The Best New State Fair Foods for 2024 | Eater Dallas

"A nostalgia-forward banana pudding soda is built like the dessert itself: a caramel-coated cup filled with banana ice cream, chunks of Nilla Wafers, banana pudding and whipped cream. It’s an unabashedly rich, creamy treat that will appeal strongly to fans of classic banana pudding and shakes." - Courtney E. Smith

Park Road Soda Shoppe was such a cute little place!!! it looks like an old-school diner. The service was fantastic! My friend and I each had ice cream and it was very delicious. They had many toppings to choose from and a lot of different things on the menu. Would definitely go back!

Google
A frequent favorite! The food is very simple, classic soda shop with vintage decor. Great for family’s or couples who want to share a milkshake. Have been a customer for a decade and never had a bad experience!

Google
This place was great! We tried their strawberry and Truffle, salted Carmel milkshakes. It was great! For entrees we had their foot long chili dog and grilled chicken sandwich accompanied with macaroni and cheese, and tots! The chicken was the best part since it was marinated and had a nicely spiced crust, with moist interior.

Waitstaff is super nice. The kitchen is shady and incompetent. Either cant read a ticket or just can't cook. It's too bad. You dont get second chances when you try to poison people. TO THE KITCHEN: READ THE TICKETS!!! Make the food that people order. No extras, don't leave things off, simply make orders as they are written. If you mess up, REMAKE IT!! Y'all are going to make people sick!

WOW! We were in the shopping center and normally go to Jenni’s for sweets but we decided to go into this place and get some Coke floats. NEVER AGAIN. From the moment we walked in we could feel the irritation from both of the servers. I asked if we could place a to go drink order and was met with a dirty look. I should’ve walked out and took my business elsewhere but against my best judgement we stayed. One of my daughters felt so uncomfortable that she went outside to wait. Between the girls working and the tables staring, it was a lot. Maybe this place isn’t used to a little bit of diversity. A Mexican mom, brown kid, white kid and African American baby was probably too much for this crowd. Staring is rude and being unkind is rude. On the way out one of our coke floats fell out of the cup holder in the stroller and made a huge mess. I felt awful but can’t help but think it was karma for the experience we had. I understand having a bad day and not giving the best service but this was not that. Haven’t felt that uncomfortable in a very long time. Thank you Park Road Soda Shoppe staff and guests for letting me know I’m not welcome there.

Everybody here is very friendly! The ice cream was Delicious! Our server Catina was the best! She can make you a real thick milkshake if you like! Cozy 50's style spot.....And clean.. I want to try breakfast here next!

Google
This place has such a nice vibe. It’s like walking into an oldtimey soda shop. The service was great and the food was great too. I’m definitely coming back😊

Google
This place was just absolutely amazing! They have wonderful service awesome food, great milkshakes floats banana splits and the atmosphere is very welcoming and fun. I would recommend it to anyone.

Yelp
Perfect little local diner vibes. We tried the following: - cheeseburger: tastes homemade in the best way - hot dog 'all the way': I forget the term they use for all the way but it has, I believe, chili / onion/ slaw. I don't even like hot dogs and this was tasty - fries: yum - fried pickles: so good! the ranch with it is also delish They also had Vanilla Coke which I know is a unique thing that isn't for everyone but it's my favorite - and great nugget ice! We will be here quite often I imagine.

Yelp
If you want to ruin your day...Go here! I don't know who scowling woman in charge was...but after how she treated me...and the burger was dry...the soda was flat and $4.... I'll suggest if you want good food atleast....Go to Shake shack. It's across the parking lot. I heard it used to be a decent place to eat at a long time ago...but it's gone down since then I guess.

Yelp
Park Road Soda Shoppe is a Charlotte staple that has been around since the 90s. It's a 1950s style diner that is heavy on nostalgia. The space is small and demand is high so be prepared to wait a little bit, but they get food out fast and the service is great and friendly. Most recently I stopped in and after a 15 minute wait, our hostess advised us that there were two seats open at the bar. Their menu consists of your staples, burgers, and hot dogs for lunch, eggs and pancakes for breakfast, and of course no 50s diner would be complete without some delicious ice cream sundaes and floats. If you are a fan of diners I highly recommend stopping in as this is one of my favorites in the city. Their burgers in particular are very delicious coming with slaw onions mustard and chili. I prefer mine without the slaw personally, but either way it tastes great!

Yelp
Burger, fries, onion rings, and the wings were fantastic! Loved the diner feel and the food came out fresh

Yelp
Slow/no service, seems like they have no process in place to handle orders. We ordered food and sat outside. They brought the drinks out but food never showed up. When I brought it to their attention it would have been a great time to offer an apology. None offered. They put our order in again and the food finally came out about an hour after we first ordered. Cheeseburger all the way was marginal but onion rings were good. This restaurant would fail quickly in any location other than PRSC.

Yelp
This was just an all around terrible experience. We came in 30 minutes before closing and the doors were locked While a few customer were finishing up inside. We only wanted a quick milkshake to go and the manager among other things was just blatantly disrespectful to us and her waitresses that were working. She was yelling at her waitresses to clean and do multiple things at once while she sat there on her phone, when we asked for a milkshake she said no because she cleaned the machine . If you put everything that I said aside the food is pretty good.

Roy W.

Yelp
I came in today at lunchtime. I have tried to eat several times. I sit at the bar and the waitress walk walked by me at least seven times. She did not acknowledge my presence I will continue to say that the food is decent, but the service is very bad.

Yelp
Pains me to write a negative review of a place that has been pretty good - and a place that's still local and not a chain - but just left after rude service from the staff. All booths were full so we said we would sit outside. We were handed menus and headed out. Never had any staff acknowledge us and was told after about 10 minutes that we couldn't order from outside.

Yelp
Great experience at Park Road Soda Shop today. Fantastic old Schiller hot dogs with quality service. Highly recommend.

Yelp
Great diner food and 50s vibe. Had the hot dog with onion rings. Both were awesome. I'll definitely go again.

Yelp
Went here for a work lunch with colleagues. I was expecting old timey soda shop - and that is exactly what I received! I ordered a chili cheese dog and a root beer float. LOVED the float, but wish it would have come in a real glass as opposed to styrofoam cup (a frosty glass is part of the appeal). The chili cheese dog was good, but basic. My coworker ordered fried pickles that we all shared and they were very tasty and crispy. He also ordered a double burger with onion rings - the burger was HUGE and I was very impressed with it! He shared his onion rings and I wish I had ordered my own! They were delicious! Personally, I think I should have ordered a burger.... and I recommend you do too! They have nice cozy seating and also a bar to sit at if you want to watch all the action. The service was quick and friendly.

Yelp
Really takes ya back, to the good ole days, service is always great, they make you feel like family.

Yelp
This place is definitely on point. Me and my lady decided to grab something late on Memorial day, about 30 minutes before closing. Because it was our first visit, as usual, I ordered a variety of items. The lady had the grilled chicken club sandwich. I had the foot-long hotdog all the way, the double cheeseburger and two orders of onion rings. We also had a slice of the lemon pound cake and the strawberry poundcake. I can safely say that if you are looking for really good, elevated fast food and sweets, this is your place. Will definitely be back again soon.

Yelp
I walked in tonight at 8:49 pm when they close at 9 pm. I asked if they wanted me to order "to go" since they were closing soon. The server said "No it's fine" and tried to secretly give her co-worker an eye roll which revealed how annoyed she was. As I ate my food another server mopped the floor right in front of me. I always tip well because I was a server in NYC for 3 years 25 years ago and know how important gratuities are in this line of work. I asked for a to-go box because the negative energy and the smell of cleaning solution from the mop swishing next to me ruined the taste of my meal and my dining experience. When I was leaving (at 9:04 pm) the door was locked and I asked if I needed to unlock the door to get out and she gave another eye roll when I stood there for her to open the door for me. I guess it bothered her to walk 6 feet to unlock the door for a paying customer. No thank you for a 4+ dollar tip on an 11 dollar bill. I probably would have given them more which is my usual. No smile. I even said thank you when I was leaving and I got NOTHING back. No utterance of a thank you came from either employee and my server didn't look up from the paperwork that had her so intensely engaged. Sometimes servers seem to forget that if customers don't come in they don't get paid and saying thank you is of the utmost importance. A good friend of mine and her family are the previous owners of the Charlotte Cafe and I used to go to the one in Arboretum frequently before we moved to the SouthPark area. Close to 18 years going there and never dissatisfied or disappointed as I was tonight. The current owner and my friend would be extremely disappointed. I have been a physician for almost 30 years now and these young girls need to learn that customer service, faking it and maybe even a smile will do wonders in whatever field you work in. If a patient of mine was ever treated in this way she would likely never return to my practice and I would fire any staff that treated someone the way I was treated tonight. Furthermore, I tried to call twice at around 8:40 pm to place a to-go order and no one answered. Another gentleman came in right after me and they turned him away. Regardless of my extremely negative review the food is delicious. Before my experience tonight I would have given 4 or 5 stars.

Yelp
First time at this place. Should have left after we arrived and saw how rude the staff was as soon as we walked in. My daughter walked up to the counter to ask a question and the girl didn't even look at her or answer her question. The place is cute but the staff make you feel so unwelcome and the food was just ok. The wait staff never even came back to check on our drinks or anything. Will definitely not come back! It's like they are intentionally rude!

Yelp
Food was tasty and a good place to take the kids for a burger or treat. Has a classic soda shop atmosphere.
google avatar

Joanne R.

Yelp
Wonderful environment! Good if wanting a classic oldies feel - very simple menu. Great grilled cheese!

Kay A.

Yelp
never got to try the food....was never greeted. Employees Did not acknowledge my husband and I for about 20 minutes so we decided to leave.
google avatar

Richard K.

Yelp
Went their today with a friend and ordered a sandwich. Twenty minutes later, my sandwich finally arrived. It was cold, too cold to eat so I returned it. I thought I would get another one. I waited until my friend finished his lunch. I never did get my sandwich. The waitress never came back to our table to ask if I wanted another one. I'm not sure what happened but this was the worst service I've ever had.
google avatar

Kirsten L.

Yelp
I got a double cheeseburger and fries. I was really disappointed in how small the fry portion was. What you see in the photo is how much they gave me before I touched them. The burger overall was good but it was simple. Not many toppings to choose from, but I did like it "all the way". Overall, it's very affordable but I'm not sure if I would come back here again.
google avatar

Christine C.

Yelp
Such a fun vibe in here and friendly, quick service. We ordered diner classics, burgers and onion rings, which were good. It seems to be a great community meeting spot- glad to have them in the neighborhood!

Yelp
Great food, great service, great price! Love coming here and really happy its walking distance!

Yelp
Popped into Park Road Soda Shoppe on a random Saturday afternoon for lunch and was pleasantly surprised at how much we enjoyed our lunch and also how busy it was! Friendly, fast service -- and the milkshakes were delicous!
google avatar

Shannon M.

Yelp
Took my mama here for lunch the other day. It was very good! Food was Delicious! I ordered the Chicken salad on rye with homemade Mac cheese, fried okra and tater tots. My mama had the Grill chicken club with fried okra, bake beans and chili. She kept saying how good everything was especially the chili. Staff was super friendly and helpful. Place was a bit small for a handicapped person. Hard to maneuver a wheelchair but other customers helped with the door. Only had one table to set if you are unable to walk much but luckily it was free. Place very busy. I can see why because of the food. They had some outside seating. May have to wait a bit. It worth it!
google avatar

Steve S.

Yelp
In normal times, this is one of my favorite restaurants, but servers not wearing masks correctly makes it where I won't go back until things get back to normal. One server was wearing her mask below her mouth while talking and standing above customers in a booth. The other server had her mask below her nose. I want to support local restaurants as much as I can, but I'm not going to take unnecessary safety risks to do so. Please wear your masks to cover your mouth and nose to protect yourself and your customers.

Yelp
Park Road Soda Shoppe brought me back to when I was a kid in New York, at the old diner (on a much smaller scale). I recently was in the area and was looking for a hot dog, being National Hot Dog Day, and remembered this spot. I arrived shortly before 12 and was greeted by a sweet server, so friendly. I looked over the menu and decided to go with the foot long, all the way, but on the side. Having never been I didn't know how their chili, Cole slaw was. So, until I I know I like to order on the side and add accordingly. The hot dog was good, but it was steamed and I prefer grilled. The chili however, on point. And, the crinkle fries were heaven. Fresh, steaming hot and salted just right. Park Road Soda Shoppe is a great place to enjoy an old school burger, hot dog, etc. and top the meal off with a milkshake.

Bob B.

Yelp
Excellent Carolina style burgers and hot dogs. Possibly the best ones in town. Fries and o-rings are good too. Nice staff.

Michelle E.

Yelp
Cute place but prices are high. Everything being ala carte is not a great idea. $4.59 chili cheese dog is a bit much
google avatar

Peter M.

Yelp
A nice throwback soda shop that resonates with the entire Park Road shopping center makeover. Large counter area with swiveling stools decked out in vibrant reds and chrome add a perfect touch to this quaint location. Their menu is pretty basic with the usual suspects, and pricing is modest but not cheap (neither is their rent, I'm sure). I'm usually there when I pick my granddaughter up from school so it's chicken fingers and hot dogs. Kids get a scoop of ice cream for only $.95 when ordering a meal. Nice. A couple of dings are for Styrofoam cups and plates along with plastic silverware. Not a fan. Give me the ol' mid-60's heavy stuff and I'm a happier person. Secondly, for the price, I think they could try a little harder. Of the entrees I've sampled, they seem frozen and reheated. I would ratchet up the quality and raise my prices to merit the effort. Why appeal to I-can-get-it-anywhere food while calling it family dining? This area will pay for quality (it's Myers Park for heavens sake). I'm also OK with the owners expressing their faith with a few discreet plaques. Or not. Who am I to judge?

Keith W.

Yelp
Wait staff is very racist and unprofessional food was good but the hospitality and wait staff is very selective on who they are willing to help and give good service to people of color will feel very unwelcom here
google avatar

Khemary S.

Yelp
My husband was ok his lunch break and wanted to eat here. He said they have fried okra so I was all in. I basically ordered a 3 veggie plate but also a chicken club sandwich. Look-- I know it's simply a sandwich but it was probably the best chicken sandwich I had in a long time. The chicken was tender and moist. I also added pimento cheese to it -- just say I ate the entire thing! Service was great. It was busy but we didn't wait long! Lemonade was tasty made a perfect Arnold Palmer! Great prices but I think they should tag on a few more $$ because they're on park road lol! Anyways must try when you're in the neighborhood!
google avatar

Kevin K.

Yelp
Okay the food was really good. I had a grilled turkey and cheese with... wait for it........tater tots they had this old school diner vibe and the prices were super cheap. You can also sit outside which is a bonus on a nice day!!
google avatar

Jacey M.

Yelp
Came here for lunch one day after it was highly recommended from a coworker of mine. He used to come here all the time when he worked closer to the area. The burgers were recommended but I really wanted a hot dog that day. So I ordered a hot dog with pimento cheese and fried pickles. Let me start with my fries pickles. The breeding to pickle ratio was perfect and the seasoning was yummy. The only thing was that they were extra greasy. But then again I ordered a fried item so greasiness means goodness. My hot dog on the other hand was disappointing... it tasted like they threw it in some boiling water to cook it and it was luke warm. I was thinking it was going to be cooked on a skillet or something, but it wasn't. So I would not recommend the hot dog at all. The people I was with said the burger was really good but they wished they had more because they left still feeling hungry. But you can get cheesy tots!! Didn't try them but sounds really good!! Prices were reasonable. About $6-$8 dollar meal. This is in the park road shopping center so parking is always packed. Very few seats (but a cozy diner feel) so if you definitely want a seat don't come at peak times!
google avatar

Jason L.

Yelp
Yes! Fun little place to take the kids or the grandparents or both! Hotdogs and fries were served piping hot, service was friendly and relatively inexpensive. Will come back to try a burger!
google avatar

Julie S.

Yelp
Came here for breakfast after getting my car worked on and the guys in the shop recommending it. Simple, small interior, but warm hospitality, good food and fair prices. My omelette was huge!!! And delicious. The staff knew the "regulars," which I always appreciate.
google avatar

Kevin L.

Yelp
First time here as I explore my new home city. This was a nice little place to come hang out. The soda was good, the onion rings were great, and the nostalgia factor of a 50s style diner was nice. Now, why not a 4 or 5? The burger was over cooked and dry. The staff had a chance to really work on me as a new customer, since I told them it was my first time here and asked for their recommendation, and I was at the counter, but that didn't happen. It wasn't really busy and the waitress that took my order was more interested in talking to someone that she already knew. I saw a lot of people ordering the hot dog, so I will come back again and give that a try, but a little bit of a missed opportunity here.
google avatar

Cyteria K.

Yelp
Absolutely love coming here for the food but most especially for the service. The young ladies who serve us are so caring, polite, and professional. They seem to take a special interest in their customers. They are particularly aware of their regular customers' needs and treat everyone well.

Jacob L.

Yelp
Everything was absolutely amazing. It is such a friendly place and I felt like I was home. Would definitely recommend the hamburger steak, chocolate malt shake, onion rings, and fried squash. Great service too!
google avatar

Stefi P.

Yelp
Casual sitting and awesome options for desserts , shakes and floats. Perfect place to visit on a sunny day. We were seated immediately and the order was taken really fast. Got the float really fast like in 2 mins of the order. The onion rings are good. Main focus this time was on the float.
google avatar

Abby L.

Yelp
This place is very tiny and cute. It definitely has an old soda shop feel....that black & white flooring..the soda shop bar...and booths. I came in one evening, only for dessert and there were a few customers around, but no wait. The menu had an array of sandwiches, hotdogs, fries, and onion rings. There are sundaes and milkshakes and various combinations of those items. I chose the hot fudge sundae and really enjoyed it. Plenty of hot fudge and whipped cream. The service was good. The waitress was fast and seemed to be an ideal multi-tasker. I was pleased with my visit.
google avatar

Melanie E.

Yelp
This is a good option if you're looking for a change of pace. It is a small soda shoppe, so seating is limited. They do carry-out orders. You pay at the register. Went for breakfast one day, but found they do not serve it all day. Lunch it is! Busy at the normal times. Energetic.
google avatar

Candyce B.

Yelp
*Dessert Review Only* I came in just for a some ice cream after dinner. The menu is simple and nostalgic...burgers, hot dogs, fries and milk shakes and ice cream sundaes. I ordered a hot fudge sundae. It really hit the spot. Not to mention it comes topped with whipped cream and a cherry. I left a happy girl! The service was good and the prices were reasonable!
google avatar

Maribel R.

Yelp
My mom and I came here for the first time about 2 weeks ago, the staff was friendly and the food wasn't bad. It's not what I was expecting but I would come again.

Hallie H.

Yelp
Old-school comfort food. The best grilled cheese sandwich in town. Perfect fries. The service is always terrific. My father used to work in a soda shop and coming in reminds me of him. Park Road shopping center has changed a lot over the years. I hope they are able to stay. Places like this are important.

Eric W.

Yelp
I absolutely love this little place! The vibe is a late '50s/early '60s soda shop. They have early rock and roll plus doo wop playing. I always find my mood brighter after being there for a few minutes...especially at night. A great place for all ages and generations. The food is consistently good. I always get the cheeseburger "all the way" (chili, slaw, onions & mustard). It's really good. I also love their lemon pound cake. They have a really good banana split too. The staff is always friendly and helpful. Plus it's basically the same staff since we started going a year ago. That says a lot about ownership & management AND the staff.

Mark T.

Yelp
Great food, reasonable prices, table service and friendly people. Why would anyone go to shake shack when you can go here?
google avatar

Timmy J.

Yelp
I love these nostalgic diners of course it has the 50's style complete with the checkered tile floor and mirrors. This restaurant is super clean and my breakfast was delicious! I had the Big John Biscuit the sandwich was so good. My wife had a pancake and not only was the size of the pancake very generous but the smell was just devine. Great food, great service, great restaurant!
google avatar

Victoria M.

Yelp
Literally the best place for a quick snack and cool vibes. I absolutely love the caramel sundae with walnuts and the service is so quick and the music tops it all off!
google avatar

Bruce M.

Yelp
Very convenient parking, good service, clean surroundings and appropriate pricing. Why only two stars? Your drink comes to you in a styrofoam cup, your meal arrives on a disposable plastic-like plate with plastic utensils. Forgetting for a moment the inelegance of this, consider the ecological ramifications of disposal dinnerware that will remain in the earth landfills forever. Over a period of time, the non-disintegrateable waste from this restaurant alone with fill tractor trailers, and could so easily be resolved by abandoning the use of disposable dishes for standard washable ones
