Patagonia is likely the best company on the planet.
Yvon Chouinard is an amazing and inspiring man.
I imagine his wife is just as awesome.
I follow the company, their blog, have friends who photograph for them, and never get too far from my Patagonia wool. Ultralight endurance ankle socks are on right now.
Joel, Rene, and Ruby, have a stack of stuff on hold for me somewhere inside Patagonia Toronto. I'm on Vancouver Island in BC at the moment, that's how awesome the staff is at Patagonia's first Canadian location.
Joel must have spent nearly an hour on the phone with me yesterday, over a few calls, telling me what was on sale, checking sizing, colours and pricing. He even gave me his weight and size and asked if I wanted him to try on the mens stuff I was asking about. I'm sure he'd have rocked the lambswool sweater I'm ordering for myself too. He's just that helpful.
The store manager Rene came on the phone to say hello when he found out I was the one he'd been talking to on Facebook and Twitter, of course we talked about Kerouac and Cardiff.
This service is unheard of in retail. I'm sure the whole team is amazing.
I've been to many of the Patagonia US shops, every one from Seattle to Cardiff on the West Coast, and it's the same in each store. I even called Santa Cruz outlet today, where they went to check unopened boxes for a rolling duffel I'm looking to buy. Kudos to the culture created by the Chouinards and their team.
If you haven't read Yvon's book, Let My People Go Surfing (Toronto? Really? Not Vancouver first?), you should. An excellent book, it will teach even a super fan many things about their personal and corporate environmental initiatives, social commitments, and the tremendous impact Patagonia has had on it's industry, it's competitors (not in the way you might be thinking), and people of many countries around the world.
If you're going to produce goods, consume them, or simply have an interest in good business, start watching Patagonia. A long inspiring and respected brand, their commitment to quality is unmatched. Their humble beginnings are an inspiration to any Entrepreneur, including myself.
Buy something here, if you're going to buy anything at all. Wear it proudly. Smile when you see someone wearing a Better Sweater. They'll smile back.
I bought a new MacBook Pro in November 2009, and dropped my wooden magnet on it that says "The Best things in the world are not things". I loved how symbolic it was, to me at least, that this is what had caused the first dent. Finally I'd found the perfect place for my Live Simply Patagonia sticker. Looking at it on my laptop reminds me everyday of how inspiring the company is, and how important those words are.
I'm a nomad, I travel and work, and have a very great life. My suitcase handle is stuck up, and now I'm getting a Patagonia Freewheeler rolling duffel to replace it, because it's the first suitcase, at 30 years old, that I've ever had to buy. I'll be proud to Freewheel. Can't wait to strap it to the top of a bus in tropical country.
Oh the places you'll go. -- Dr. Seuss.
ps. Toronto? Really?
