How Travelers Turn Food Souvenirs Into a Vacation-Inspired Dinner Party | Eater

"A Balkan specialty grocery in Queens that travelers use to source authentic ingredients and souvenirs for home-cooked regional meals. Staff who are from the region can offer practical advice—one salesperson from Romania discussed stuffed cabbage and recommended a preferred brand of ajvar—making it a helpful stop for assembling dishes like borek, ajvar, and other pantry items tied to Balkan cooking traditions." - Devra Ferst

On the Grid : Parrots Coffee

"Balkan & Mediterranean grocery with imported goods and hot dishes. Refillable olive oils and vinegars and plenty of foods you can bag up and pay by the pound. Great spot to stock up on your basics." - Young Jerks

most recent story: i bought a big jar of acacia honey, opened it, tasted, and found out that it’s 80%, and maybe 20% of actual honey added (my uncle is a beekeeper, i know what i'm talking about). i brought it back, they refused to take it coz it’s open. the same happened to my mom, who found mold in their sour cream, no return coz it’s open. how the hell are we supposed to know you sold us fake or spoiled product without opening it?? or how do you expect us to use it? for us it’s not just the shelf decoration, it’s the actual food. every once in a while they sell spoiled or bad produce, and refuse to take the responsibility. they have lots of really great products too, that’s what makes us come back. but every story like this is a fly in the ointment.

Excellent variety of spices, teas and dried goods. Friendly staff. They also have prepared foods as well and have a wide variety of packaged foods. Love this place.

Gotta love this store! The selection of Europen foods does it for me.

Their favorite thing is to sell cheese with an old moldy edge. Any normal shop would cut this part away. Hear the stuff yells back at you if you ask to replace. Because "that's how it comes".

Lot of items is overpriced up to 15-20 percent than in other stores … and on top of that they are cheap to give customers plastic bag for buying items… you need to buy bag or they ofer you some small plastig bag that you can’t put 2 lemon inside …. Big turn off

Can’t give more than 3 stars because of some of the home made dishes that seem to be expensive and a fraud.. sorry but that’s a fact.. don’t buy piftie here. It’s not made as it’s supposed to.. they throw gelatin packs in it with boiled meat.. that’s not how you make that dish… also the cabanoși aren’t fresh. You can see the fresh in the display but you get the dried out old ones.

They have a lot of products from Eastern Europe that cannot be found anywhere else. I like this place a lot, but was disappointed at their baking section products last time. It was not fresh at all.

An absolute gem. Best coffee by the pound, incredible selection of olives, cheeses & sweets. Love the spinach pie too!
