Parkway is my favorite bar in Tacoma.
It's pretty hipster, but the servers are always exceptionally welcoming and often make a point to remember your name while you're there. It always feels like you're at a friend's house for a big party, and make no mistake, this is a well-attended party. We've always been fortunate enough to score seats without too much waiting, but think twice before going on a weekend.
The walls are lined with photos of Tacoma's history, and the rafters are lined with draft pulls. It's a cool space, walking a very approachable line between dive bar and classy lounge.
Behind the bar you'll find one of the largest selection of beers in Tacoma, from local and seasonal specials to tried-and-true favorites. The bartenders are ready to offer samples so you can experiment without regretting your pours.
Food highlights include their mushroom-swiss burger and their teriyaki burger. Their meat is wonderfully seasoned, making them among the best burgers in Tacoma. But instead of fries they serve bagged chips. Delicious burgers marred by lackluster sides.
EDIT: Apparently they have fries now! They serve garlic, pesto, or chili waffle fries as a separate side -- they don't come with the burgers or sandwiches. We got the chili cheese fries and they were...alright.
This used to be the only place in Tacoma where you could find Mac n Jack's Serengeti Wheat beer, one of my favorites, but they haven't had it the last three times I've visited.
Whether you're a local or a tourist, if you're in Tacoma, Parkway and Top of Tacoma are the two bars you need to visit.
