Holiday Pop-Up Bars and Restaurants in San Diego | Eater San Diego

"The University Heights bar is using its unique indoor/outdoor space to host its first-ever Christmas market, which will run through December 31. Called “Park & ReXmas”, it features holiday drinks including warm cocktails in a holiday mug like the Hot & Buttered spiced with cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves, and Irish Night, a mix of Bushmill Irish Whiskey, orgeat, and cold brew coffee. Local craft and food vendors will be in the house on weekends with a lineup of guest bartenders scheduled throughout the month, from Nicollee Dietz of Chef Angels to cocktail pros behind Realm of the 52 Remedies." - Candice Woo

I love this little place with all these little buildings. It has a bar and an outside courtyard and a separate building for a band. It was really adorable. There is no food at Park and Rec but you're welcome to bring it is and there's plenty of restaurants right along the street.

I visited Park & rec for the very first time for an event and had an amazing experience! We were in the back it was open, it felt perfect! The music wasn’t too loud and they had a lot of heaters. The staff was incredibly friendly and attentive, making sure we always had what we needed. The drink menu was extensive, offering a variety of unique cocktails that were both delicious and beautifully presented. I especially loved the lemon drop, which had a perfect balance of flavors. The bar also had cozy seating areas, making it a great spot to relax and enjoy the evening with friends. I can't wait to go back!

Parking here sucks. Meters until 6pm but if you go around the corner on Adams, it’s free. We came right when they opened so it was early enough to find free parking. This place serves drinks and has music at night. Nice cocktail lounge. They don’t serve food but you’re allowed to bring in your own food. Johnston’s next door has awesome sliders. Drinks at Park & Rec are delicious and they make awesome mocktails. I got cruel summer, picture of you and pink Cadillac. Cruel summer was on the sweet side with pineapple nice, picture of you tasted like cough syrup and pink Cadillac was like a spicy margarita with the Tajin on the rim. Atmosphere is chill with the multiple outdoor area. Nice vibe, plenty of seating.

Google
What a cool spot! Came here for a DJ night which was awesome. Not too too packed on a Thursday night but enough people to get a good vibe and enjoy the night. Full bar with some specials for the night. Great interior and DJs were super!! Would definitely come back for another girls night out or just to chill and enjoy the night

A few months ago, Park and Rec started hosting an event for songwriters on Monday nights called Writer’s Round. It’s an intimate space in the bar’s “greenhouse.” It’s an open mic styled event that features local songwriters, with two rounds of random performers taking turns sharing their music and the songwriting process. Artists like Lee Coulter, Rachel de Koekkoek, Evan Diamond, Joshua Taylor, Lauren Leigh, Jeff Berkeley, Lisa Sanders, and Aaron Bowen. Such an organic spot to catch the songwriting community.

I can't believe I just discovered this place. We were dining at Madison for dinner next door and decided to come here for a drink afterwards. We went in around 10:00 p.m. so it was just starting to get busy, which is my preferred crowd size anyways. I love that they have multiple bars and a sense of different spaces. When you walk in you enter the first space that has a bar and its own set of music if you continue to walk towards the back you enter an outdoor space that has another bar into the right a dance floor with a DJ and a bar there as well! The multiple bars really spread out the line so you didn't have to wait forever for a drink. And wow, drinks are so affordable! I ordered two drinks, wanted tequila soda and one a Mezcal Paloma and it was $22 in total! I really love this spot it has something for everybody, if you want to just chill and talk and their outdoor space or in their front bar, or head to the dance floor in the back.

Google
This place is hoppin'. Big crowds on weekends. Space is tight but lots of fun. 20s-30s high energy crowd. Staff is awesome. Only downside is the almost total absence of parking in the area. That is a city planning issue of course so no dings on the stars. Take an Uber or walk a block or two. Worth it.

Popped in for a drink and ended up picking up dinner from the Thai place down the street and staying for trivia. Friendly staff and crowd. Great cocktails. Fantastic patio!

Yelp
Unique cocktails and lovely vibes! My friend and I stopped here before dinner. The drink menu was very interesting, and we noticed many drinks had different infused liquors. I ordered the Island Style which had Li Hing Mui infused tequila, pineapple, lime, curaçao and blood orange. It was unlike anything I have tried. It kinda tasted like one of those orange slice candies in liquid form, but in the best way possible. The bartender was attentive and service was quick and efficient, but I should also note it wasn't very busy,
google avatar

Jaiden N.

Yelp
When we came there was barely a line to enter the dance floor until the late evening, so plan accordingly! Super cool atmosphere, and different from other bars in the sense that it has multiple bars to access within the establishment. Drinks were average prices and it was fairly clean when we were partying! Nice place to check out!

Yelp
Went this evening for a surprise birthday and many times before, as well. Everyone enjoyed their drinks. I especially loved my "start me up" cocktail with cold brew and licor 43! They also had a ton of delicious non-alcoholic options, which I really appreciate! And since they don't serve food they let you bring your own food in, which was awesome! Staff is always friendly and all around good vibes.

Yelp
Fun place to meet with friends for drinks and hang out. Friendly staff all around. Spacious, beautiful decor and theme. They have happy hour, Monday game nights, Dj & live music, movies in the park and trivia night. Such a great idea to bring the community together.

Yelp
Pros: - Decently affordable for the quality of fun provided - Variety of hangout zones to choose from whether you want an intimate conversation, a wallflower spot to people watch from, or a noisy lit up dance room where you can lose all senses - Crowded but in a joyous and Morrissey-drenched, "Take me out tonight where there's music and there's people and they're young and alive" kind of way Cons: - Door guy was condescending toward groups of women (who were attractive, fashionable, and well-mannered) - Not much nearby for bar crawling - Always a line for the restroom - You have to assert your place in queue at the bars

Yelp
i went to Park and Rec to watch the Cathause review!! An amazing time and will be back! Parking is a little difficult to give yourself some extra time in case you have to be there at a certain time. Cool energy and tasty drinks!

Yelp
Love that there is a variety of environments to hang out in. There's an indoor section with a bar and booths, a "quieter" outdoor sit/stand area, and a loud, busy dance "room." When I went, there were two DJs (one in the indoor area & one in the dance area) playing different types of music, which was fun to bounce between.

Yelp
It's a gorgeous venue with a huge outdoor patio that looks like you're inside a small city, New Orleans, which is why it used to be called "Bourbon Street." We used to go here all of the time--many great memories. Only now, you cannot smoke or vape on the outdoor patio, which totally and completely sucks. The patio is large enough to even section some of it off for smoking, but nope. I guess only one vice is allowed. Too bad because they're definitely losing a lot of Bourbon St. customers. I don't know how vaping became so demonized. It's only water vapor, doesn't smell, and is entirely innocuous but okay.

Yelp
Came to UHeights for a quick drink and was pleasantly surprised by the transitions between indoor and outdoor - felt like there were 4 different vibes going on at the same time! Bartenders are very attentive to detail and take their time with drinks - glad to see quality being prioritized over churning out drinks Music was a relaxed vibe (live DJ set) and the courtyard offers tons of random doodads to let your mind wander Can't speak for the food but at least the drinks are tasty :) Cheers, P&R!

Yelp
The staff here is extremely rude and just straight up don't seem like they care about there customers. Hopefully they were just having a bad day. But yikes

Yelp
My family and I stopped here for drinks on a Saturday evening while we waited for our table to be ready at Madison. Drinks were reasonable priced and there is a ton of indoor and outdoor seating. I had a glass of pinot noir, which was good.

Ryan P.

Yelp
This place is so friggin cool. Where do I begin? Inside is very classy, with an art deco vibe. Walk outside and you feel like you're in New Orleans. Want to dance? They got a second building in back for that. Amazing drinks also. I'm only docking a star because of the drink consistency. You can order the same drink and get two very different drinks depending on who's making them.

Yelp
I visited Park & Rec on Saturday and had an excellent time on their back patio. The weather was perfect, and sitting outside was a delight. The bartender crafted a delicious old fashioned, and the friendly service added to the experience. I'd recommend going before the DJ starts if you prefer a quieter atmosphere, as it tends to get loud and busy later in the night, but if you enjoy the dancing scene, then later is best for you!

Yelp
Out with the girls and celebrating a gal's birthday It is a big and small place! Especially only one stall of bathroom ~~~!???!!! Hello?!! Lol There is a live music stage! It's fun when we go find the other gals and find them ...it was fun ending it but enjoy the live music and chills with the singers !! Rock n roll \m/!!! I haven't tried the food here just the drinks at the bar. The security here is on top by trying to clean our table of empty drinks!!
google avatar

Yelp
Georgia Rain and an assortment of other drinks This place was so cute! Great outdoor patio space for drinks and trivia night. Only downside is this bar doesn't serve any food. Thankfully there were lots of options very close to the bar, and the bar allows you to order food into the place. Drinks were pretty dang tasty too
google avatar

Gordon W.

Yelp
We only came here for drinks, so that's all I can really comment on, but the food menu did look good. I'd definitely consider eating here too. I cannot remember our bar tenders name, but he was phenomenal. We wanted real cocktails, and he delivered! Great ambiance, great staff, reasonable prices. We had a great chat with him too. Highly recommend, and going back for sure, probably to try the food.

Yelp
One of the only places left not charging a cover.... And that's why it's PACKED 24/7! Park & Rec is a good time with some good drinks and great music. There's indoor bar, there's outdoor bar, there's a little secluded area where a full on rave is going on and sometimes if you're lucky, they're making and selling taco's outside! I love this place, but if you're claustrophobic, stay far away. It is crowded. I feel like I lose half my drink from everyone just bumping into each other. The drinks themselves are good, but pricey. You're definitely not paying dive bar prices here. I haven't tried happy hour yet, but I'm sure it's even more packed than usual. Service is always good and they're playing some of the best music here.
google avatar

Yelp
Great vibes all around. There are three areas when you walk in. The first area looks more like a pub with warm lighting and nice tables (if you are able to find an open one) to sit in. Went on a Saturday night so there was live DJs. One in the first "pub" room and another in what I like to call the "party room" because this is where most people go to dance and be around loud music. Separating the two rooms is an open area that has seats and heaters outside. In every section of Park & Rec there is a place to order drinks, but in the open area only I saw that they were also selling tacos! Overall the staff were nice and fast and I'll definitely be coming back again!
google avatar

Rexie S.

Yelp
This place was popping! They had different rooms with different deejays. Everywhere was so packed. They had a nachos bar right before entering one of the other rooms! We are definitely coming back!

Yelp
I've been here quite a few times now. It's such a fun place to hang out with friends and grab a few drinks. Before the pandemic, there was this other room where you could play some games and there would also be a DJ towards the latter of the night on weekends. Last time I went, the room was locked- for employees only, I believe. It still was a fun place, but more chill. We took over a few of the benches in the patio area and went to the bar to order our drinks. They had a few interesting new cocktails that we tried. One was called Apple Bottom Jeans, which consisted of monkey shoulder, green apple, caramel liquor, and lime. It was nice that they let me decorate it with a gummy on top. The cocktails have interesting names and tasted great. The wait can be a bit long at times to get your drinks through. Overall, a great place to end or start your night out!

Yelp
Roomy patio and nice inside, Park & Rec is a good place for groups. I went on a Sunday afternoon and the patio had a DJ blaring 2000s bops. Great selection of music and since it wasn't packed, few people were dancing. I opted to sit inside at the bar, and watched some baking show the TV was playing lol. Their menu isn't very big, so be sure to check it out before you go. I ordered a Rollin in the Deep, which is lychee-infused rum paired with tropical fruits. It was very sour so you'll definitely enjoy it if you like that kind of taste. It was also a bit refreshing. I believe I heard the bartender say that a shot of mezcal was $11, which is just a few dollars short from a cocktail. Overall, it's a decent spot in the heart of the UH business district. I'd go back if they added a new rotation of drinks to their menu
google avatar

Kamara M.

Yelp
This place is huge, but it's such a cozy like bar. This was my first time coming. The bouncer was sweet and remembered the little details about my date and I, as we left. My drink was delicious. I also ordered level up. A little smoky and strong, but good nonetheless. The music was a medley of things. Good selection. They don't serve food, but they allow you to get food from other places in the area, and outside a a vendor was setting up to serve, what smelled like mouthwatering tacos. They also have an outside where they seemed to be setting up to play music, and plenty of bars through out the menu. I'll definitely be coming back. Such an amazing vibe.
google avatar

Yelp
A great place for casual meet ups with friends. The drinks were great! Bartenders were all super friendly and attentive. They have a ton of weekly events which I plan on checking out! Can't wait to go back.

Yelp
It's coo just gotta be there at the right date and time . Look up their website for events that evening you plan on going

Yelp
I forgot to take photos of my drink but it was called sugar lips or something. Love the open areas space in & out and the music playlist was great , came there mid day, gorgeous out and it was a pretty quiet laid back feels. Which was exactly what I wanted.

Eugie L.

Yelp
We popped in for a quick drink early in the evening and were very impressed! The drinks were delicious and and atmosphere was very nice. The outdoor areas were pretty while the interior had a cool vibe. We'll return with friends soon.

Yelp
It was my first time here, and I had some reservations/concerns. But first and foremost, Park & Rec has by far the best hip hop and Bay Area slaps in S.D. The DJs are fantastic and keep the guests dancing all night long. This place was insanely crowded! I don't believe there is a limit/capacity? It was difficult to move around, and I was afraid of a stampede like Itaewon. The nastiest part of the night was when I saw a girl in a green dragon costume pee standing up while her weird friends covered for her. She used the courtyard wall as a little leaning area to pee! She peed in the middle of a crowd, and the taco lady was posted right there! I know she's dressed as a beastly green dragon, but why would she pee next to the taco lady? I informed an employee, but he stated that he would need to catch her in the act. Look down, bro, you can clearly see the trail of piss she left near us. We witnessed her peeing! You can smell her piss. But that's probably because the lines for the women's restrooms were so long. I spent far more time waiting in the restroom line than I did waiting in line for a drink. There was no one to keep it clean or restock it with toilet paper. I had to wipe with a seat cover, but at least there were seat covers. I enjoy the various areas with different music playing. All night, I was into all the hyphy music. There were times when I walked into the small house and it felt edgy. And N'syc was being played in the area near the restroom. So, whatever music you prefer, you have options. Within the bar, there was also a taco stand! This was fantastic! Drinking and eating $4 street tacos that were actually very good was a treat. Music 100/10 by @cuffinsandiego Overall guest experience 6/10 Cleanliness 0/10

Yelp
Lena, Sunny& Jay were soooo awesome, as I drunkly post this! They were so nice and so accommodating, especially as I felt like I was annoyingly bugging them for water and attention. It does get a bit packed, music on a Friday night was just okay..
google avatar

Gabriel N.

Yelp
Amazing bar in San Diego and perhaps one of my favorites. Park & Rec really stands out compared to other bars in the area because of the amount of space that they have. They essentially have 3 main areas for people. You have your normal bar space, an outdoor courtyard area and an area with live music. Each area has a bar you can order from which makes it all the better. Drinks and cocktails here are about average price. I do appreciate that they have their own cocktail menu and the bartenders here whip up some tasty and strong drinks for sure. I got pretty tipsy off two of their cocktails. Overall, a great bar and one that I would definitely come back to!
google avatar

Andrea V.

Yelp
Came here on a Friday night for a girls night +1 of their boyfriends and was pleasantly surprised by the whole vibe. I was DD that night so I ordered a yummy mock tail that had a virgin gin in the recipe and I absolutely loved it. They had some hot dogs on the side patio area for sale along with some other junk food. I also enjoyed they played mostly reggaeton while I was there. I'll be coming back.
google avatar

Marisa G.

Yelp
This is my local neighborhood watering hole and I can't say enough great things about it. Last Saturday I threw a birthday party there and the bartenders and staff did an amazing job! If anyone is looking for a great venue to throw a party, this is definitely the best spot!
google avatar

Yelp
I've been here mutiple time and this place has been my usual go to. It was a great place to have small get together with friends to have a good time. Unfortunately, this past week, i had a recent encounter with certain staff members that have left me disheartened and compelled to share my experience. The staff here has always been friendly and i have never has a issue but this was the first time I was served by one of the girls wearing a beanie that was being very rude. At first, I shrugged it of, everyone has a bad night every now and then but as the night went on, It was clear that she was being discrimitory and being deliberately rude to us. We came in to have a good time but her attitude changed that for us real quick. I've been in the service industry before and I understand there can be disrespectful customers, especially for a place where drinks are being served but we to be short or nasty to paying customer who are just trying to order drink is uncalled for. Sad to say this will be the last time being here, and I will no longer recommend this place to my other friends who come and visit SD for a good time.
google avatar

Darcie V.

Yelp
Always a fun time at this bar. The drinks are great and the bartenders are usually very nice. On slower nights that I've been here, they are also open to making fun/unique drinks based on what you like
google avatar

Delaney L.

Yelp
Danielle made me a special cocktail with aloe and gin it was very refreshing. She was a very kind and friendly. Thank you Danielle!
google avatar

Lucas S.

Yelp
Great Club, Lively Atmosphere, vibes are on point. Drinks are still expensive here you can't escape the downtown drink prices. However, friendly bartenders and people. Can get too crowded sometimes even to the point of having to close early due to a lack of crowd control. Usually is a line so you want to get there earlier rather than later. Glad I found this place!
google avatar

Melissa S.

Yelp
can never go wrong with park & rec! always a good idea for casual drinks, get the night started or being here for a fun night. This place is usually an after place: get some food at madison or any other spot in the area then head to park & rec for drinks. All of their cocktails are great, i've never had a drink I did not like here. The outdoor area makes it feel like you're at someones backyard just hanging out having some drinks. The only negative thing would be parking. Even though this small strip of food and drinks isnt long, it does get busy and parking can be difficult during the evening. If you live close enough to uber then do so!
google avatar

Lili W.

Yelp
This place is nice and very packed on a Saturday! It just needs more bathrooms in my opinion. Love the outdoorsy vibes
google avatar

Romyn S.

Yelp
Great place to hang out and chill! They don't really serve food so you can typically bring your own or there might be a food truck or something some days. I have gone here to use the little house space for my sister's wedding meet up with all the bridal party and grooms party (pre-COVID) and I have just gone here to have a few drinks and chill. Atmosphere - This place has a great vibe and not a rowdy kind of place. There's indoor but mainly outdoor areas and the bathrooms are cool too. Service - People are pretty nice and sometimes you can request a song and they'll play it! They're pretty attentive and when they say they'll do something, they do it! Cost - Average, nothing special to say about this. Parking - Street parking and it can be pretty busy depending on when you go so you either look for parking on that street or the streets parallel to it. Good place to chill with friends! Or start and then go on to the next thing!
google avatar

Gamini G.

Yelp
They have a really cool ambiance with indoor and outdoor areas. Their cocktails are affordable and tasty. They also have a DJ dance floor!
google avatar

Vivian R.

Yelp
Tasty cocktails in a cute spot! They have plenty of seating, but make sure to get here early because it gets busy as the night goes on. Service was fantastic and bartenders were friendly. You have to order at the bar and it can get busy, but they were pretty fast. I ordered 2 different cocktails and both were soooooo good. They were pretty strong, too! Can't wait to come back to try the other cocktails... cheers!

Yelp
I had not been to Parc & Rec for over 6 months and noticed lots of changes in my most recent visit. The back area, once a play ground with a life-size three-in-a-row and dance floor with an additional stage and platform dance area was cleared out, replaced with charming oversized potted plants, strings of lights, and petite tables, a la hidden garden and a hidden gem. The ambiance had turned quiet and pleasant where before it was set up for social interaction and dancing the night away. We ordered waffle fries and breaded mushroom bites off of the new and revamped menu, with charming names and surprising takes on simple foods. The waffle fries were crispy and large. The mushroom fries were crunchy and satisfying. A charming and rustic spot in University Heights, staged and remade into a courtyard garden.
google avatar

Keeka K.

Yelp
I'm not a cocktail drinker, and I found the beer selection lacking. Granted, they're across from a brewery, but who isn't across from a brewery in San Diego? Also, there are no even subtle allusions to the TV show, so the name is misleading for Leslie Knope fans. The only other positive aspects besides "acceptable" beer: the bouncer is nice, and the vibe is decent.
google avatar

Hailey C.

Yelp
Service is great bar tenders are super friendly! Great vibes love the music and the space!

Yelp
Clean and quaint spot with a back courtyard. Drinks are recently priced and yummy. Friendly bar staff.

Yelp
We celebrated my cousins birthday here and I loved it!! They have an area for parties where you can bring your decorations and food. They have indoors and outdoors with heaters (much needed for those cold nights). Drinks were delicious and the staff was really nice!
google avatar

Californian S.

Yelp
I rarely drink unless maybe it's a holiday or special occasion, and a few years ago my friend chose this place to celebrate my birthday. I liked the venue with the outdoor seating and decorations, however it took forever to get served at the bar despite there not being a line and the bartender wasn't that friendly. I don't remember what my cocktail was called, but it tasted okay and I thought the garnishes were cute! My friend thought it was kinda weird that I ate the dried blood orange (rind and all)...oh well.
google avatar

Sofia N.

Yelp
Came here a few weeks ago for the first time. Its a cute first date spot if you come on a weekday because its not too crowded. The menu for drinks is small which i like because I am terrible at decisions. The drinks were delicious, the service was 10/10. On weekends they have live music (no cover charge) and they have multiple areas to order drinks from so you dont need to wait in line too long. Street parking, might be difficult sometimes but not impossible.
