The Best Restaurants in Portland’s Woodstock Neighborhood | Eater Portland

"An eclectic Woodstock staple since 1989, it would be all too easy for Papaccino’s to coast on vibes. But the baristas at this neighborhood stalwart take their coffee seriously; using beans from Seattle’s Caffe D’arte, they know how to churn out drinks quickly during a rush, and when to spend a little extra effort on presentation during a sleepy afternoon. Outside of coffee, Papaccino’s offers draft beers, a small wine list, and a Woodstock-famous cereal bar — hard to find in other Portland cafes. The spacious coffeeshop is ideal for lingering with a good book, with outdoor seating on both Southeast Woodstock and 42nd." - Nathan Williams

My girls and I were looking for a quick pick me up and found this spot. Comfy chairs, outdoor seating and delicious coffee, plus a sense of humor. We loved it!

Google
I just left this coffee shop because of a crazy rude barista behind the counter who decided to stop me and my young three daughters as we were using the restroom. My husband was outside sitting with our dog and my daughters and I were using the restroom to wash our hands. She went out of her way to tell me that this restroom is only for customers and she sees what we are doing here. What are we doing here?? Washing our hands before we enjoy drinks and food? She must be used to the slums of Portland and doesn’t recognize a nice family wanting to wash up before eating. We decided to walk a little further and give our $24 plus tip at more welcoming coffee shop down the street called harder day coffee company. You should try that place instead of dirty papacinos.

Google
Nice guys but if you buy something to go know that they will put all the ingredients in a bag and hand it to you. I ordered a bagel with lox and CC and when I got to my destination all the ingredients were in separate plastic containers. All cold from the fridge. I had to try to spread my cold, hard cream cheese with a cheap plastic fork in my car in the parking lot, instead of simply being able to pull my TO GO bagel out of the bag and eat it on the way to work. Next time I’ll buy the separate ingredients myself, as long as I’m the o e making the breakfast. I could’ve gone next door to Safeway and get a bunch of items in a bag.

Google
I kinda love this place. The service is sometimes a bit slow but it's a popular place! The staff & patrons are generally pretty nice, if not friendly. Food is tasty, but probably not among the top 10 healthiest choices. Drinks are bomb diggity! I wish there was a 16 oz. Cappuccino at Papaccino's.... I know that in a sense that's ridiculous or blasphemic or something. But in another sense, if any place is gonna offer a 16 oz. Cappuccino, I'd like to think it's the place called Papaccino's.

Google
Papachino's surpassed all expectations of a coffee shop that I might have had. Upon your first steps in you are greeted with a classic "hipster" atmosphere suited to Portland. The service was spectacular across the 2 visits I've had so far. Staff are cheerful and quick, as well as polite while announcing closing. The prices were a pleasant surprise ranging from 5-7 dollars for a 20oz drink. I could not recommend the matcha latte more!

Google
I had some business to take care of in the neighborhood and decided to stop into this cafe to get myself a treat for successfully adulting. This is exactly what I like in a cafe. A marvelous and friendly barista, an unpretentious and welcoming atmosphere, lovely food offerings (I got the sausage egg and cheese English muffin) and delicious coffee. I'm super happy I decided to give this spot a shot. But now I'm sad that I don't live in the neighborhood because I want to come by every day!

Google
spacious coffee shop with lots of comfy seating! staff were super friendly, definitely will return!

Google
NO KID AREA. I drove 20 minutes to get to a novel coffee shop with a play area on an unexpected solo parenting day. Apparently it closed during covid and never opened back up. Bummer! Cute spot. Lots of folks working/studying.

Yelp
This coffee shop has been my stomping grounds to get to get work done. So far I have tried their caramela, Mexican mocha, drip coffee (medium and dark roast) and they have been consistently great. WiFi is decently quick and gets the job done. The ambience is bright and spacious and belongs right on Woodstock. Seating ranges from leather chairs that are by the window, outdoor bench table seating, two person tables, larger tables that can seat 5 to 6 people, higher chairs facing the window. If you plan to stay and get work done for an extended period of time, I would bring a power bank because the tables do not have plugs. In terms of food, they have a decent selection raging from muffins, bagels, sandwiches with many variations. They also have a cereal bar, which I don't see it being used very often. In my opinion, their bagels and muffins and sandwiches are so much better. Overall: this is a great local neighborhood coffee shop that has great coffee with good food and a welcoming ambience with friendly staff.

Yelp
Great, friendly service with even better London fog tea lattes. We had a wonderful afternoon here in the charming coffee cafe. We weren't hungry so no report on the freshly roasted bagels except they smelled heavenly. We'll be back to this charming area of Portland.

Yelp
I came here to try the cereal bar but it looked sort of dusty and like it wasn't used often. I am quite an anxious person and was too stressed to ask how it works so opted to just order a coffee. Coffee was fine but nothing special. Nice that they have couches and various seating options but the couches are in serious need of a cleaning.

Yelp
I go every day, great staff , friendly banter, make me my usual quickly and it's always delicious. Shout out to Scott & Ian, baristas extraordinaire

Yelp
First time at a Woodstock Classic. The interior is bright and there are a half dozen sugar free syrups and milk alternatives. They also carry gluten free bread for their sandwiches. I spotted a cereal bar as I walked in. I know some peeps who ADORE cold cereal and can see this as a draw for them. I also gave the eye a bunch of nice looking breakfast sandwiches but settled on an oat milk sf hazelnut mocha and an almond biscotti. (Conventional biscotti, but nice!) Good mocha. The seats are a mix of tables and comfy chairs. There is also a large table suitable for groups or games. They have a shelf with books and even a few games. The place feels real - whimsical, a touch shabby, but clean and welcoming. Definitely worth coming in.

Yelp
The heart of Woodstock. Great coffee, great staff in the perfect location for the community. Now, they just need breakfast burritos. (Hint hint)

Yelp
Wanted to try a new coffee spot and thought this place looked cool. It's got Eugene vibes/ Heavy Metal music, people playing board games and a mix of generations sipping their beverages. Staff were friendly and menu was solid. Got two of their fancy lattes - vanilla and caramel blend. Probably the worst tasting coffees we've had in a long time, which is saying a lot being a native in this coffee town. They were so burnt tasting that we had to pour them out. Super disappointed as we love supporting small businesses like this.

Yelp
A wonderfully local coffee shop to the Woodstock area. Great coffee, great vibes, and the baristas are always so friendly. It's a hoot every time I'm in. Once at 6am on a Monday morning I walked into the place filled to the brim with blue hairs, minus the younger barista, who was blasting metal music and everyone was just having a great time. It's definitely The Spot™ and I 1000% love supporting a place like this over any franchised nonsense.

Yelp
Yummy, yummy, yummy latte! I highly recommend this place because of the chai latte that they serve, great vegan options as well!

Anette G.

Yelp
Papaccino's is one of my favorite coffee shops in Woodstock. The breakfast bagels are my go to and are really good for the price. This spot also has a very cozy community-focused atmosphere which is perfect for catching up with friends or just needing to get some work done. The folks behind the counter are great vibes and I love coming here!

Yelp
I love Papas! Truly! I'm here at least twice a week and my whole team at work meets up here now instead of the office. I love their breakfast sandwiches, their warm and welcoming staff, their rotating art displays on the back wall, their extensive drink menu and the sense of community that this place offers. I love seeing the same faces here every week and that we all just collectively love spending the day here.
google avatar

Michelle C.

Yelp
The vibes of the place was cozy and many people were inside the store. All the baristas had such chill and easy going auras. I always like to try new drinks everytime i visit a new coffee shop and the barista at the register had referred one of the mochas with whip cream. It was very delicious! The restrooms are also very tidy, clean and spacious. Definitely a place to visit with a friend and catch up!

Yelp
Hi! I'm looking for a phone number to contact Papaccinos. I tried the number 503.665.8543 and it wouldn't go through. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Yelp
Got a chance to check out this place today, and it was cool! I was lucky enough to find parking right outside, although it appears there is plenty of parking in the area. The staff was very friendly, and my coffee came out quickly. I didn't order anything fancy, just a black coffee, but it was very good. One of the big perks was that there was plenty of space and different types of seating, from comfortable chairs, to larger tables. Definitely a great place to meet up!

Caroline S.

Yelp
I am shocked by the interaction I just had with the brown haired barista with the nose ring. I went in at 4:30 to get a coffee and do a little bit of writing before they close. I ordered a drip coffee and it was burnt worse than gas station coffee that had been sitting out all night. I asked the girl working if I could get something else and she sneered at me and tried to gaslight me saying that "our coffee is just very dark roast, and you get what you get at the end of the day. You can always go to another coffee shop". Then she told me that I "gave her attitude" when all I said was that it tasted burnt. I was happy to pay the difference to get something else. She did make me Americano but she acted like she was doing me the biggest favor in the world. I know I didn't get an attitude with her. I'm a server and try to be as kind to other service workers as possible but this girl literally should not be working with the public if she hates other people this much.

Yelp
I'm a huge fan of this funky little coffee shop in the heart of Woodstock. On the drink front, my staple is the Mexican Mocha Latte with oat milk. On the food front, I rarely say no to a fresh apple fritter or a bear claw. They also have a wall of breakfast cereal to choose from - which makes my younger self very nostalgic . The staff is always in a great mood and there's always fun banter flying around and good music playing. They sell art from local artists too if you want to take a little bit of the Papaccino's experience home.

Yelp
Great iced mochas! The cold brew was good also. The service was lovely! Would like to come back again.

Yelp
What a cool place! Stopped by here after an adventure in SE Portland/Milwaukie area. Staff are super friendly and chill. Coffee was fantastic- felt like it was made with love, and worth the wait. I also got a ham and Swiss English muffin sandwich which was OK, nothing spectacular but still tasty. Worth visiting again!

Yelp
I love this place! Good selection of spots to plug electronics in and many use to work on laptops, including myself. It can get busy and the good spots taken but they clear out. Good price for drinks and food. Very comparable price to chains like Starbucks or Dutch Bros. The quality of the chai is better here. They have a sweet, spicy, and mixed chai. So good! The staff are very chill too. I see them chatting with regulars and good about answering questions and making drinks as fast as they can. Only thing is that because of the amount of staff, it can get a little messy at tables with crumbs. But it's not super noticeable. TLDR; good place for working, chatting, and good drinks

Yelp
A Friday morning coffee this morning here, we've shifted over here from our previous Woodstock neighborhood favorite coffee shop. A change of ownership there has made their service and offerings less than satisfactory - or maybe it's just different personnel and a different set of communication skills that makes it less welcoming... Regardless, Papaccino's is a nice change. An excellent range of breakfast offerings, a comfortable environment, and a good pour make this place an easy choice for our new "go-to" spot for our occasional morning coffee. The latte I had was well prepared, a good amount of foam in a nice sized cup. And the berry cheese danish I had was a nice change from a more generic offering. A nice side note - on hearing a familiar voice, I turned and recognized a friend from my morning exercise class. We had a nice chat, turns out that she comes here on a regular basis. As, apparently do several other people I know. Pretty sure that Papaccino's will be our new regular spot!

Yelp
I got the mocha and it was 10/10. There is a lot of seating so it makes it the perfect place to work. Barista's are also always so so nice.

Craig M.

Yelp
There's no excuse for the owners to employ one person in a giant coffee house during rush hour. Doesn't matter how good the coffee is or how nice the people are, 1 star because of cheap owners. That poor barista... So crowded. 1 person working. Get it together owners!!!
google avatar

Yelp
Papaccino's is a Portland icon. It's been going strong for decades now, and I hope it continues for decades more. Great coffee made by great, friendly staff, with good bagels and food as well. Their shots are always in the flavor sweet spot, never burned or bitter. The coffee never leaves you with an acidic feeling but always goes down smooth, with nice floral notes. Pre-covid this place was filled with tables with people working, Reed students hanging out, people reading the paper, etc. Great vibes. COVID eliminated the in person seating temporarily, but even so the place retains its welcoming nature and good feeling.

Yelp
very bad cappuccino. the staff are really nice. wifi wasn't working when I was there.

Thatcher L.

Yelp
Good food and beverages, excellent service, a very nice and friendly atmosphere. A good place to have coffee

Patrick M.

Yelp
Such a fun little spot, only thing I wish is that they had bagels all day.
google avatar

Stefano M.

Yelp
We just went there after picking fish up at the Fish Market across the street. First, kudos for being so organized and having a great system in place for social distancing we got a cappuccino and a spicy chai with oat milk. The cappuccino was especially good compared to other places in town that have weirdly flavored beans. I didn't get cereal from the cereal bar but it was adorable that they had it!

Yelp
It's interesting to see some negative/low rating reviews! Very disheartening, and definitely not my experience with Papaccino's! As a barista myself, it's really a bummer to see other reviews.. maybe I just lucked out today! Today was my first time stopping in, and I snagged a Carmella Latte (caramel & vanilla) and a sausage bagel sandwich. My card declined, I sat down to figure out what the problem was... In the meantime, Scott started on my order even though I told him to hold off. I didn't want to get stuff for free! He assured me it wasn't a big deal, and to "come get it before it gets cold!" This is something I have done for many people, being a barista myself.. but it's so nice to be on the receiving end of that. While figuring out what was up with my card, and trying to figure out my new phone-- I heard Scott greet multiple people by name, have their drinks ready, and be very patient with some of the older folks coming in to order. The latte, bagel sandwich, and service were all phenomenal. I made sure to grab his name before I left, just to leave this review. Hopefully someone in management/ownership will see it. I was so thankful that he was so patient and understanding about the card situation-- and I ultimately figured out what was going on, and paid my tab. I will definitely be back!

Yelp
Rudest cashier ever. I come in here nearly every day, and always pay with my phone. Order the same drink every time. And when i say im paying with my phone, she (girl with glasses and xte xmas sweatshirt) snaps back that i should "tell her i am paying that way beforehand" - which i did - and when i remind her kindly that i always pay that way...she snaps back that she gets far too many transactions to remember me. Well, hon, thats just fine. You lost one and everyone i know or that asks me will know what lovely customer service and barista skills you lack.

Emily K.

Yelp
Papaccino's is your more or less standard local neighborhood coffee haunt. Usually plenty of seating, decent drinks and pastries, and good Wi-Fi.

Tommy B.

Yelp
Anyone who writes a negative review of this place is just wrong, or a Karen, lol. And I'll tell them that, too! I have, and I'll do it again. My parents have beeen going here since 1993, and I've been going daily since 2018. The people who work here are some of the kindest, most laid back ever. Prices are on the lower end of the market and the quality is always top notch. The atmosphere is one of the very last early-2000s-vibe coffee shops in this gentrified city, and I believe it's the oldest independent shop in Portland. The last bad experience I had at Papaccino's was in about 2003 when Ruth yelled at me (6) for writing with my finger in the condensation on the glass. I feel like one rough go in 20 years is fairly acceptable.
google avatar

Christopher P.

Yelp
Comfortable place with lots of charm and friendly baristas. It's big enough that they had a birthday party in there this weekend without it taking over the whole place. They got all the good milk alternatives and the prices aren't too high. I'll be back.

Mary C.

Yelp
Unbeatable! Love the staff, coffee and pastries. I can also linger longer here. My new fav coffee shop.
google avatar

S M.

Yelp
Great place for coffee and a breakfast sandwich! They had inside and outdoor seating. We got our order and ate outside.
google avatar

Todd H.

Yelp
A three star built on reputation. The virus has done much to damage the natural appeal of this location and business. Normal times would rate this coffee shop above all others. Their tables were filled with people you knew they are your neighbors. The pastries and the goodies are still there. You just are not seeing them be consumed at tables and feeling a ping of jealousy. All the coffee dinking tables are now stacked in the corner. All the ambience has been Coronad out of the place. There are lines single file and six feet apart. Everyone is honoring the social rules and keeping six feet apart. Taking away the charm that once was the heart of this coffee gathering place. The Coffe is still far superior than any chain you could name. What they lack in speed fancy names and organization they make up for with character and confidence. It's a pleasure to support and help a place like this to survive. If ever we go back to normal this and their service area will be the guide for you to measure your own progress
google avatar

Jacob W.

Yelp
The staff is very friendly and the cider I had was cold and refreshing on a snowy evening. There is a lot of space for people to get some work done or work in groups. They have quite the variety when it comes to beverages. The main issue with the place was the general cleanliness. I had a hard time finding a spot I was comfortable putting my work bag. I am a bit of a germaphobe but the floors and walls were just a bit too dirty for my liking. The price was right thought and it's rare to find a coffee shop in the area open past 5pm.
google avatar

Alisha C.

Yelp
I live right down the street from here, and used to walk down a couple times a month. The drip coffee is pretty terrible - it tasks like they never clean there coffee makers/shuttles. Getting an espresso drink is hit and miss. The morning crew is great, super friendly and engaging with solid barista skills. The afternoon is a different story. The last time I went in one of the Batista's thought it would be "funny" to write "gay latte" on my friends cup. The logic behind this was thoroughly explained to my groups of friends and I, and none of us found it funny or made all of us uncomfortable and upset. I have not come back since.

Emily W.

Yelp
Coffee is ok but nothing like it used to be. Decor is sad and run down, gross ripped up chairs. At least the papa's mocha is still there . Made with chocolate milk, it's a favorite. Just remember to ask for the whipped cream.
google avatar

Megan C.

Yelp
I love the location of this spot. The prices are a little steep in my opinion. I got the Mexican mocha...it was tasty... just expensive. The place could definitely be a little cleaner. My friend brought her daughter and so we sat in the play area...the toys were kinda nasty. I will give the place another try and change my review if it's any different.
google avatar

Clare Q.

Yelp
Consistently lovely staff. What a novelty in a coffee shop anymore! Coffee is good, no current indoor seating, convenient location and take out available. Great place to order coffee and pastries from across the street. I fond myself coming back here even during covid just because of the nice people and location. Really like it here.
google avatar

David E.

Yelp
If you need to survive this place is ok. However there in nothing special to recommend it. Mediocre latte and fairly inedible scone.
google avatar

Jody T.

Yelp
14March18 @ 1pm Large comfortable room on Woodstock. Quick, friendly, personable service. Lots of comfortable seating with a view out to Woodstock. We had a couple of lattes that were very good with nice crema and smooth not bitter taste. Reasonable prices. Music playing that was soothing and not intrusive. Lots of power outlets around the room.
google avatar

Jens J.

Yelp
This was a spur-of-the-moment stop. If this review was based solely on my latte, it would be either four or five stars. Very nice and smooth flavor with a perfect pine tree formed at the top of the foam. And the girl that took my order had the sweetest smile. But the ambience is just not quite right. I can't quite put my finger on it. It feels unkempt. Maybe it isn't really, but it still seems that way. I don't know if it is the concrete floor or the stained ceiling tiles, but Pappacino does not beckon with a "Come stay and mellow out here for a while" message.
google avatar

Mick W.

Yelp
Wow! Sorry to be making this update.... I have been a long time regular, and since trump has been elected there have been a few regular members who are now hostile to everyone who is not white. They have made derogatory comments about Muslims, and they openly tell people not to speak Spanish! When we tell the staff that these racists are offensive they explain that the owner has not empowered them KICK THESE JERKS OUT! On one occasion they sat within ear shot of a women who was obviously Muslim and made disparaging comments. She was made uncomfortable enough that she eventually asked them to stop, and other customers assisted. These trumpsters continued to provoke and ultimately the staff intervened. The sad part of this is that the trumpsters were back the next day, and the Muslim women has yet to return (that I have seen). Come on Papaccino's. Make this a HATE FREE COFFEE SHOP! P.S. The staff is still great!
google avatar

Rebecca S.

Yelp
I cannot recommend this place enough. Super friendly people working their, always happy to help and see you, and they even seemed to appreciate the kids and what they like. Breakfast sandwiches and chai tea latte are my fav here. My kids adore the cereal bar. They are very sensitive to cleaning everywhere after each person is finished in an area as well!
google avatar

Marty H.

Yelp
Good coffee, friendly service. Not the best place to try to get work done (on your laptop). The neighborhood is filled with families with young kids so the owner has catered to that demographic. And rightly so. So it can be bit distracting at times with kids running around a bit and loud conversations. However, it is bright, open with plenty of comfortable seating. Very nice neighborhood coffee shop. Owner is friendly, employees are efficient and nice. Just don't expect to sit in one of their comfortable chairs and get lost in a good book or to quietly work on your laptop.
google avatar

Tiffany C.

Yelp
The best coffee in Woodstock! I love their kid area and there is always parking nearby . The staff is so friendly and always remembers our order . We also buy bags of coffee from them for home and it's delicious
google avatar

B S.

Yelp
I love this place, great coffee, friendly staff, and it's got a great sense of community. Snacks are tasty, and there are a lot of seating options in case you want to study, people watch, recline and have a conversation, or sit in the sun and solve a rubix cube (they have one). I have made friends here that have lasted beyond the coffee shop. It would be 5 stars if it weren't for the loud Trump supporters who frequent the place on Sundays (and in smaller crowds on other days) and seem to be having loud angry conversations trying to goad local liberals into arguments, or just make us feel crappy. While most days it's a great space to relax or study, they definitely take the chill out of the day. At Papaccino's, every day /but/ Sunday is the day of rest.
google avatar

Yelp
Papaccino's coffee shop is one of my favorite spots on Woodstock. Sitting at their picnic tables on the sidewalk and people watching is one of my favorite pastimes. In this gem, you'll find many regulars sipping their morning brew while enjoying friendly conversation. It's a great meeting spot for school or work discussions. When I was in grad school I'd often come here for the coffee and and stay for the beer. Papaccino's creates a wonderful community atmosphere where everyone can feel comfortable and at home. And if you hangout here enough you'll make some pretty great friends.
