I used to LOVE Taqueria La Bamba back in the day, and it was one of the OG taquerias located in Mountain View. I was super excited to see that the son of the Taqueria La Bamba owners recently opened a food truck, and wanted to give it a try right away. Their menu is concise, and they have the basics: tacos, super tacos, burritos, quesadillas, and nachos. They also have pupusas available, which I thought was cool to see. Their proteins include Carne Asasda, Pollo Asado, Carnitas, Al Pastor, Birria, Grilled Fish, and Grilled Shrimp, and vegetarian options are also available.
Unfortunately, my order wasn't reminiscent of the food I remember from Taqueria La Bamba. Since they're a new food truck, they could still be working out the kinks, and I would come back at a later point to give them another try. It was only about 10 minutes for an order placed around 3:30pm on a Friday, and they are parked in the lot in front of O'Malleys Sports Pub. I tried:
-Carne Asada Super Burrito (Rice, Salsa Fresca, Guacamole, Sour Cream, Cheese, $11.93, https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=ODSpYcveJCiiYYG3ZOy_2w&userid=76vIFZcC7owykCBjMfGVXg): This was a hefty super burrito, but their carna asada didn't have much flavor. It didn't have that sear/char from the grill, but they didn't skimp on the meat. The rice was also on the bland side, and I couldn't taste the salsa fresca.
-Quesabirria Taco (Fried Tortilla Topped w/Melted Cheese, Onions, Cilantro, Salsa Verde, Birria, Consume Dipping Sauce, $4.36, https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=sWtnLb7kqlVlIUfGQsqVfw&userid=76vIFZcC7owykCBjMfGVXg): Yum- this was my favorite dish and their birria was done well. The meat was tender and flavorful, and the taco was super cheesy. I also liked the subtle spice of the consume. I just wished the fried tortilla was a little crispier, since it didn't have that sear/crust that I've really liked on other quesabirria tacos. However, still recommended!
-Taco w/Al Pastor ($3.44, https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=4KXlgpPvGqoCoTgaJbHGlQ&userid=76vIFZcC7owykCBjMfGVXg): Not my favorite. The taco shell was falling apart/mealy by the time I ate it, and the al pastor was dry and lacking flavor. I liked the spicy salsa, and this taco was a sizable portion, but I wouldn't order their al pastor again.
I forgot to ask if they had an orange salsa available, and only received one type of salsa with my order. It was slightly spicy, but very thin in consistency and there wasn't much flavor aside from the spice. I would return for their quesabirria tacos, and to try their carnitas and grilled shrimp in a taco or burrito. I hope they continue improving on their dishes, and get back to the level of Taqueria La Bamba!
