Arrival & Parking
Driving through the Alhambra gates among tourists is surreal. The hotel provides an excellent video guide for arrival (essential—avoid going through Granada itself). Reserved gated parking (15 spaces) is just meters from the hotel. We confirmed car parking space weeks ahead of arrival which I’ve found a remarkably rare behaviour.||Check-in
Functional, efficient, English-speaking. Helpful with local recommendations. Bags taken to room.||Rooms|* Room 106: Decent size with extra bed. Beds were two singles pushed together, plus a very firm fold-out. Linens stiff, pillows synthetic, duvet without cover. Décor clean and modern, but lacking a bit of character in my opinion. Bathroom nice aesthetically but poorly designed (nowhere for wash bags, overcomplicated shower). Faced a garden with water feature—noisy toads at night (I liked it, others may not).
|* Issues: Air con leaked over our bags (previously known—towels already placed to catch drips). Ongoing building works 5m from window: loud circular saws, privacy intrusion, parts of garden closed.
|Service & Compensation
Staff moved us to another larger room (115), but only after repacking, and persistence. Compensation initially offered: a bottle of wine (wife doesn’t drink). Only when I requested the official complaints form did they waive parking charges. Felt reactive and hollow, not proactive.||Dining & Bar|* Bar/Terrace: Beautiful views of Generalife. First visit (afternoon coffee/cake) was warm and hospitable. Evenings less so—staff focused on restaurant setup, slow to acknowledge bar guests, and once served chicken nuggets instead of the listed dish. Staff often seemed busy but inattentive. Will process of making guests stand and wait to be served only to wave them in when the staff eventually acknowledged them.
|* Restaurant and bar: Interior and terrace available. Food generally good; desserts (esp. ice cream cake) excellent. Service inconsistent—sometimes friendly, other times reluctant. Javier with glasses and a beard stood out as the most friendly staff member. The women waitresses were friendly also. Some of the men could do with scowling less and smiling more.
|* Breakfast: Adequate but staff appeared unwilling, as though guests were intruding on the morning I visited. Typical of other paradores. Eggs upon request. Don’t even think about taking a pan o chocolate with you for a 11 o clock snack.
|Atmosphere & Décor
Calm, quiet, clean, with tasteful art and nods to heritage. Courtyard is a lovely relaxation space. Unfortunately, renovation work limited garden access and dulled enjoyment, Why during peak season?||Value & Overall
We paid €800 for two nights, plus food and parking. Location is undeniably unique: staying within the Alhambra walls and exploring at night is magical. But service was inconsistent, disruptions were poorly handled, and compensation was begrudging.||Verdict
Paradores Granada trades heavily on location, but without it, the hotel wouldn’t justify the price. Hospitality was efficient but rarely warm. I wouldn’t return or recommend it to close friends.
