The Best Vietnamese Restaurants in Dallas and Beyond | Eater Dallas

"Papaya Kitchen is Chef Alan Mai’s great comeback from retirement from the long-standing Oak Lawn restaurant, Green Papaya, that closed in 2019. His return comes with a twist: it’s a to-go only restaurant along Lemmon Avenue. The seasoned chef brings his crowd-favorites-since-1999 like the signature papaya salad, classic phở and bánh xèo, crispy mung bean crepes filled with shrimp, chicken and bean sprouts." - Didi Paterno

Was looking for some good pho and spring rolls, I found this suggestion on Google and I’m so glad I did. I didn’t end up ordering pho, but my food was amazing! The food was delicious, the owner was more than helpful and attentive. Can’t wait until they expand their seating area to bring all my family.

If you're on the hunt for incredible pho and Vietnamese cuisine in Dallas, look no further! This hidden gem offers a fresh and inviting experience that you won't want to miss. The owner, Alan, treated us like royalty with his outstanding service and even surprised us with irresistible complimentary desserts that were simply to die for! Honestly, the toughest decision of the meal was choosing just one dish from the mouthwatering menu. I'm already counting down the days until I can return, not only because the food is absolutely phenomenal but also to support our amazing local restaurateurs. Don't let this spot pass you by!

Food 10/10, authentic and the customer service is great. He even ioffers free dessert twice and bottle of water. Most places would charge for that. Would definitely come back

I stopped at Papaya Kitchen for lunch after my flight out of Dallas was severely delayed. The owner was incredibly warm and friendly and recommended the Vietnamese crepe, which was both delicious and an extremely generous portion. I was also offered free dessert after my meal, a sweet coconut, corn and tapioca pudding. One of the regular customers in the restaurant told me he thought Papaya Kitchen was one of the best spots in Dallas, and honestly, I have to agree! Highly recommended if you are in the area, and it is conveniently located close to the Dallas Love airport. A highlight of my brief time in Dallas for sure.

5/5 ⭐️ ST⭐️RS ⭐️ I AM A FOREVER A LOYAL CUSTOMER HERE. I will always make a stop here when visiting Dallas. If I was a local, this would be my Pho/Shrimp Spring Roll/ Fried Eggroll fix. ATMOSPHERE: It’s a smaller place but the owner stated that they would be expanding this JULY 2025. They are not moving but instead they are expanding with a bigger food hall. Small or not, the place is so clean and well decorated. CUSTOMER SERVICE: we were graced to be served by the owner Alan Mai- Superb! He is excellent at his craft, hardworking, full of passion, and so kind. He greeted us, seated us, and in his expertise recommended us dishes on the menu and how to eat it the “Vietnamese” way. So cool! FOOD: my sister is a broth snob, and she liked the broth- it says a lot. If you are a pho lover, this is the place to go. It’s authentic and delicious. get the fried eggrolls it’s so generous. I’ve been to many restaurants where they skim the meat or they skim the fillings, but not this one, it’s worth every penny it’s delicious and hearty. And the spring rolls freaking delicious and packed with flavor in every bite. *** if you are a spicy pepper lover, like me, ask for the yummy fresh sauce that his sister freshly makes- in the photos ***

Google
This place is truly amazing. The owner is so nice. Gave me free dessert. I was feeling very sick and as soon as I got the chicken and shrimp pho with extra lemons and spicy I instantly felt better. Truly a great place if you want Vietnamese authentic food tell him Alex sent you.

The phoenix has risen from the void left behind when The Green Papaya departed the culinary scene in 2019. Papaya Kitchen brings back the best dishes from the venerable Oak Lawn establishment. The new location is take-away only. The portions are bountiful. The service is super friendly. Thank you Alan for bringing back fresh, authentic Vietnamese meals to the neighborhood!

Google
First time trying papaya kitchen and the food is amazing! I ordered the vegetable fried rice, egg rolls & my boyfriend got the 3 meat fried rice. The owner also added in soup and dessert and they are so good! I’ll definitely be returning you have to give this spot a try. It’s a true local gem!

Yelp
I rarely leave reviews but only upload pictures for restaurants, but I have to leave a review for this restaurant that I accidentally discovered. While going to a nearby LA Fitness, I saw this on the way because I did not eat a dinner yet. I saw a choice between this, Thai Street food next to it, but I decided to walk in here. The place was extremely small with not many tables, but I could find a seat close to the window side. What made me to give this perfect stars for this restaurant is how kind the owner was. He gave me a fresh bottle of Ozarka water, and he was really showing a fantastic service. And the food was great, too. I thought it was little expensive at $18 for a bowl of shrimp noodle, but it was enough portion. So, while I would not normally give this high ranking for a restaurant that is not super fancy, I have to make an exception because the owner's service really made a difference.

Yelp
Fantastic no frills local viet restaurant with great food options and a very kind owner. I was in town on a work trip and stopped by for some asian comfort food, the pho and spring rolls were soooooo good. When I paid my bill and was about the leave, the owner offered some dessert and water for me to enjoy at my hotel!

Yelp
Was not my intention to visit this place but after trying it out, it was worth the price! Customer service and the taste of the food was great!! The ambiance was good!! I never review in yelp, so this review meant something.

Yelp
I am crazy about Papaya Kitchen's "Shrimp Spring Rolls" - plump, juicy shrimps, lovely amount of vermicelli, lettuce, and bean sprouts, and delicious peanut sauce. Efficient online ordering. Welcoming pickup service. So glad this once beloved 'green papaya restaurant' being back. With the now named "Papaya Kitchen" being set up for mainly takeouts! CHEERS!

Mark S.

Yelp
I saw multiple 5 star reviews of this place and now I understand why. The food portions are large and the food itself was delicious. The owner was super friendly and would offer tips and recommendations. It's currently a smaller space so there aren't a ton of options for sitting down and eating, but we were told they're going to be expanding to a larger space relatively soon. Highly recommend going to get your Vietnamese food fix in the area!

Evelyn D.

Yelp
The food was amazing the pork spring rolls were delicious. the pork was very tasty and had a lot of flavor as you add the peanut sauce. And the pho was very flavorful, the broth was very rich and gave the meat (I got beef) a lot of flavor. The service was great! The server was very nice and explained the menu items to us as well. The place was a little small (width size) but they need more room for the kitchen to make us delicious food! I would 100% recommend and come back.

Yelp
Food was excellent done of the best shrimp spring rolls I've ever eaten in Dallas. Service outstanding helped me navigate menu and recommendation excellent. Will definitely go back again.

Yelp
Delicious food. BIG portions. The owner is so nice. It's a a hole in the wall but it gives it its charm. I've been here several times and tried different dishes and it hasn't disappointed. Well priced!

Yelp
This is my first time ever having Pho from here today, I had a very very excellent experience. Thank you to the man that took my order he had a very great attitude. My experience here was just excellent. I will definitely come again to this place. Thank you (:

Yelp
Finally there is a good decent Vietnamese restaurant that only 3 miles away from downtown, and also available on UberEats?? How convenient! Comes with a complimentary dessert is top notch. Strongly recommend!

Yelp
Small establishment. Hole in the wall hidden gem. Amazing. Vermicelli. Fresh. Tasty. Excellent service. Super clean.

Yelp
This my second time ti this restaurant. I always get greeted warmly. The food is fresh, light and tasty. The dining area is small but that is what makes it homey.
google avatar

Marcy A.

Yelp
The sauce on the garlic chicken was delicious and the fresh vegetables were such a nice add compared to other pick up places. There are a few chairs to eat inside. I'll definitely be back.

Laura O.

Yelp
Wow! Everything was fabulous & so fresh tasting, even the sauces! first time here, we love Vietnamese food & we tried couple of appetizers and a few different entrées. Everything was so delicious . We will definitely be ordering take out from here again

Micky K.

Yelp
Have you even tried spring rolls if you haven't tried the ones here? It doesn't matter if it's the chicken, the shrimp, or the pork. They are huge, fresh, and go oh so well with the peanut dipping sauce! Luv luv luv

Yelp
I tried this cozy place for the first time and was very impressed with the flavorful entrees and awesome customer service. The ambiance is more conducive for carry-out however there are a few places to sit and enjoy your food in the establishment. I ordered the Chicken Pho and the Tofu Spring Rolls with Peanut Sauce, both were delicious the peanut sauce had a spicy kick which was a surprise but nothing unbearable. The chicken was tasty and not dry (huge plus) and the veggies for the pho were all fresh. I am excited to have found a great Vietnamese restaurant and plan to return so I can try more items on the menu. Next time I will be sure to take pictures and share.

Yelp
BEST Vietnamese food in Dallas and the man that runs it is the FRIENDLIEST man in Dallas. Love love this place

Yelp
Check this place out! It's amazing and Alan (owner) does a fantastic job of ensuring you have a great experience!. The food is excellent and trust me you will go back again! I enjoy the Chicken or Pork Springs rolls and the Combination Pho - YUM! .
google avatar

Jason H.

Yelp
The owner, Alan, was an incredible person to speak with during dinner. He's from Vietnam and very well traveled...now the food...absolutely outstanding flavors! The Green Papaya salad was bursting with flavor. The shrimp rolls and pork rolls for an appetizer were a wise choice as well! We live 40 miles away but will be back soon! This is a DON'T MISS!
google avatar

Yelp
THEY ARE BACK !! Green papaya is back with a different name! This place was our go to for my sister and I and we were so sad to find out it closed. But my amazing sister found on google. So looking for good Vietnamese food this is the place. It's a pick up and go but has a a cute little bar you can eat there. So intimate little place make you feel like family.
google avatar

Danielle S.

Yelp
Really tasty Vietnamese food with large portions. We had pho, the fried rice, and the pork bowl. Not that the pho was bad...your standard pho. The fried rice and pork bowl had quality meat and was so good as leftovers too

Sam T.

Yelp
One of my favorite places in the area. Some of the nicest owners you'll ever meet and the pork summer roll is absolutely fantastic! Never had a bad experience here. It's wonderful.
google avatar

Zoe R.

Yelp
This place is owned by the original owner of green papaya in oak lawn. It's the same recipes just a smaller menu with the most popular dishes from the original restaurant. The flat chicken noodle plate, spring rolls, peanut sauce and egg rolls are fantastic and authentic to the original green papaya. I highly recommend this restaurant for some authentic and delicious Vietnamese. This is to go style but you can sit at the bar at the front of the store and eat inside. So excited it's back!!!
google avatar

Sarah M.

Yelp
All I can say is, I had been a loyal customer to Green Papaya for 20+ years my husband & I are literally so thrilled they are back.. The food remains fresh, true to it's origin & the staff as always still very pleasant. As far as it being mostly to-go orders with the small space they make it quick and convenient. Alex up front greeted me by first name with a big smile & carried my food out to my car for me. All while being very busy. Highly recommended and I can honestly say we've felt that way from the beginning 20 years back.

Yelp
Papaya Kitchen is now open and used to be Green Papaya in Oaklawn. It is now primarily a take out and catering. I went in and met the owner who is so kind. I had the Pork Vermicelli Bowl with egg rolls and it was fantastic. Will definitely be back.

Kellye K.

Yelp
This place used to be Green Papaya on Oak Lawn, but they have moved to a smaller location. The food is excellent as it always was, and the service is very friendly and welcoming. Seating is limited so be prepared to take your food to go. My pictures are terrible as we had already started eating before I remembered to take them. Highly recommend if you are looking for good Vietnamese food in Dallas.

James W.

Yelp
The food was fantastic, and the service was personalized an top notch. I will definitely be going back a lot. Thank you Alan!

M L.

Yelp
My coworkers and I are on a business trip and we stopped by this restaurant on our way to Dallas Love airport. The owner is very hospitable. The food is delicious. The chicken is tender, the flavors are on point, and veggies portion is generous. The owner was so nice, dessert on the house. It was a banana, tapioca, coconut puddling. Highly recommend giving this restaurant a try. The seating is limited. It looks like it mostly a takeout place.

Shars S.

Yelp
I was greeted with a huge smile, a complimentary drink and extreme kindness. The food was delicious, the portions were huge. Worth every penny and I will be back.
google avatar

Alexis S.

Yelp
Fresh, good portions. Maybe better than when it was on oaklawn. Shrimp spring rolls and pho are go tos.
google avatar

Raphael R.

Yelp
wow wow wow and wow this place is so so so good the portions are huge the food is awesome the service is unlike any other anywhere the owner is so attentive and goes outta of his way to make you feel comfortable I honestly felt like I was at a family members house having dinner total comfort the prices are unreal because of the affordability can't say enough about this place ya gotta go check it out and experience real hospitality and service a++++++
google avatar

Sara S.

Yelp
The food is delicious! The service is always great and they have a nice selection to choose from. Highly recommend

Penny G.

Yelp
I am so glad that Alan has returned with the original recipes and staff that we all know and love! The spring rolls and the cabbage salad, both my faves, were delicious! I will come back more and more. This is pure pick up, not a setting for a sit down, client lunch like in the past. But prayers were answered with our favorite Vietnamese food coming back. All my best to the team.
google avatar

Helen T.

Yelp
Great foods and large potions. They don't skimp! We ordered #11, 18 and 24. Delicious! Attentive but not intrusive service. The owners were super sweet offering drinks (bottled water, canned Coca Cola and Sprite) and desserts on the house. Limited seatings inside though. Overall, great experience. We will come back soon!
google avatar

Francis T.

Yelp
This was our first stop here in Dallas after a long travel day from California. Owner Alan greeted us warmly. It looks like they do mostly takeout, however, there were a few stools at counter height along the front window - perfect for an early dinner. The food did not disappoint. We ordered two rice plates - chicken and flank steak. The meat was cooked to perfection - juicy and tender. The plates were HUGE - enough for two! Fried spring rolls were pleasingly crispy and packed full of meat. The sweet corn and red bean desserts were refreshing. Alan was the perfect host and we were very happy to support a locally owned business where the owner really cares about his guests!

Ruth R.

Yelp
A very small space, but everything else is big: food portions, flavor, service. This is an excellent restaurant!!
google avatar

Michael G.

Yelp
Long time customer from the Oaklawn location. Glad they are back and are offering most of the original menu items. I ordered the beef flat noodle and an order of their shrimp spring rolls. Both were excellent. They had all the extras that I enjoy. Fish sauce, red chili and the sauce they offer with the flat noodle. It's similar to a soy sauce. Placed order over the phone and it was ready when I arrived. I'll be back to placing pick up orders!

Catrina P.

Yelp
Ordered the Tropical Spring Rolls and Fried Egg Rolls. It was so good we ordered a 2nd order of the Tropical Spring Rolls! Great place to get a meal while your car is being detailed.

Vara K.

Yelp
Freshly made delicious food! Small place, but very attentive service. Several dishes on the menu that were new to me and definitely worth trying! We will be back soon.

Judith M.

Yelp
So happy Allen (of the Green Papaya fame) is back with the same excellent food! If I still lived in Dallas I would eat there everyday! The food was excellent and Allen's company was delightful!

Ricardo W.

Yelp
Food and Service are GREAT!!! The owner offered us a free drink because of his grand opening! He recommend different food and engaged as we ate. Ordered the egg rolls and Pork and Beef bowls and they were so good!!! Place is 10/10! Thank you Alan for the experience.

Vanessa B.

Yelp
We are so happy you are back! You were missed! The garlic tofu is unbelievable! And, they have the best peanut sauce! Service is great and the owners are so friendly.
google avatar

Craig P.

Yelp
They are back--the amazing food as well as the amazing service. The food is just as good as it was in their first, 20-year location and the staff is as sweet and attentive as ever. They will remember you if you come back, even what you ordered. We had shrimp spring rolls with their DELICIOUS peanut sauce and chicken fried rice and the #19. It all came out super fast, super hot and everything tasted so fresh. They are geared toward an "order online and pick-up" set up, so if you want to eat there, there are only a few seats at a counter. If you were a former regular, you will be thrilled they are back. If you choose to give them a try for the first time, you'll be thrilled and YOU'LL be back!!
google avatar

Yelp
Such an incredible Dallas gem is back with a new take-out focused menu. I've been missing them since they closed 5 years ago. It's back and better than ever! The best peanut sauce I've had in my life. The owners and service are incredible! There are a few spots at a bar along the window for dine-in. Run, don't walk to get here!

Duyen D.

Yelp
Had the Springrolls, service was very good! It is a smaller restaurant, but had a nice time.

Vicky L.

Yelp
I got takeout here for myself and my boyfriend and it was amazing! We ordered the cha gio egg rolls, bun thit nuong, tofu noodle stir fry, honey ginger iced tea, and cheesecake. The price/food quantity ratio is great. I loved everything, but I am still thinking about the cha gio over a day later. Each roll is HUGE and I made 1.5 meals out of one order. They were so savory and flavorful, perfectly crispy. The pickled vegetables were so good that I ate them straight after finishing the cha gio. Online ordering was efficient and quick (got my order right on time), the staff were so nice to me as well when I came to pick up the order. Parking is super easy in the plaza. What's not to like?

Scot A.

Yelp
The food and service were five star to say the least. We had the 11,13, and 16. All were incredible. Being a mixed bowl of ingredients you'd expect to have one major flavor. Each ingredient had their own unique taste. Service was incredibly fast and polite. Hats off!

Melissa S.

Yelp
These are the same owners as the old Green Papaya (not plant based) off Oak Lawn! I am SO happy to see these folks return to the area! I enjoyed the fried egg rolls (#1), shrimp spring rolls (#2), and chicken pho (#26). It's all just like I remember. They even gave me a sample of the durian sticky rice, which was a nice sweet treat and then helped me to my car. Hoping that the community finds and supports these guys! Welcome back to Oak Lawn area, Papaya Kitchen! You have been missed

Savana R.

Yelp
This is the new restaurant from the original green papaya owner and it is just as good, honestly somehow even better, than the OG Green Papaya on Oaklawn. The food is consistently delicious and their peanut sauce is my personal favorite and makes everything so amazing!!!! Best Vietnamese food in Dallas hands down and Alan, the owner, is so kind!! All the original chefs from Green Papaya are working there now as well, we are so happy it's back!!!!
