Hold The Fort: All Along The Watchtower Hotels

"On Galicia’s Monterreal Peninsula, with a commanding view over a port and a protected bay, stands the Parador de Baiona, a medieval fortress that’s been refashioned as a luxurious and atmospheric 122-room hotel. Two restaurants serve upscale traditional Galician fare with a heavy emphasis on locally sourced seafood; not many hotels can offer a walk along two kilometers of fortress walls." - Mark Fedeli

The position and presentation of the building are first class though for a superior room some room and bathroom fixtures and fittings need to be upgraded. Mini bar fridge not in good condition and shower head would not stay upright but flop down when medium water pressure was applied. Food what was food was! But what was not was very poor. However staff first class.

Never keen to leave bad reviews, but I feel with this one that unless people say something, things never change for the better. We stayed here after a long day walking the Camino. In our room we received what I can only describe as the worst mattress i have ever had the misfortune of sleeping on. How do I know this? Because I own a mattress company in London. In this hotel they have a 13cm Bonnel spring mattress with zero to no comfort layer above. That mattress if used at all, would be the lowest grade of mattress capable of manufacture, save for perhaps the floor of a hay barn. Estimated cost of mattress 50 euro. So what doesn’t add up, is why such a thing is inside what is clearly a very luxurious hotel! To top it off, despite not opening the windows at all, we were divebombed (and bitten) by mosquitos all night whilst we tossed and turned on our hideous bed. |Grim. Sorry Parador - not good enough, you took a misstep here. Particularly disappointing for a hotel that provides accommodation to hundreds of cyclists and walkers who want a goods night sleep.

Fantastic location, beautiful property and very kind and efficient staff! This parador and the town of Baiona are well worth a visit. We especially loved drinks on the terrace overlooking the ocean and the walk around the peninsula.

We stayed two nights in Baiona and it was perfect from start to end. The room had a view of the sea side of the castle, it was spacious and the restaurant really good, as we have become accustomed to in all Paradores (visited 6-7 of them yet).

We were surprised to find that the interior of the rooms were very tired and very poorly decorated. As an example, the room that we were booked into by the window and behind the curtains, the paint was literally peeling off the walls. The ceiling had damp patches. This was all very unsightly for a four-star hotel.  In the bathroom the wood at the bottom by the freestanding shower was twisted and warped with damp. Not only was this unsightly but the reason for this was clear. The shower leaked profusely at the bottom, leaving a lot of water on the marble floor. This was also a health and safety issue because the floor was very slippy with such water spillage. We stopped using this shower and used the shower in the bath. These conditions were frankly unaccepable. It is such a pity that we had such tired and poorly decorated bedrooms.  It really took the shine off what was to be such a pleasant stay.

Beautiful property! It was better than the pictures! We had an overnight stay here with some friends. We walked around the entire property. We ate lunch at the Tavern La Pinta, it was fantastic! We hope to return soon!

The most unwelcoming reception staff we encountered on our Camino trip.  Rooms are tired and are overdue an upgrade. Not worth the money.  Lots of nicer small boutique hotels with the most welcoming of staff.  I would avoid.

Just to seat at that balcony and enjoy the view to the bay, was enough to recommend this hotel to others. The privileged location and near the town at walking distance placed this hotel at a top position. A place to return in the future with the family.

Yelp
I mean...amazing. Breathtaking and gorgeous and delicious and comfortable and quiet and amazing. You will never find another view like this one. You will never enjoy another property like this one. I don't care if you have to drive across Spain--get here. It's a lifetime experience, start to finish, top to bottom. Perfecto.

Yelp
Even though we did NOT stay at the hotel, we did make a detour and stop by as per friends recommendations.... too bad the hotel was sold out as it would have been a treat to stay here. This place is sitting on top of a hill overlooking the Atlantic sea at its best.... views are beautiful and the hotel has a surrounding walking trek of several kilometers .... if you don't want or can't stay the night, stop by and walk the premises... it is worth while. There is a lot of Christianity in this place and you do feel the monastery touch... All in all, glad we came here... Enjoy

Yelp
We had lunch in the smaller section of this restaurant (just off the bar). The view was fantastic, but the service was curt and unfriendly. The server acted as though she was doing us a huge favor allowing us to sit at one of her tables to order a meal. The menu is small.... a few tapas and a few sandwiches. When we inquired about the possibility of altering a menu item (specifically having the vegetable sandwich made without bread so it would be a salad) we were flatly refused.... without the server even checking with the kitchen staff. The food we did get (a chicken sandwich and an ensalada mista) were adequate, but nothing special. Honestly the free peanuts served at the bar were more satisfying.
