I really enjoyed this bar. It is so pretty inside. The music selection is a great mix between pop music, r&b, and much more. The drinks were good! Mine came in a cute little cat. They have board games you can play while enjoying your drink. 10/10 I would recommend.

Great bar! Tonight was our first time visiting and you could tell it was a lot busier than usual due to a wedding part followed by Drag-Bingo. A couple of our orders were wrong but after notifying someone it was quickly fixed. All in all great atmosphere, decent food, fun drinks, and friendly staff. I will definitely be going again!

I went here last night and simply had an amazing time. The other customers were all singing and dancing to the songs they were choosing, and the staff all had fantastic attitudes. It was a very welcoming environment, along with an exceptional menu. Shout out to the bartender Ryan, who made me some killer cocktails. I will recommend this place to friends, family, and coworkers. Thank you, guys, for exceeding my expectations.

Definitely glad we got recommend this place! It was exactly what I was looking for, a cozy and classy craft cocktail bar. The bartender we had was amazing, she listened to what we were feeling and made us drinks to fit what we liked, not just suggested something on the menu. I used to LOVE this place. But they did a remodel and took away everything I loved 😭 it’s no longer a refined and cozy vibe with impressive craft cocktails, it’s more of a mix of all things pop and trendy with a generic bar menu. It made me so sad. We did stay and try to give it a chance but it just wasn’t for us.

I'm not sure if they have different decor for different nights, but the vibe here is definitely different than what the photos on Google show. The walls are painted with off-the-wall semi-psychedelic artwork and neon lights. My friends and I still had a great time but the drinks were only ok and the prices felt high for what we ordered. It's a place you go to towards the end of a night out.

They have an incredible selection of creative concoctions and if you don't see anything you like, the bartender can whip something up to your specifications. The atmosphere may be upscale, but the prices are very reasonable. Every drink I had was unique as it was delicious. I came on a slow Wednesday night, but there's lots of space to hang out and relax by yourself or with a group of friends. Shout-out to the bartender, Brent, for going above and beyond. Really enjoyed talking to him and he made sure I got home safe after a fair few drinks. Definitely going to the Paper Doll next time I'm in downtown. Cheers!

This used to be one of my favorite bars before the redesign. It’s no longer an intimate space to get a drink with friends. Even on nights with a DJ, you could still feel like you were in your own space and hear the people at your table. I couldn’t hear my friend sitting next to me at the table because it was so loud with the TVs playing music videos. The server couldn’t hear us either and didn’t come around often. The table next to us had empty drinks for half an hour without going noticed. The menu used to be a nice bound booklet and now it’s a sheet of water stained paper. I know it’s early in this redesign so maybe that will change, but no longer my cup of tea.

The best ambiance in town -- perfect for a girls night, date night, or a casual drink. The bartenders are friendly and knowledgable, the drinks are strong and unique, and the vibe is immaculate. This is definitely an Instagram worthy bar. I also had the pleasure of attending a rose tasting class in their "back room" area. I highly recommend the experience for any large groups, companies, etc.

Paper Doll is one of the best bars in Birmingham. They serve up creative craft cocktails in a gorgeous atmosphere and the staff is always friendly and on point. I like that they remember me when I come in which is (sadly) not every week. It's a wonderful place for happy hour with friends or for a date. They're not really about the food but they do an amazing charcuterie board which I highly recommend.

LET THE EVENING BE GIN! Last night was a rainy day and night, it rained all day long non stop. For what ever reason, I have not enjoyed the weather here in AL. As they like to say, when it rains, it pours. You never know what's going to come next.. We have had tornado watches too many times to count when the weather is crazy like that. Anyway, I did not want to be all alone at home as Courtney was at a work event last night. So, I decided that I would grab a drink before heading home. Unfortunately, my plan A and my plan B both had private events and were closed. I did not know this ahead of time, so I unfortunately was stuck in the rain for a little bit while waiting for a friend. Neither of these plans had posted on social media that they would be closed for private events. So, this made me a little mad. After walking for a little while, we jumped at the opportunity when realizing that Paper Doll was open to public for drinks without a private event. Paper Doll had been on my list for some time now. But the opportunity did not present itself until last night. Walking into Paper Doll I did not know what to expect. The minute you walk inside, you are greeted by an ominous, yet relaxing atmosphere. There is a large bar area with all of the liquors separated with like ones. The menu is located on a QR code, and also on their website. I know some reviews had mentioned having trouble accessing the menu, but it is also on their webpage. So if you cannot get your phone to cooperate, with the QR code, you can easily access the menu on their website. Shockingly, we had made it to the bar just in time for the end of happy hour. The bartender, Brent was so nice and answered "liquor questions" we had. It was amazing to sit back and watch him make the drinks. I do have to say, I find it so entertaining to see mixologist bartenders working inside these smaller cocktail longes. I ordered the basil smash cocktail. It was the perfect combination of earthy and herby. My friend ordered the FDB No. 1 cocktail which was floral and tart. We both liked the sound of these drinks, and ordered them so we could try each others. I think we were expecting the FDB to be sweeter then it was, but both drinks were still delicious in our books. Before leaving Brent made us an exquisite shot. It was exactly what we were looking for to end an evening out. The shot is not on the menu however, it should be. It was Soho lychee vodka and house made strawberry syrup. Milky in texture, but perfectly sweet. Very nice night cap. If you are looking for a good spot to get a curated cocktail in Birmingham, I cannot recommend Paper Doll enough.

This nice, upscale bar has yet to disappoint. I like how at certain times you can just walk in and find your own seating. You can either walk to the bar and place your order or if you're seated they'll come to you and like most bars you can leave you tab open. On my last two visits I've ordered Queen's Navy which is a gin cocktail with lemon juice, orgeat, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Very nice and smooth going down and is on the sweet side. I also had the Elder-Bramble last night and it was good too but not something I'd go back too. Overall service is nice and quick. The atmosphere is relaxing with dimmed lights and upscale decor. I've never gone too late when they're busy so it's usually quiet so that you can converse.

I came here on a weekday with my social group for drinks and to have a Christmas party. The decor was beautiful and felt upscale. They do have a happy hour menu with nice drink options to choose from. The only downside to this bar is the lack of food options. They have small snack items that you can purchase. I ordered the spicy mixed nuts for $5 and it did enough to absorb the alcohol. If you only want to drink this would not be an issue of concern. I ordered the FDB drink off of the happy hour menu and it was delicious. Overall this is a nice place to try something different.

Cool ambience, but there was a $10 cover for a DJ and then we waited 35 minutes standing at the bar before be served. Bartender would not make eye contact and made six or seven drinks in front of us before we asked another worker the best way to order. She said by flagging down a server vs waiting at the bar. DJ did not talk or interact with patrons and just played basic music that could have been any Spotify track. I would rather pay a cover for live music and better service. Cocktails are fine but nothing to write home about. Probably would not return!

Sooooo I love absinthe and Paper Doll has an absinthe drip that I can't get enough of. They have several great drinks in general and a wide variety of alcohol for straight or mixed drinks. Brennan and Water are my favorites as far as service goes. The space has a decent amount of seating, but fills quickly on the weekends. It's a rather quick rush though so you'll be able to enjoy it being less crowded around 10 or 1030.

I was here last night to hang out with friends after work. When I walked in, I wasn't immediately greeted and it was not a lot of people inside so that wasn't good. However, once I went to the bar, the bartender did ask if he could get me something. This bar is decorated nicely and has a cool vibe. I'd probably come back.

There were a lot of people but seemed too much chaos. Took forever to get my drink, my husband got a beer and by the time he got it, it wasn't as cold as it should have been. Lots of businesses, so hopefully you guys can keep getting it.

was really disappointed. thought they were sensory inclusive but most definitely were not. As a former veteran, had been there before and used the sensory accommodations, this past visit, those accommodations were not there. very disappointed.

The menu is online, but I cannot easily read it. The software does not make it easy to expand the menu to see the contents. We are leaving. It is too frustrating.

This is a pretty cool bar. I'm not sure why I don't come here more often. They have a huge selection of cocktails. I didn't drink but tried some of my friend Adam's drink. Winter something. It was delicious! I'm definitely getting it if I come back here. My friends and I shared their cheese board that also included meats, crackers, olives, and okra. It was a really fun time!

Okay so this is my new FAVORITE bar. I don't drink alcohol, but I love getting to go to bars with my friends. Luckily, the bartender had ALCOHOL-FREE spirits. The mocktails were incredible and I could barely taste the difference. The bartender (I forget his name) was VERY accommodating. I always feel awkward ordering mocktails at bars, but he was enthusiastic to suggest new ideas and his favorite of the mocktails and spirit substations. If you're alcohol-free like me, but still enjoy the atmosphere, this is the PERFECT place! My date got the standard cocktails with booze and LOVED it. 10/10 Reccomend!

A true gem in the cocktail scene in downtown Birmingham! I stopped by here last week and had two cocktails. The decor and esthetics are pleasant and has a great vibe. Definitely worth checking out if you are in the area and looking for great cocktails!

Tried this new bar after a yelp event the other day and I was not disappointed! The drink selection was awesome. They had an extensive wine and beer list, plus a plethora of interesting cocktails. I had the Provence, which is New Amsterdam Vodka, St Germain, Domaine de Canton, fresh Lemon Juice, Lavender Bitters, Prosecco, and Rose Hips. The cocktail was refreshing and delicious, and I felt fancy AF with the roses floating around in there! There was a decent jazz singer there and we enjoyed the music. The patrons were quiet and the lighting was dim. The decor is upscale and tasteful. All in all, a classy, relaxing place to have a drink. Go check em out!

The craft cocktail heavens parted and blessed Birmingham with a beautiful Paper Doll! This place is legit, and upon gracing the threshold you completely forget that you're in the state of Alabama. New York, yes. Los Angeles, maybe. But, definitely not Birmingham, Alabama! Paper Doll has an ambiance and vibe that's truly remarkable. Once the hubs and I scrapped our jaws off the floor and got down to the cocktail business, we were impressed yet again. Steven greeted us, told us about the happy hour specials, which we ordered one of each, and then took us on a cocktail crash course for the duration of our visit! We LOVED it! Chilean Pisco versus Peruvian Pisco, pisco sours vs. gin fizzes, is all liquor gluten free?, why do I love cocktails with egg whites?, Grey Goose isn't really French -- these are just a few of the topics covered over our (oh so) crafty cocktails with Steven! We were a captive audience, and Steven took us to school. Loved my first visit to Paper Doll, and we're already planning our next trip!

If you're looking for an upscale bar to go to in Birmingham, this is the place! The ambiance is nice and has a hipster vibe, the sofas are comfortable and the lights are low. This would be a perfect place to take a date, meet up with old friends, or have a girls night. I came on a weekday, so I was able to enjoy the happy hour specials. We decided to sit at the bar. The bartenders were friendly and I would consider them more of mixologists. We had the pleasure of being served by Steven. He was friendly and knowledgeable of all of the drinks. We found out that he has bartender all over the US and overseas. Sitting at the bar is interesting because you can observe them making just about every cocktail you can imagine. They even smoke glasses for certain cocktails. If you're a fan of pretty drinks like I am, they have a plethora of fresh herbs and garnish. I heard this place can become crowded on the weekend. No worries, because they will soon have two full service bars! If I could change one thing, it would be more bar food! They offer chips and nuts (I believe) for purchase. I look forward to coming back.

What a lovely bar! I was a fan of the previous establishment that occupied this space and I must say I am very impressed with how the new owners have re-designed what was already a nice place. The decor is very opulent and classy. Lots of soft seating...plenty of room to sit! The bar is beautiful, and I really like the drink selection. Lots of unique recipes. The bartenders are very well-versed on the menu and can also make a custom cocktail after having a short conversation with you about your preferences. The dim lighting provides an intimate atmosphere, so it's a great date spot. I have also met a large group of friends there as well and we were easily accommodated in a small, private room. Parking is a challenge, but welcome to the new downtown. So on a busy night, be prepared to park a block or two away.

Clearly had DollHouse (back room) reserved for a birthday. Three other people also had reservations for parties of 7+. Upon arrival, we were told it was closed. We had made reservations and they offered no accommodations.

I had never heard of this place before, and that is definitely my mistake. A group of us came here on a weekday night. A few other patrons stopped in, but we had the place mostly to ourselves. The one bartender answered all of our questions and gave recommendations, even if you could only give vague descriptions of what you wanted or were in the mood for drinking. He was very knowledgeable about all kinds of drinks, and even made me a Pisco Sour, something I haven't had since my visit to Peru. I tried a few of our group's drinks, and they were all well made. But if it's packed, it may definitely take some time to get your drinks, as they are made when ordered, and definitely served fresh! I would highly recommend giving this place a try next time you are downtown.

MY FAVORITE BAR. Picture it, you're a writer with a cocktail in your hand, feeling inspired by the jazz music in the background and the espresso chocolate beans on the table next to the candle dimly lit. Ok, I'm dramatic but seriously this place is such a vibe. Great Cosmo and bar snacks

I came here with some friends on a Friday night and we really enjoyed it. I love the chill vibes and sophisticated decor. Whoever designed this spot deserves an award! I had the whiskey smash and it was excellent. My only complaint is that there was way too much ice. I think I took 3 sips and it was gone. For that reason, I'd say the drinks are quite overpriced for what you get...which is to be expected. Overall I'd still come back.

Went here for a date, space is limited, the chairs inside the bar are kind of iffy but the bartender when I went was extremely professionally and helpful in picking out drinks. If you're just getting off work looking to get some drinks - highly recommend

Came in here on a Friday night and immediately fell in love with the atmosphere! The vibe is unmatched and the decor has a nice relaxing feel to it. I suggest stopping by if you just want a quick drink, want a nice place to hang with friends, or date night. I ordered the whiskey smash which was really good, but had way too much ice. Next time I'll be sure to ask for light ice, but other than that, no complaints!

Super dark lit. If you want to read the menu, bring your iPhone light . Husband and I ordered a whiskey and martini; It took us longer to wait for it then it did to drink it. Beautifully made cocktails, But I will stick to my martinis at Surin West. Where we actually taste the alcohol and it's worth my money.

Listen, I really want to give this place more stars, but I just can't. I didn't realize this used to be Tavern on 1st til I ended up on their Yelp page. Both times I went, it was on the weekend. So I walked in and IMMEDIATELY loved the vibes. The furniture, the chandeliers, the space, LOVED IT. It's very classy with ecleptic furniture that gives it fashion vibes. None of the funiture really matches, but it all works together to give it a modern and fashionable look. We made our way to a table and my friend and I sat on the couch. So comfy! I love that it spans the entire wall. The marble was gorgeous and the lighting was great. The cocktail menu is expansive and I asked for a particular flavor that they made happen in my cosmo. TIP: Each bartender has a specialty drink! they have table service which is great. The space looks small, but it's really deep and has a lot of seating. Of course, it can get packed being downtown and all. My drink was great, but was very pricey. For the second time, my bf got a drink. An old fashioned, but he hated it. The liquor in it was interesting and he'll have to tell the waiter what he wants next time. I love the curtains making different rooms in the building and I love the space overall. Somewhere I would go on a fancy night out, or if friends are in town!

Really love this sleek upscale vibe cocktail bar! It definitely has the dark mysterious ambiance going on with some very delicious drink options. The bar has a few different seating areas to choose from- variety is always nice! The front of the bar has a long couch that stretches the entire wall with tables set up around them so it gives off that super comfy yet classy hotel lounge vibe. Will definitely be back to try the absinthe drinks and the food. This place is super cool for any occasion whether it's a date, a night out with friends, or somewhere to sit in at the bar and grab a snack and a drink after work! Check it out bham :)

I love a nice bar. If you add some halfway decent food of some sort, even better. To my surprise, my 28 year old daughter forced me to go to Paper Doll for a drink. She even claimed it was her treat. I had to go based on that offer. This very fine establishment does true mixology (craft) cocktails. Five different drinks ordered by five different people. Every drink was really good. That was NOT enough to get a 5 out of 5. There was more. We ordered a cheese plate and a chocolate plate. Both very reasonably priced and excellent quality. Then the atmosphere was unique, comfortable and attractive. Finally, the staff is exciting and happy to serve you. This place will become very popular. It is also right down the block from the new Cigar Lounge (Club). All in all, a great place to add to other great places in Birmingham, Alabama.

Just to let you know the cocktail bar that once was Tavern on First is now Paper Dolls, and I used to frequent Tavern on First quite frequently. I loved its laid back atmosphere and cozy booths. In fact it was one of my favorite places. Ok now about Paper Dolls. I had heard so many cool things about this place, but didn't realize that it was the former Tavern on First location until I got there. Honestly I liked Tavern on First so much better. This could be because of my shock and disappointment that they had closed. However I think it is because Paper Dolls was super loud and crowded when we went. The music was good but turned up way to loud and the cocktails were just ok. Also the decor was a lot darker and seemed less friendly and cozy. Because of the amount of people, it seemed claustrophobic. Interesting, because Tavern on First never seemed like a small place to me. The one positive was that we were able to sit on the super, comfy sofa in the front. With all this said, I do want to give it a second chance. I guess I'll need to wait until the newness wears off and the crowds die down.

What was T01...a great craft cocktail bar but not great atmosphere has now transformed into the sexiest coolest bar in town and STILL with the best cocktails at really reasonable prices. And now they have added a snack menu which is perfect to keeping u hanging out to drink a couple more great drinks. And did I mention how sexy it is. When we first walked into the completely redone and transformed bar it was the only word that came to mind. Incredible lighting, beautiful ceiling fixtures with a beautiful marble bar and incredible seating with couches and tables and chairs. They are also doing valet on the weekend and throwing in some cool DJs playing club music to truly make this a go to bar/club on the weekends.

Atmosphere. This place has it. I first learned about Tavern on First during the Get Down Downtown New Years Event. Thought it had a great relaxed atmosphere that you would want from your local watering hole. If I want to spend a nice evening with the girl I love where it's not too crowded or loud I come here. They serve a wide variety of cocktails with whiskey cocktail specials every night from 4 to 9pm. They also serve a selection of local beer. Check it out and see if this doesn't fit the bill.

This is a fantastic cocktail bar that is located on 1st Ave., North in downtown Birmingham. We visited one evening when some of the other popular cocktail bars in that area were overcrowded and we had A delightful experience. In fact, we have returned twice since then. On our first trip, we sat at the bar and more served by one of the owners of the establishment. On his recommendation I tried the basil smash, a cocktail similar to a gimlet, with gin, cucumber, lime, and basil. It was delicious and refreshing. My husband went with an old-fashioned, but he had it smoked, which is a technique this bar uses to smoke the inside of the glass with a burning with chip prior to pouring the drink. Parking is a little bit difficult at this location, but it is totally worth a visit! The service is great and the drinks are fantastic!

I enjoyed patronizing this place on a cool and quiet October Wednesday night. I tried 2 of their Old Fashioned. Both were very good. I also had the charcuterie tray which was ample and tasty. Cozy and pleasant.

I stumbled upon this pace during COVID while driving back home to Knoxville from Miami. What a neat place! Let me set the scene for you though (I've been here three times now, the most recent being last weekend for my partners 30t bday celebration) This place is swanky. That means if you need to "flex" about your job position to the wait staff or you have some ridiculous idea that you should be able to frivolously return a drink you don't enjoy, you should not come. It isn't Wet Willies. That being said the drinks are a little pricey but the very 'Gatsby' type vibes and lounge space available make that make sense. This is a quiet bar that you go to for a girls night, romantic date night, maybe even a fancy little work meet up.... Not the girls bachelor party lol and I like that. The most recent visit I ordered the Absinthe Drip (always one of my favorite) and it was as usual very tasty. I was bummed the sugar wasn't burned though, it does add a depth of flavor that was missing just a bit. We also ordered the Charcutrie board and while it was pretty good it was in fact very very basic. For such a nice place I would have expected something more in depth or creative even if it was a little less food. *The first time I was here they were doing a magazine shoot inside, I would love to know which magazine featured this place so I could try to snag a copy!!

I visited Paper Doll on a Friday around 10pm and it was PACKED. My group was lucky to find a couch right inside the door and we parked it immediately. Around the bar was so crowded and it took a while to order a drink as it seemed you could only order at the bar. The drink menu was not very extensive but what we ordered was very good. I'm used to hearing breaking glass in a bar, but there was a glass dropped every few minutes. One waiter dropped a glass on my foot when cleaning up our table, shattering all around our table but I'm going to chalk that up to the sheer number of people packed into the place. The guy at the front checking IDs was exceedingly nice and really made you feel welcome before coming in. There's so doubt the place is beautifully decorated with chandeliers and lots of black and moody walls and decor. I would definitely go here again, but I would suggest coming earlier in the evening before the crowds set in.

Great drinks and great atmosphere! Had a great time chatting with Jacob at the bar. Would recommend going here for a great craft cocktail experience. If we are ever back in the area we will be back.

Paper Doll is a superb niche cocktail bar that has recently opened up in Bham and is a much needed and welcomed addition to the night life scene in this city. The decor and ambiance changes from the old Tavern bar that it has replaced make the space almost unrecognizable - low and intimate table seating with soft lighting and very swanky interior decorations. The craft cocktails that they serve as incredibly fresh and delicious and come in a great variety, as does their wines. Service behind the bar is prompt, friendly and the utmost professional. My only recommendation is to come early, especially if you're coming as a group. There's still going to be a wait on some weekend nights and interior is a little crowded. I suspect it'll stay that way for a while for everyone wanting to check it out. Also - a back room private event area is available to those interested in hosting an event.

It is absolutely amazing what they have done with the space. The previous bar that was here was Tavern On 1st. Which was a place I enjoyed the few times I came before. But basically take what was already a great bar, they took and turned it up quite a few notches. The first thing you notice is what they have done aesthetically. It is very well decorated with plenty of great seating. It creates a great ambiance for relaxing for after work drinks. It is still low key enough that you are able to enjoy conversation with people. The bartenders are very knowledgable and make great drinks. They are attentive and really make sure you are well taken care of. There is a private event space in the back if you are interested in hosting a bigger group. Great bar and I will be back.

Super impressed by Birmingham's latest boutique mixologist bar, Paper Doll! It's located in the old Tavern on 1st building downtown and you can park on the street or take an Uber. The outside is painted black with small lettering and can easily be missed - so keep your eyes peeled. From the moment you walk into Paper Doll, you can tell that this is a place where you'll have a good time. The seating, lighting, vibe and décor are all posh and appeasing to the eye. There's little nooks and cranny's for seating in every corner. I highly recommend getting to Paper Doll early to take advantage of more seating and happy hour. I've heard the place have a line out the door before. Getting there early is key. Happy Hour boasts $5.00 cocktails and lasts from (I think) 5 - 7 PM. They have an extensive drink and wine menu and smaller list of tapas styled food on the back pages. I ordered Pinot Noir and the cheese plate while my friends ordered specialty cocktails. They seemed to enjoy every last drop. I can't wait to return - this time I'll take out of town guests!

One of my favorite bars in Bham. The layout is smart; there are places at the bar, plenty of lounge seats, and areas for both small and large groups. The staff are equipped with iPads and come to you so there is no need to hustle to the bar to place your order and leave your group. The whole group can stay seated, chat, and place their drink orders quickly and easily. The drinks are fun and styled well.

This place is great. They have small plates as well as drinks. I had an amazing cheese plate with a rat race drink with cachaça and rosemary. The atmosphere is very chill and nice. Definitely a good date place or somewhere to hang with friends.

We enjoyed happy hour seating. I can't remember the name of it, but one of the happy hour cocktails was the best mixed drink I've had in my life. I also enjoyed the house Pinot noir a lot! The food was also reasonably priced. We had the cheese flight and it was fantastic! Delicious! And there was plenty of food to split. The only reason I didn't give five stars was because there was only one waitress to about 40 customers. But she still did a great job.

Paper doll was a great new bar that I just recently got to try in my last trip to BHM! This bar is more of a "high class" feel with chandeliers and fancy mirrors. But the main thing that I liked about this place was the large couch bench seat, it was like sitting on a cloud and it was amazing! This is the type of bar that I can sit and get to know someone at. It wasn't super crowded when we went on a Friday night but it was also right after the holidays. The drinks were good but more upscale feeling and Paper doll had a more defined drink list so this is probably for the more experienced drinker. The drinks themselves were very aesthetically pleasing with perfectly square ice cubes or little garlands. Overall really great place and would come back again!

Super cool addition to the Northside bar scene. The atmosphere is very artsy and dark. It's much bigger on the inside than you think. They also provide table service if you sit down which is very nice. The cocktail menu is extremely expansive. I had the Gin Lizzy which was very tasty and sweet. I also had the Necromancer which was an absinthe based drink. It was made well but I would not recommend unless you know you love absinthe (which tastes like black licorice). Over all a super cool new place to add to your Northside bar crawl.
