Day Trips in Mexico City

"This national park will put you in the middle of two of Mexico’s highest peaks: Popocatépetl and Iztaccíhuatl. Popocatépetl has been active since the mid-’90s, and the park’s main parking lot is the closest you can get to this mountain. Don’t worry, the view from here is still impressive. Iztaccíhuatl is not active, and it’s a popular climb among mountaineers, but you can also hike along one of several routes that roam around the volcano. El Paso is an hour drive from Mexico City and can only be reached by car. There are camping areas around Iztaccíhuatl, but you’ll have to come prepared with all-season tents and some good sleeping bags if you plan to stay overnight." - MATADOR_NETWORK

Beautiful place- worth the admittedly fraught drive from Puebla. A place for hiking and enjoying the insane views of the two volcanoes. There are toilets and food there too so no need to worry about peeing in a bush

Even if you are not climbing either of the volcanos, this is still a very good place to view them and take pictures. There are also some small food stalls.

Apart from being a great park, with fresh air and nature all around, an active Volcano and trails to go up to a sleeping volcano, this is place is Mexican heritage all over. It doesn't matter where you are from, the mysticism of the park makes you forget of the caotic city an hour away. It is also strange that this park is the way Spanish got to Tenochtitlan and conquered it, modern Mexico is defined at this place.
