What to Do in Mérida, Mexico in the Yucatán

"In the early evening I headed to Parque Francisco Canton, where a 10‑piece local band plays in the open square while older couples dance; I grabbed a marquesita — a crispy, salty‑sweet rolled crepe made with shredded gouda — and enjoyed it while soaking up the fading light." - Scarlett Lindeman Scarlett Lindeman Scarlett Lindeman is a chef, writer, and researcher based in Mexico City, Her work covers Mexican cuisine, foodways, and culture. We were given half an hour by our tour guide to spend here but it wasn’t enough! This park is right in front of a beautiful catholic church. There are many food vendors inside. We tried esquites, churros and marquesitas, and they were all delicious. We visited right around sunset and I was pleasantly surprised by how loud the birds were chirping there.

Parque Principal Francisco Cantón has a charm that instantly took me back to the small towns of Colombia. The surroundings are beautiful, full of color and life, and the park feels like the heart of the community. We ate fresh fruit from street vendors, and the kids discovered marquesitas, which are basically rolled crepes filled with whatever sweet magic you choose. They’re a must try while you’re here. As we walked through the park, we saw dancers, musicians, and street performers bringing the space to life. The whole scene had this relaxed, joyful energy that made it easy to just slow down and enjoy being there. Our kids ran around, ate nonstop, and made new friends without hesitation. It is the kind of place where you can sit on a bench, watch life happen around you, and feel connected to the city in a very real way.

The lively heart of Valladolid! Parque Principal Francisco Cantón Rosado is a beautiful and vibrant town square surrounded by colonial architecture, local shops, and restaurants. It’s the perfect place to relax under the shade, people-watch, or enjoy some street food — especially marquesitas or churros from local vendors. The stunning San Servacio Church stands right across the square, making it a great photo spot both day and night. A must-visit to feel the local culture and charm of Valladolid!

Well designed park! There a food market on each end each with about 20 different food stalls (although 1 end is currently closed), a large viewing pond, and a sky walk. There is also 2 outdoor workout areas, multiple kids playgrounds and interactive water system, and a dog park.

There is a lot that happens in the town center at night. If you look like a foreigner they will yell and try to get you to buy their products. They are very kind here. Great shopping area. They have a little cafeteria across the street. The Church seemed to always have something going on here too.

Very beautiful little town, wish I had more time to explore but we didn't have long. The church is absolutely amazing!

A gallery house where you will find an incredible variety of art objects and furniture. Contemporary art, urban culture, objects showing the fusion of Catholic civilization with that of the Mayans. The diversity is in the colors, shapes and means of expression. If you are a newcomer to this country like us, you can expect a congestion of the senses from all the diversity. The guides are very good and will take you on this short journey with great skill and a sense of humor.
