The 38 Essential Restaurants in Tāmaki Makaurau (Auckland, New Zealand)

"To say too much would be to ruin the magic of an evening spent at Pasture and Boxer, two distinctly different venues that offer the country’s most unique eating and drinking experiences. Pasture is a six-seater restaurant helmed by chef Ed Verner, where diners watch from barstools as the kitchen creates memorable tasting menus over open fire. Next door, Boxer offers a range of complex, seasonal drinks concocted by the chefs of Pasture, based on spirits distilled in-house using a rotary evaporator. Beverages are accompanied by a lavish tasting of snacks that are often fresh, raw, and Japanese-leaning. Look for the signature tuna (eel) and tītī, an endemic seabird with an anchovy-like flavor that’s harvested by Māori hunters on Rakiura (Stewart Island), usually preserved in salt but here cooked fresh. Every element of Pasture and Boxer — from the soundtrack to the bespoke interiors — is carefully curated by the creative team. — LJ Note: Hillary Eaton has a personal affiliation with Pasture and did not author elements related to Pasture, Boxer, or Alpha." - Hillary Eaton, Leisha Jones

What ‘Reopened’ Restaurants Look Like in 17 Cities Worldwide - Eater

"It’s a drizzly winter night in Auckland and six guests stand outside Pasture restaurant. A couple dressed to the nines wonders about a dish of chlorophyll-green abalone they saw on Instagram, while two regulars pine for the chef’s three-month-aged wagyu. At 5:45, chef Ed Verner welcomes each guest into the restaurant with a drink and leads them to their seat at the six-person chef’s counter facing the hearth — the fire that brings the 21-course menu to life. Just three weeks after restaurants were allowed to reopen, it’s essentially business as usual at the city’s premiere fine dining destination. In fact, it’s booked solid every weekend into August. Today, as with each day before it, the city seems to lighten from the weight of weeks in isolation, when every meal was made (or microwaved) from what could be scavenged from bare grocery store shelves and even the simplest forms of physical human contact — a hug, a handshake — was an illicit fantasy. It’s hard to remember those times when the only remnants are a paper sign-in sheet at the front of the restaurant and a meter between tables. Tonight, New Zealand feels even more like a tiny island nation alone in the Pacific Ocean than it normally does, especially by the glow of a restaurant’s wood-burning fire." - Eater Staff

I had high hopes for this fine dining restaurant, especially given my past experiences at some of the world's best 50 and Asia's best 50 restaurants. However, my visit was a complete letdown. There was no communication between the chef and guests, which was a disappointment, as I was expecting a more personalized experience for a meal that costs $375+ pp. I had hoped for a $190 pp wine pairing that would complement my meal, but unfortunately, there was no in-depth introduction, and the wine didn't pair well with my food, I wonder if the sommelier who design the pairing had ever tried the food, or was it even designed by a sommelier? Not to mention the $50 staff charge, and guess what, they even charged for my bloody warm water. The prices were exorbitant, and I felt like I was being ripped off. To make matters worse, the open kitchen's hygiene was not up to par, which was concerning. The knives had rust stains on them, using takeaway plastic containers and those blue tissue towels seemed out of place in a fine dining establishment. Overall, I would not recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for a memorable fine dining experience. This money could have been well spend at other restaurant.

Google
A beautiful meal at Pasture. The menu is innovative and unique - many dishes challenge the thinking on flavour combinations, but were delicious and truely an experience to consume. The wine pairings all matched the dishes well and were generously poured. The service was attentive without being overbearing and the ambience was great. Looking forward to returning some day.

Decided to come here because it was my last chance before I left Auckland. They were very supporting of my last minute booking, considered I booked only 8 hours before service. First impressions were excellent, decor was very cost, introduction was great. The chef made the ambience very friendly. For me, considering it's my first experience in these kind of high number of courses with drinks matching, it wasn't to my expectations. I had heard high reviews from colleagues about this place, but out of the 14 courses I had, I like only 5-6 of them. That said, considering it was my first experience, it could be that I just wasn't used to the unique flavours that the chef wanted to present. The high rating was for everything else. I'm not that picky about my food, I just about eat everything that's not green. I did surprisingly like the greens that were served in most courses. Overall, would recommend to others to dine in Pasture.

Google
Mind-blowing experience!! My partner and I could only think of one other restaurant meal that could even compare to how incredible this was (Borago in Santiago, if you’re interested). The attention to detail was impeccable, the dishes the perfect balance between experimental flourishes and strong execution.

Google
Unbelievable, Ed and the team always take it to the next level. Pictures really don't do the amazing quality, attention to detail or sheer gumption of the team. The food is excellent, the drinks match are excellent. I haven't been so satisfied by a meal as I am when I come here. I can't wait to come back for .y third time.

Google
A very different dining experience but amazing. Exquisite ingredients prepared and served in ways you would never image. Wine matching was excellent. Staff were amazing. On the pricey side for dining but definitely worth every cent.

Google
Oh, my. The most exquisitely personally curated meal I've had in NZ. The service and attention to detail throughout is extraordinary, and it's clearly based on the tastes and interests of a singular mind who is exploring ideas that they like. GET THE DRINKS MATCH - the meal is only half complete without the matching beverages. Best dishes: The Pig Crumpet (cooked in pork fat, topped with pig liver pate and house pancetta), the sourdough with the blue-cheesy 13 month aged butter, the house made chilli liqueur that tastes like distilled capsicum. Lots of interesting drinks - raw and fermenting wines are a favourite - lots of sour and simple flavours. Less salt than I might prefer, less greenery than I might prefer (but it is winter), less acid than I might prefer - but these are MY preference; that's not what we're here to have. We're here for personable chef Ed Verner's preferences, and they are EXCELLENT. Thanks for sharing them with us, Ed!

With one set menu designed for the season and talented chefs using various techniques such as cooking with wood-fire, fermentation, dry-aging and cheese making, your meal at Pasture is one of its kind. The restaurant only seat 6 and takes two seating times at 5:45PM and 8:15PM. Instead of seating at secluded tables hidden in the dining room, you’re in the middle of it all at the Chef’s Counter where you can directly engage with the kitchen. Booking a table pre-COVID has always been a hard task with the weekends being taken up as soon as bookings become available. We managed to get a table as soon as they started taking reservations under level one - Understandable as this award winning restaurant is well praised in the dining community (3 Hats in Cuisine, 2019 Metro Restaurant of the Year,  Best Chef & Fine Dining Restaurant) My meal at Pasture last Sunday was exceptional. We paired our meal with a non-alcoholic pairing and was thrilled at the creative choices of matches of beverage to dish. Each dish is surprising and innovative, creative with attention to detail. Watching the chefs elegantly assemble and prepare your meal right in front of you is a real treat. If you have any dietary requirements, this might not be suitable for you. I haven’t eaten a banana in 20 years and have managed to avoid red meat for the last 6 months. This changed last night and I have no regrets. The set menu also sets you back $250 and the non-alcoholic pairing is another $70 per person. It’s not a cheap meal. Do I love and recommend it? Yes! Would I be back next season when the menu change? When my wallet recovers

Yelp
A unique dining experience. Starters at the boxer counter, then mains in front of the fire. Finish with desserts at a lounge table. Loved the personal attention, great special occasion restaurant

Yelp
The menu changes so I won't go through the dishes (except a little bit) but I'd say their flavor profile is sort of earth and funky, which is something I'm into. Not a ton of brightness going on here, and I think they pull it off well. The silliest part was I saw them carving what looked like pastrami, but that wouldn't seem to fit into a small farm to table restaurant in auckland. Well it was in fact pastrami because the folks there had recently been to NYC and went to Katz's deli and were inspired to make their own. It was excellent. The drink pairings are interesting and worth having, though I kind of wish there was more volume. I wasn't quite able to work up a buzz.

Yelp
Pasture is a place for the soul with food so carefully prepared some ingredients have been in the process for months. This is certainly a restaurant working on par with the slow food movement.

Yelp
In a city with sensational food, Pasture shows New Zealand's bounty in a world class experience. Six diners per seating watch the chef and only two others cook or finish each dish over a wood fire. Waygu with insanely delicious reduction ...House made bread loaf with aged butter ...marinade of raw clams. On and on.. All totally relaxed and friendly and unfussed Worth every moment

Yelp
As a regular restaurant diner in NZ and worldwide I place a lot of importance on the ambience of a restaurant. You know, the welcoming atmosphere and friendliness, etc. My recent experience at Pasture left much to be desired in this area. We were told on arrival by the maitre 'd in a cold and threatening way to keep our voices down [we were not shouting or being overly loud] 'as this was her restaurant'. We complied with this demand [I could not call it a request] but thereafter it seems we were deemed to be undesirables. Even lightly touching the waiter's arm while offering a table side compliment was objectionable. Who are these people! If you are of a gregarious nature and like to enjoy a relaxed atmosphere then I cannot not recommend this restaurant.
