Parkhaus Hügel – Essen - a MICHELIN Guide Restaurant

"This smart little hotel is located in the ancestral seat of the Krupp family and overlooks the Baldeneysee lake. It offers numerous events venues but also – and above all – a restaurant serving ambitious cuisine that is fresh, tasty and seasonal. Afternoon coffee is served during the week." - Michelin Inspector

The ´Parkhaus Hügel´ restaurant in Essen, located above the Baldeneysee, is an excellent first-class restaurant with pleasant atmosphere, high quality of food and wine, friendly service and acceptable value for money. It’s my personal review, no fake.

Stayed there for a wedding. Beautiful location... Amazing views of the lake which is across the street from the hotel. The owner is personally involved and she and the staff take care of everything well. The hotel rooms are neat though small( we stayed in double bed room) and very comfortable. The restaurant where the wedding dinner was held had amazing views of the lake. It was beautiful to sit there and have the food which was delish as well. The hotel staff was courteous and tried their best to communicate in English . overall it was a good stay.

Average hotel, with the very high price, considering the offer. We pay 150 euro per night, and we have to pay 8 euros for a coffee that person on the front desk offer to us. Only good thing is small lake which is opposite hotel, where you can walk and relax. Toilet is like small wardrobe, even the door is like it , rooms is only for sleeping. It is clean and in general quiet if you are not at the front, because of the street which is very frequent. I will not go there not because of what I mentioned above, but because the staff or the owners I'm not sure, are acting like they are masters and not on your service, for which we pay.

It is very good located closed to train station and opposite of the lake with an amazing view. Our room was too small and there isnt any view from it, nr 13.||But, we like the location. The bathroom facilities are too small and not enough for 2 people, and they didnt renew it for the 2nd day

I enjoyed my stay here. Breakfast offers plenty of choice, including egg and bacon cooked to order. Fresh bread and rolls, choice of fresh fruits, cereals, juices and home made jams. Coffee and tea... milk. Cheeses, cold meats and fish.||Staff is usually friendly and helpful.||One issue though... ||On some evenings there were wedding parties which then prevented you from eating in the hotel restaurant. Same for bar services...

The hotel is beautfull and our room beautifull. The hotelstaff was very helpfull and helped us with our bags from the cycles to the room. Our stay at the hotel was very good. We didn't dine in the resaurant, because one of the waisters made a fuzz that we didn't had a reservation. So we went next door at Hugoloss of diner.

I chose this as a quiet overnight before a busy day at Messe Essen. It is the old Construction Managers' canteen from the building of the Krupp factory in the 1860's, about 5kms. south of the city. ||Beautiful views across the Balderneysee; forest behind; but a fairy busy road right in front.||A - rightly - renowned restaurant, that also does a very good breakfast. But I didn't get to try dinner, as arriving at 21h00 was ''too late'' for the kitchen.||My room - a single - was small, well-equipped, but looked out over the car-park.||Price, given the overall quality, was reasonable.||Overall: a worthwhile change from the usual dreary 'Chain Hotels' in Essen itself.

I grew up in Essen, Parkhaus Huegel was a firm favourite for Christmas lunches, family birthdays and annual dinner parties to eat goose which they cooked to perfection.||We had booked a table for Sunday lunch and we ordered goose. ||The meal was beautifully presented: slices of meat on a bed of red cabbage, small dumplings, tiny chestnuts, a stuffed apple accompanied by rich sauce. It looked delicious - unfortunately the food was luke warm (we were the first people to be served) and we sent it back. ||We waited for close to 10 minutes and our lunch arrived - admittedly, it was piping hot (as it should have been at the beginning) - but: instead of our nicely arranged slices of meat we were left with 4 slices of rather tough meat arranged in a small pile, the skin was charred, the apple was dry, the dumplings and the red cabbage were fine (but I assume it is difficult to make a mess of dumplings and cabbage). ||I was appalled that a professional chef would allow such a sorry mess to leave his kitchen.||The waitress asked whether the food was alright, I told her that it had been very disappointing and we asked for the bill - we just wanted to leave.||The bill was presented and we were asked whether we would like a coffee - I am not sure whether that was meant to be an apology for our lunch. We declined and left and I have a strange feeling that we shall not return. It used to be a lovely restaurant - based on today's experience it is living off its reputation.

Yelp
I came here on a Monday when yelp page says it opens at 12. But they close on Mondays and Tuesdays. I told the staff not to worry since I'm here to do some research at Villa Hugel. The lady with a baby graciously said, "I can offer you a cold drink."We take a white wine and an OJ. The location is pretty remote. It used to be Krupp canteen, at the foothill of Villa Hugel, looking out to Ruhr/Baldeneysee. But the street separating the water and the restaurant is rather busy and noisy. Back up the hill, is the S6 train which isn't too noisy and infrequent, compares to the cars and trucks on the road. It's the history that brought me here but I find their service is subpar. As I'm writing this review, I checked again for their business hours. And it has NOT changed to reflect their closings on Monday and Tuesday. This, is really NOT cool.
