Detroit dining experts share their most anticipated restaurant openings for 2024 | Eater Detroit

"A long-awaited brick-and-mortar project from a longtime Detroit foodways figure, this deli and marketplace will occupy ground floor space in the Love Building at Allied Media Project’s new headquarters on Grand River, bringing nutritious vegan options to Core City and building on the founder’s reputation for community-focused food work." - Serena Maria Daniels

If Dante were writing Inferno today, there would be a tenth circle of hell called "Paradise Deli" and it would be reachable exclusively through delivery apps. If I could give this place zero stars, I would, then find a way to go into negative numbers just to fully express the spiritual damage this meal did to me. Calling it “food” is an insult to food, to the idea of food, and to the poor ingredients that died in vain. My entree arrived both overcooked and cold, which I previously believed was physically impossible. The meat had the texture of an old shoe, and the seasoning could best be described as “salt, but angry.” The vegetables were a sad, colorless assortment that tasted like they'd been boiled in regret. The worst part? The delivery apps keep recommending this restaurant to me under new names. Every time I think I’m trying something new, it’s just this culinary cryptid in a different hat, ready to charge $24.99 for a meal that tastes like reheated airport food left on the tarmac. Please stop. I don't want food poisoning anymore.

Google
They have an excellent raw chicken sandwich. The fries are mushy and bland just like I like them. Food poisoning comes with every meal. Free of charge. Queue the owner "We've been in business for 40 years. We're the only place open 24 hours. Enjoy a free cup of coffee to wash down the tapeworms." I will definitely order from here again if I need to lose water weight.

Google
This place is dirty and smelly. Also way overpriced compared to the competitors in the area. Clerk behind the counter was rushed and a little rude. The pictures here are definitely not the real store.

Google
This place is dirty and is using fake names on Door Dash. Tonight I found them on DoorDash as The Grilled Quesadilla Company. Their food is poor quality and they are dishonest people. Avoid at all costs.

Jesus J.

Google
Ridiculously high prices, where do they get their suppliers from? They won't sell you cigarettes or vapes even if you show them your ID, there's always a different weird guy working there, looking all scared, and everything costs double.

Google
Don’t order food from here!!! They advertise themselves as other things on Uber eats and I ordered a chicken sandwich.. oh my god. It was undercooked… I am absolutely disgusted and appalled that this was served 🤢

Raheen M.

Google
This place is masked as Olivia's breakfast cafe on Uber Eats. I am disappointed to discover that this a dirty grocery store that goes by the name Paradise deli & grocery. The deception.🤢 11/27/2023 -This store now shows up as the Breakfast Spot on Uber Eats. Food is still nasty. -I didnt receive anything i ordered. I ordered a wheat bagel got whote bread asked for toasted bacon got partially cooked bagel. Ordered green juice based on their menu they sent a Naked sugar packed drink. Absolutely horrible i will never order from this place again.

Google
I came here expecting a full grocery hoping to get raspberries, fruit cups and yogurt. The photo below is not current, I would describe this as a local bodega. It indeed is open 24/7! They’re very friendly in there.

Yelp
I've never been in but I did have the misfortune of ordering from one of their MANY ghost kitchens on uber eats. It was rancid and as a result I would never eat there on purpose.

Yelp
Disappointing. The hot wings were soggy and a bland mess. The plain wings were somehow even worse--also soggy, and without any redeeming flavor. We asked for sauces on the side and didn't realize they'd drench the wings in them instead. Kind of defeats the point of getting anything "plain."

Bloved E.

Yelp
If they make the woman that works there stay away from the counter and just make food, they would be fine she is very nasty towards customers and doesn't understand very much, prefer the overnight crew there very nice and professional accept when this lady is working there. I have been a customer for many years and she is by far the worst employee.

Yelp
I got Gyros's sandwich and was the best ever. Great service, friendly staff.. Glad to have place open 24 hours near by .

Yelp
PARADISE DELI IS THE WORST STORE IN DOWNTOWN JERSEY CITY I've never complained about a company or store online in the past, but that changes today due to a scam being generated by Paradise Deli, on Newark Ave. (near Coles St.) right here in Downtown Jersey City. This is a long post but I just wanted to educate those who do not know what is going on at this store. Long story short, never spend a cent at Paradise Deli and it's too bad I have to give them a star before posting because they do not deserve even one star. In October I purchased a Pick 3 lottery ticket from Paradise Deli. It turns out the ticket was a winner, worth $275. I went to the store to cash out the ticket. They scanned it and told me they did not have enough money to pay the $275. I thought this was odd at the time. Later, I found out by scanning this winning ticket, they had essentially cashed it. I went back to talk to the manager/owner, David, who essentially lied through his teeth while smiling and acting friendly. He said I must be mistaken and I must have gone to another store and changed his story several times. ("One may smile, and smile, and be a villain. "-- William Shakespeare) When I left the store it was fairly obvious that I had been a victim of a scam. I decided to look at reviews for Paradise Deli. There were three reviews on Yelp, one of which talked about being ripped off from a winning lottery ticket at this establishment. What followed was a very long process of many phone calls and certified letter$$ to obtain my winnings. I spoke to the NJ Lottery Commission and they opened up an investigation. Since I still had my ticket, they were able to scan it and find out exactly where and when the ticket was scanned. Their investigation found Paradise Deli guilty. Unfortunately, no one else has filed an official complaint with the NJ Lottery Commission, so this scam of a store is not being punished. Although it is a very long process, I highly recommend, if you were a victim of Paradise Deli in this scam, that you call up the Lottery Commission to open an investigation against them. A few things I learned during this process: 1. If you are ever told the store does not have enough money to cover the winnings after they scan your ticket, make sure they print you out another ticket (which they legally have to do) saying that they scanned your ticket.. If you don't take home your money you should be walking out of there with that new ticket as well as your lottery ticket. 2. If you are ever in the situation I was in you can go to any store that sells lottery tickets and ask for a Lottery Claim Form. This is one of the things the NJ Lottery Commission will ask you to fill out. 3. This is not the only illegal practice Paradise Deli takes part in. There is something going through the county right now that may finally result in the store getting some type of punishment. If I hear about the results I will make another post. 4. If you are ever in the area of Newark and Coles in J.C. do not spend a dime in that store. Instead, just walk past the store and yell, "PARADISE DELI IS GUILTY AS HELL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yelp
I ordered a grilled chicken, roasted peppers, and mozzarella cheese wrap from UberEats (btw the name they go by on Uber Eats is Aldo's Wraps) I can't even tell you what I received but I know for sure it wasn't what I ordered. The wrap I received contained some type of white sauce, lettuce, tomato, something that looked like it wanted to be chicken, green peppers, AND HUMAN HAIR. I tried to call what I thought was Aldo's Wraps located at 226 Newark Ave come to find out it doesn't exist. Paradise Deli falsely advertises itself as Aldo's Wraps on Uber Eats. A terrible experience I hope people take heed to my experience and stay away from this place.

Yelp
What a sleazy place. I brought in a scratch off that won 5 dollars. He scans it and says "this isnt a winner" I said to the person "Okay give it back" And than he rescans it and says "Oh wait never mind it won" 100% sure he was hoping for me to say "K throw it away"

Yelp
scammers and trash people. scammed me through online order and acted the order was never placed

Holly L.

Yelp
Ordered a Sausage Omelette and it definitely was not an omelette. The butter and jelly did not come wit the toast and the hash browns had the tops of the peppers in it. We ordered drinks and they sent us the wrong one as well. Overall not a good experience and will not be reordering.

Yelp
This restaurant is posing as Philly King on UberEats. The food is absolutely disgusting. I got the philly cheesesteak with fried onions and provolone cheese. Instead I got fried spam and a slice of cold cheese on hero bread. Such a scam front! Don't order from here!!!!

Ashley C.

Yelp
If I can give zero stars I would. I just ordered from here because I wanted a wrap so I ordered a chicken bacon ranch wrap and once it arrived I realized how flat the wrap was. After a few bits I noticed I was just getting bites of bacon and lettuce, I was wondering when I was going to get a piece of chicken. So when I opened the wrap to see what was inside there was only LETTUCE AND BACON WTFF my boyfriend had it worst he just got bacon. And it wasn't even good bacon it was this weird type of bacon to salty to even eat.

Yelp
I WISH THERE WAS A WAY TO GIVE ZERO STARS!!!!. I used to order from this place, and tonight was definitely my last time. They never understand what you are saying. Literally my last call with them was 12 minutes and I only ordered 4 items. After I placed my order, I received a call back from them saying that they were going to charge me an extra $6 for a "service fee' Its funny how you can't speak english, yet you can make sure you call back to charge a fee. Their menu clearly says FREE DELIVERY yet I was told that I was going to be charged $6. I was going to give them a tip, but I think I will just order from somewhere else instead. PS. after 30 minutes I actually called these guys to see where my order was and the person on the phone outright told me he was busy and didnt have time to talk to me. When they get here I will not pay and they can stand outside holding my order all night if they'd like. They will NEVER get another dime from me.

Yelp
Not recommended. First incident, I placed my order around 9AM for an 11AM delivery. The owner left a voicemail saying it's too early and they're canceling the order. I placed another order again at 11AM. Apparently, they did not cancel the previous order and I got my orders doubled. The delivery guy started to complain that my order was a lot, when it's actually they're fault. Second incident, I placed another order and the delivery guy told me I had the wrong zip code. It took a while for them to come and I ended up texting them a GoogleMaps link indicating my address. My zip code is correct. Third incident, the owner called me saying he doesn't have a delivery guy. He was canceling the order but no confirmation has been received that it was canceled. I had to call delivery.com to cancel the order. They did not get any call from the owner. DO NOT ORDER from this merchant.

Yelp
Just your average 24/7 bodega/deli. Sandwiches are OK, and I've eaten a lot of them. They're not nearly as good as the place on Grove Street off of the Path, but this spot is super-duper convenient for me, so this is where I stop at 4 a.m.. No complaints and the staff are friendly. Apparently they are doing online orders now. A few weeks ago they handed out some "$5 off online order" cards to friends of mine. I haven't tried it and I may never. Cash only is the only downside of Paradise, and unfortunately the ATM is broken 50% of the time. The have at least three old credit card swipers behind the counter, but I don't know what/when they are from/for.

Yelp
I WISH I COULD GIVE ZERO RATING!!!!! This place sucks, the owner and workers are dirty, they wear the same cloths for every day. I've never seen them wash their hands, I use to go there only to get cigarettes but I stop that also!!!!! If your hungry there is a nice little sandwich shop just off the corner of Nwk & Grove street......

Yelp
I used to love their breakfast sandwiches and fresh deli meats and cheeses- BUT when my friend ordered a tuna melt that had two maggots in it I can no longer eat at this establishment. The worse part of all is that the manager said we can have $5.00 off on our next order- really!?

Yelp
Honestly, I love this deli. Incredible sandwiches, and cool guys working the counter. Open late which is a plus. Always a nice spot when I'm in town from california and get the late night munchies!

Yelp
If i could give less than a 1 star review i would. extremly poor customer service skills. My true rating for how poorly i was treated (on the phone) is A--

Ryan R.

Yelp
I WOULD LOVE TO give them a zero, they DO NOT honor their own prices. They have one price on their menue, and try to sell things for a different price. That is false advertisement. Apart from the place being ridiculously dirty. Avoid at all costs. If you want a good sandwich go to 2nd street deli. IF you want a good egg sandwich, go to wonder bagel. These guys are liars and thieves. They will rip you off, and if you point them out on it they try to argue with you. SCUMBAGS.

Yelp
I love this place. First, they are open all the time, they are always friendly, and once I order something more than 3 times, they always remember what I like! My boyfriend and I are loyal to this place for snacks on the go or late night sandwichs which are made with care. I get a toasted criossant with hot ham and cheese. They don't microwave it but instead turn on the grill and make it, even at 2am! So I had to give some kudos to Paradise, where Ive never heard a rude comment from the staff. Check it out!

Yelp
stay away .. grocery part/ convince part of this establishment prices are 2 times higher than any other grocery/convince store i've ever been to. to add insult to injury. ordered a coffee to go with milk and sugar and the milk. was spoiled. stay away !!

Boris S.

Yelp
It's funny that this place gets two sets of ratings - either 5 stars or 1 star with people thinking that even this is too much. 5 star reviews sound absolutely the same and come from people with names like Samir - family? I did not eat at this place. I bought a Groupon $12 for $28 and the business refused to honour it, trying to sell me $15 worth of food, instead of $28. The deli is a regular store with one corner used for food preparation. It is dirty and crowded with shells offering all kinds of stuff, employees who serve food wear street clothes and don't appear to have the best hygiene. So, be warned.

Andrew M.

Yelp
Convenient and there's some value in having a 24/7 "grocery" store. ...but the prepared food is terrible and the place is dirty. Only recommend for cold drinks/coffee/cigarettes.

Stacey W.

Yelp
Ordered a sandwich and salad through seamless and the delivery guy tried to get me to pay cash! I ordered a Greek salad and they sent me the shreds of lettuce that's used for sandwiches with olives. The bread on the sandwich was hard. Ugh was hoping for a good place to order late night food! Def unsatisfied.

Yelp
So I just got back from Europe where it was super cold for the whole month I was gone, I get back to ny and it's so warm that me and my girl go out for a walk in the pouring rain at 2 at night(jet lag). So we are walking down Newark ave looking for some place to get something to eat and we were hoping that dominos will be open but they close at 1... across the street we see paradise deli so we laugh at the name and walk in, I ask if I can pay using a discover card and the young man by the register told me that they do accept credit cards but he does not know about discover so I ask him to charge me for two sandwiches but he tells me the minimum is 10 so I assume that I need to get something else so I get 1/2 a gal of milk. I expected him to charge everything but no he did just the milk 3$, then right after I sign he charges me for the sandwiches 10$ WTF...... Ok but it gets worse. Then they ask me if I want it on a hero roll or on a Keizer roll I go with the latter and the guy gives me a wonderful smile(soon I found out he was smiling because he got rid of bread that sat there for over a month... it was the most stale bread I ever ate in my life, and I just came back from Europe where I ate fresh bread everyday so this was hideous) but before we knew that we waited 10 minutes for him to make it lol, yes 10 if not more I'm not exaggerating. We started to think the sandwich will be god like if he spent so long making it (now when I think about it he was probably cutting the bread with a chain saw because it was that stale) but the first bad sign was that after 7 mins he went up front to get mustard from a shelf meant for retail (how the duck do you run out of mustard in a sandwich place). This is taking up too much of my time but I just want to add that they did not even add Mayo to a Turkey provolone sandwich, it was just lettuce turkey and provolone... zero stars, ZERO.

Reuben B.

Yelp
This is my go to deli in the area. The guys who work there are real nice. Prices are decent, and they have window at the street so you can get coffee or tea from outside. They have a lot of kinds of tea. I also eat sandwiches and candy here, I'm happy with the selection and quality of everything. They're open 24 hours.
