their own take and method as to how Ceviche should be created. Out of curiosity I ordered their daily special and man-o-man was it DELICIOUS! The fish was fresh, (though I ate it so fast that I cannot tell you what kinds of fish/shrimp, etc., were used), the lime sauce was perfectly tart and the other ingredients: cilantro, red onion, jalapeno, cucumber, tomatoes were spot on. Sadly, there was no avocado; or was there - maybe I ate it too fast to notice. As I say to my dogs, "it was Yummy, Delicious, and oh so Nutritious." I will definitely order this special again. On my next venture to Panzon I will try their spiced rubbed fish - it looked just as delicious and I think it is offered regularly on their menu -- the Ceviche is not. Keep up the good work at Panzon. It keeps your customer's smiling.

Yelp
Overpriced boring food, with a side of who cares service. So, so many better places in the city. Uno Dos is right down the street and smokes this place.
google avatar

Yelp
Best breakfast burritos in the area! Super cheap as well. Get the panzon breakfast burrito with chorizo, potatoes, and mild + spicy salsa!
google avatar

Yelp
3.5 stars. The service is quick. I got the caramba plate that came with chicken beef and prawns. The ordering process was confusing and I didn't know where my food was. The taste however was good. The meats were well seasoned and the tortillas were steaming hot. The portion was reasonable but not big. Overall it's a good place for a quick lunch.

Star F.

Yelp
I use to love coming here but honestly I feel like the quality and effort put in to making the food has plummeted. Over priced and very small portioned compared to how much they are charging. I tried to get just the small side of guacamole and they tried to charge $5.50, I've never left a place faster. Better off spending time making food at home and save you're money!!
google avatar

Pat C.

Yelp
Upside: salsa bar Downside: microwaved nachos I will include a photo of my $11 nacho plate and let you make your own judgement. If a half full plate of microwaved nachos do it for you, then I recommend. If you prefer decent food, then Uno Dos Tacos is around the corner and much much better.

Yelp
BEST BREAKFAST BURRITOS EVER. Seriously, you don't even want to know how many of their breakfast burritos I have eaten in the past month. You cannot beat the value, quality, flavor, proportions are perfect. You can a very filling burrito for under $7 here and be full well into the late afternoon. I order the bacon burrito with potato and cheese (extra $$) and get it spicy. But their spicy really is spicy, so I do not recommend for those who are not used to hotter foods. Total comes to $6.27 with tax -- wowwwww! I also want to reiterate on the proportions because it is important! Do you know how many times I have ordered breakfast burritos and there was just a ton of plain egg in the front, with a small spattering of bacon and maybe salsa here and there that made everything super soggy on the inside? You don't get that crap at Panzon. They would never treat you that way. They got your back. It's all made fresh, right in front of you and the wait in the AM is never bad. They also have a fantastic salsa bar, which is always extra points in my book. I've been to several breakfast burrito spots downtown and none of them come close. Front Door Cafe? Nope. Uno Dos? Nahhhh. Good Eats? Alright but not as good. Il Canto? Noooo. List goes on and on. Do yourself a favor and go to Panzon. Please. It's life changing.
google avatar

John J.

Yelp
Tasty food! Every thing is made fresh here. They get it out pretty quick. Plenty of choices and sauces. The chorizo burrito is a spicy treat!

Julie P.

Yelp
The Panzon breakfast burrito with bacon and papas is the best breakfast burrito in the area. Less than $7!

Yelp
Not a bad spot. This place is brand new and has taken over where Rico-Mex was. The place I will say is a thousand times cleaner now. There's actually light in the restaurant and there isn't anymore of the unnecessary clutter. The staff was very friendly when I came by here and I really appreciated the prices not being too bad here either! I ordered two tacos with chicken and boy they hooked it up! It had a lot of meat in it and tasted very good. I washed it down with a horchata that was very refreshing as well. The place is clean and the food isn't bad especially for the price (out the door it was about $8 bucks). I will definitely come back here to try their breakfast burritos and other lunch items soon.
