Patina Maldives Fari Islands

"Why book Capella Hotels & Resorts has long been associated with expertly curated hospitality. The Singapore-born brand, with resorts in Bangkok, Ubud, and Hanoi, is firmly established as a brand that puts curating bespoke journeys for all its guests at the heart of its ethos. So the pressure is on the shoulders of Patina Maldives, the debut resort from Capella’s new offshoot, Patina Hotels & Resorts. Entering the market as a sophisticated lifestyle brand poised to offer curated experiences to independent minds looking to connect on a deeper level with their location, Patina Maldives is already drawing repeat visits, despite having only opened its doors in May 2021. Location Within a new, manmade quad of islands, Patina is set on the largest of the four Fari Islands. Spread over a sprawling 42 hectares, despite its infancy, the island is lush and verdant, and fringed by a sugary golden beach and lapped by the gentle waters of a crystalline lagoon. As well as housing Patina, the island is home to the Fari Marina Village, a 20-berth marina and social hub where guests can eat and mingle. Guests of both The Ritz-Carlton and Patina have full access to the marina, as will guests of Capella Maldives, which is set to complete the trifecta of resorts in 2023. A mosaic of tree-lined paths guides the way to villas dotted along the sun-drenched shore and set on stilts on a winding wooden walkway out over the gently lapping water. Neutral in palette and contemporary in design, earthy colors and tactile textures are complemented by Arcadian materials that create a dialogue with nature. The bedsheets are all slate grey—an unconventional choice for a luxury resort, but one that adds to the modern feel. The best feature of the one-bedroom sunset overwater villa is the open-air deck, where guests can bask in the sunny rays from their private pool, luxuriate in a sumptuous freestanding tub while bathing to the soundtrack of tumbling waves or curl up with a book in the hammock that swings lazily in the ocean breeze. I delight in doing all three. Food & drink Gastronomy is of great importance to Patina, and the resort’s collection of cherry-picked head chefs pack their unique personality into each menu. At Roots, a signature eatery that will be a fixture at all Patina resorts, chef Derrick Wales—a pioneer in plant-based dining in the Maldives— takes diners on an epicurean adventure across perfectly plated dishes using many ingredients sourced from the island’s duo of blossoming herb and vegetable gardens. A degustation menu begins with a nourishing cauliflower quinoa, continues with artichoke presented a trio of ways, and impressively concludes with a dairy-free cheesecake, which tastes remarkably like the original. Chef Caesar Perez of South American steakhouse Brasa brings the flavors of his upbringing in Mexico and Texas coupled with his experience from stints in Copenhagen and Shanghai to his restaurant’s concise menu in the Fari Marina Village, another intimate space where guests get a front row seat to the culinary action at stools facing the show kitchen. The lobster ceviche with punchy citrus notes is the perfect opening plate, followed by octopus glazed in a sticky char siu. The undeniable star is the Wagyu strip loin, presented perfectly pink in the middle and simply flavored with rock salt and served with crispy truffle fries and a chimichurri. Facilities The roster of activities available to guests reads like a checklist of the ultimate bucket list Maldives experiences, but each with a unique Patina twist. Dolphin spotting is enjoyed from Patina’s showpiece Adastra superyacht, best described as an aquatic Batmobile thanks to its visionary design; guests can enjoy intimate tastings and private dinners in Farine, a cozy all-wooden space that’s been transformed from a bakery into a charcuterie and tasting room perfect for culinary pop-ups; even the traditional overwater spa goes on-land, with low-lying cubic treatment rooms dotted among the lush landscapes. Guests also enjoy unlimited access to the Fari Marina Village, the antithesis of the Maldives’ typical seclusion, designed as a social hub where guests can eat and mingle. There’s a community-focused energy courtesy of a duo of curated fashion boutiques, an art gallery, beach club, and a colorful collection of restaurants and food trucks, each sending a waft of flavorful scents from their kitchen into the crisp air as guests wander through. There’s also Fari Beach Club, which hopes to draw not only guests from the Fari Island resorts, but also those arriving on yachts to the luxurious 20-berth Fari Marina, for days spent sipping crisp glasses of chilled grape under the dappled shade of wooden cabanas that encase a generously sized infinity pool. Eco effort Patina Maldives must be commended for its eco effort. Single-use plastic is almost entirely eliminated: plastic bottles are replaced with reusable ones, and all bathroom amenities are refillable. But beyond this, a duo of continuously expanding organic gardens growing herbs and vegetables produce an array of ingredients used across the resort, and a dedicated marine conservation program works to grow and protect the corals on the house reef. Service The service is standout from start to finish: friendly faces beam and clap as our boat pulls up at the welcome pavilion; at breakfast the berry smoothie I order on our first day arrives moments after we’re seated on the second morning; and there’s already a covered buggy waiting  to escort us back to the villa when a tropical downpour catches us off guard one night. Hassan Shafeeu, our Essentialist (Patina’s answer to private butlers), is available around-the-clock via WhatsApp to arrange dinner reservations, drop off snorkeling kits, and share the best spots for baby shark sightings. He thinks of other thoughtful touches too, like leaving a star-shaped bamboo weave on my pillow one night when stormy clouds roll in and eclipse the twinkling sky. The verdict While Patina may still be writing its story, the first chapter is already riveting. Service is slick, guest rooms are stylish while offering quintessential island luxury, and the multitude of happenings make this island feel like there’s non-stop adventure just waiting for you." - Alice Holtham

7 Great Places to Travel in Asia in 2023

"Last May brought ambitious sustainability, visiting musicians, and dive butlers to the North Malé Atoll. At Patina Maldives, designed by Brazilian architect Marcio Kogan, the 110 beach suites and overwater and beach villas were built with natural materials that blur the lines between inside and out. Adding to the artistic cachet is an installation by American light and space artist James Turrell, a pavilion of vertical wooden slats that frames views of azure Maldives skies. At the solar-powered kids club, Footprints, children can mimic the modular prefab building techniques used to create the resort’s villas by making 3D-printed and laser-cut models from recycled ocean plastic. The staff village, Fari Campus, is located on its own island and was designed to enhance well-being and foster kinship among employees, with ample communal spaces, including a state-of-the-art gym, store, and restaurant." - Kathryn Romeyn

6 New Hotels in Asia Worth Planning a Trip Around

"Located in North Malé Atoll and designed by Marcio Kogan, this resort uses natural materials to blur indoor and outdoor living across 110 beach suites and overwater/beach villas, and includes prominent art installations such as a pavilion of vertical wooden slats by a renowned light-and-space artist. Sustainability and education are emphasized through a solar-powered kids club where children build models from recycled ocean plastic, while staff wellbeing is supported by a dedicated staff-island campus with communal facilities." - Kathryn Romeyn

7 Maldives Resorts That Are Redefining the Islands

"This island getaway for aesthetes is one of the cleverest resorts to open this year—a particular achievement during a pandemic. It's the first of a new progressive brand of hotels from Capella. Patina and the recently opened Ritz-Carlton are also the first hotels built on the man-made Fari Islands, in the North Malé atoll. With space at a premium, artificial isles aren't new in the Maldives, but here serious sustainability efforts and conservation projects go a long way to mitigate the environmental impact of the construction. The resort's 90 pool villas aren't the largest in the Maldives, but they impress in other ways, with glass walls that retract on three sides. In the bathrooms there are exfoliating seaweed soaps from Haeckels, and at bedtime vitamins appear on pillows in lieu of chocolates. The Flow Spa, where the treatment rooms look like sugar cubes tossed into the long grass, offers high-tech therapies—flotation pods, LED-light therapy, Iris sound immersions—alongside rituals like an out-of-body experience in the Watsu pool with Balinese healer Purnomo Diretno. Patina also has eight bars and restaurants, each one exceptional. The Maldives' next generation starts here."

I’ve stayed at several resorts across the Maldives, but this one truly stands in a league of its own. From the moment we arrived, we were treated with the kind of care, warmth, and attention to detail that you simply don’t find everywhere. We chose this resort to celebrate our wedding, and they went above and beyond in every possible way. Every detail was thoughtfully and intentionally planned. The team didn’t just organize a wedding—they created a deeply personal, once-in-a-lifetime experience that exceeded every expectation. It was truly a dream. From the thoughtful touches in our villa to the beautifully customized ceremony, it was clear that every member of the staff genuinely cared about making our day unforgettable. I’ve seen many breathtaking settings in the Maldives, but what made this place unforgettable wasn’t just the natural beauty—it was the people who worked there. The level of service, the joy they brought to every interaction, and the way they made us feel like family turned a beautiful trip into one of the most meaningful moments of our lives. Everything about it—the setting, the service, the heart behind it all—made it perfect. If you’re considering this hotel for a wedding or any kind of celebration, don’t hesitate to visit Patina. It was the best decision we ever made and we will be back!!

We had an incredible 4 days for a friend's milestone Birthday celebration! ||The overwater villas are incredibly spacious and maintained beautifully. We were in room 235 so were able to swim straight out to the house reef where tropical fish, reef sharks and colourful coral whilst snorkelling. As there are 13 restaurants on the island you have plenty of variety and it never felt crowded at meal times. The flavours at Wok Society were a standout! ||It's great that the resort is only a 50 min speedboat ride from the airport (unlike other resorts which you need to take a seaplane to during the daylight, so sometimes means 1 night spent in Male), so this resort is perfect if you international flight arrives later. We were lucky enough to spot dolphins on the speedboat transfer too! ||Don't miss the sunset sailing, the free-flow ice cream truck, the coral & ceramic conservation workshop and sound bath session - all wonderfully memorable. It's a big island, so if you can ride a bike, that's helpful, otherwise buggy's can easily be called. A special mention to Ruslan, our concierge for all things on the island, for taking outstanding care of us. ||A trip of a lifetime - don't hesitate, just book it!!!

I visited Patina Maldives in June for a girls’ getaway, and we spent three unforgettable nights in paradise. We stayed in the stunning 2-bedroom water villa — spacious, luxurious, and thoughtfully designed, with plenty of closet and bathroom space for all of us. As someone who lives in Tokyo and is quite selective about food, I was genuinely impressed by the exceptional dining throughout our stay.||We made the most of the resort’s unique offerings, including a deeply relaxing Sound Healing session and a ceramic coral workshop with Nihan, the local marine biologist. If you love arts and crafts, I highly recommend joining that workshop — it was such a meaningful and fun experience!||A special shoutout to Ruslan (or "Rusii"), our incredible essentialist. He was beyond helpful, attentive, caring, and reliable — truly one of the highlights of our trip. Even though our group was spread across three different villas, Rusii and his team made sure we were always taken care of, from late nights to early mornings.||Overall, I highly, highly recommend Patina Maldives. Every detail was exceptional, and I can’t wait to return.

We recently celebrated my daughter’s wedding at Patina with just our families, and the experience was truly beyond our expectations. Despite it being monsoon season, the team had thoughtful and seamless backup plans for every event, ensuring everything went smoothly no matter the weather.||||The staff was exceptional—gracious, accommodating, professional, and genuinely warm. It was, without a doubt, the best service we’ve ever experienced. The cuisine, the stunning facilities, and the range of activities available were equally impressive and set a new standard for us.||||I wholeheartedly recommend Patina for couples, families, special events, or even corporate gatherings. It’s a remarkable destination that delivers excellence on every level.

Patina Maldives is unlike any other resort in the Maldives—it’s where contemporary design, conscious living, and natural beauty come together effortlessly. From the moment you arrive, everything is seamless. The architecture is minimalist yet warm, blending into the island’s natural landscape without overpowering it. The villas are stunning—spacious, beautifully designed, and thoughtfully appointed. Every detail is intentional, from the soft lighting to the unobstructed views of the ocean or lush garden. Service is exceptional—genuine, attentive, and never intrusive. The staff make you feel like more than just a guest; they remember your preferences and go above and beyond without being asked. This is not just a place to escape—it’s a place to reconnect, slow down, and be inspired. The staff here is amazing !! Russi, Ronnie and the team are fantastic. We should have checked the price for the spa, when the bill came, we had to do a double take because of the unexpected price, we personally felt the price wasn’t worth it, but other than that, we would love to be back!

Our stay at Patina Maldives was truly exceptional. From the moment we arrived, the staff impressed us with their warm, professional, and attentive service. They consistently anticipated our needs without being intrusive, creating a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere throughout our stay.||The resort is beautifully designed, combining modern architecture with the natural beauty of the island. Every detail is carefully thought out, and the entire property is maintained to the highest standard.||There is a wide variety of excursions and activities available – from water sports to wellness programs and cultural experiences. Whether you want to stay active or simply unwind, there’s something for everyone.||What really stood out was the way the team handled individual requests – no matter what we asked for, everything was made possible without hesitation. That level of flexibility and guest focus truly elevated the experience.||We felt completely at ease and well taken care of, and we’re already looking forward to coming back.||An easy 5-star+ recommendation.

Best Place Ever! I’m honestly in love with Patina. The resort is stunning, the design is beautiful, and everything feels so thoughtfully done and what really made the experience so special was the staff. Everyone was incredibly kind, warm and attentive in a way that felt so genuine. What also made this exceptional was the incredible support from our essentialist Safa. From the moment we arrived, she went above and beyond to ensure every detail was perfect. Her thoughtful planning, warm energy, and genuine care added a personal touch that took our trip to the next level. We felt completely taken care of, and it made all the difference. Thank you, Safa, for making our stay so special! And thanks Patina for such an unforgettable time. I’m already dreaming of coming back!
