Where to Eat and Drink in Lancaster, Pennsylvania | Eater Philly

"It's a minimal roastery and coffee bar with a tight menu of drinks made from sustainably sourced beans and teas; the newly opened Passenger Coffee & Tea Showroom is the perfect place to duck in for an early-morning macchiato, Passenger Coffee is currently takeout only, and you can purchase their selection of beans and tea blends at the showroom." - Caroline Coral

"I always go to Passenger Coffee, which is near the farmers’ market. It’s not Amish, but it is obviously Amish-inspired: beautiful, sophisticated, simple, and they make delicious coffee."

Every time we have gone the coffee is amazing and the service is great. They are very consistent, I feel confident that every barista here will make their drinks with care and precision. My girlfriend and I love coming here all the way from Jonestown each weekend. They really respect the craft and the passion is obvious from the moment you walk in. The store is beautiful, menu is curated, and the baristas are knowledgeable. I believe it’s Jay but the tall barista who was wearing a beanie working on Sunday is always helpful and gives great suggestions. It’s all in the little things at this place and it elevates above the rest. Thank you for reminding me why I love coffee so much

Google
Petite cafe serving good coffee in a beautiful space. Service was top notch! The girl at the counter was so welcoming and kind; she started the experience very pleasantly! Interior is gorgeous!! Coffee was a little sour to our taste but still very good on aroma and presentation. Awesome experience overall. Will be back!!

Google
This is the most elevated, sophisticated, and out right experiential coffee shop I have ever visited. I would consider it closer to the MoMA than a Starbucks or commodity coffee spot. They had multiple selections of drip, espresso, and pour over (they actually had a ton of pour over options ranging from great to excellent), the baristas were very kind and professional, extremely dedicated to their craft and were clearly invested in stewarding the coffee to the consumer well. They have an emphasis on presentation, quality, and experience. They are true to themselves and want you to enjoy their coffee through their vision. Think of this spot as “chef curated” and not “build your own”, just thrust them to deliver a stellar product and they will! I wish I lived in the area so that I could come back here all the time!!

Google
Everyone is so friendly. I love the pastry selection and the matcha is really good. The menu is limited but what they have is done well with excellent quality. Beware it can get quite busy on the Central Market days.

Google
Loved the service and friendliness of the baristas. The food and drinks were very good. We got a blueberry poptart to share- absolutely delicious- would highly recommend! My latte was quite wonderful, and the coffee was perfectly brewed.

Google
Cute little shop with friendly staff. The menu is simple, but well done. I can tell they use high quality matcha

Google
I felt like a VIP coming here. The service was phenomenal and they left an amazing first impression. I was greeted, given great information about the coffee, and was offered a shot on the house. The pour over I got was single origin and $6 for about 8 oz of coffee. It will be listed as one of my favorite coffee shops in Lancaster on my coffee shops of Lancaster list!

Google
Don’t come here expecting flavored syrups and sugary cold foams — but DO expect to be impressed. I love a maple brown sugar shaken espresso with cold foam more than anything AND YET a basic iced coffee from here was so delicious I didn’t even add sugar to it. I was happy to drink it black! My fiance loved his espresso shot and said it was the best he ever had. Staff was patient and nice when answering my questions and the cafe’s design and interior was gorgeous. It’s pretentious (in a good way) and incredibly simple. Put your trust in the staff and give it a try, even if you’re a skeptic like me! Also note its sign is pretty easy to miss! Keep an eye out

Yelp
Really cute cafe! Closest things I've seen in Philly/PA to LA and NY vibes. The workers are very kind! There was an Asian girl who helped me... and since I'm pregnant I asked her how much caffeine was in the matcha. While she wasn't sure the exact mg she knew down to the grams of how much matcha powder they used down to the ml of milk. I really appreciated her explanation and cheerful help! The matcha was delicious! Strong creamy cup! I think the best I've had in PA! Too bad it's far away... or I guess that's good for my wallet and baby haha.

Yelp
A cute spot that takes their drinks very seriously! We wandered in here and were impressed by their extensive drink selection and thorough descriptions. We tried the matcha lattes and a specialty coffee, all of which were good. It's worth noting that many of the drinks are dine in only, but they have very limited seating, which doesn't make a ton of sense to me. However, if you're okay squishing into half a table next to strangers, it's not too bad. One of the baristas also spilled some of one of drink while bringing it over and didn't replace it which was a little strange, but they were all very nice (just semi unaware)

Yelp
Absolutely delicious coffee, cronut was a must get! We also tried the homemade cherry vanilla pop tart and it was unreal! The service was quick, friendly staff and the atmosphere was cozy.

Yelp
It was good. Wouldn't say it was the best coffee I've had. But staff were very nice in explaining the different coffees. And it was an aesthetic and cozy interior.

Yelp
Caring staff crafting drinks the way you like it. I had a hot matcha Ogura something and a hot Cusco pourover Fancy blueberry pastry and lemon cookie. Fresh goodness. Lancaster is lucky to have a coffee place with fresh flavorful pastries and has foreign coffee options.

Yelp
Stopped in for a cop of coffee and loved the look of this space. I ended un purchasing a bag which came with a complementary cup of coffee. It was so delicious. I got a pop tart to much on and it was perfect. The server was super kind and helpful-highly recommend this shop
google avatar

Asha S.

Yelp
I am the biggest coffee snob and at this point after all the education and cupping I've done I feel like I've experienced it all. What an incredible gem. The coffee is just out of the world. I wouldn't drink anything else if you love coffee this is your only stop

Yelp
Was visiting Lancaster early in the morning and this was one of the only places open at 7 am for coffee. We felt lucky as this place is open, airy, beautiful, and upscale. The pastries were delicious - we got a morning bun and a blueberry scone and neither disappointed. The baristas were very warm and inviting. Definitely will make this a spot to stop by in the future! Also, lots of outlets and strong WiFi for anyone in need of a spot to work!

Yelp
Great coffee, very knowledgeable staff The space is a little small but it's in the city so it's expected Must visit if you want coffee
google avatar

Amber L.

Yelp
A no frills coffee shop with straight up delicious beans and quality coffee. Don't expect syrups and sprinkles, expect flavorful coffee prepared by friendly staff in a chill environment.

Josiah L.

Yelp
This is the establishment for the enthusiast. I was pleased to find two espresso varieties and pour over options. The staff are professional and eager to discuss and answer questions. Small shop, but clean and tasteful.

Yelp
I am a coffee person and I love cafe - hopping. Either I come to enjoy the ambiance or work or read a book. Sadly, this place has no wifi. I love their coffee beans tho! Aesthetic place. Service is a bit slow, I guess because the baristas need to handle registry and making drinks. Food-wise, good choice of pastry. However, I would appreciate more if they would warm up the pastry or if it is an option.

Yelp
Really enjoyed trying out Passenger Coffee. Based off of the already wonderful reputation of this coffee place, we figured we definitely needed to give it a try while in town. We really enjoyed how simple and minimalist the menu and the place was. There were all the essential coffees and teas, but the way the barista made it was very carefully and well done. He made small talk and was one of the most kind and gentle people I've met in a while. It was clean and just had a very relaxed vibe, and the latte and cold brew were delicious. Highly recommend!

Yelp
Two words: nitro tea!!! This place has it all, from a calming, vibey place to hand to delicious pastries and endless drink options. If you're into super high quality single origin coffee, they've got that, and it's not overpriced, either. The baristas are so kind and it was even welcome to bring two crazy toddlers in there with us. They have nitro coffee of course but the nitro tea I was not expecting! It was so smooth and delicious. It was worth the extra stop and bizarre on street non-functioning meters in downtown Lancaster on our way to take the kids to Dutch Wonderland.

lajollan x.

Yelp
Pretentious staff that are unkind and unwilling to help. They do foolish things like print a rotating menu that lends to questions but their staff don't want to be there so they give you non-answers or the bare minimum so you won't bother them. So, I left. It's a shame because their coffee beans are good but not worth being treated like they are doing you a favor. Head over to Square 1 for good coffee and Great Service!

Dick W.

Yelp
Only two customers in the place. The server (employee) was holding a personal conversation with someone and left me standing for at least 3-5 minutes and never came to me to take my coffee order. I walked out, and she didn't have the decency to even ask why I was leaving. Such rude behavior!
google avatar

Chris L.

Yelp
The baristas were helpful, the coffee didn't take long to be served, my Ethiopian Jimma pourover was over-the-top amazing, so sweet, caramel, plum, and dried fruit tartness. As a Q-grader, this is exactly what I expect from roasteries and cafes that claim to be specialty. My daughter's chai was very delicious too. Thanks Passenger!

Yelp
Found this coffee shop off of the Lancaster Coffee Trail. The space was beautiful with limited seating. It is near Lancaster Central Market and it also worked out I was trying a new workout studio in the area. It is centrally located with plenty of street parking. The employees were very passionate about their coffee and had a ton of knowledge. I tried their iced oat latte with simple syrup and a vegan chocolate chip cookie. The cookie was the perfect texture, you would have never know it was vegan! It was also the perfect sweetness to compliment my coffee. They do have a very limited amount of syrups if that's your thing; they only had the simple syrup and a mocha during my visit. Definitely would recommend!

Yelp
This is a cool coffee bar and is very minimalistic. I had the cappuccino and it was good. Prompt service and good vibes. I would go here again next time when I'm in the area.

Yelp
The cutest coffee shop. It reminds me of hip cafes in California. I love the minimalist decor and the huge bird of paradise plant. When it's not crowded this place is the perfect place to drink a cup of coffee. The service is exceptional for a coffee shop and all the baristas are knowledgeable about coffee. I love their espresso blend, and usually get an oat milk cappuccino. Their pastries are also not to be missed. I'm a huge fan of their savory and regular biscuits, fluffy yet dense enough to fill you up. This time we had their morning bun which was the perfect level of sweet, and not too sweet with hints of cinnamon. It's one of my favorite spots in Lancaster and I stop here every time I'm in town.

Grace S.

Yelp
Coffee was so yum, limited seating. Pastries are also so good, got a homemade pop tart!
google avatar

Jessica S.

Yelp
Amazing latte! Usually I grab a matcha latte, but since they did not have that, I opted for a simple latte with oat milk. It was creamy and smooth paired with a savory biscuit. Not much seating in the front with three bar stools by the window counter. It was an amazing spot to people watch and stare outside during a rainy day.

Yelp
SOUKOU MATCHA!!!!!!! i am BLOWN away by the quality of matcha at this place, absolutely divine and a must get when in this area! matcha: there's two, i tried the soukou matcha. they delicately take their time to make the drink, and it actually only comes out to a small portion that doesn't fill the cup, but every sip is worth the price! i love how it's not milky or grainy, but a delicious smooth and punchy matcha flavor. interior: super bright and large, although you can't sit down to drink at the moment, i would love to come back when that becomes available. right next to the market with fresh produce too!

Yelp
My favorite and in my opinion best coffee spot in Lancaster whenever I visit from Philadelphia! This place is consistently ranked in the Top coffee roasters by food and wine magazine and it lives up to the hype! I usually go for a iced latte with oat milk (it's really good, I wish they added more oat milk so the ratio would be more milk and if they would have larger sizes for their regular cup)
google avatar

Ryan L.

Yelp
I believe that Passenger has the best coffee in Lancaster county. Even the standard filter coffee Keystone blend was really flavorful with notes of berry and chocolate. I loved it. The space has awkward seating with many people camped out at a table that could fit five. But the decor is beautiful. The service is super nice and friendly. The only food is pastries and baked goods. The berry pop tart was excellent.'

Yelp
Calling all coffee nerds and junkies! If you live in PA or are visiting Lancaster, go to Passenger! Located in the heart of downtown Lancaster, what started as a little coffee shop in a small air stream with vibes of a train car, has now grown into a beautiful coffee shop of quality, well knowledgeable and super friendly baristas and a coffee that's warm, welcoming, and simply beautiful. I spent sometime in here yesterday just talking with them And drinking a coffee and espresso. I came from eating lunch at prince street cafe (around the corner, and they serve passenger too) but going to the cafe is the experience you want, from a cup to pour overs to some some tasty espresso, this your spot, their roastery is even down the street and offers tours and tasting by appt. only M-F (7-11AM). My espresso was served proper with a tonic water to cleanse the palate before the taste and it was good! They also have "one to one" on their menu, that's for the coffee nerds, if your not sure what that is, look it up. Overall, great coffee, great people and being from Cali.... us coffee nerds know about them. I am happy for their growth and quality in the craft coffee scene. Lastly, they even have gorgeous baked goods and vegan ones to offer, I'm coming back again soon bc the chocolate vegan chip cookie had me drooling. ;-) Much love y'all!

Yelp
Nice visit. Quirky staff, had a neat conversation with one of them about espresso. Enjoyed the spritzer with the macchiato very nice touch. Bought a bag of coffee for the ride home. Would revisit

Yelp
Went in the morning of 9/17/24 and had a great experience with the barista. I asked for his favorite reserve pour over and I was not disappointed. INSANE blueberry and red fruit aroma. Will be my new coffee spot when I'm in town.

Yelp
Can't even begin to express how positive my experience at Passenger was! I tried four different drinks as well as the homemade poptart, and each was incredible. Of the drinks I tried, I was most impressed with the Nitro Cold Brew Green Tea, it was creamy and delicious and really unique. Everything was reasonably priced, and the staff was incredibly helpful and passionate about their products. Definitely stop by!

Chris N.

Yelp
Best cup of coffee I had in the area. The staff was friendly. The food was pretty good, too.

Yelp
Friendly & trendy & fantastic coffee. Got takeout iced coffee, a hot latte & morning buns. The baristas was super kind & patient and they packaged my order to go! The shop is cute and the coffee was quality. Did not disappoint.

Oleksander K.

Yelp
Best coffee place in town. From the fanciest drink to the most basic drip coffee, you cannot go wrong.

Trisha R.

Yelp
Good coffee, good service and great place! Would come back. Enjoyed my coffee - thanks!

Yelp
This coffee shop was everything! I loved everything from the the decor, to the uniforms, to my fantastic latte ordered. It has a fresh look, neutral walls, nice lettering on beverage menu board & a wall of fresh coffee for purchase. The uniforms were a basic top and bottom w a denim apron that I absolutely loved! The denim made the uniform. Initially I was a little disappointed that they didn't have any flavor shots for the latte, but I ordered it anyway & it was everything & more! Just watching the barista handcraft my latte was an adventure. It appears the people that work there are really happy and really take pride in what they do. Lastly I ordered a bar of fresh granola & it was so good! I snacked on that granola for the rest of the evening! I would definitely visit this place again if in the area!!

Christine G.

Yelp
I was in Lancaster for 2 days, and stopped by Passenger both mornings for an amazing latte. I just returned from Spain where they know how to make coffee, and my drink here was of the same quality and craftsmanship. It was so delicious I didn't need sweetener, and I am someone who really needs sweet flavor in my Starbucks lattes. Not here! I also tried the chai topped banana bread, which was delectable. There's only one size of drinks (just like Spain!), and pricing is a little higher, but the quality and friendliness of the staff makes it worth it. Can't wait until I'm back in town.

Yelp
Fantastic coffee. Friendly and helpful service. Clean and fresh interior- inspired by Scadanavia. All around a winner.
google avatar

Monica S.

Yelp
I love this cafe. Very friendly and positive atmosphere. Once, I came in and there was nowhere to sit. It was so crowded on a Sunday. The cashier kindly asked some people if I could share their table with them, which he didn't have to do during a busy time in the day. He went above and beyond to welcome me. I always enjoy the one and one. The blueberry pop tart is my favorite.
google avatar

Mason H.

Yelp
Great selection of roasted beans to go as well as coffees made to order. Baristas are very knowledgeable about all the products they carry. Coffee is smooth and flavorful. Cozy environment.
google avatar

Kate C.

Yelp
They have the sweetest people who are so patient and passionate talking about coffee, I got the latte and it taste quite good, the atmosphere is very relaxing and I absolutely love the minimalist vibes
google avatar

Cindy C.

Yelp
My husband and I stopped in on a very quiet Monday morning before heading home from a weekend away. My latte and chia shortbread cookie were both fresh and tasty. We were the only people in the coffee shop, so we enjoyed a chat at one of the small tables in the window. It was very open, clean and comfortable inside.
google avatar

Steven M.

Yelp
Fantastic little 3rd wave coffee shop! A verity of roasts and regions for coffee. They have bottled cold brew both black and one with milk and slightly sweetened. They have a verity interesting tea for drinks and louse leaf bags to go. The staff is very nice and knows how to make a yummy cappuccino.

Katie B.

Yelp
High quality coffee, friendly people! I love the wide variety of retail beans and the staff is always super helpful.
google avatar

Vanessa L.

Yelp
The Passenger team focuses on a simple menu of artisan coffee styles, but quality yet its practical appearance somehow manages to ace aesthetics making it Instagrammable especially on a Fall day or a snow day (Downtown Lanc in the Fall/snow!my heart!) They also have a selection of loose leaf teas and most of the staff are on hand to answer questions. They also recently started stocking for Four Twelve in Hamburg and Pressed in Hamburg, but more teas than coffee. Due to the distance, I can certainly understand this and am grateful enough I can get it closer to home. When I do want more coffee options by the bag, I head to Passenger's flagship here on King. The only thing that changes is the coffee and tea selections. And the atmosphere is comfortable and cozy to do work or even write a novel about it all. That bourbon blend certainly revs my energy enough...

Lisa R.

Yelp
So good! I had the iced matcha tea drink. I loved the relaxing ambiance inside too. Can't wait to return.

Bruce E.

Yelp
Very nice decor and atmosphere. Very inviting. Very minimalist approach to most things. However, the thing that really turned me off was they refused to make a redeye. So basically a coffee with a shot of espresso they refused to mix that. They told me if I wanted that I had to buy the two items separately and mix it myself. when I asked them whether or not, it was against their sensibility to mix it for me, they said yes. It offended them that I wanted to make a redeye out of the regular coffee and their espresso since they were pretty much different coffee. But as the customer, if I don't care, and that's what I want, they should serve that. but instead, they refused. I think this is a ridiculous policy.! Just about every coffee shop I know will make a redeye for you. Not this one. Go somewhere else and avoid the ridiculous policies. This coffee shop has.!

Yelp
I always stop at Passenger Coffee when I'm heading to Ohio from my family member's how in Maryland. I think passenger stands out among coffee places in Lancaster and PA through roasting some of the most notable and most expensive coffees in the world, and they do it well. And they are always working toward making excellent coffee available for any budget, even poor folk like me who spend their hard earned money on good coffee. Not only is it the excellent coffee that makes me take an hour detour, but it's the staff at Passenger who actively engaged me and took a genuine interest in me and all guests who I witnessed buy coffee. I will continue to make the hour detour when I'm heading home from visiting my family to get some excellent coffee.

Jacqueline M.

Yelp
Very clean and chill space. Workers were very friendly. I ordered an iced chai and it was one of the best drinks I've ever had. Flavorful and not too sweet.

Jessica B.

Yelp
This is my favorite coffee shop in Lancaster! It is high quality. I recommend getting a pour over. The store is so modern and aesthetically pleasing, the employees are so friendly and answered any question I had, and the coffee was incredible. Will always come back here when I am in town!
google avatar

Yelp
I usually judge places at first by trying the most basic thing they offer. Passenger could possibly be the best coffee I've ever had. My only complaint is they could have larger sized cups for takeout because I just want to dump more of their coffee onto my face and body
