On the Grid : Papa's Cache Sabroso

"Do you love garlic? Of course you love garlic. Papa's will deliver it in spades on Chicago's finest contribution to Latino cuisine: the jibarito. Imagine sandwich bread but instead of bread it is greasy fried plantain, smothered in mayonnaise and jammed with garlicky meat! Mouth pow! Also, perfect rotisserie chicken. Luis Guzmán ate here and his picture's on the wall and that's all you need to know." - Firebelly Design

The Best Restaurants In Humboldt Park

"If you haven’t had a jibarito before, this is the place to start. Papa’s jibaritos are garlicky and delicious, served with a side of Spanish rice you can use as a base for when the contents of your sandwich inevitably fall onto your plate. The dining room is small, but there’s a covered patio out front where you and a friend can split a BYOB six-pack." - josh barnett, john ringor

A gem of a hole in the wall if there ever was one. The inside is pleasantly warm and thick with the scent of rotisserie chicken. Staff are very friendly and service is fast. Food was amazing and well above board for the price. Especially the jibaritos and the chicken. Definitely will be returning in the future.

Google
What a wonderful restaurant with delicious food and lovely people! We went there after seeing a review by a journalist and we are so glad we did it! We enjoyed everything on the menu, especially their jibarito! Absolutely recommended if you are in Chicago!

Google
Delicious, garlicky jibaritos; exceptional service and inviting staff (Papa himself gave us a warm welcome too)! Indoor seating is limited, but they have a toasty, heated outdoor space for cold winter days. Prices are reasonable too. Food I tried: - Ribeye Steak Jibarito: The steak was super juicy and flavorful, and the plantain was quite densely flattened. Adding their garlic sauce on top added a nice kick. The arroz con gandules on the side was also extremely good-- a little crispy, very flavorful and aromatic. - Shredded Chicken Jibarito: The shredded chicken was also tender and juicy with great flavor, but I think the flavor of the steak was more robust, which I preferred.

We were out doing laundry and decided to order the half chicken, rice, and patacones combo to go. It was very delicious.

Google
My last trip to Chicago, I realized I hadn’t ever tried a jibarito. Really good. This was chicken. The rotisserie chickens looked so good by themselves, but had to try this.

Google
This is the best Jibarito I’ve ever had! Mind you I’ve only had two, but I’m stopping here. I don’t want to ever have another one if it doesn’t come from this place and that’s just period. The Lechon is only served on Saturdays and I can see why. They have perfected this pork recipe. It melts in your mouth and it’s full of flavor. I will return and I will bring others with me.

Google
Papa Cache is a hidden gem serving one of the best sandwiches you’ll ever taste. The jibarito is unforgettable—bursting with flavor so incredible, it’ll leave you speechless. Friendly staff and consistently fantastic food make this spot a must-visit. I never miss my quarterly pilgrimage to this culinary treasure!

Google
Papa’s Cache Sabroso’s vibrant mural on Division Street in Humboldt Park, with just about every cultural flag, signals the restaurant’s welcoming atmosphere. The small dining space was filled with customers and a steady line of take-out and restaurant pickup services. Our server was very friendly and efficient. Primarily though, my Puerto Rican friend, who is extremely selective about the taste and quality of Puerto Rican food, approved Papa’s Cache Sabroso and found his 1/2 chicken with rice, delicious. I also enjoyed my shredded chicken sandwich and fried plantains. Just look for the mammoth Puerto Rican flags which span Division Street and head to Papa’s Cache Sabroso restaurant!

Yelp
Great food, great service, and it's BYOB! Their rice and beans are amazing! The place is small so don't be surprised to wait for a table but well worth it. They also have a patio that has heaters for some extra space. They have a small menu but everything we had was a hit. The chicken is juicy and well flavored. The tostones with the garlic sauce I could eat everyday. Their homemade hot sauce has amazing flavor and is definitely hot but not crazy hot. Can't wait to come back and try something new.

Yelp
I placed an order three Steak Jibaritos online. The pickup process was pretty easy, just had to wait in line while other people ordered their food in front of me. The Jibaritos themselves were good. A little overpriced but still a decent menu. My only issue with them was the lack of garlic on top. I ordered two out of three with arroz con gandules for $2.50 more. The rice was pretty good definitely not the best I've had. Not exactly sure if I'd return anytime soon. $16.50 for Jibarito with rice is a tad bit much. I got my usually spot that tastes a lot better for a lot cheaper as well. Won't rule this place out, but I have my spot already.

Yelp
Casual Puertorican cuisine in a neighborhood vibe. Thier specialty is the rotisserie chicken for its Great flavor and spice. If you happen to be in Humboldt park you must stop by. Try thier hibaritos, the rotisserie chicken is a must.

Yelp
I picked up dinner after 8 pm on a Monday evening. i wanted to try Chicago special Jibarito, and this was the only place I could find open after 8. I went with a steak jibarito. It was excellent. Fried plantains on the side was good as well.

Yelp
We did a catering order from Papa Cache for lunch and we all loved it. The chicken was so flavorful and the rice was bomb! Everything came so fresh. Would definitely go back and try at the restaurant. From what we tried, we would highly recommend!

Yelp
I LOVE Jibarito's! This was my first one and immediately I fell in love with them! If you're visiting, I'd recommend trying these! I preferred the chicken Jibarito. The restaurant is small and is more of a spot for a quick bite. Service was great and fast.

Yelp
We ordered: Jibarto con Arroz - steak between fried garlicky plantains Papa's Pollo Food was all delicious. Both the rotisserie chicken and steak was well seasoned and tender. Jibarto sandwich was a great combo of fresh and savory flavors and textures. Rice texture and flavor is a tasty side. Employee was very enthusiastic and nice. Good service. I like the family vibe including the people photos on the tables. I'm going to recommend this to my Puerto Rican friends.

Yelp
In the world of Puerto Rican cuisine Papa stands up to the best. I stopped in the old neighborhood for a quick bite and was drawn in to Papa's. It's not hard to do. Been here many times because it's tried and true. He's been around on Division street about 25 years and is usually around in the restaurant to meet and greet. The service is excellent with Johnny knowing the menu the neighborhood regulars and knows how to treat newcomers and walk them through the menu. I usually go family style with a friend for a whole chicken, arroz y gandules, and Yuca En Escabeche , yucca with onions, simple but insanely delicious. Now their chicken is off the hook. No one had chicken like this. Lightly spiced broasted to perfection. There's plenty of other menu options to choose from. Their Lechon Asado on Saturdays only is some of the best around. There's also plenty of outside seating so try Papa's out to get a true taste for Humboldt Park.

Yelp
This was my first time going to this restaurant on May 27th me & my daughters were on a lunch date & I must say the food was very good & tasty & prices were very reasonable only thing was that is was a lil small & they didn't serve to many side. But great customer service & great food. I will be returning soon.

Yelp
I have been coming here for years since friends introduced me to this place back in our college years. It's a no frills spot with DELICIOUS Puerto Rican food. The steak Jibarito is a must have. If I even set foot into Chicago I bee line to Humboldt park to eat here. The tender steak topped with crisp veggies, sautéed onions, garlic sauce and crispy plantain...mmm. Thinking about it literally makes my mouth water. I can't wait until the next time I'm visiting Chicago so I can eat this sandwich again!

Yelp
Today the wifey & I treated my nephew & his wife to Papa's Cache!! When I tell you this is the best rotisserie chicken in the city, you better listen!! I had the 1/2 chicken w/ arroz con gandules. Some yuca (i have to have it) and some tostones. The yuca was 8/10 The tostones was pretty good 6.8/10 The star was that rotisserie bird! So flavorful, juicy & tender. You can taste the garlic in that bird and it pairs well with the rice. Great meal and the service was EXCELLENT!! Definitely a must try! Visit Humboldt Park and go have some of the best rotisserie chicken you'll ever have. Or check out one of their other dishes. Solid 8.8/10
google avatar

Yelp
Papa's is a staple in the community. I love this food. The rotisserie is delicious! I mean everything is as delicious You can't go wrong here it's a 10 out of 10 I do recommend

Yelp
Everything is amazing. The garlic on the plantains is on point! First time experiencing Puerto Rican food. I love it

Yelp
While vacationing in Chicago, I was told by my local friend that there's a "restaurant that I have to try"! We go the first day: They're closed. But we weren't discouraged: We went back two days later. And though they were closing early, they allowed us to order and dine in. So happy that they did! Authentic food. Savory flavors. Friendly staff. Joyful customers. The steak sandwich was delicious and tender. The rice and beans side was plentiful. The food was so good, we took a whole chicken meal home with us...and ended up eating it all that night! The hack: Add their homemade green chili sauce to your rice for a kick of heat! (You'll thank me later!) Next time I'm in town, I'll add this to my "must visit" list.
google avatar

Molly C.

Yelp
Delicious Jibarito, beans were fantastic as well. Lives up to the hype. Served with homemade salsa verde and garlic sauce.

Yelp
Fantastic food, nice people. Try the chicken, you'll be happy you did! Support this local business

Yelp
They don't make PASTELS! YOUR PUERTO RICANS But, you have tacos. So sad I don't eat there no more
google avatar

Guillermo M.

Yelp
Sabroso! Delicious food! Their food taste soo good! Don't expect to get your food right away Be patient and enjoy good food listening to good salsa music!

Angela K.

Yelp
The very nice owner with the hat will make your day if you ever get the lovely chance of coming here. The food was amazing. I would definitely recommend coming here. Great service. Fast. And open when I wanted something to eat. Currently 3:18 pm.

Kevin C.

Yelp
The best Puerto Rican food..so far Checked in on a few occasions and their chicken is nice and tender. Staff are friendly and the service is top line!
google avatar

Samantha P.

Yelp
10/10. How could you not love Papa Caches! One of my favorite Jibaritos in town and the rice and beans is fire. On summer nights, occasionally you'll catch live music and the owner is very friendly.

Rosie A.

Yelp
You wouldn't think of Tacos when going to a PR restaurant. But let me tell you, this tacos were AMAZING! The owner had ran out of tortillas and he sent someone to the store to buy them. It was worth the wait and I thank them for going above and beyond. The tacos were steak and Chicken but they were not like the regular Mexican tacos, this tacos were Better!
google avatar

Tania A.

Yelp
Best chicken, Jibarito! Must try this place! Chicago staple with over 20 years of service.
google avatar

Brent C.

Yelp
BEWARE! When I followed the link to their website from Yelp, and then clicked to view their "Restaurant Menu, " my computer locked up and a screen appeared supposedly from Microsoft while a recording started stating that my computer had been compromised! It also stated not to turn off my computer. Well, I immediately turned off my computer and now it seems to work normally. If I do end up having issues because of their website, I'm sure that I can hold them legally liable, whether or not they intentionally did this or if someone hacked their site.
google avatar

Jimmy G.

Yelp
Food is Amazing!! I am from Texas and live in Texas.....but when I am hanging out in Chicago..I make sure to stop by, and get my fix, at this fine restaurant. The Staff is super Friendly and the owner Victor "Pappa" treats you like Family...I definitely recommend this restaurant any day of the week...
google avatar

Charles B.

Yelp
This place has the tastiest jibaritos around and that's saying a lot for the Humbolt Park area. There's a lot of competition. They have a great patio during the summer. Don't expect your dining experience to be quick though. Papa Cache takes their time and they even have a sign inside that says that.
google avatar

Rich G.

Yelp
Their chicken is outstanding - very juicy, one of my favorite places for Jibarito's too. The wait staff is very friendly. I wish the place was a bit brighter but it's definitely a place I will go back to in the future.
google avatar

Nancy B.

Yelp
If you come to chicago, one of the things it's known for is jibaritos. I've never had one so of course I had to try it. I got the steak jibarito and it did not disappoint. My husband got the chicken and I liked the steak better. It definitely had so much flavor and it was a pretty. It portion. I ordered this for delivery since it was far from me and it still came warm!

Jeniffer M.

Yelp
One of my fav PR spots in Chicago. It is BYOB so that's freaking awesome. Can be a long wait time but good food takes time. The 2nd shift manager was a total vibe. It was me and 2 friends and we had a little wait, he made the time go by quick. Sweet and funny, would def be back on service alone. They only have pernil on Saturday, it's the special. It was Bomb. It had crispy pieces like I like, no complaints. Yucca was delicious and garlicky. Arroz con gandules had flavor and the pernil was seasoned so well. Also had a mini jibaroto slider. BOMB. Def a spot I'll be returning to in Chicago.
google avatar

Marcela S.

Yelp
Sinceramente la MEJOR COMIDA Puerto Riqueña en la ciudad ! I highly recommend their Jibaritos Arroz con gandules it's absolutely delicious. I just left and planning my next trip back . The food is fresh to order , authentic and packed with flavor - amazing !!
google avatar

Glaucia M.

Yelp
Great food, super friendly reception from Ivan what gave us the true Puerto Rican ambiance.
google avatar

Mikaela H.

Yelp
anything less than five stars is wrong. the atmosphere. the food. the service. 10/10. was there for lunch & got the one chuleta frita & should've gotten two. there sign said it wasn't fast food but that food came out hot & quick.
google avatar

Melissa M.

Yelp
Friends who live in the area brought me here to introduce me to the chicken jibarito. Well worth the trip. It's so flavorful and surprisingly light. We also got some yucca - which was so garlicky, it was great - and some mixed veg. Highly recommend.
google avatar

Kimberly C.

Yelp
The food is AMAZING!! I literally crave the vegetarian jibarito and have to stop in every 2-3 weeks for my fix. I'm so glad this place is a good 20 minute drive or would eat here WAY too much!! It's absolutely delicious!!

Tina S.

Yelp
Good good good food!! Ordered from Uber eats and I could tell from the aroma alone that it was going to be delicious and I was right! Perfectly seasoned chicken and rice! I also had a mini Steak sandwich on the plantains and it was out of sight! Planning to dine in soon. Highly recommend if you enjoy good food! Was my first time but won't be my last!
google avatar

Sarah R.

Yelp
Mm mm mm This is everything you want out of a hole in the wall experience. The ladies taking my order were great, and the food was amazing. I ordered a jibarito with steak. To die for. It is just walking distance to many other great restaurants, but this will be better (:
google avatar

Dnyce E.

Yelp
The quality of "Puerto Rican Food" in Chgo has dwindled down to a tiny amount of restaurants doing it right. Papas Cache are amongst those few. The Weekend "Lechon" is fuego! Their chuletas,(porkchops) are amazing and seasoned to perfection. The half chicken is my "go to" as it is seasoned with the same flavor from the lechon. The jibarito is also a hit. This is a must and the fact that it is BYOB? I mean a total win win!
google avatar

Damian P.

Yelp
So Puerto Rican food is something I take pride in, and it has to be as equal to what I make at home or better. Well..... how about a hoorah! They did that! The taste and appearance of food is lb point, and they do take you to the down-home taste. A few co-workers let me know that they were good, but I am always a skeptic when it comes to Puerto Rican food. I was wrong. Caches' taste does rival my homemade flavors, and I truly like that. If you feel like a quick bite and not fake flavors, you have to try their menu. It does remind me of flavors from Aguadilla. Maybe it's how they make their sofrito, but I can't be sure. Their jobarritos were a tiny but smaller then I'm use to, but in a restaurant that is very busy, I can see how high the demand is and how they need to crank it up in order to keep up with the demand.not bad at all, and very impressed. The restaurant itself is cute, and is that a word to use? It's clean and very well maintained, and that's a plus for my coming so often.
google avatar

Mayra T.

Yelp
Delicious food that will bring you back home. Great and friendly service .I would highly recommend it!

Tyler T.

Yelp
This restaurant loves their city, and cares deeply for their community. That would be fine and good, but their food proves it. Go outside your comfort zone and try this amazing food with Puerto Rican inspiration. The Jibarito is your go-to while you're here. Don't sleep on Papa's. Period.

Taylor S.

Yelp
My two aunts and I stopped here because the smell from the restaurant was amazing and it looked like a fun place in general - nice lighting, good music, etc. The food was so so good! I got a chicken jibarito and it was amazing. Apparently jibaritos were founded by a Puerto Rican in Chicago (you can't go to Puerto Rico and order them), so getting to try one felt like a very unique food experience. The staff was pleasant too.
google avatar

Jess V.

Yelp
I didn't want to leave Chicago without having a jibarito and I'm so glad I came to this place to try it out! My friend and I sat in their outdoor seating, and the place wasn't too busy on an early Monday night. After our orders were taken by the really kind lady working there, we were given a complimentary white bread basket with butter. I thought this was a nice little treat before our main meal! It didn't take too long for the jibaritos to come out, and just looking at them,,, they looked so delicious & appetizing!!! First off, I thought that the plantains were fried perfectly! They were not hard or greasy, and had a great chew to them. Each bite was so flavorful and the savory, soft steak, crunchy veggies, & rice went together so well. And adding the garlic sauce (I am a garlic lover!!!) was the cherry on top. The portion was generous and it left my friend and I full for a while! When I went inside the restaurant to use the restroom, I saw the rotisserie chicken and it looked so good!!! I wish I could have tried it so if you come here with a friend or group, maybe share the jibarito and a 1/2 chicken. I also thought the location was nice; a lot of murals nearby and you can walk over to the Wicker Park area. Overall, this was one of the best meals that I had during my trip and I definitely recommend coming here to try the famous jibarito! :)
google avatar

Helen P.

Yelp
Everything about this experience was perfect! The service was fast and professional, the food was absolutely amazing for such a reasonable price, we were so satisfied and will definitely be coming back. Jibaritos were to die for.

Matt B.

Yelp
Wonderful place! We've been here just once but will be back to enjoy more food! We got the jibarito and rice

Phoenix M.

Yelp
Great food. Love their Jibarito. They messed up my order on the rice instead of giving me the Puertorican rice they gave me the plain and it was dry and tough. Overall still good.
google avatar

Torwah N.

Yelp
Now we are not questioning whether this is the best Jibarito in the city. I'm questioning whether this is the best meal under 15.00 in US? I eat here weekly, and they don't miss. My go to is the steak Jibarito, steak sandwich, chicken Jibarito, and roasted chicken. You can top that off with any rice you like. Don't take my word for it. Get over here ASAP!
