Papa Gino’s Suddenly Shutters Dozens of Restaurants Across New England - Eater Boston

"Decades-old Massachusetts-based pizza chain Papa Gino’s abruptly closed dozens of its restaurants across New England over the weekend. The chain went from around 150 locations to 97, with workers across locations terminated from employment with no notice. Reports from around New England indicate employees showed up for work to signs posted that read “this location is now closed” and “thank you for your patronage.” One employee in Lowell showed up for his second day of work to find the Papa Gino’s at the Middlesex Plaza Shopping Center closed, while another employee in Mansfield was reportedly told to apply to work at other locations. Papa Gino’s has been around since 1961, when it first opened in East Boston as Piece O’ Pizza. The name change came in 1968, with steady expansion following. Today, the company also includes D’Angelo Grilled Sandwiches. While the company hasn’t had the same name recognition as some larger pizza chains and has remained confined to a fairly small geographic area, it’s been a staple in plenty of school cafeterias for years, and many New England kids grew up on it." - Dana Hatic

Needed a pit stop to refill our bellies and pizza is what we wanted. Stopped at PG in Foxborough Ma. The place was clean and music was refreshing and upbeat. Ken was very polite and they even brought out food right to the table. I would definitely be back here again when I’m in the area

We went to lunch with my mom and step farther, bf and my daughter. Everyone was very friendly. The service was great brought our food to us. The store bring back memories. To when I use to eat there as a kid. Papa Gino’s was my first pizza I ever ate. I still love the pizza.

Trevor is very kind he makes my experience here great. There’s a girl named Leah who makes the pizzas they’re crisp and really very delicious, definitely better than that dominos that is at the corner of the street

Came in to Papa Gino's today after my daughters dance class. The gentleman at the register couldn't have been more welcoming. Taught us some new things about papaginos we didn't know We will definitely be back. I'm not sure if his name but he's from Chicago 😉

Ordered a steak and cheese in a pocket and it was dry and the steak was burnt. They did void the order but why send food out like that. Oh and it was half an hour late arriving. I've been eating papa ginos for 40 yrs. Smdh

Google
Ordered on the app said it would be ready at 520 I didn't go to the counter till 525 and the employee said it will be only a few more minutes. Gave another 10 minutes went back up that same employee started taking an order then walked away started putting together boxes and taking over an area where someone else was already working. He seemed to be completely out of it like he didn't know what was going on. Finally (now 30 minutes passed the 520) he came back we received half our order he said the rest will be another minute. I went put everything down at the table waited another 5 minutes went back up stood there for another 5 then he came back looked at me then turned around to check on the chicken melt. Finally another 5 minutes and he came over with the last of our order. Someone that was with us waited 30 minutes for 1 order of the cinnamon sticks. Another waited 25 minutes after the app said for a cold turkey sub. People stood at the counter getting pissed off because no one came over to see why they were there. We get it if they were really busy our food could have taken longer but when we walked in there was no one there and they only had 1 ticket they were working on. But there was no customer service/ communication. Then Our boys bought the pints ice cream and they employee said they don't have spoons. We all left very upset. Because of the horrible service that employee gave.

Google
App lead me to believe I was getting an extra large meat lovers pizza & chicken bites on a meal deal... got home and it was plain cheese & overdone chicken bites with a lousy teriyaki sauce.... too much too sweet for THIRTY BUCKS! THAT SUCKED!

Yelp
I don't know if this location is under new management based on the previous reviews but everything was great! The staff was great and the food was delicious. In a world where we are quick to point out when an establishment is performing poorly, I just wanted to take a second to highlight a business that is performing well. Thanks for the papa Ginos experience. -Kenneth Martin

Yelp
I've watched this location sink in quality and promptness over the years, but now I've hit my breaking point. Half an hour late on three delivery, cold food, inedibly soggy fries. Not to mention the inexcusable pricing. Never getting my business again.

Yelp
Great simple local pizza place. Service is always great and the staff are always so friendly and helpful. The restaurant is always clean and in order.

Yelp
I am a fan of Papa Gino's especially the thin crust The works Pizza! I love the flavors of everything on that slice. I always order the garlic cheese breadsticks with marinara sauce. I also order the steak and cheese sub with mushroom and onion. Lastly you have to get the meatballs. They can make it plain or with spaghetti. Meatballs are perfection.

Yelp
Worth to order from lunch menu until 5 pm. Ordered two cheese slices with drink included. Assed garden salad for addition $1.99 with dressing. Worth meal and pizza sauce is amazing and really crispy crust of pie.

Yelp
The PG's close to where we live closed. This one is worth driving several miles for. The food is great, the space attractive, but the service and friendliness are beyond anything you'd expect. So welcoming. Thank you, Ken!

Yelp
This Papa Gino's is a staple in our house for a quick, inexpensive meal. The pizza is always consistently delicious. Can't go wrong with a banana pepper pepperoni pizza from Papa Gino's

Yelp
I remembered why I seldom come here for lunch. Wait time was about 40 minutes for an Italian grinder. Who's got that kind of time on lunch break? Not to mention it felt likke it was about 40 degrees in the dining area. Sandwich was okay I guess.

Logan T.

Yelp
The food was great, defintly top notch pizza. I highly recommend to anyone Who wants to order in a pizza. The staff is great as well. As professional and organized as can be. The dude who makes the pizza and the dude who works the grill are smokin, 10/10 nice asses.

Yelp
Very disappointed in everything we had. I was at a new job and they ordered from here for football deal. When it came pizzas were cold, over cooked and tough. The chicken was dry and so hard couldnt even eat it. The garlic bread was so thin and hard it hurt my teeth to eat it. This is a known new england company. It was my worst experience of food ever. I feel it was not worth what i paid. Dont know what happened but will never order from here again.

Yelp
I came here to get pizza and cheese breadstick for my family. They cashier girl was touching pizza slices with her hands that touched money. And there was a employee cutting cheese breadsticks and coughing on them at the same time. Then I saw him cough on the tomatoe sauce for them. I told the manager Tyler at time. He did not do anything about it. He just told me it was not his store... please please DON'T go here to get your food.. I will never come there again

Yelp
This Papa Ginos consistently gets a bad rap compared to the other location a few miles further away one town over. Now I know that their poor reputation is well deserved. We've had very slow service from this location but attributed the slowness to high demand. This time we ordered for pickup - it didn't help. The order was supposed to be ready at 4:00, I arrived at 4:05 and knew I was screwed when I saw the empty warming cabinet. Nothing was ready, and it appeared that only the girl working the counter was doing anything. While she juggled the counter and looked for orders that were piling up in the oven, then cut and boxed the pizzas, three guys argued about who would take which delivery to get the most tip. Ten minutes after arriving, they brought out half my order... Twenty minutes after arriving, they brought out the 'rest' only to discover that one of the drivers had taken our wings in his haste to beat the other driver out the door. Do not waste your time or money here. Keep driving to another location.

Yelp
Wish I could give negative stars because that's all this place deserves I ordered a steak and cheese with extra cheese and a large cheese pizza food was over 45 mins late and when I called had some guy on the end say "it will be there in a bit dude chill" food shows up little to no cheese on my sub and some dry shredded prison meat on a stale roll and to top it off I'm pretty sure the driver sat on my pizza because the little plastic thing in the middle was squished and all the cheese was on the top of the box how this place is still in business is beyond me

Yelp
Called in an order to pick up. As we pulled in, delivery driver had just returned. He stopped right in front, blocking the flow of cars into the lot and almost caused an accident. He left the car running with lights on, which essentially blinded a driver try to come out from the parking lot. Drivers should not be allowed to park in the driveway. We ordered 2 different flavors of chicken tenders and a salad. The wing boxes were not labeled, so we have no idea which was which. One box contained 6 pieces, ranging in size from actual tender size to what I'd consider "popcorn chicken" aka "bite size". The other box contained 8 pieces, again with all different sizes. Breadstick that came with the salad was cold. Overall, not impressed.

Yelp
The last half dozen times I have been here it has been total chaos. Forgotten orders, late food, wrong deliveries. I don't think we will be back when there are other locations to choose from

Thom G.

Yelp
I'm pretty sure everyone that works here hates their job. Every single time I go in, I have to grab someone's attention. Not like they're busy and have no time, like making eye contact three or four times without saying a word, while only being three feet away from me. I don't think anyone has worked there longer than two months. I recognize no one after being a patron for two years and the average age of employees has to be around 16. I don't blame the kids, they're prolly making $9/hr and have no customer service training.... But they can make a decent pizza. Management is the problem here. Just horrible to no job training and I'm simply an annoyance, not a customer. Orders are late, wrong or simply forgotten. Place sucks, but I will be back simply because its the best pizza in the Foxboro and its close to my house.

Yelp
We were in the area for a basketball tournament on Black Friday this year. We needed to feed about 8 boys and their families fairly quickly. PG's was slammed by the manager, I think, handled all of us quickly and efficiently. Matter of fact, we weren't the only team there either. The staff was pleasant, accommodating and worked their tails off for us. Still standard Papa's fare but we enjoyed it and were able to fuel the boys up for their 2nd win of the day!

Pete B.

Yelp
Bad management, Pizza was ok but bathrooms filthy , took 30 minutes to get 2 slices of pizza, don't waste your time in this dump

Yelp
This location used to be great. My family, we have ordered from this location in foxboro,ma at least once every week for the past four years ,,, with no problem up until now. There is a female that I spoke to last week and today (5/28) that was so rude, condescending, most importantly--extremely useless to this franchise-she works the cashier and takes delivery phone orders. She lost them a loyal customer and more money than what she sucks out of the company-zero customer service,,,it's too bad. I took the time to set up a yelp account just to post this...

Charlotte S.

Yelp
I placed an order with Papa Gino's tonight and the guy on the phone took my order told me how much it was going to be and said it would be about 45 minutes I waited for one hour and 15 minutes and called them back and they had no record of my order so the guy apologized and I guess he was going to re order my food but I told him to forget it I would go somewhere else to get my food. So if you want delivery don't call Papa Gino's on Commercial Street in Foxboro.

Joe K.

Yelp
Staff friendly. , Quick serve. Good quality food. Price is a little high. Lunch special. Two slices pizza. Drink

Kyle G.

Yelp
I don't like even posting a bad review but...Alls I have to say is wow. Made a phone order for a pick up. Showed up and they didn't even process my order or have it in the system. A kid came from the bathroom and walked behind the counter. No uniform, hooded sweatshirt, wearing a back pack. I had to re-place my order after talking to the guy who I talked to on the phone 20 minutes earlier. The kid in the hoody walked in the back after taking the order. As I watched him throw some cheese and cause on some dough I was immediately grossed out that he didn't have gloves on or didn't wash his hands. He threw the pizza in the oven and left the building. Manager was apologetic and very nice. Took a few bucks off....Great. As I was waiting, I heard several sneezes and coughs while they were making my buffalo salad....Great. Got my food as I watched a girl tuck her arms in her shirt as she looked as though she was cold....Perfect. I left. Got home. Took one bite of my pizza and threw it all out. To bad because I'd give the actually taste of the pizza a 6.3... one bite, everybody knows the rules. What the f happened to that place!?

Yelp
It took 30 plus minutes just to get a salad and cheesy bread. The Caesar salad had very few pieces of romaine and the rest lettuce. The person who took our order Jenna was very rude when we asked for another ranch. She said "what do you need it for" like really???!! We got a salad. Then proceeds to tell us it's 25 cents. As we were getting ready to leave another person got called up for there order, they hand him his breadsticks and he says I got a salad with it. The employee says "oh". Five minutes later they get there salad. Very slow service for having about ten people working this night and only a couple people in the dining room. Lots of chit chatting and standing around. Overall the food is your average papa Gino's. It was good.

Yelp
Ordered pizza at 4:45 pm via website, which stated that it was supposed to be delivered at 5:30. Okay, that's cool. 5:30 rolls around, no pizza. At 5:50, still no pizza. So, I called. I was told the pizza was in the oven and would be delivered at 6 pm and that they were short staffed. I get that, I can cut them some slack. 6:30 rolls around, still no pizza. Attempted calling, and no one will pick up, or it is busy. Currently in the process of going to the location to see if we can get a resolution. There is no way a pizza should take more than two hours to make and receive.

Yelp
No customer in customer service with this location. Visited several times and sadly disappointed, we ordered delivery the other day for a bunch of hungry kids and it was not much better. Employees are unfriendly and act like a order of 1 cheese and 1 pepperoni pizza is a huge inconvenience. My kids love Papa Gino's however we will not be ordering from this location again.

Yelp
This is seriously the worst Papa ginos. They always come an hour late with cold food andThey always forget things when I order them.. all of their food is DRY. I ask for extra sauce on my chicken parm sub and they barely give me any Nevermind extra. I asked for dipping sauce for bread sticks they don't give it to me. I ask for extra sauce on the pizza Everytime because it's always dry and overcooked. To them extra means light and regular means No sauce. I order chips and a drink on the side they almost ALWAYS forget it and I have to call back for them to take another hour to bring it. This has happened to me multiple times and I'm so sick of it I finally decided to write about it.

Crystal C.

Yelp
I have eaten here several times and had no issues but the last 2times i have ordered from here i have had issues one out of the 2 times it took over 40mins for a pickup order of a steak an cheese sub and a chicken ceaser pocket not too complicated. Then the last time i ordered from their which was 2days ago it was around 830pm not a soul was in the place when i got my food the burger was cold fries were missing also it was a sloppy mess of a sub they put together just unreal and unacceptable i immediately gave the food back and demanded my money back. Their was no reason for that especially since the place was completely empty. So needless to say next time i want papa ginos i wont be ordering from this location again. Very disappointed especially since I've worked for papa ginos in my younger years and its not a complicated job to make their food.

Tom F.

Yelp
This place is poorly managed. It took forever to get a pizza and I wasn't alone. With the number of people behind the counter, crashing into each other, they should get the job done.
google avatar

Dave D.

Yelp
Food is good, standard Papa Gino's food. But this location is going in reverse when it comes getting food in a reasonable time. Slow, slow, slow. Not a busy night and 7 to 8 people working.
google avatar

Jonathan V.

Yelp
I went to this place for a quick lunch. The place was not busy and it was around 2-3pm. I ordered a Tuna Sub and an Italian Sub and Cheese Bread Sticks. I was going to tip them 5$ but the food ended up taking 23 mins. Then it sat in the window for another 2-3 mins before the girl who just clocked in called my name. Maybe I just came at the wrong time between shift changes or something. I did not think it would take 26 mins for 2 cold subs and cheese bread. The food came out pretty good but I saw a guy come in and walk up to the counter and the workers were busy chatting and ignored him for like 2-3 mins. This also made me not wanna tip them. Good thing the food was OK or they would be getting 1-2 stars.

Leanne V.

Yelp
Worst papa Gino's ever. Went today after placing an online order. 45 minutes later I still did not have food. Witnessed three people get their money back and two others walk out before ordering. Manager on duty for lunch never apologized or tried to correct the situation. This is not the first time I've experienced this. Will not go here again.
google avatar

Brent Z.

Yelp
I like this place. I don't understand the other reviewer who complained that the delivery driver stopped in her way.. seriously? That's worth giving the place a 2 star review? Some people don't get it. I've been coming here for the past couple years, and they're always friendly and helpful. It's a pizza place, I don't expect the same kind of service and food you get at an expensive restaurant. For the price and market, they're very good.
