Yelp
I spent a full year at Parsley and then discontinued the service. They did not fix me, and yet I cannot say enough about my healthcare team. I researched Parsley on Yelp before joining and some of the negative reviews I read put me on edge, I'll cover many of them below and I hope my experience will help you make your own decision.
I came to Parsley with a severe case of Leaky Gut / SIBO. I literally could not put anything in my mouth without having a systemic reaction. I simultaneously saw top GI specialists Dr. Basseri and Dr. Pichetshote at Cedars-Sinai and Dr. Lisa Lin at UCLA. After a year of working with all of these doctors, I have gotten somewhat better but am still very much on my healthcare journey and am now working with Chris Kresser - a notable functional health practitioner.
I came to Parsley with a deep distrust in doctors based on many failed treatments. It took me a great deal of time to trust the professionals at Parsley, but I have had so many good interactions with these health care professionals that they truly did earn my trust. Living with a chronic condition can - in itself - be a traumatic and character-defining experience. There is no one Earth that can really understand what I've been through, but the folks at Parsley have come close. They've been incredible emotionally supportive, they've celebrated my victories, and they've held my hand through a very difficult time. They helped me realize that I've been my own GODDAMN HERO in taking care of myself, but they've been my champions and supporters the entire way.
Dr. Jacklyn Tolentino clearly and patiently explained every lab result in great detail. When I had follow up questions immediately after the appointment, she always had clear answers for me. She conferred with other doctors in her network about my strange bevy of symptoms, really communicated with my whole Parsley team, and did her best to confer with all of my other doctors. She really cared about me.
Erica Zellner, health coach, was just a charm to work with. Sincere, forthright, no bull-shit, patient, and caring. I always found her advice insightful. She took the time to get to know me as a person and not just a patient. I always looked forward to our conversations and - tbh - I'm pretty bummed I won't be seeing her anymore.
Annie Shaltz, nurse practitioner, earned her place in heaven for putting up with all of my emails. She's patient and kind. Annie's the kind of person that - because she exists - she makes you feel better about humanity in general. The dozens of emails I've exchanged with her are where I know I got far more than my money's worth with Parsley Health. Thank you Annie. I'll miss you most of all Scarecrow.
Even the staff phlebotomist made blood draws a pleasurable experience.
Now that I've covered everything about Parsley Health that I love, I'm going to cover some of the many concerns I have had to add some balance to this post.
First, getting care through Parsley Health isn't cheap. In addition to the monthly fee, you'll have initial testing and repeat testing and this will run in the thousands of dollars. You'll likely be prescribed many supplements without really taking your budget constraints into consideration. Their lobby is super plush, but it made me feel that middle-class workers like myself were not their target demographic. I know this was my own belief that I brought to the table.
Second, they will require you to get lab work from BioReference Labs and then tell you not to pay the bill after insurance pays out. They told me that BioReference writes off uncollected debt and it never goes to collection. While this business practice seems shady, I have so far found it to be true.
Third, from my research I suspect Parsley Health makes a profit off of supplements they prescribe through the Fullscript website. Now this is an inherent conflict of interest that I am definitely not okay with, but in my limited experience it also does not seem to be outside the norm for functional medicine.
Fourth, sometimes I felt like I was getting all my calories from supplements. That's an exaggeration, but supplement management took a lot of time, money, and in the end did not fix me. However, many supplements probably helped with my general health considering my body was constantly stressed from chronic inflammation.
Fifth, getting an appointment within a month was sometimes a challenge. Hopefully they've corrected for this by now, but on the other hand, when I stated my necessity, Annie and Dr. T really did everything they could to find me an appt.
Your mileage will of course vary. I was a special case for the Parsley Team, and they have expressed as much. I wouldn't walk in expecting them to take over your responsibility for your own health. I had a very good experience and positive relationships but these took time to build. I would absolutely use Parsley again for general healthcare in the future if my budget allows.
