Papercrane Asian Bistro - Review - Key Biscayne - Miami - The Infatuation

"Papercrane is your best option for affordable sushi in Key Biscayne. There are about as many origami cranes inside as there are dishes on the menu—which is to say: a lot. They do everything from chicken satay (order it) and steamed dumplings (skip it), to Thai noodles and sushi. Focus your attention on the noodles and rolls. We like the spicy pad kee mao and classic pad thai. As for sushi, get any roll with tuna in it, like the heat roll, and you won’t be mad." - Mariana Trabanino

Google
Kind waitress, fast service, great music. Unfortunately, the food is VERY mediocre. I recommend sticking to a bottled or canned beverage if you order here and avoid the tap entirely because it’s straight toilet water. Then, I tried their Thai tea and substituted for coconut milk which tasted strange and expired. The shrimp spring rolls were bland and overpowered by all the veggies. The Papercrane roll also had no flavor, just a mouthful of unsalted rice but at least it wasn’t fishy, not entirely horrible when doused with soy sauce and spicy mayo! The miso soup actually wasn’t bad at all, it was quite nice and flavorful. The Thai noodles (Pad see ew) were surprisingly good, with a pleasant, chewy texture, yummy sauce, juicy chicken, and crunchy veggies. Finally, the Thai donuts were not too sweet and had a lovely condensed milk dip. Overall, would not come again.

Google
This is my favorite Asian restaurant in the whole wide world. I have been going here since it was called origins and the service and quality is just as good as it has ever been. It is local owned by a very sweet lady and she is there every time I’ve been there. She is kind, patient and provides excellent service every single time. The coconut shrimp was amazing, especially because of the curry sauce. I also had the dumplings which were just as good. I really can’t say enough good things about this place!

Google
The Dragon Roll is my favorite—always fresh and delicious! Great service and very kind staff. Paper Crane is definitely a top spot for me and my daughter.

Google
We came after the beach and it was phenomenal. Everything we had was delicious. (Red dragon roll papercrane roll and pad Thai). All staff were friendly and and welcoming. They even have daily happy hour including Sunday which looked like good deals. We sat outside and it was so nice.I’m putting 5 star on everything but for some reason google is posting with 4.

Yelp
Soooo fricken delicious! I'll never share my fave item though! Don't want it running out anymore than it already does! You'll have to invite me to see. Haha. It's worth it. I crack jokes and always get the good table‍ Service is fantastic. Staff is amazing! Best restaurant on Key Biscayne for allergies! Haven't had a meal I would not repeat here. Love the soups. The pad Thai is great! And my absolute favorite dish is the world famous .... tap for more

Yelp
Friendly staff and beautiful outdoor seating. Food is high quality. Started with chicken Tom Kah and it came with other veggies that complement the soup. It was a great starter. I had the Red Dragon Roll. They were out of fresh tuna but substituted with fresh salmon and it was superb! If I was here more than a couple of days I would come back.

Yelp
We came on a hot Monday afternoon as a party of 2 looking to get a quick bite in the area. Really didn't expect to find this little gem! We ordered the shrimp scampi and pad Thai, both which came out pretty quick upon ordering. The scampi was amazing, the stir fried shrimp was placed neatly on top of the fried rice (fried with coconut milk apparently) and all glazed with their special sauce - the flavor was phenomenal. They really nailed down the Thai essence in this dish and maybe it was the heat but I almost thought I was on the other side of the world for a hot second while eating this dish. I just wished there was more on the plate! The pad Thai we thought would be some good comfort food, but boy was it more than that. At first sight it looks like normal pad thai but then on first bite you realize they ever so slightly undercooked the noodles so they were as if just under-al dente. Whether intentional or not this small detail blew my mind and really changed my perspective on pad thai. The sauce again was to die for - it wasn't heavy or oily but really nailed the flavor and had incredible balance. tldr; Asian eatery out in Key Biscayne that is a neat little gem

Yelp
Very pretty venue, we choose to sit outside and enjoy the weather. Friendly staff and they were helpful with gluten free options. Food was good, not amazing but good. Fresh fish, it was being delivered while we were there. We had a late lunch, so we did not explore too much of the menu. Lots of Thai noodles and dishes, we were there for the sushi. Loved that you could substitute real crab for imitation.

Yelp
Love this place. The spring rolls, sushi, and Thai food is fresh and delicious. The ambiance is so pretty outside too. The service was superb and I want to thank Agustin for all the great service and attention. This restaurant is one of my favorites

Yelp
I had lunch with my friend at Origin Asian Bistro/Key Biscayne. A new look. We ordered fresh sashimi mori, dragon roll and green curry chicken. Everything was delicious. Especially the salad dressing. Not only that, the service is also very friendly. I'll come back again.

Yelp
Try to recall the taste of a frozen dinner and powdered ice-tea. Waitress was apologetic and discounted our meal. Nice outside dining area.

Yelp
Didn't taste very fresh. Couldn't tell a difference between this sushi and the ones I get from the market at home in Indy.

Yelp
I was very pleased with this sushi spot on Key Biscayne. I loved that they have one riceless roll that was so delicious. It's in the appetizer section. It's called Kanisu. Then I had the tuna ceviche and they provided slice cucumber instead of chips. Both were very fresh and really good. Here's the slight negative. When we were seated we were told that the kitchen was closing in five minutes. We ordered very quickly. However the food was brought out unevenly so two of us were almost finished before the sushi rolls were brought out. Also no water refill. Not a true sense of we are happy you are here take your time and enjoy yourself. Won't keep me from coming back.

Yelp
This upscale looking bistro in the heart of Key Biscayne looks much more expensive than what it is. We were so pleasantly surprised the first time we checked it out and have been coming back since. Their lunch menu is a VERY filling amount of food for about $10. Parking is available and easy in a shopping plaza next to the place. On a Saturday around noon there were no crowds and good service. I've had the Pad Thai, Thai Fajitas, and Spicy Thai Wraps here. All have been delicious and very filling. The portions are good - if you are not too hungry you can share them. Service was prompt and good, refilling our water and helping us with any extra requests we had - soy sauce, peanut sauce, etc. The outside Seating is really very pleasant, a mix of shade and sunshine in the heart of Key Biscayne.

Yelp
Good place to enjoy with friends. Food also has great quality and is delicious. We order Green Curry, Yellow Curry, Rolls, and rice, all are awesome!!! Will come back soon!!!

Yelp
This is a hidden gem in a very expensive area of Miami. I've visited several times for lunch. The lunch menu has a variety of options and the prices are amazing. Most lunch combo are between 9-13$ and they are very filling. These prices are hard to come by in the heart of key Biscayne. The food is delicious and will definitely return to try new items. The lunch special comes with salad, two dumplings and a main dish. Side dishes, if ordered, come in big shareable portions. The salad and rice were good but the star of the show today was the chicken Pad Thai, which I found flavorful and delicious.

Yelp
Came in on the holiday weekend. Staff are all working really hard and they were packed also lots of pick up orders. We had great service and even better food. We ordered lettuce wraps, JB roll, salmon roll, chicken pad thai, marcos roll and kanisu roll. Fish to rice ratio was perfect!

X.Y. ..

Yelp
Very nice Thai food selections and their Pad Kee Mao tastes better than the dishes from most CA Bay Area restaurants. Good fast service. Price is quite reasonable too. (We did not try their sushi .)
google avatar

Julio S.

Yelp
They have a large parking lot in the back. A definite plus in Miami! The Dishes were 4 stars, the pork ribs too sweet. The misso soup standard level and the pork dumplings 3 1/2 stars

Rachel H.

Yelp
Just ate here, had sushi, pad Thai, red curry, steamed wontons, summer rolls, all excellent. Miso soup was great. Service was excellent. I would come back here any time!!!

Yelp
Yummiest food and amazing service! My favorite place to go with my friends, I can't wait to bring my family!

Yelp
Sushi and noodles = 5 Stars. Service = 3. Here's why... Tucked away in a small shopping mall is this sweet little sushi spot. We got sat right away but the waitress was a little awkward. She had this off putting - deadpan expression that didn't sit well. She spoke good english so I don't think it was a language barrier thing but felt more like an "I-dont-wanna-be-here," emotion. Anyways, we shrugged it off and read over the menu, and ordered some sake. The sake was brought over and no lie, as soon as I poured it and sat it down, I accidentally bumped my glass over and spilled my sake on the table... UGH! We asked the waitress if we could get some napkins but she just kind of stood there and stared... "... sooo can we get some napkins or move tables??..." She let us move tables but then we just felt more awkward. Okay okay enough of the awkward. The menu has a mind numbing amount of food items; There's noodles, sushi, pho, rice, curry, tacos, tempura... ALOT of different items. We started by ordering an appetizer of fried calamari, which was perfectly crispy but not too greasy. For dinner, I can't turn down a good plate of Singapore noodles and of course we also ordered sushi. The singapore noodles were SOOO dang good. I'm talking, a perfect balance between the amount of noodles, meat and veggies. Sushi-wise, I ordered Tuna and Yellowtail nigiri which was skillfully cut to the right size, it was tender and the flavor was clean and sweet. Then we had the Dragon roll, Spicy Crunch roll, and awesome Origin Roll. Presentation of all these items looked so cool and appetizing! Definitely a 5 star flavor and presentation experience. All in all, I'm a fan of this place but I'll keep in mind NOT to expect the best service.

Yelp
Everything was great. Nice restaurant at an outside plaza. The sushi and lo mein were great. We didn't particularly like the Key Biscayne roll. The peppers and cilantro in a sushi roll did not mix well. Staff was friendly.

Luz M.

Yelp
Wonderful costumer service and food is great highly recommend, outside area is shaded and nice.

Yelp
Absolutely fantastic, we come here every week and we're treated like family. We're always in a rush and they take very good care of us and are efficient.

Yelp
Good option for sushi on the island. They have a cute outdoor sitting area by a fountain which is nice. The food is better when you dine in rather than order out. They have great coconut Thai soup! Plenty of options on the menu and lots that are great for sharing.
google avatar

Yelp
No service recently when we had reservations for 7. After seating no one ever came to take an order. I was treated rudely by staff when I approached them about the lack of service. No manager was on premises. We had to walk out and went to a nearby Asian restaurant with far better service: Sushi Siam.

Ana Karen A.

Yelp
favorite sushi place in key biscayne!! super fair prices especially for key biscayne, nice outdoor area, super kind and attentive staff, and my favorite dragon roll

K V.

Yelp
Wow. Give me a moment to take in this amazing place. What a little hidden gem. The outside is such a vibe with the pergola and fountain. The inside is quaint, very clean and fresh roses on every table. Linen tablecloths make it extra romantic. THE CURRY IS OUT OF THIS WORLD! So authentic and comforting. Even more comforting is the staff! Breeze was my waitress and she made everything so pleasant! Her recommendations were genuine and very helpful. The service is quick and everyone smiles at you here. I see many others that are repeat customers and locals - I totally understand why! They better get used to me because I will definitely be coming back weekly.

Yelp
Average Asian food. Good outdoor space. Need to improve the food quality! Extremely slow service. Thanks .

Olivia W.

Yelp
The outside seating was so cute! Sushi was so good, we got four different rolls and enjoyed all of them. Our server was so nice and came to check on us frequently. Would definitely go back!

Yelp
We had a great experience here. - Service: Our server was polite, attentive, and there was not a long wait for food. - Ambiance: I loved the ambiance outside, especially with the great weather and since we got seats right by the fountain. - Food: I enjoyed everything we ordered, plus the complimentary edamame (don't eat the pod!) we received when we arrived. My favorite was the seafood on top of the volcano eel roll. We also enjoyed the crunchy spicy roll, which was crunchy but not spicy. And then the most fun dish of the night: the Cancun roll, which is wrapped in tortilla.
google avatar

Derek G.

Yelp
I tried this place because of the diversity in menu. We stuck to the Sushi, which was mediocre in quality and presentation. The service was OK, slow. If your not that into food this place will be an ok experience. If you love sushi find a place that focused a bit more on quality.
google avatar

Patrick G.

Yelp
My first experience with Sush was a disaster. My buddy took me to a spot up here in Dayton, Ohio and I did NOT set well with me. That was back in 2004. I said I'd never eat this crap again. Everyone kept saying "give it another chance".. "your buddy took you to a crappy spot".. "are you sure you were eating it the way it's supposed to be eaten".. and blah blah blah.. My girl is a MERP student at Ross, and on a tight budget but she sprung me to experience Origin, knowing how apprehensive I was about it. Thank you baby! She was very patient and helpful explaining what was what (I don't eat swine or shellfish) and how to eat it. The stuff I do actually eat - yeah buddy, I SMASHED IT. Tuna Sashimi, Salmon Carpaccio, Ginger Chicken, Tuna Roll, and the Tai-Snapper. Go to Origins when you're in South Miami. You'll love it!

Francisco T.

Yelp
Second and last time I make an order through their website and they just don't deliver even though that have charged your credit card. Never take a call and never responded. The place is nearby home, had to go there directly for a Refund which they hardly conceded. They are dishonorable people.

Yelp
Best sushi/Japanese restaurant on the Key. Very nice owner who always helps with specials and is very friendly. It is always delicious and they just redid the interior and it looks even better than before. I suggest the mini sushi mori, miso soup, and white rice. -JG
google avatar

Erica B.

Yelp
Had lunch and dinner here in the same week - outstanding food both times; Sushi, curry and drinks.
google avatar

Alan N.

Yelp
The location is nice with outdoor seating options in a chic part of Key Biscayne. We tried the Thai summer rolls and realized this is not a Thai specialty place, so I ordered Japanese for my meal. Now I know this is not a Japanese specialty place either. I don't want to be mean, so I'll just say that if you want rocking Thai or Sushi, head into Miami. Back to Latino food for me while in KB!

Leslie G.

Yelp
The absolute best sushi place for the price range, my Roommate and I came here 6 days out of the week when we first tried it
google avatar

Liliana E.

Yelp
Ordered take out. It was ready in a few minutes. The beef Pho was very tasty as were my steamed pork dumplings.

Ale M.

Yelp
Worst sushi place in the whole Key. There is 3 other sushi places with better food and better service. The waitress constantly treated us bad and gave us horrible attitude. If you're in the key, go to Sake Room or Kazumi's. It's a no brainer.

Sarai G.

Yelp
This place was just great! Great atmosphere ! Delicious food ! Not only does it have a great presentation but it is delicious!
google avatar

Juan G.

Yelp
This is without a doubt my favorite Asian place on the Key. While I love Sushi Siam, Origin's sushi selection is the most delicious. Plus, the restaurant's open atmosphere is really pleasant

Yelp
Dear Origin Asian Bistro, All I can say is that I am HORRIFIED at my most recent experience here. I don't know what's going on with your ownership and management, but being rude to your customers is NOT acceptable. Not honoring items on your menu and arguing a moot point is NOT acceptable. Screaming at and challenging your customers is NOT acceptable. Let me start at the beginning, since that's usually the best way to tell a story. I came for lunch with a coworker a couple of Fridays ago. We were looking forward to enjoying a beautiful Friday afternoon having lunch away from the office. The restaurant was pretty empty upon our arrival (only 2 other tables total inside AND out), so we expected it to be quick, which was unfortunately not the case. We sat inside and noticed that the owner/manager was at a table working on his laptop at a table in the corner from where we were. It was just an observation, but for some reason, I just had the feeling he was the owner. Anyhow, we placed our order, opting to share a sashimi lunch special, which the menu said it was 5 pieces of fish, chosen by the chef, and a soup or salad, and a California Roll. Since we both wanted salad, we were charged for 1, but that was understandable. A while had passed (i mean a good while, like 25 minutes), which for a sashimi lunch there's not much cooking to do, and our lunch had still not arrived. I asked our waitress who shrugged and went over to the kitchen. She walked back with our lunch, except it was not what we were expecting. It was 9 pieces of sashimi and no California Roll. We were just a little confused, considering the menu said something different, so we asked the waitress what had happened. She explained that their menu was wrong and that this was the sashimi lunch. We then kindly advised her that at no point did she inform us of this mistake in the menu or of the subsequent change in what we would be receiving. We asked to speak to the manager/person-in-charge, who then walked over from the table he was sitting in. In another language, the waitress said something to him (I imagine explaining what happened); he then proceeded to yell at us and tell us that the menu was wrong and that this was our lunch and that was it. We tried to tell him that as his customers he should try and honor his menu, since that was what we were expecting (what's a California roll to him anyhow??), to which he replied that he didn't have to do anything. I was so shocked at the sheer unprofessional-ism displayed by this man that I just didn't know what to say. I shut my mouth at that point, and he left our table with a nasty attitude. My friend and I tried to make the best of it and not have our lunch ruined, so we ate our sashimi. Don't get me wrong, the fish was fresh and delicious, however, 9 pieces of fish aren't going to fill 2 people. We were still hungry, so we ordered a shrimp tempura roll, that was just OK. I won't be back. That's not a threat. I just will never waste another hard-earned dime at such an undeserving establishment. Get it together Origins. Truthfully, SabrinaAnna*

Yelp
Origin Asian Bistro has been submitted to the Yelp Obituaries. Origin Asian Bistro, located on Key Biscayne, has been found dead this past weekend. The cause of death was from too many infusions of worldly cuisines. It was reported that the sheer weight of all these cuisines crushed them as if they belonged in a 2-D Nintendo game. Also, during the autopsy, the coroner reported there was traces of inadequate service laced all over the corpse. The age of Origins was estimated at three years old. This Origin Bistro was the not as smart, not as good-looking, not as big, younger brother of the original Origin, located in South Miami. It was rumored the parents were too old and this is why their latest offspring has so many complications. Although the outside courtyard was a gorgeous spot to dine, the overall dining area is curtailed by the soulless insides of Origin. If it were to rain, people would be stuck with a small, boring, and unimaginative inside. This is exactly where my party was stuck, the boring inside. Compounded to the lack of ambiance was the inadequate service. A fellow Yelper colleague had called it when he said that the waitress was going to mess up the order. Sure enough, the order was screwed up not once, but twice. Lastly, our impersonal waiter gave us the bill with 18% gratuity already on it. What restaurant puts 18% gratuity on a party of three. Lastly, their main problem was their so called Asian Fusion identity. Couldn't Origin pick like three or four cuisines to form their fusion? Instead they chose every Asian country and their mamas plus for kicks had some tacos and non-Asian pasta dishes. Last I checked Mexicacn and Italian was not Asian fusion. They should have advertised Origin as your one stop place for every worldly cuisine. At the funeral, it was reported that the primarily Asian crowd remained apathetic and shrugged their shoulders as dirt was laid upon Origin. The same people were overheard saying the funeral took too long and had cut into their Mah-Jong time. Origin Asian Bistro is survived by its older brother Origin in South Miami.

Yelp
Origin has a very attractive and pleasant atmosphere. The staff is very nice and helpful. My family came here for lunch before hitting the beach. Our lunch consisted of 2 appetizers: steamed dumplings (Sysco special) shrimp tempura- the batter was thick and not light crispy 1 kids meal- chicken katsu and a scoop of rice 1 chicken noodle soup- ultra bland and needed a lot of doctoring 2 lunch combos- ginger steak- excellent flavor and perfectly pink in the middle black cod- tender, moist and delicious! Both combos came with california rolls, more Sysco dumpling but fried, Sysco siu mai, nappa cabbage stir fry and fried rice. 2 lemonades, a beer and a wine. This was a very mediocre meal and should have been more like $50. Lunch set us back $90 and tip. Should have gotten a happy ending for that price.

Yelp
Origin Asian Bistro & Sushi has mediocre quality sushi. I ordered the Rainbow Roll and the Heat Roll, and in both rolls the fish was not that fresh and the rolls were one-note in taste. I enjoyed the Heat Roll more than the Rainbow Roll because it had tuna, which is a naturally flavorful fish. The Rainbow Roll was really lacking in flavor, which is a shame for a roll that has several types of fish. Origin Asian Bistro & Sushi is affordable for anyone on a budget, but I'd recommend trying out the other items on their menu besides the sushi.

Yelp
This place used to be good. USED TO ! The service is getting worse and worse every time. The food is not consistent. Pray before u go to get good food. Sometimes I get a perfect cooked salmon. Sometime it is over cook /dry. Tom yum soup sometimes is good, sometimes is too salty and smell weird. So pick your lucky day to go here. One of the wait staff is rude and unprofessional. Avoid the big tall guy !! Bad service !! The only 2 stars I gave them is for their sushi !! Always good and fresh. Sushi chef always nice and friendly. I used to see a guy ( assuming he was the manager ). Now he is gone. Maybe the good service is gone too ?

Yelp
This is absolutely my favorite Asian restaurant. The Good: I have had just about every Tapas (appetizer) here and they are most def. the star of the show. I've been to this restaurant over 20 times since I've moved to Miami. I consistently love their lamb ribs (even though I'm more of a pescatarian and not a fan of BBQ) they are a great combination of sticky, sweet, tender goodness. The Malaysian Roti is great (My dad is Trini, so I KNOW good roti) This is not what you would traditionally get at a Caribbean, or Indian restaurant, but it falls into the flaky goodness category. The Ceviche (Tuna) is a spicy, sweet, salty , soft, crisp combo of deliciousness. I've had ceviche at other Asian restaurants, but Origin's is the best. Sushi is good Entrees are good (except anything with chicken - see below) The Bad: I will not order any dish with chicken. I've had the curries and they are amazing but I just stick to the shrimp from now on because the chicken is horrible. It's just a tasteless, kinda rubbery, generic, pre-sliced, pre-cooked, garbage similar to what you get at a fast food Chinese place. (Everything else on the menu's absolutely delicious, that's why I gave them 5 stars) The Service: Great, warm, friendly!

Yelp
Let me tell you, my friend in Miami is Yelp-illiterate so when she told me we were just going to go to Key Biscayne and see what we found, I was a little up in the air on that one. I'm all for spontaneity, but not when it comes to spending more than $20, you know? Origin Asian Bistro was just what the doctor ordered. Mai Tais kept flowing (sweet, but just fine for my mood). We had two appetizers, the Prince Edward Island Oysters in a delicious curry-like broth and the lobster-shrimp shumai. The oysters were really very good (and such a gorgeous orange) and a decent portion for the price. This was my 4-year old son's first time eating oysters and he like them quite a bit. The shumai weren't bad, but not all that either. What I like about traditional shumai is that the whole shrimp contrasts in both flavor and texture with the ground pork. These shumai were all lobster/shrimp paste (steamed solid, of course) and could have benefited from some added depth. For an entree, my friend had the shurashi (sashimi on a bed of rice) and really enjoyed it (along with the Miso soup that came with it). My son had the coconut shrimp appetizer as an entree and devoured them all. I tried them and to my palate, they were a little bland, tasting more of breading and less of coconut (perhaps sugar or salt to bring out the coconut flavor?). Still, satisfying my son at such a restaurant is no small feat. They should include that dish on the kids menu! I had the Malaysian shrimp scampi and it KICKED BUTT! So flavorful and delicious. We had lychee fruit for dessert which was super yummy too. We sat on the patio in the beautiful Miami evening and the atmosphere was really peaceful, the wait staff attentive and the decor really lovely. Aside from a few missteps with a couple of dishes, the meal was extremely satisfying and innovative and it's presentation was really beautiful too.

I have been here every year for the last 7 years when I go to the Miami Open. The food is always very good (good curry and sushi) and the service is good as well. The out door seating is great to people watch. Really enjoy it
