Yelp
PARADISE DELI IS THE WORST STORE IN DOWNTOWN JERSEY CITY
I've never complained about a company or store online in the past, but that changes today due to a scam being generated by Paradise Deli, on Newark Ave. (near Coles St.) right here in Downtown Jersey City. This is a long post but I just wanted to educate those who do not know what is going on at this store. Long story short, never spend a cent at Paradise Deli and it's too bad I have to give them a star before posting because they do not deserve even one star.
In October I purchased a Pick 3 lottery ticket from Paradise Deli. It turns out the ticket was a winner, worth $275. I went to the store to cash out the ticket. They scanned it and told me they did not have enough money to pay the $275. I thought this was odd at the time. Later, I found out by scanning this winning ticket, they had essentially cashed it.
I went back to talk to the manager/owner, David, who essentially lied through his teeth while smiling and acting friendly. He said I must be mistaken and I must have gone to another store and changed his story several times.
("One may smile, and smile, and be a villain. "-- William Shakespeare)
When I left the store it was fairly obvious that I had been a victim of a scam. I decided to look at reviews for Paradise Deli. There were three reviews on Yelp, one of which talked about being ripped off from a winning lottery ticket at this establishment.
What followed was a very long process of many phone calls and certified letter$$ to obtain my winnings. I spoke to the NJ Lottery Commission and they opened up an investigation. Since I still had my ticket, they were able to scan it and find out exactly where and when the ticket was scanned. Their investigation found Paradise Deli guilty. Unfortunately, no one else has filed an official complaint with the NJ Lottery Commission, so this scam of a store is not being punished. Although it is a very long process, I highly recommend, if you were a victim of Paradise Deli in this scam, that you call up the Lottery Commission to open an investigation against them.
A few things I learned during this process:
1. If you are ever told the store does not have enough money to cover the winnings after they scan your ticket, make sure they print you out another ticket (which they legally have to do) saying that they scanned your ticket.. If you don't take home your money you should be walking out of there with that new ticket as well as your lottery ticket.
2. If you are ever in the situation I was in you can go to any store that sells lottery tickets and ask for a Lottery Claim Form. This is one of the things the NJ Lottery Commission will ask you to fill out.
3. This is not the only illegal practice Paradise Deli takes part in. There is something going through the county right now that may finally result in the store getting some type of punishment. If I hear about the results I will make another post.
4. If you are ever in the area of Newark and Coles in J.C. do not spend a dime in that store. Instead, just walk past the store and yell, "PARADISE DELI IS GUILTY AS HELL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
