13 Houston Restaurants Serving Stellar Central and South American Cuisine | Eater Houston

"Hidden in a Bissonnet strip center, this restaurant prepares traditional Colombian dishes, plus some Latin American fusion. The bandeja paisa, one of the most popular meals in Colombia, is served here, complete with the essential elements of chicharron, beef, fried egg, beans, arepa, rice, plantains, chorizo, and sausage. If this isn’t hearty enough, a side of empanadas with Mexican-style hot sauce will be sure to fill any remaining stomach space. Spanish paella, and churrasco are among the not-strictly-Colombian, but Latin American dishes that the restaurant offers." - Christina Autry

Google
Such a welcoming restaurant with excellent service. The staff was friendly and attentive, and the owner came to our table and chatted with us. My husband and I both had the Bandeja Paisa and Empanadas, which were so filling and delicious. This is a wonderful place to enjoy authentic Colombian food and hospitality. I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to try something different and delicious. 🇨🇴

Google
I should’ve posted my play before, but I couldn’t wait because I was so hungry. Everything was so delicious. The empanadas were delicious. Services is great! Must come and see this place and eat delicious food Adreana was very helpful waiter.

Google
This place made me cry, I haven't tried Colombian food that actually tastes as Colombia ever before. The service is friendly and reminds me of the traditional plazas. The ajiaco is the best one I have tried in all US so far. The juices also taste like the ones my granny makes. Everyone that wants to see how real Colombian food would taste should come here!

Google
Best empanadas in the Houston area, I dare you to compare them even with Mi Pueblito. We had, besides empanadas we had mondongo, Sancocho, and bandeja paisa, all delicious and very reasonable priced. Oh, I almost forgot, the natural juices are great and very generously sized.

Google
Very good and authentic food. Also very cheap, you’ll definitely get your moneys worth. Staff is nice and patient, food is served speedy. Definitely recommend

Google
I went over this weekend for their huge empanada and I wasn’t disappointed. It was big enough for two ppl. Their chicharrón and tostones were also yummy. The place was clean and service was good. I will definitely come back for more.

Google
Pan de bono is amazing here. The service is great and very attentive. We were greeted with a warm welcome. I came here for brunch but they had a breakfast menu that they only served until 11 and it was 12. Of course, I wanted the plate from the breakfast menu but settled for something else. We ordered empanadas and pan de bono to start. My boyfriend had the bandeja paisa and the chicharrón was a bit over cooked and hard to bite into. I ordered the patacón con carne (very tasty) and arepas con queso with an egg on the side. One thing I don’t like is that they don’t offer complimentary water.

Google
I haven’t had Colombian buñuelos in a long time, but i remember them being really good. I tried the buñuelos here and they were a huge let down. I spend almost 20 dollars on five buñuelos, that to me were very expensive and not worth it at all. Don’t get you’re buñuelos here!

Yelp
The food here was insanely delicious, unique and authentic. The decor is bare bones and the sign outside was hard to see but those things are minute. We are here for the food and the food is bomb. Great prices too. It's giving economical luxury. The wait staff were super friendly and played peekaboo with my daughter which was too cute. Great little spot!

Yelp
We had a great experience at Parilla Colombiana. Food is delicious and generous with a reasonable price. We ordered the Bandeja Paisa, the beef soup and Empanada. Service is extraordinary. Valeri was so friendly. Her professionalism adds an extra layer of satisfaction to our meal. :) Highly recommend this place!

Raul C.

Yelp
Love the food here! Especially the Bandeja Paisa. We receive excellent service each time we come here.

Yelp
Cute and authentic place for Columbian food ! The empanadas were so amazing ! They had a great crunch to them and were pipping hot on the inside (which we love -- fresh to order !) The plantains were delicious as well, it wasn't overly sweet, which was nice ! The owners were also so sweet, definitely recommend checking this spot out !

Yelp
Good service and atmosphere but unfortunately the food was not up to par. The portions of the proteins are small and yet they demand just as much if not more than their competitors. A meal was north of $17 and when you can pay the same at one of their competitors and actually leave satisfied it's just not worth it. The steak was overly salted and very small and the empanadas were too crunchy to enjoy fully. I'd eat here again but if the price went down.

Daniel M.

Yelp
We came here for the first time for lunch. Service was excellent and very attentive. The ambience was what of what you'd expect from a small mom and pop restaurant with a basic dining area, and it was clean and uncluttered. The menu is quite extensive, and there were a number of great choices. Our group had an empanada, a Colombian hot dog, and salchipapas, all of which were excellent. The Bandeja paisa was also good, but the steak and sausage were a bit on the drier side. Prices were a little higher than one would expect, but not outrageously so. Overall, it was a nice dining experience, and I'd be happy to come back again to try some of their other dishes.

Yelp
Decent mom/pop Colombian Resturant. Food was very tasty, staff was very friendly. Maybe I came after the lunch rush wasn't too busy. Definitely will try again.

Yelp

google avatar

JP R.

Yelp
One of our favorite Colombian restaurants in Houston. Not the fanciest or the most extensive menu but just great food and super friendly service. The empanadas and buñuelos are must tries here. The small bandeja paisa is the perfect size. Usually very clean dining space.

Yelp
Possibly the best chicharrón I have ever had. It was incredible. Also had freshly made buñuelos that took me back to Bogota when I first tried a fresh buñuelo almost 30 years ago. We also had empanadas (great), bandeja paisa (wonderful), yucca frita (always delicious) and brevas con arequipe y queso (one of my all time favorites). Waiting and kitchen staff was kind and efficient. Made us feel at home. Gracias.

Roberto M.

Yelp
Great Colombian food and service. All our Colombian favorites including some bakery items. Loved the Bandeja Paisa.. of course !

Elexia D.

Yelp
The food and the staff were absolutely amazing the food was delicious I definitely recommend if you are craving Colombian food!!

Yelp
GREAT food and AWESOME customer service. :) Small restaurant very cozy and clean. Empanadas and the fresh squeezed lemonade was so refreshing I had to order a 32 oz to go. Highly recommend this cozy restaurant.

Leudis L.

Yelp

Laura C.

Yelp
Authentic Colombian food with flavors that will make you think your really in Colombia! The buñuelos are the best I've had in houston, and I've tried so many places, nothing beats thses
google avatar

Nicole M.

Yelp
The food was great! Got my small size bandeja paisa with a side of tostones and yuca frita plus mayoketchu which I learned Colombian's call salsa rosada. PLUS had jugo de parcha (de agua) and it was soooo good! Definitely want to bring my small kiddos here to enjoy the food.
google avatar

Patricia N.

Yelp
My Churrasco was good, but the sides were not. A plate that delicious should have better sides than just rice and raw French fries. The waitress barely paid attention to us.

Carola M.

Yelp
I couldn't wait to check into this place so I could write my review. All I can tell you about this place is that this is the best Colombian Restaurant in Houston. I have written reviews on different Colombian restaurants and I have said that they are all good, but this place is home sweet home. It has all the usual dishes bandeja paisa, la mojarra, buñelos, empanadas, and soups. Yes colombian food is good, but the difference between this place and all the other colombian restaurants is that the food here is exactly made like in Colombia. The area is not nice and this place is a little hole in the wall place but it is very well worth it by coming here and trying it out. You will not regret it!

Alejandra M.

Yelp
WOW JUST WOW. Nothing but good things to say about this restaurant. Hands down one of the best meals I've had in a long time. We got some Bandejitas and they were just delicious. The chicharron was very good, the rice was well cooked and the overall taste was amazing. Thank you for keeping the Colombian culture so high with this quality meals. One more thing to mention is the staff ; they are very hard working people and very nice. GRACIAS!

Yelp
I just had 2 empanadas (1.50 each) and they were amazing, what is even more amazing was the salsa concoction. Also fresh limes on the side ......I am stuffed. The name has changed I believe, same location in a strip mall though. Very clean and very nice staff. When you are there check out MARU grocery next door for the best Ethiopian store in Houston. FRESH INJERA!

Yelp
Food was delicious, fast service and fresh . New manager lady was friendly and kind. Fresh Mora Juice it's a must.

Yelp
Great food! Best empanadas in Houston! Great service and nice people. Definitely will be back!

Yelp
I found this place here on Yelp and love it Great food, atmosphere and it is a small business. Friendly employees i come often!

Victor C.

Yelp
If you are really hungry and you love been and pork and sausage then get the bandeja paisa. You can't go wrong with that . The pork belly is off the chain and I love their maracuya drink. So refreshing and delicious . Oh don't forget their empanadas really good too

Angie R.

Yelp
Foodie at heart! Always looking to try different Cusine from all over Latin America. This little hidden Columbian jewel is a must try! My tastebuds were definitely woken. Tried a little bit of everything Patacón con queso, Arepa con Carne, Empanadas and Cazuela de Mariscos definitely my favorite. The young lady who attended us was very friendly and attentive. If you're around the Houston area a must try. You'll definitely come back for more. Props to the chef!
google avatar

Maricella C.

Yelp
I tried the sancocho de cola and arepas de chorizo! All of it was great!!! Everyone loved their plates! Casual place. Hidden gem.
google avatar

Carol H.

Yelp
When Mi pueblito gets too loud, this place will remind you of home. Que viva Colombia!
google avatar

Yelp
50 minutes to receive my food! And the prices are OUTRAGEOUS! I went during a World Cup game where Colombian was playing and they "Didn't have any tables" yet they had people there just watching the game, not eating, just watching the game. I had to order my food To Go and waiting in my car, while I was in my car I saw people taking 12packs of beer into the establishment and when I went inside, one of the 4 times, to check if my food was ready, I observed one of the lady's that worked there pouring beer into a white cup which they use for their normal drinks. Will NOT be coming back to this place, I'll stick to La Fogata Colombian Restaurant, I was just trying to find a different Colombian restaurant that would be closer to me but I guess I'll make the drive.
google avatar

Carol A.

Yelp
Deli!!! The mora juice in milk was really good and the bandejita. This place is near our job we Will definitely be coming back soon.

Eric F.

Yelp
Love this place, great empanadas and Steaks! The people are so nice there! I tell everyone about this place!

Yelp
I hold mixed feelings for Tierras Colombianas. On one hand, they offer a number of items that are delicious and authentically prepared; on the other hand, they also serve some items that just don't satisfy a hardcore hankering for Colombian food. The good: - empanadas - toston con pollo (large crispy, fried green plantain topped with chicken and hogao) - avena drink (it's like a cold oatmeal smoothie. It is DELICIOUS here.) - tostones con chicharron (fried green plantains with fried pork belly) The bad: - sancocho The sancocho soup here is prepared very lazily. The cooks don't slice the green plantain, they don't provide the yucca in small pieces... they literally serve you a bowl of broth with all of the meat, vegetables, and starches plopped in huge chunks in the center. The sancocho at Tierras Colombianas is a broth jacuzzi for your solid food. I'll keep coming back solely for the avena and toston appetizers.

Yelp
DELICIOUS! So this is a hole in the wall type restaurant but the food tastes homemade and fresh. I had the Bandeja Paisa (Typical Colombian Plate) and Sancocho de Gallina (Hen Soup) and it was excellent. Service was pretty good as well. I will be returning here as I was quite satisfied with my visit.

Yelp
Delicious food. I do recommend to anybody in town to try this excellent Colombian food. Arepas, Patacones and Empanadas really yummy
google avatar

Steven W.

Yelp
We live not far from this strip mall, which is a treasure house of little gems. This place doesn't look like much from outside. But it is really really good. Worth a trip. We had low-key friendly service, and excellent homemade mango "shakes" with water, the bit of everything platter and the chicken and rice. Doesn't remotely resemble Mexican food except for the presence of beans and rice. Fried plantains were sweet and not greasy; "pork rinds" and sausage and thin steak were rich and delectable; great beans, poached egg on the rice....very satisfying. The chicken and rice was shredded chicken mixed with soft rice and vegetables turned out of a bowl - sort of a casserole - yummy. Not a greasy spoon - they know what they're doing - and a welcome relief from cheesy Tex-Mex.

Yelp
Excellent Colombian food, great taste and always fresh. The customer service is wonderful, they are very polite and courteous, definitely recommended.

Yelp
Terrible food. We ordered our food and when it arrived to the table I was missing everything. My steak came, I had to ask for my rice, chicharron, beans and eggs for what was included within my Bandeja Paisa that I ordered. The waitress even disputes us on the charges because we challenged the bill as she charged everything separately for what was included within the meal. It didn't taste good either. When we walked in we weren't even seated we had to sit ourselves down after waiting. The owner eventually compromised and addressed the situation. The wait for the food was lengthy as well.
google avatar

Mitch A.

Yelp
Food is above average and staff is very friendly. Overall very good for its price. If it gets crowded you night have to wait a bit long though. Overall three stars.
google avatar

carlos c.

Yelp
My favorite Colombian restaurants in the whole city of Houston. The owner is one sweetest person you ever meet. The place small but food reminds me when I visited Medellin.
google avatar

Russell A.

Yelp
The best lunch special at $5.99. Always prepared fresh and accompanied with a delicious bowl of soup of the day. I always feel like I've had something healthy to eat. The staff are friendly and attentive. One of my favorite lunch spots!!!
google avatar

Chef T.

Yelp
The waitress recommended the empanadas and these were tasty. Exterior was crisp and yellow with a hot inside comprised of potato and beef. The winner was the pork arepa which was really a deep fried piece of pork although the areas could've used more seasoning. Mango smoothie was decent, the salsa she brought out was excellent. The Patacon pollo was really huge for the price but after several bites I felt it was too salty.
google avatar

Kepa P.

Yelp
This place has great food! They have lunch specials from Monday to Friday that include soup and main dish and different option each day. Everything I have tried here is yummy, although the place is a little small and hidden in the middle of nowehere.

JC1zle ..

Yelp
The food was too expensive for the portions, as well as the presentation, (cups, instead of glasses.)The service was terrible, to the point we had to set aside our own dishes, & waited really long for the waitress to ask if we wanted something else to drink, (she was too busy sitting down, we might interrupt her social time.) our waitress was so busy on her phone, she couldn't bring us her check. Bottom line, don't waste your money, there are better places!!!!!
google avatar

Bridget M.

Yelp
The food was unique and delicious! Be sure to add their homemade salsa to everything!
google avatar

Joe R.

Yelp
Great Authentic Colombian Food. Menu is easy to read for anyone. Descriptions in both Spanish and English. I always leave full with out breaking the bank. Super friendly staff.
google avatar

Nils S.

Yelp
The best Colombian restaurant in town! Everybody is so friendly and makes you feel like you're eating at a Colombian house. Try their steak and Arroz con Pollo! Very delicious.
