Best Places to Get Cake Slices in Seattle | Eater Seattle

"No one could expect what was in store when the Seattle restaurant luminary Rachel Yang of Joule and Revel announced she was opening a cake shop with Gabby Park of Saint Bread. The pair have built a gourmet but whimsical cakery. The cakes are baked in slab-shaped sheet cakes and come in Asian-inspired flavor that rotate seasonally, with standby flavors like their Bluebe — a lemon sponge with blueberry compote and violet ube icing. there is also the Keel Bill with blackberry jam, lychee gel, and raspberry buttercream. It also keeps a vegan and gluten-free option available at all times. The delicate texture and refined flavors available at this Stone Way-based store makes it feel like grabbing a slice of the best wedding cake you ever had, any time you want." - Kurt Suchman

Paper Cake shop offers a truly unique experience, and some absolutely beautiful cakes, but unfortunately when it came to the taste and texture of the cakes themselves, myself and the others in my party found them lacking. The buttercream was quite thick and oily, and didn't carry much flavor. The cake bases themselves were more on the dry side and again, didn't carry the flavor they claimed to have in the titles. The staff were wonderful, the atmosphere was beautiful and fun, but I don't think we'll be returning. I think it's definitely worth a try - after all everyone has different likes & dislikes and at the very least, they are creating a wonderful atmosphere with absolutely gorgeous works of art.

First means of business, HAVE AN OPEN MIND! This isn’t your typical dessert shop with your typical flavors. Maybe more for the artisan “palette”. I was skeptical…but…this was fantastic! Light, soft, such a diversity of flavor. I had two different types of cake (see the pictures) and I wish I could have eaten each flavor! To the owners, PLEASE make your version of carrot cake, pleaseeeeeee! I look forward to returning soon! 맛있어요, 고맙습니다! 🙂

Wow I’m so blown away by these cakes! At first I was worried since some people said the cakes were too sweet. However, as an Asian American, I felt the sweetness level was perfect! I am typically not a fan of buttercream but I devoured every bit on these cakes. We loved their Spring Forward (matcha raspberry), the Thai Tea, the Yoka Miso Chocolate (best chocolate cake ever??), and Keel Bill (omg the Lychee gel was phenomenal with the light lemon flavor and genius)! Of all the ones we tried, Keel Bill might be most suited for Asian palates. The Jewel Box was perfect for a birthday celebration and any occasion so we’ll be back soon!

Google
Cake slices are too pretty to eat. And so delicious! I've never had anything like it. Unique flavor combinations and I really liked how they weren't too sweet either. The super cool girl up front recommended a tea and although I forgot the name of the fruit , it was one of the most delicious tea I've had and it complimented the cake slice. Gorgeous cakes and the interior of the cake shop is gorgeous.

Google
I got chocolate Carmel hazelnut cake and match raspberry one. The look of the piping and cake was good but the taste not so much. I was kinda disappointed after seeing the hype for the place. Cake tasted crumbly and icing was too thick and buttery.

Google
I love these cakes! I make sure to stop in every time I visit from LA. They always have such unique and delicious flavor combinations that are so balanced and sweet, but not too sweet. Don’t sleep on the drinks either, the brown sugar bergamot iced is my fave! The space itself is so beautifully designed and the staff have always been so kind and generous. I recommend throwing some city pop in the earbuds to elevate the experience. Ps. I see some negative reviews saying the price is high for the size. I disagree, you would easily pay $12-15 for a slice this size here in LA. If you want to pay $3 for a slab of overmixed sugar with filling from a tub, go to a grocery store. If you want a gorgeous looking cake made with complex flavor combinations , go to Paper Cake Shop! Please open one in LA 😁

Yelp
Super cute interior. I tried the sesame cake -- it had a bold sesame flavor with a kick of spice. The sesame flavor was spot on. Unfortunately, it was too sweet for me. Sweetness level was 7/10 with 10 being super sweet. The chai yuzu latte was refreshing -- I enjoyed it more than the traditional chai.

Yelp
I came to paper cake shop to fulfill my sweet tooth and it did just that!! I love the cute interior and also that they're open later so I can still get a sweet treat after work. The inside was clean and the staff were nice!! I ordered three cakes and the standout was definitely the mango black tea!! This one is an earl grey sponge with orange cream and mango! It tasted really bright and was the favorite between my friend and I. It may be because we ordered three, but it got almost too sweet for us. I recommend sharing between friends! We also thought not every flavor stood out in the cakes but it was good overall.

Yelp
Perfect little cake shop if you want to splurge a little or have a place to sit down and catch up with friends. I had a small Paper Cake phase and purchased togo on several occasions including for a Chinese New Year dinner. The pieces are beautifully decorated, but very small (maybe 2 by 2.5 in ish). There's usually one seasonal flavor. Their togo boxes are horrible so if you really want to preserve your cake maybe bring your own box. ALSO I saved a slice in the fridge overnight and the texture became really weird in the morning. I would just eat it in one sitting. I've tried several flavors and POG was my favorite, it had a very strong punch of passionfruit guava/did not taste artificial. KEEL BILL's raspberry and lychee flavors stood out the most, personally did not like the fruit loop addition (the textures clashed a little). Personally would not come again with such high pricing and small quantity unless I wanted to go above and beyond at a celebration.

Yelp
The interior is cute and the vegan cake was unlike anything I'd ever had. Wildly beautiful and very complex and intense flavor. I loved it.

Yelp
Really cute spot and very yummy cakes! We came towards the end of the day on a Friday evening and they still had a lot of flavors left. There were a lot of people hanging around and chatting, and it seemed like a good spot to catch up with friends and unwind from the week, as there was plenty of comfortable seating. We ordered four slices of cake to split between the four of us. The POG was my favorite, as the tangy fruit flavors cut through the sweetness really well. The Keel Bill was pretty good too, but I wish there was more lychee flavor throughout the cake, as pretty much all of the lychee flavor was condensed into one little half slice of lychee fruit on top. The Ube Mocha cake was a bit dry, and while I really liked the Snack Aisle flavor, the pretzels on top of the cake were really stale and a bit unappetizing. Overall, it was a cute shop with unique Asian-inspired flavors. None of the cakes were too sweet (the highest praise for Asian desserts), and I'd be interested in trying some of their other flavors as well!

Yelp
This spot is amazing! I love the aesthetic and such a great place to get things done. They're also dog friendly so I was able to bring my pups ayin for a few hours and have some delicious drinks. Their menu is very unique and refreshing, and not overly sweet (drink wise). I tried their current limited edition item which was a yuzu style ice cream cake! Which surprisingly kept well on my walk home across the street. The also offer little cute candles and party favors if needed for a little birthday delivery. So happy this little spot popped up in the neighborhood!

Yelp
Really good and cute cakes! We came right at opening time and were the first in line. All their cakes are visible on display, and we just wanted a bite so we settled for the kill bill. The cake was really good! Moist, not too sweet, and every part was delicious. The raspberry and lemon balanced each other out well, and it was a heavenly bite. These cakes are quite expensive for the size though. It's a good place to sit at since the ambiance is also nice!
google avatar

Vicki S.

Yelp
We were very pleased with the taste and texture of this cake. It was moist and the flavors popped. On average, the price of their cakes are probably $10-20 more than other cake shops around town when comparing the size. However, I feel that the convenience of the shop location to where I live justifies it and the unique flavor offerings and quality ingredients are also what sets this cake shop apart. Will consider getting my next special occasion cake here again.

Yelp
Delicious and unique flavors. Rotating menu that makes you come back. Service is fast and friendly. Space is great for gathering groups to sit and chat. It's lovely to enjoy the space and cake. Drinks are delicious too!

Yelp
Honestly really wanted to like this place and have been seeing stuff on social. API owned small business, right in Fremont, street parking (watch the signs for times), there's construction happening across the way so be aware as a you are walking. The young lady who was helping out an older lady who wanted coffee and pastries didn't seem to know her job nor like her job, she really couldn't share what made these cakes special or different and I jumped in to elaborate on why it's unique and the gal was not helpful, management should really review who they hire and how they train. What could and should have been a customer was instead directed towards another establishment. We got two slices, one of the matcha and the pink one that was bday I believe. Both weren't flavorful nor moist. It was $19 for two slices and I don't believe the quality of the cake warrants that cost personally.
google avatar

Tori H.

Yelp
I came here on a Sunday afternoon, and it was pretty quiet. There is no parking lot, so we street packed and walked about 2 blocks. We tried the matcha cake slice and surprised to find that it was plant-based!! It was a little crumbly but really great flavor. They also have gf options. Their drinks were standard but also had interesting twists on matcha and tea lattes. We tried the strawberry rhubarb matcha and it was good when mixed! The staff are so nice and we are definitely coming back for occasion cakes or an excuse to get out of the house.

Yelp
The sheet cakes were so beautiful I had a hard time choosing which to get. The line was long but I think it was worth it!

Yelp
The absolute cutest little Asian inspired bakery! Everything looked so good that we ended up getting one slice of each flavor! Not too much seating inside but it is decorated so well. Get there early though, we went 2 hours after they opened and they were already running low on some of the cakes. Black pink: I was a little skeptical about this one but the sesame wasn't overpowering at all! The guava gelee was the highlight and added a slight freshness to it! Keel bill: thought the cake itself was a little dry but I loved the lychee touch to it! This one was so cute and the lemon cake with blackberry was a splendid combo!! Ube mocha: I wasn't the biggest fan of this one as the espresso flavor was so strong. But if you like coffee flavor I'm sure you'll love this with the ube flavor! Mango royale: this one was my least favorite. I felt that the graham cracker buttercream was overpowering and you couldn't taste the mango as much! Loved the lime and coconut addition to this one Cardi P: if you've ever had rasmalai (an Indian dessert) this tastes exactly like that!! Tastes like an Indian cake with the pistachio and cardomom. I personally loved this even though it wasn't as fluffy and it was gluten freee!

Yelp
Local cake shop that is WOC / Asian American owned that brings flavors from childhood onto a sweet slice on a plate. It makes my heart so happy. I really enjoyed seeing all the Asian flavors. Definitely coming back for more!! The shop is SO cute and colorful with pink chairs. There's lot of space to sit and chat. I was able to find street parking across the street.

Yelp
This is a cute cake shop located on Stone Way between Wallingford and Fremont. On my latest stop, I had the POG, which is an orange cake, with passion fruit guava and cream cheese buttercream filling. The cake was moist and filling was a nice balance of tart and sweet. On a previous visit, I enjoyed the Ube Mocha and was not disappointed. I'm finding myself headed to Paper Cake when I learn that a new cake has been added to the rotation - that marketing works on me! The cakes are inventive and pretty to look at. For those looking for a plant based and gluten free option - they have that too! Another plus for me is the busy-ness of the cakes with different textures, flavors and crunchy toppings. I'm also a fan of having fruit in my dessert. I've gone in the evenings and was able to find street parking and avoid any lines. Staff are welcoming and friendly. It's a nice addition to the neighborhood and it's great to have another cake slice option in the northend.

Yelp
Aesthetic cakes with cute names. I wish they tasted as good as they looked, but all 4 cake slices were incredibly dry and too sweet for my taste. Flavors were ok. Service was friendly and the lines can get relatively long. I ordered the following and am including their appealing written descriptions (though I don't feel like the taste / flavors lived up to it): *Keel Bill - lemon cake, blackberry jam, lychee gel, raspberry buttercream, Froot Loops *Big Bang - chocolate cake, tahini layer, red Miso caramel, milk chocolate buttercream, sesame brittle *Blackpink - vanilla cake, Anna & Rick's quince, black sesame Oreo buttercream, guava gelee *Cardi P - coconut cake, yuja marmalade, cardamom pistachio buttercream

Yelp
A one-of-kind shop with unique flavors - a must try if you love cakes! What I love most about this place, asides from its cute and cozy decor, is that you won't be able to find cakes of these flavors anywhere else. It's very quiet in the afternoon and large cake orders are more common than individual. To me that is a shame because it's a lovely place to relax and have a chat - high tea vibes! There are a few plugs for you to charge devices but not a lot of people sit down. Cakes on the sweet side? Yes. I think it could be overwhelmingly sweet for the elderly or those used to lighter Asian desserts. I still think it's worth a try. Their cakes are very creative and has well-balanced flavors. And as their flavors keeps changing, it's only going to get better.

Yelp
Wow! I'm surprised to see all of the negative comments and poor ratings for this woman & Asian owned local business. I stumbled upon Paper Cake on Wednesday evening while looking for cake shops in the Seattle area. Luckily, I found Paper Cake Shop and was able to order online that same night for a birthday celebration for two friends the next day. They had an assortment of different kind of cakes with Asian influence. I placed the order online Wednesday night for the Ube Chocolate cake, with my preferred pick-up time, and was contacted Thursday morning confirming that they received my order. Online, it says a message will cost $5 more and they need at least 3 business days, but to my surprise they were able to accommodate my happy birthday message. The store was easily accessible, right off Stone way, which made it easy to park quickly and run in. I was greeted by one of the workers quickly and friendly. The store was super cute and modern. I'd love to stop by for a slice of cake next time I'm in the area. Note: you can only tip online when you order the cake, or with cash in-person. Unfortunately, I forgot to tip online and didn't have cash on me when I picked up. Highly recommend supporting this place!

Yelp
As some others have pointed out, I wish these cakes tasted as good as they look. Alas, thought everything was so-so overall. Had a much better ube cake from the same chef at Joule a few days later! Four of us stopped in for some treats after dinner nearby and tried the Cardi P, the Keel Bill and the Black Pink. They were all solid, but not amazing. Texture was not that moist and the cakes were more sugary than flavorful. The quince jam in one of them was awesome, though. Ambiance is cute and there is plenty of seating. 3.5 stars.

Yelp
Absolutely delightful in each way. Delicious cake (and I have to say you keep getting better), great design and attention to detail, and the team working here are so kind and helpful. 10/5
google avatar

Katherine L.

Yelp
I was pleasantly surprised by this shop and the cakes despite the mediocre reviews. I think the lack of stars is likely due to overhyped social media presence and people being disappointed. Maybe I just got lucky with the flavors I chose but the cakes were really tasty- the ones I got were yummy- keel bill and mango royale. Not dry at all and very tasty; love the hint of saltiness in the mango one. Reminded me of mango sticky rice. I took off one star bc the cakes really are way pricey. $9 for a slice is pretty high. Also the packaging left a lot to be desired. If I'm paying $9 a slice at least have some nicer packaging so I don't have to worry that the cakes will get ruined or smushed. It was like Chinese takeout boxes.... I think this is a try once and I'm good type of shop. Or maybe for a special occasion- I wish they did samplers or something instead of only selling sheet cakes.

Yelp
Ube Mocha is my top choice as the flavors go really well together. The Spring Forward didn't have enough matcha taste and it's a little bit too sweet with the strawberry jam. The snack aisle I thought my kids would love it but they don't like the flavor at all. The peanut butter is too strong and overall the cake is dry and heavy. The highlight was actually the Fez Green Matcha, the mint enhances the drink it is both energizing and soothing.
google avatar

Wendy K.

Yelp
Finally made it to Paper Cake nice to see a dessert spot open later. Came mainly for the Black Lagoon cause I'm a passionfruit fan. It didn't disappoint the pineapple filling and passionfruit gelee added freshness and tartness to balance out the sweetness of the other ingredients. Such a cute space. Love the aesthetics. Welcoming and natural lighting from the windows. Great service and friendly!

Yelp
Perhaps the most wonderful thing about this place, is that it's everything you expect, and beyond expectations. A cake shop is all about the cake. Let's face it, yes, the experience matters. The ambiance when you walk in, helps set the mood, the color of the walls, the contrast of the floor, the chairs and tables, the positions of where everything is.. matters. But what really matters.. is the cake. Cake by the slice is hard to come by. There was once a wonderful shoppe in Fremont that served it by the slice, cash only. That place is now a shadow of itself, and the city yearns for a better slice. Welcome Paper Cake. A passion project that offers moist, balanced crumb, two layer sheet cake slices. The flavor profiles beg you to try. On my plate tonight was "Big Bang"... a delightfully tasty chocolate, with hints of Tahini, Caramel , a buttercream center, enrobed in chocolate buttercream, and what I believe, house made Sesame cracker on top. I believe in the one spoon/fork tasting method.. aka, you load all the elements into a single bite. This is the way. The different layers of flavor will reach your every inch of your tastebuds at different times, creating a real dessert enjoyment experience. Imagine every bite a combination of sweet, salty, light, saucy, wet, dry, moist... all at one. Service also matters, you want someone who knows what the offerings are... what makes each cake slice unique. Tonight... just any other night... the person behind the counter was Rachel Yang. Yes, the chef/co-owner of of Joule and Revel, the force of amazing food, was here to personally give me the rundown of of each cake. So this place is great, and gives Seattle a wonderful slices of cake to chew on.

Yelp
I showed up 90 minutes after the grand opening (9/20/23) and was rather surprised that I had no challenge with street parking and there was no crazy long line out to the sidewalk. I literally had no clue about Paper Cake Shop. I did not attend the pop up, but features via social media and local publications caught my attention. Definitely my first visit here was completely out of total curiosity. They are located next door to Doce Donut Shop and the newest addition to the sweet tooth offerings on the lengthy Stone Way vicinity in Seattle's Wallingford/Fremont neighborhoods. Other examples include nearby Seattle Pops, Heuk Hwa Dang, Aroom Coffee, Midnight Cookie, and Sea Wolf Bakers. Upon entering, this spot had a nice modern aesthetic, cafe seating with plentiful natural light. Love the afternoon to evening hours with innovative cake slices and beverages available from 2-9pm! I was able to snag the last slice of Big Bang for me and a slice of Keel Bill for The Homie ($9 each). This was nicely packaged on individual compostable plates placed in a takeout window box. Big Bang was chocolate cake with tahini layer, red miso caramel, milk chocolate buttercream and sesame brittle. I found the red miso caramel to be a bit overpowering. The sesame brittle could be sold by small pouches with its outstanding flavor and texture. Keel Bill was lemon cake with blackberry jam, lychee gel, raspberry buttercream, and Froot Loops. The Homie enjoyed the overall flavor. Eye catching, creative rectangular cake layer slices.

Yelp
Finally a decent cake shop not in south Seattle! The cakes are super pretty and I didn't have any problems with the cake not being moist enough. There was plenty of buttercream and jam filling that kept me satisfied. I will say the cakes are very expensive at $9 a small slice. Because of this, I'd probably wouldn't come here as often as I would like. The drinks are okay, got the matcha strawberry but I don't think I would order it again.

Yelp
Saw this cute place on TikTok and decided to visit! AMBIANCE: The interior is super cute and I love the color palette that was chosen Lots of space and warm vibes. FOOD: For $9-10, it is on the pricier side for a small piece of cake. I'm okay paying a higher premium if the cake was phenomenal but the thing is, the cake we had was just OKAY. The menu mentioned the Big Bang having a tahini layer with red miso caramel as the Asian influenced flavors but personally for me those flavors didn't come through. It tasted like a normal salted caramel chocolate cake. Nothing special. I also want to mention that the cake layer wasn't as moist as I would have expected it to be but that could also just be the style of the cake? Personally for me, I think the focus went too much into the presentation when there should have been focus on the cakes' taste first. SERVICE: Quick and easy! You just go to the order counter to order :) Overall, this place and concept have a lot of potential but right now, I just feel like the cakes are sort of lacking a special taste factor that would make me want to come back for more.
google avatar

Rissa G.

Yelp
We ordered one of each flavor and thoroughly enjoyed each slice. The cakes were moist, deliciously sweet (and not excessively so), and had Asian inspired flavors that were unique. The designs are beautiful too. I would definitely bring these cakes to a special occasion for everyone to enjoy. When I picked up the cakes, the service was attentive, welcoming and helpful. I'll definitely be back soon!

Yelp
I mean, look at the layers of these cakes!! Vegan and gluten free for most of the assortment and you couldn't taste the difference. I've tried three different cakes and each has been extremely unique in the flavor profiles and fun toppings. It's perfectly individualized, packaged, and plated for a small 2 person share or whole dessert for 1. You won't get a sugar high from over sweetness or undoubtedly full with cake carbs - it's so light and easy to devour. Staff was welcoming and informative on all the cakes intricate layers. The ambience was warm and inviting. Perfect spot to work remote, grab a coffee, and a sweet treat. Or order a large batch for a work or dinner party event. Happy for this perfect addition to the neighborhood!

Yelp
I'm so glad my best friend recommended this place to me! The drinks and cakes were amazing! The cakes are all interesting flavors that you don't typically find elsewhere and there are not too many so it's not overwhelming to make a choice. The drinks were really good, I got the bergamot and brown sugar iced tea and it was not too sweet but had a nice floral flavor. The lady was really nice and she even agreed to take pictures of us! The interior is very cute with pink and blue themes and an area with couches and plants that's really cozy. Definitely coming back to try all the cake flavors!!

Yelp
This is definitely a more unique take on cakes, that was quite interesting. I've seen this place on the internet and it intrigued me seeing their unique flavors, and finding out the shop is open until 9. It's hard to find bakeries in Seattle open later so we were happy to be able to stop by after dinner. It was around 8:30pm during the week so we easily found parking, though it may be tough during busier hours. The inside was small, clean, and welcoming with a couple seats to be able to sit down and enjoy your cakes. We ordered 2 to-go with them being some of the last of our slices left since they were closing in an hour. The cakes were a perfect size for one person, but quite small for the price. They also have a couple rotating seasonal flavors, for ours it was a peanut butter chocolate slice. For the cakes they were definitely interesting, I enjoyed the flavors but after a few bites I kind of had enough of them. The cakes were also definitely better room temperature, putting them in the fridge dried them out. Overall I thought this was a cute shop with interesting cakes that I would recommend trying at least once.

Yelp
Got there right before opening and there was already a line. I wished there were more vegan options, The cake was very soft and I loved the Asian inspired flavors. The vegan cake was matcha flavored, not too bitter, not too sweet. I loved the berry filling which added another layer to the cake.

Yelp
I saw this place and checked it out. It's a Cake Shop with a little extra added. Just take a look at the menu and you'll see how the cakes are laid out. I looked around and there was a descent amount of people inside hanging out. I was told about the cakes available and that was great because I had idea what I was looking at. I ended up buying the Keel Bill. First bit I had no idea what I was tasting....took another bite with the blackberry Jam and then the taste starting coming together. I'm use to cheap cake....just throw it in the oven....frost it and let's go. Paper Cake gives you all kinds of flavor in one bite. If you wanna try something different....swing by

Yelp
Food: 2 stars Aesthetics/presentation/vibes: 4-5 stars Was super excited to try this spot because I have a huge sweet tooth and more options for Asian leaning flavors is always exciting, but this was a big miss for me (and the two friends I came with!). We were the first people there when they opened at 2:00 so had the first pick of everything, and while they each look phenomenal, the taste, across the board, left much to be desired. Matcha is my favorite, and I love salty desserts, but this matcha cake was out of control. It was way too salty, and not in a refreshingly daring way--more like in a way where the recipe should seriously be revisited (obviously imo). The Black Pink cake tasted like a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. A basic one. I love black sesame, but sadly it reads as peanut butter when paired with the jam in this cake. Making it even more "sandwichy" is the super dry cake. Literally like mildly stale bread. The cake was this dry texture across all the three flavors we had. Neither of my friends enjoyed any of them, and the first comment all of us had was either "holy crap this is salty" re: the matcha one, or "why is the cake so dry??" I'm currently only attempting to finish them off because I hate to waste food, but it's tough. I would not recommend people to try this cake. Also, at $9 a slice, $10 with tax, these products should be anything but mid. Pretty terrible value. I'd be happy to come back and try it again in the future if I hear news of some recipe revamping.

Yelp
paper cake shop! we tried the chocolate cake with red miso caramel and the lemon cake with blackberry jam and lychee! both were pretty sapid but i definitely like the lemon better. very moist and good flavor, but nine bucks a slice is a bit too much for me!

Yelp
These cakes are asian in flavor, but not asian in style. Cardi P was on the sweeter side, the sweetness overpowered the more subtle asian flavors. The blackpink black sesame had a good flavor. The cakes themselves are more dense and not that moist, the buttercream was also quite dense. As a frequenter of Asian bakeries, I was expecting a lighter moist cake with an equally light and airy cream. Presentation is very nice. The slices were $9-10, a little on pricey side.

Yelp
So glad I was able to visit this new cake shop! I already can tell it will be a bit. It's very cozy and aesthetic. Love the K-pop vibes. They have unique Asian flavors such as matcha, azuki and sesame. I asked if any cakes were seasonal and for the most part they all are so if you see something you like, hurry and get some! I like the unique flavor combos and the light texture. Not too sweet! Looks like a great spot to study and meet up with people. Looking forward to coming back!

Yelp
The Big Bang choco cake was light, airy, interesting. The mango coconut cake was dense, too sweet, and had large chunks of crumble which didn't balance with the already sweet cake. Pretty but not so tasty.

Yelp
My cousin and I specifically made a trip to Paper Cake Shop to try the Black Lagoon! We got there at exactly 2pm right when they opened and was surprised to see that there was only 3 people in front of us. Lucky us! All the cakes were decorated beautifully which made it tempting to want to try all the flavors but because they were a kinda pricey we only got two flavors. The Black Lagoon was light and not too sweet and surprisingly went well with the pineapple marmalade. The passion fruit on top was good but I'm not sure needed to be part of the cake? The Keel Bill was delicious and the flavor combination is something the most familiar but with a twist. I'm glad that Paper Cake Shop opened in the Fremont area and will definitely plan to stop by again when I'm in the area!

Yelp
THIS IS JUST FOR THE SERVICE: I was in the store for less than 5 minutes, with my dog and a friend - in that time I was given service which made me feel like we were a burden on the woman behind the counter. We were there for their ice cream cake special, which they explicitly advertise should be eaten there... we were not given the option to sit and when I let them know we would like to eat our ice cream cake there, we were met with a swift moving of the cake from the box to a plate with not so much a smile or a word - almost like it was a burden or we were not wanted. The interaction was so uncomfortable, and rude, that my friend decided not to buy a slice and wanted to leave. I understand my dog was vocal while in the store but we were working on getting him to stop whining and he was settling down by the time we got the cake slice - again, less than 5 minutes we were even in the shop!! I dont know if she doesn't like dogs or that's her demeanor to everyone but I left wishing I left my cake slices behind because now it is no longer enjoyable as I wanted it to be. I have been here a few times with my dog and it has never been a problem or seemed like an issue. I will not be back to a shop that costs me $18 for two slices of cake (including tip) and I didn't even receive any service but attitude. Not even a thank you.

Yelp
The service was really good! But, the cake was too sweet. Although the flavor combination looked interesting the cake tasted like any ordinary lemon cake with blueberries. Kinda disappointed.

Yelp
Was excited to see this Asian-inspired cake shop open up in the neighborhood! Tried the Cardi P (pistachio yuzu) cake; the flavor combination was unique and not too sweet, though the cake layers were a little crumbly (also possibly because I ordered to-go and left it out for several hours). There isn't much seating, but I saw a couple people studying. I love their concept and creative flavors, but it didn't blow me away either. $9 for a slice of cake is pretty steep, but I could see myself coming back for special occasions and trying some of their other flavors!

Yelp
Cute cakes with very sophisticated and inventive (and not too sweet!) flavor profiles - what more could you ask for? I am a fan and can't wait to retwhen I'm back in Seattle.

Yelp
Delicious and fascinating combinations of flavors. The cake is soft and moist and the frosting is amazing. I want to go back!

Yelp
Had the most amazing cake at the Freemont Crab Festival. Keel Bill cake. Would come back when store opens.

Yelp
i had a lovely time when i came in for the first time. i bought a slice of the keel bill and the cardi p. the ambience of this store is so lovely with all of the greens and pinks as well as the decor. the worker helping me was so sweet in helping me decide what to try first and she did not disappoint!! the keel bill was a bit too sweet for my liking but was well balanced with tartness and texture. i would definitely come back to try their other flavors as they always rotate what they have :))

Yelp
This place looked so good on instagram but it was so disappointing IRL. Cakes were dry and also tiny for $9 a slice. I got Black Pink and Cardi P one slice each and they were not the same size. Cardi P was even smaller. Someone mentioned it too but it seems like they use a cheap compostable take out container for up to 3 slices. After spending over $20, I would expect to see cakes in a better box even in a plain brown box that most bakeries and donut shops use. Flavors were too much. For Cardi P, yuzu and pistachio would have been enough but adding cardamom was too much. For Black Pink, vanilla cake and black sesame Oreo buttercream would have been enough but adding quince was too much. The ingredients were not harmonious together and the cakes had...an experimental taste. The first time I tried, I could not have more than a bite of each cake. I would not recommend this place. I did see the bad reviews but I was curious so I still wanted to try. I think trying once is good and not trying is better, saving your money and time.

Yelp
Really cute inside, but cake fell pretty flat for me. We got the coconut cake but it had a doughy texture I wasn't personally a fan of. Would come back to sit and catch up with a friend and love that it's open late!

Yelp
Paper Cake Shop makes me believe in good ol' sayings again: DESSERT FIRST. Cake is not just a food, it's an emotion. happiness is cake. The juiciest of fruits. The luxuriousness of texture. The cloudiest.. moist cake. The thing is... there's a flavor for all. What's to beef about? Genuine folks behind these beauties and skillful hands involved. Can't wait for my next bites! Excited for the fact you can put in a full birthday cake order 30 minutes ahead and if you need writing on it-- 72 hours, fair game and definitely worth it. Highly recommend checking out this spot, bring your favorite person, get cozied up and celebrate anything / everything.
