The Latest New Orleans Restaurant Closings, June 2024 | Eater New Orleans

"An eight-year-old LGD staple known for desserts, cocktails, and savory bar bites, I recall that Charlotte McGehee and Charles Mary IV opened the corner restaurant in 2016 as a showcase for their cake business Debbie Does Doberge; it evolved from a dessert and night-cap destination into a brunch-and-dinner spot incorporating Latin American influences, and owners said in an Instagram post that 'it's the right time' to close (June is its last month) and 'the right way to expand Debbie Does Doberge wholesale operations' and focus on Debbie on the Levee in Rivertown, with Wednesday, July 1 as its last day." - Clair Lorell

Google
Super sweet little bakery, staffed by kind folks, with robust selections of sweets, savory, and drinks! Seems to be especially popular within the surrounding community as the go-to place to get kids birthday cakes and other celebratory cakes! Well worth the visit!

TASTE (4/10): Tried the pan con todo and… nope, not for me. My wife had something green, maybe spinach or dill or a forest? She loved it. I stayed confused and unimpressed. One pastry, potato-ish, was kind of okay. Overall, though, it was like a pastry roulette and I kept losing. Aloe vera drink, on the other hand, was delicious. PRICE (8/10): Reasonable and wallet-friendly. Not dirt cheap but not cry-in-the-car expensive either. SERVICE (9/10): Sweet, friendly folks with a positive vibe. They looked like they actually enjoy being alive, which is rare and refreshing. ATTITUDE (9/10): Welcoming and chill. No fake smiles, just good energy. PLACE (7/10): Clean and orderly. Outdoor seating available, so you can contemplate your pastry regrets in fresh air. CLEANLINESS (9/10): Tidy and well-kept. No visible dough-based disasters. ADDITIONAL FEES/HIDDEN COSTS (10/10): None at all. Just straightforward pricing and pastry confusion. OVERALL IMPRESSION: I didn’t vibe with the food, but I’d still go back to taste the other options.

Cute little bakery + deli, open space, fairly clean, tables can use some additional wiping down. Fresh pastries, creamy and crispy treats. Coffee tasted smooth. Unbeatable prices, very reasonable. Have 4 tables for inside sit downs and additional ones outside. Staff were very friendly, foods came out fresh and fast. Definitely recommend. Support local businesses!

Google
I’ve been a loyal customer of this bakery for over three years, frequently ordering for holidays and special occasions. The quality has always been great. Recently, I ordered a bridal shower cake—it took multiple follow-ups to get the order placed, but the cake turned out beautifully and the bride loved it. However, my most recent experience was very disappointing. I returned on a Friday afternoon to place the wedding cake order. The assistant manager refused to help, claiming they were “understaffed” - even though the bakery was empty and other staff were present. She was unprofessional, dismissive and irritated. Despite us willing to wait and the bakery having no customers to assist, she went to the back and never returned. It was an upsetting experience, especially after years of support. Unfortunately, we had to take our business elsewhere. I hope the management addresses this issue, as the service we received was unacceptable.

Google
We placed a fairly large order ( $130 ) a couple days ago with a birthday cake, cookies, sandwiches. We came home and opened the sandwich boxes - croissant with chicken salad and the chicken salad was literally less than a table spoon on the entire croissant. I took the time to call and spoke to Martha. She gave me the number for Jamie - a manager to text a pic - Martha assured I would hear back by the end of the day. I thought we would do the right thing and let them know and give a chance to fix it. I guess they are not interested in fixing it. Kool we just won’t do patronize any longer.

Google
They are my go-to for every single celebration! I can depend on their cakes tasting as delicious as I last had a bite and their variety is enough to fit the tastebuds of every guest. I can also depend on them always stocked with grab-n-go cakes if I need one in a pinch. Please give at least 2 days advance for cake orders, I also recommend their cupcake versions of their cakes.

Google
I have been coming to passion bakery for years as I am a local to the Ashton Sandy Spring area. I always get the pastries and they are amazing. I have gotten the grilled cheese many times before but this time it was so sad :( I paid $5 for one single slice of cheese to be semi melted to the bread. It could have been an off day but I was so excited for it and it did not suffice. Hoping for something better next time!

Google
I called them as soon as they opened after a baking emergency. They were able to accommodate my last minute request, and went above and beyond my expectations for what I was receiving. The decorations were beautiful and the cake was DELICIOUS! It was for a gender reveal so they truly had a huge part in making the couple’s day a special day to remember. Amazing customer service and would always recommend this amazing bakery!

Yelp
Great customer service I truly believe they make their cakes with passion. They are amazing and delicious.

Yelp
This was my first time eating in and decided to get a late breakfast. They have both indoor and outdoor seating - not a lot, but just enough. One of their Breakfast Menu items show you can get an Egg and Cheese sandwich. However, if you want to add any of the following: lettuce, tomato, onions, bacon, ham, turkey bacon, or sausage, you will have to pay a little extra. For bread you can choose either White or Wheat Toast, Croissant, or a Bagel. I got my Egg and Cheese sandwich with Sausage on a croissant. The egg comes scrambled and they will bring the sandwich out to you, which I liked. It came out at a perfect temperature and tasted great overall. The croissant was flaky. For drink I got the Strawberry-Coconut Matcha. It is served with ice, and I think they ask what milk you want to mix it with (not sure about this). However, I do remember when I received the drink, it looked just like the image they had. Matcha at the top, Strawberry pieces at the bottom including Coconut Jelly. Once I got it, I mixed everything in the drink to get all those flavors together and it was so good. I really enjoyed it and would definitely have it again. I also got one of their fruit tarts to-go (still don't know the flavor).

Yelp
I stopped here while visiting the area. This local bakery is full of personality. The staff was friendly and held a conversation with me during my visit. I ordered a vanilla latte and pastry to go. Both items were tasty. I will definitely visit this cafe again, if I am in the area.

Yelp
I've driven by Passion so many times yet never popped in. I decided to change that last week. It's kind of your average bakery Cafe inside, with glass cases with various baked goods in it. It was surprisingly crowded inside, with a bit of a line that I felt moved rather slowly. Meh -- it's a bakery, and I'm not rushed for my sugar dose. I grabbed a cinnamon swirl, a bread pudding, and a piece of chocolate mousse cake. The cinnamon swirl I ate there. It was moist, flavourful, and good. I thought the bread pudding was kind of overly dense and sweet, but ... I tend to like mine a bit less sweet than many places. Ugh. Guys. I'm stupid. I took that cake for later and forgot about it. It was THE THING I wanted to try. It looked so good in the bakery show window. And... three days later, it did not. :( Guess I'll have to go back for another piece. Oh, woe is me! Woe!

Yelp
Came here with my sister and this bakery and I was pleased surprised. We got the carrot cake, cheesecake, chocolate cookie and tiramisu. The tiramisu was fresh and made very well. When we came they seemed to be semi empty.

Yelp
Lovely bakery with a variety of cakes, pastries and savory goods as well. I was in a pinch to get a cake last minute for a gathering and passion bakery had a great selection of cakes in multiple sizes on display. I went with the mango mousse cake which was delicious. The mousse and cake were soft and fluffy. It had a good mango flavor and everyone loved the cake. The staff were very helpful in helping me pick a cake and wrapped it up perfectly that made it easy to transport. Would definitely come back to try other items on their menu.

Yelp
Five stars for this delicious bakery. Originally my family is from New York and New York is my second home. I have to say that you can't find good baked goods around here. A lot of bakeries produce nights looking cakes but the taste is like drek. These other bakeries use pre-made fillings and icings full of chemicals and taste like it. This Bakery on Brookville (near the intersection of Georgia Ave in Olney) is unbelievable. I was just so happened to go to here to get a little something on the way to a friend's house. Never been here before, but WOW, I highly recommend it! Fresh, homemade assortment of sandwiches and don't even get me started on the baked goods... See all my photos. The pastries were absolutely fresh and tasted like they were baked same day, the cakes were gorgeous. I sampled some; as they sell slices, and let me tell you when you have to get a cake for a birthday or anniversary, this is the place to go. They taste as good as they look which is very rare for bakeries in this area. I highly, highly, recommend this beautiful bakery. It's tiny and they only have about four tables to seat 6-10 people, so depending on the time of day you may or may not get a seat but this place is so worth it, I would eat in my car if I had to. It's that good. Reasonable prices and extremely friendly knowledgeable employees make this an A1 place to go!

Yelp
This cute little place has gone down hill over the years. I used to come in once a week and now it's maybe every 6 months. Came in today for pastries and coffees. Not only did it take 15+ minutes to get mid day on a Tuesday but the order was wrong. My mom ordered an ice coffee and when the man behind us ordered an ice coffee he was told they didn't have any. So I questioned - did she get the last one? The girl said no; we don't sell it and she didn't order one. She continued to argue with my mom about what she ordered! Yikes! The food is still good here but service is less than average.

Yelp
Unfortunately, after purchasing cakes several times a year for many years after an initial negative experience, the last cake we purchased will be our last. The cakes have worsened each time we order one -- very dry, lacking the superb taste we once loved, and not worth the value anymore. We have tried preordering as well as picking a cake and purchasing while we are there. Both have ended in the same outcome. I hope the quality improves.

Yelp
Excellent cakes at great prices ! You can pick the design of cake on pin trest and they will recreate it for you

Yelp
Tried the lox sandwich and it was great!! Place was busy when I was there on a Saturday afternoon for lunch. They have a wide variety of cakes and cookies.

Yelp
We phone-ordered dessert pastries for a family birthday. The pic shows $60 of pastries. When you go to pick up, you are told to wait at the end of the ordering line. Apparently there is no line or station dedicated to expedite pickup orders. They store your order by name only, so you need to know the name under which the order was placed (daughter placed & paid for order but used my name since I was going to be picking it up). Pastries look so delicious but are less tasty than they look. Custard is not classic pastry custard; rather, a more whipped cream filling in every pastry. The pastry itself is tough & not easily cut through. Still, the pastries are on par with many other bakeries in this area, but I cannot tell the difference between those here & those from Giant Food grocery store.

Yelp
Wonderful bakery with a large assortment of beautiful pastries. I had mango cheesecake and a fruit tart and both were delicious! They serve brewed and espresso-based coffee drinks and they're good. They have a small menu of hot breakfast and lunch items. I've had the chicken quesadilla and it was delicious, although the salsa was bland. Finally they have a rotating assortment of goodies from El Salvador. I've had the chicken and cheese empanadas and a cake with sesame seeds. Both were absolutely delicious. Service is great and ranges from professional to friendly (never rude). I live several hundred miles away but make it a point to visit every time I'm in town.

Yelp
Best bakery I have ever tried! There are some minor flaws though. Small space with some outside room. Lots of parking in the back with awesome cookies, cakes, and pies! I highly recommend the cookies here! Employees are very kind and are careful when handling the food! Love it!

Yelp
I phoned in an order for a 14" birthday cake. I heard great reviews of this bakery (and after the fact learned that one of my friends orders from this bakery every year for her children's birthdays). The cake was ginormous and made just as ordered with the message drawn in correctly. I know what 14" diameter is but I didn't know the height, which was about 6" tall and made the cake look so impressive. Pickup was easy. Free, ample parking in the side lot. I would definitely order from here again. I love cake!

Yelp
Small bakery with both classic and unique/creative baked goods as well as coffee and espresso based drinks I got a vanilla latte and an array of halloween decorated cookies. Both were delicious A few small tables inside

Yelp
I have often come to the Sandy Spring location, but it seems service has degraded lately. They have many high quality baked goods, but the staff has become a bit rude - screwing up orders, never thanking the customers after the purchases, etc. My complaint is them never having decaffeinated coffee, although they used to serve it. This has happened the last two times I've visited. The staff offers no explanation of why they don't have it. I guess I'll just take my business elsewhere.

Yelp
Omg I've tried them for the first time today and there amazing. I had the cheesecake amazing, brownie amazing, my partner got the tres leche... the fruit tart ...I plan on going back.

Yelp
I would give this place 0 stars if I could. I ordered two cakes. One regular sized cake for a cake smash and one extra tall cake that I asked to be 8" tall. When picking up the cake smash cake, they made a mistake and made it taller. When picking up the extra tall cake, it looked exactly like the cake smash cake that I picked up two weeks prior. I had two events with two cakes that were not what I ordered. When I tried to dispute the issue when I picked up the cake the manager was not in and they asked me to call the next day. When she called me, they refused to give me a price adjustment because I didn't ask for a full refund but I want to pay for what I got. For the first cake she said "well we made a mistake and made it taller so we actually charged you less". Yes but you made the mistake so why should I pay more? For the second cake, she said what I received is what I ordered which was not what I ordered. The cake is 6 inches tall. They refused to fix the problem. Twice. I don't think it's unreasonable to pay for what I received, which is the same cake as the cake smash that was less expensive. I would never go to this place again. They ruined both cake orders and have the worst customer service when dealing with mistakes on their end. Order elsewhere where they will make your order correctly and try to fix issues if they arise. Also, my first cake had a light layer of some type of jelly (raspberry or strawberry) which I did not ask for and did not complain about. If my child was allergic to this, I'd be upset about this mistake as well. Maybe instead of taking it out on the customer, maybe look into why the baker is making constant mistakes...

Yelp
Lovely bakery with flavors that cater to my kind of palette. For example, my all time favorite thing they make that my family and I adore is their mango mousse cake! We get this cake for countless amounts of birthday parties and special occasions. They also make really good strawberry cakes, Kailua cheesecakes, fruit tarts, and even sweet and savory empanadas! Their sweet empanada consisted of sweet plantains with cinnamon- delicious! Their savory was chicken and cheese- also yum! I love to support and give business to quaint little shops and this place is welcoming, has kind staff, and the pastries and sweets as a whole are tasty! Can't wait to come back again and maybe next time try their pineapple danish! Yum!

Yelp
By far my favorite bake shop. The cakes here are wonderful. I have bought pastries as well and all were delicious. My favorite was the chocolate mousse cake and the carrot cake.

Yelp
I needed some cakes for our Christmas Eve dessert table. My sister told about this bakery and I decided to place an order. They are friendly when calling - I ordered a 6" Tres Leche and a 6" Strawberry Shortcake. It was busy when picking up my order. I didn't know where in the bakery I had to go and pick up the cakes. The staff were friendly and working hard on getting orders out. I love the presentation of their cakes - so cute! The flavors are amazing!!! So light and fluffy. Perfect sweetness and filling in each cake. Everyone enjoyed them. I will be ordering my cakes there in the future.
google avatar

Yelp
My husband brought me here to pick out my 40th birthday cake . I went for the strawberry shortcake. It was fantastic. I was hoping for a Black Forest but that one had to be ordered. Still this was most certainly a fine replacement. One of the best birthday cakes I've had over the years. Staff was COVID-19 safe and only allowed 4 customers in at a time. Always happy to support a local business. Thank you for adding to my special day.

Pete G.

Yelp
The food was awesome. They're always very friendly. The prices are good and I love love love the passionfruit cake.

Yelp
We bought a red velvet cake for our moms birthday and asked for "Happy Birthday Mom" to be written on top. The cake tasted good

Yelp
Passion Bakery Cafe is a beloved bakery in Sandy Spring north of Washington, D.C. They sell cakes, pastries and other food items. I stopped in on a Thursday morning after hiking the nearby Underground Railroad Experience Trail for breakfast. Since it was during the pandemic, I waited outside until I could enter. (They are letting in four customers at a time.) I ordered a chocolate croissant, a plantain empanada and a ham and cheese croissant. All was delicious, but the plantain empanada was a little too moist (but unique). The prices are cheap and service fast.

Yelp
SO DISAPPOINTED!!! I ordered a cake on Wednesday through email bc their phone took me to a full mailbox. Melvin confirmed the order and told me "no problem". I told him I going to pick it up on Saturday at 5pm. Before driving 25 minutes to the store, I called at 4pm to confirm my cake was ready. I called and a young lady put me on hold to check if my cake was there. After few minutes, she (or another young lady) came back on the phone to ask which cake I ordered again. Then another lady got on the phone asking how I placed the order and what I ordered. I guess my cake wasn't made bc they couldn't confirm it was ready. I was on hold for 10 minutes just for them to confirm my order. She apologized for the confusion and told me the cake would be ready. The cake was for a party and it was going to be served after dinner. I kept it in the fridge (not freezer) for few hours. When it was time to eat it, the mousse was ICY and not smooth. I think the bakery used frozen mousse and made the cake in a hurry bc I was picking up within an hour. I had this cake before and the mousse is supposed to be smooth and creamy. The icy mousse was not good. It was a waste of $48! I had a guest not finish their slice bc the texture of the mousse was odd.

Yelp
Oh man - the light and dark chocolate mousse cake. Stop reading. Now. Go get one. Seriously Again - owing to the delightful lady I met in light early Wednesday (just before Thanksgiving) in line at the HoneyBaked Ham store, I heard about this place. I made the brief jaunt via GPS and was pleasantly surprised to find a tidy little shop that appeared to be family owned. When I walked in, the display cases were positively brimming with delectable edible pastry forms of every conceivable shape, color, and size. I was warmly greeted by the proprietor and when it was clear I was having a hard time choosing, the gentleman warmly suggested the light and dark chocolate mousse cake. Pleasantly disarmed by the knowing suggesting I opted for just what the man recommended. Yesterday, with a party of 22 guests...that cake got DEMOLISHED!! First, it looks much sweeter than it is (with copious white and dark chocolate shavings all over the cake). The crumb structure of the white cake and chocolate cake layers inside was perfect. They were strong enough to support the beguiling and satiny mousse layers without ever being tough. The cream-based frosting was appropriately applied so as never to throw the cake to icing ratio off (this is often a problem with "fancier" cakes). Everyone raved about the cake and I will 100% be back to get not just another one of these cakes...I will excitedly look forward to more recommendation. Cake well, my friends!

Ewa B.

Yelp
The pastries are very good, but the service is appalling! The only way to order is to call the place. I was put on hold multiple times (15 minutes at the time) and then hang up on. After that they stopped to pick up calls all together, got directed to the voice mail box, that was already full. I used to love this place, but this is totally disrespectful towards your customers! Not going back again!

Yelp
Cute little shop with convenient parking. I was helped quickly when I arrived and was happy to see that they had a good selection of deserts available. I got a small mixed fruit shortcake and they customized it for me. The cake was excellent. Very light and fluffy with a nice milky taste. I also ordered some macaroons and chocolate covered strawberries. I didn't get to taste them. My husband liked the red velvet one a lot. Very happy to find this place! I love a nice cake. The local grocery stores can not compare!

Alicia B.

Yelp
I live about 800 feet from this location, so it's literally right next door. With that said, I've been going there almost two years now and have always had a good experience. The food is always delicious, and I love the convenience of having it so close by. However, the last few months, some of the staff have had very sour faces when you go in there, which makes the experience very unpleasant. Giving a smile to someone coming to patronize your business should never be that difficult. There is only one young lady there that always smiles and is very friendly with me! The rest act as if you are coming in there to beg, and not spend your money. I worked in retail and customer service for many, many years, and knew how to greet and welcome customers with a hello, a smile and a nice disposition. I don't know who the owner of this establishment is, but they need to ensure the staff they employ at least knows how to present a smile on their faces. It's such a shame that a nice cute little shop like this has to have women on the front line looking at you as though you slept with them last night. I'll continue going for the food, but the staff there now is horrible!

Kristine P.

Yelp
Love this place a lot. Parking on side and in rear- you can turn at the light and the side street does connect! Cute florist shop next door- flowers, sweets, and coffee for your dearest? They have a vegetable quiche that is quite tasty- a lil heavy on the cheddar but I get it every other time I stop in. Croissants and danishes are huge and fluffy and delicious- such a treat! Kids love the sugar sprinkled cookies and cupcakes. The fruit topped cheesecake or tiramisu are my faves. Let lime is also quite tasty when I'm in the mood. Breakfast sandwiches are great too- and cappuccino machine works again- so I'm a happy camper when I swing by!

Sharon W.

Yelp
Got there at 6:40 for to order 3 cappuccinos and was told they close at 7pm which I knew of course and was told that they had already turned off their machine...Will NEVER go there again!!!!

Dorie E.

Yelp
I can't eat gluten, so I've only had two items from Passion. The almond horn cookies are fantastic, and the coconut macaroons are delicious. Both are also gluten free! I go frequently for the almond horns, which I crave!

Yelp
Our family has ordered more than a dozen specialty cakes from Passion Bakery over the past ~5 or so years. We've always been satisfied with their products, but the past three months have been consistently disappointing. Given the high price of their baked goods (2-3 times more expensive than Teeter or Giant custom cakes), we felt like we had to post a review after three failed purchases. What's worse is that you'd expect a family-owned bakery with high prices to correct any errors they might make--nope. The work ethic and quality have significantly changed in the past few months--they still charge double to triple prices compared to other local bakeries, but for sub-par goods that they do not stand behind. Recent cakes have been dry, and their cheesecake recipe is droopy/runny--not at all what you'd expect a gourmet cheesecake to taste like. Further, their decorating artist must have retired because their most recent creations look like a 2nd grader wrote on the cake. As you can see by the attached photo, the writing looks like a young child completed it--one who did not know how to spell "Chloe." They unsuccessfully tried to correct it. "17th" is not centered and looks weird. And brown for the frosting color? This is not the kind of quality we expect for a $42 custom cake. When we complained to the bakery, we received no resolution. Take your business elsewhere, and you'll likely be able to spend far less for much better quality.

Yelp
Passion bakery is a nice and cozy cafe, the service is good and friendly! The food here is great! I love the sweet treats! I would definitely recommend Passion Bakery!!!

Yelp
I love Passion bakery and specially their tres leeches cake. My family insists on that cake for all our events. I also have tried and line

Yelp
Breakfast veggie burritos off the chain prices are great. The pastries and cookies and macaroons were just amazing.
google avatar

Celeste F.

Yelp
The consistently best bakery in the area. The pastries are fresh and delicious, and the staff is great. Reasonable prices and strong coffee. My favorite thing about this bakery is that they have so many savory pastries-- the spinach and feta croissants are out of this world. I make a stop here every time I'm in Olney.
google avatar

Sika A.

Yelp
Rarely write reviews however; would like to express how disappointed I was yesterday for gluten free vanilla cake I ordered. Whoever made my gluten free cake May 13th of last year needs to be rehired. This year, the cake was very dense and was not eatable.
google avatar

Val K.

Yelp
Love this place! I always get their chicken salad sandwich on a croissant and pick up a few of their macaroons. It's a great place to get lunch and a great bakery if you like sweets!

Yelp
When visiting our family we we walk here for a breakfast sandwich a couple times on our stay. It was delish and very hard to stay away from their delectable treats.

Yelp
Came to them on very short notice with a picture of the exact cake I wanted. Picked it up the next morning and it was perfect and tasted absolutely amazing. They know what they're doing here, highly recommend.

Yelp
Stopped in to choose a birthday cake for my 12 year old. The man who helped me was friendly and helped me select the chocolate mousse cake. He crafted a birthday message, and we were all set. Friendly and helpful customer service. Delicious chocolate mousse cake.

Girija R.

Yelp
Excellent cakes! I have tried only 4 types so far and they were all great. Very courteous service too!

Yelp
Great omelette. Normally go here for cakes and desserts, stopped by for breakfast today. Nice clientele

Yelp
I enjoyed the cakes they are always so good I only get my cakes from this place and they never fail!
