Montreal’s Chinatown Seeking $1 Million in Relief to Overcome COVID-19 Downturn | Eater Montreal

"A Hong Kong-style bakery in Chinatown, Patisserie Coco has been hit hard by the pandemic; owner Paul Li told CTV News that they cut more than half of their staff and lost somewhere from 70 to 80 percent of their sales." - Valerie Silva

Google
CoCo Bakery (Chinatown) This place is chock-full of Asian baked delights. If you think there’s only one way to do a coconut bun, think again — they’ve got every kind imaginable here. Fillings range from fruit to whipped cream, custard, and who knows what else — all fresh and tempting. You grab a tray, pick your favourites, and bring them to the till where they package everything up neatly. Prices are extremely fair for what you get. A must-stop in Chinatown — awesome spot.

Stopped by Pâtisserie Coco for some takeaway pastries and everything we tried was delicious. You can tell they put care into what they make. The shop has a warm, inviting feel, and the staff were very helpful and welcoming, which made the visit even nicer. Definitely worth a stop if you’re in the area and craving something sweet.

Google
This is a hidden gem in Chinatown, their sweets are extremely delicious and fresh. Staff not too friendly. I recommend the egg tart

I bought four cakes and all of them were completely spoiled. The filling was watery, the mille-crêpe layers were tough, and the fruit had already gone bad. I wouldn’t recommend buying any of their cream cakes.

Google
Food: 3/5 - I bought 3 assorted buns and pastries - slice of cake, BBQ pork bun and matcha cake slice. None of them wowed me. Lacked flavor. Maybe cuz I bake my own stuff a lot. I also bought a mango iced tea on the other side of the store. They offer basic tea or milk teas. I had a mango tea with coconut jelly with no sugar or ice. Service: 4/5 - good service overall Atmosphere: 4/5 - clean and nice premise

I love this little place for a quick and cost effective snack or dessert. I dont love the self service thing to pick the food out of the displays but the vibe inside is fun and cute. I have never had an item at coco I hated. I love the garlic cheese bread and the strawberry and cream sweet bun also the ones with hotdogs are a total guilty pleasure. Paired with a delicious Bubble Tea. How can you go wrong?

Google
The food was really delicious and fresh out of the oven. The quality was amazing. The portion of the drinks were really big. Its just that the drinks were a little too sweet imo. But everyone was amazing. Love the experience!!

Yuni K.

Google
It was a nice and clean bakery. What we chose was good, but not surprisingly great. Still, if you're looking for sweet and soft bread, it's definitely a good place to try.

Yelp
I usually come here to get pastries and baked goods. But this last time we stopped for a drink. They have a good selection of teas, bubble teas and tapioca drinks. The lady making the drink was very friendly and quick. Nice stop in Chinatown for a cold beverage.
google avatar

Yelp
A pastry and tea drink shop, split in half. When you first enter, you get the drink shop from milk tea to boba, and the other side is for bake goods & pastries. A small but pretty busy shop. Prices were reasonable. Drinks were made pretty quickly despite the being busy

Yelp
We stopped by this pastry shop in Chinatown since it was right at the corner as we came in. The displays had a wide variety of pastries, which immediately caught our attention. There's also a boba shop next door, though we weren't sure if they used fresh ingredients or powder mixes, so we didn't try it. Prices looked fairly average. We ended up picking a couple of pastries. Payment by credit card was no problem, and the staff were friendly. Checkout was quick and efficient, making the overall experience smooth. The Portuguese tart aka nata was pretty good with crispy shell. However, the filling wasn't creamy and a tad sweet.

Yelp
As a first time visitor I am impressed with all the options they have available! Compared to places like tous les jour and Paris baguette this place I would argue actually offers Asian pastries with a French twist. I got a whole haul of goodies including the chicken floss cheese, red bean mochi, cheese garlic bread, beef puff, and pork puff. Items are also priced well in my opinion. There were quite a few of bit of items that were sold out when I arrived around 7:30, so I would recommend going earlier in the day if you're on the hunt for something in particular. They also have a drink menu available to order from.

Yelp
Great baked goods, fast service, I always go there when I'm in Montreal. The pastries are always well presented and the shop is clean and well lit.

Yelp
Very clean Asian bakery in Montreal's Chinatown! They were open on Christmas Day 2023. Lots of selection, including Taiwanese bolo bread, sesame swirl bun, custard tarts, green tea sponge cake, taro sponge cake wrapped in thin cheese pastry, thin sponge cake folded with pork sung filling! An Asian bakery that has taro, sesame AND green tea flavors is comprehensive in my book! Staff was friendly and helpful. They take credit cards, even AMEX.
google avatar

Yelp
So many options!! Everything fresh and delicious. Grab a tray and tongs to put all your items on and they ring you up at the counter.

Yelp
In Montreal, this Chinese bakery really caught my eye! The bake shop is visually appealing on the outside and even more so when you step in. The establishment looked clean and their baked goods are well organized. The pastries are kept in these glass pull out draws and I find that to be more sanitary. Also the savory pastries such as roast pork buns, hot dog buns etc..are in warming cases with small doors that you pull open. You will immediately see trays and paper sheets to line them with, along with individual tongs so you can self serve. The breads and some specialty items out are all individually wrapped. I feel that they are mindful of not having their freshly made baked goods out in the open exposing them to germs. There are so so many sweet as well as savory pastries and breads to choose from. They offer both traditional baked goods as well as some with a so called fusion or modern twist. There is also a display case with a nice selection of cakes by the front counter. Oh and did I mention that you can also get fruity as well as a good variety of boba specialty drinks, wow! The drink counter is located right by the entrance as you walk in. On my tray, I had some warm roast pork buns, hot dog buns, an egg tart, and a cream bun just to name a few. Each pastry was substantial in size and with my tongs I could feel just how soft and fresh everything was. I liked how quickly the line moved as you approached the counter to pay. They also ask you, if you want your baked goods boxed or individually bagged which is really nice. Ordering your fruity and or boba drinks can be confusing at the pastry checkout counter. Especially as they have a drink counter where you place your order as well as pick up as you watch it being made. The bakery's modern feel and huge variety will have you indecisive as everything looks delicious! I was there two days in a row and still couldn't get enough!

Yelp
Very fresh pastries and Asian style breads. We got the egg tart literally fresh out the oven, it was incredibly buttery and soft. Can get pretty crowded especially on the weekends, the bubble tea section seems especially popular but we did not try it. Prices are generally in line with the area, around $2-4 per pastry.

Yelp
Pastries were delicious, fresh, and the service was great, and quick. All the pastries look amazing and the space is clean in organized and a nice change of pace from the rest of Chinatown. Overall, great experience.

Yelp
I'm visiting Montreal and staying at a near by hotel. We wanted Asian pastries and this was one of two places we went to...they are about a hundred feet apart from each other. We bought some roast pork buns and coconut cream buns...total of 4. We are a party of 4 who were at the store. When you walk in, you grab a tray, put lining paper on it, grab some tongs and pick what you want and bring it to the counter. When we went to pay, the old man at the counter looked down at my tray of 4 items, then looked at the 4 of us (as if he was counting how many of us there were)...then looked at the tray and proceeded to shrug and shake his head horizontally. I mean, WTF was he meaning by that? Am I not buying enough food to warrant my visit? Is there a minimum or something? It's none of his business but I was trying to do a comparison with the Harmonie pastry shop that's very close by. This attitude of his really put me off, but I still went back to the same pastry shop the next day as we couldn't find pork buns at the other place around this time of day. The old lady that helped us was so much nicer! Oh, we also bought a drink on the way out and the service there was just fine too. The food looks great at this place. All of it is in a drawer with automatic door to minimize people breathing all of the food. Once you pull out the tray, the see-through display opens so that you can use your tongs to grab the piece you want. I really like this setup. The store itself is setup in a way where you kind of walk around a circle to keep traffic flowing in a uniform matter. I just wish the old man was as thoughtful as the design of the place. Presentation and comfort in shopping is a 4/5 Food selection and quality is a 4/5 Service is a 1/5 due to that one experience and really uncalled for! Pricing was about 3.50 per piece before taxes/fees.

Yelp
If you ever had 85 degrees, then this place will disappoint you. They are not fresh - they tasted a day old. The process is the same as 85 degrees where you have to take a tray and a tong and you grab the pastries you want and pay at the counter. There is no comparison. 85 degrees is still the best

Yelp
I wanted a light, quick lunch and had to try Pâtisserie Coco before leaving Montreal. I got one hot dog roll and one beef chili roll, and they absolutely melt in your mouth. The rolls are so fluffy, with just the right hint of sweetness. I especially liked the beef chili roll. The wide variety of pastries is amazing and each one is a work of art.
google avatar

Meg A.

Yelp
I think this might be owned by the same owners as Patisserie Harmonie on the same block, with a decor that will attract the Instagrammers. The pastries and buns were very similar, like, identically. All delicious and priced fairly. I'd be curious to know exact cost comparisons, should someone with more regularity care to investigate. The boba tea is fantastic.
google avatar

Namron L.

Yelp
Spacious, bright Chinese bakery with a few indoor seats at the counter. Had the Hong Kong egg tart, beef curry puff, cream puff, durian mochi, pineapple bun, mango cake roll - all are good. Nice variety of breads & baked goods. Packaged well in box & bag.
google avatar

Alex L.

Yelp
Great little bakery in Chinatown with tons of little goodies. I stopped in and got a little piece of dough with bacon and leeks, while my partner grabbed a boba tea. Everything was quick and easy and the service was great. Credit cards accepted with no minimums, which is appreciated (especially since in other parts of Montreal I couldn't find a convenience store that would sell me stuff with a credit card without ridiculous minimums). All in all, if you're looking for delicious pastries/stuffed dough, boba, and other things that are fresh, fresh, fresh -- definitely make your way here for the baked buns and more!
google avatar

Kim L.

Yelp
This is THE bakery to go to in Chinatown! They have some traditional Chinese goodies and modern twists. We bought 42CAD worth of pastries (around 31USD) and they were worth every cent. My current favorites have to have been this bread bun that was filled with a rich cocoa cream and crystal-type boba - normally the expectation is a low filling to bread ratio but the amount of filling was beyond expectations! Another favorite was a flaky pastry flower that was filled with red bean paste that was as incredible as it was dense and not too sweet like most read bean fills tend to be. It's primarily a self service patisserie, with a few higher end cakes and pastries that do require a request as they're behind the counter. All self-service pastries were 3-5CAD, so very reasonably priced. You can also get specialty bread loaves for around 7-10CAD. All pastries are carefully paper bagged or cardboard boxed upon request. The inside was also very clean, modern, and organized. Highly recommend if you're looking for a cheap patisserie that hosts some Chinese specialty flavors!

Yelp
Reminds me of San Francisco. Love walking around to see what they have and just get what I want. Their pastry are good. I went here twice to buy some for family we were visiting. we also got some for when we left so we can have something to eat on the plane. They have boba there as well. I would say try this place, you will like everything you get, nothing you won't like.
google avatar

Marni M.

Yelp
Came here to try a melted custard bun which I ended up having the next day. I thought that because the bakery was so full that the items had to be fresh and delicious. Since I ended up eating it the next day, I'm not sure if it was more stale than it would have been but I was not impressed. It was dry with barely any filling. Personally, I would not get it again but might try other items from their menu. Staff were patient and efficient though!
google avatar

Kellie R.

Yelp
I absolutely love this bakery! It's conveniently located right in Chinatown so be prepared to bring back lots of goodies. I love that it's do-it-yourself. You grab a tray and utensils and pick out your own sweet treats or savory bites. It usually gets busy towards the end of the day so there aren't as many options but the employees are hard at work preparing freshly baked goods throughout the day. I find the prices to be reasonable and tend to get quite a variety of treats to bring back to the hotel. They stay fresh for a few days which is also nice. I'd give 5 stars but it gets super busy inside with lines going outside. People can get a little impatient while you're making choices to purchase. It would be great if they could expand the business and make a larger pastry shop because they are truly a Chinatown gem. Oh! Do order the Peach bubble tea! It's really good.

Yelp
Had a taro boba and it was not good at all. Was good that it had a spot for us to sit.

Yelp
These pastries and baked goods are so yummy. This reminds me of bakeries I've been to in Boston. The sesame pastry is so soft, moist, and not too sweet. My grandma would love this - she loves breads and baked goods but ones that are not overpoweringly sweet. The mango pastry is also a hit! It had just the right amount of filling. The service line goes very fast and the environment is clean and bright. Overall, I would definitely go here again. In my opinion, this bakery is the best one in Chinatown Montreal!
google avatar

Yelp
I was craving a pineapple bun when visiting Montreal so stopped by here to check it out. Let's just say the pineapple bun is as good or better than any I've had in the San Francisco Bay Area. 10/10, would pineapple bun here again. I also tried the Hokkaido bun, which was also quite solid. Some other buns were tried by my traveling companions and let's just say everyone had a good time. The clientele was the most diverse I've ever seen in an Asian bakery, which I thought was amazing. It's nice to see people from all backgrounds enjoying delicious buns! :) Business also seemed to be booming with a lot of shoppers. Service was quick and efficient. I will definitely return here the next time I am in Montreal.

Yelp
Excellent place to grab some pastries in Chinatown! Great selection, and everything we tried was fresh and tasty. The only mark against it is that people don't know how to rotate through it, so there was a lot more standing and waiting for people to figure out what they wanted than there should be. Still, totally worth it to get some sweets!
google avatar

Sebastien L.

Yelp
Been there more then once while going for a walk thru Chinatown and always got excellent service with delicious and flavorful fresh pastries . Definitely would recommand this place in this area
google avatar

Yelp
A cute Chinese bakery with lots of delicious offerings but at a more expensive price point. Came by Coco in the afternoon and it was packed with lots of people grabbing trays and tongs to purchase their goodies. I got to try their durian mochi, BBQ pork bun, and red bean coconut rice cake. The durian mochi was ok, had better mochi- this mochi felt too soft and I almost feared my teeth were going to slide against each other. As a durian lover, this one didn't satisfy my craving. The BBQ pork bun was delicious and the bun to meat ratio was on point. The red bean coconut rice cake was also pretty good, not too sweet and I loved how chewy the rice cake was. Coco is definitely more expensive than other Chinese bakeries I've tried and for the quality, I wouldn't say it's justified. However their wide range of desserts and delicacies are worth trying.
google avatar

Andy R.

Yelp
Incredible options. You'll wish you could do the whole loop twice (hint: make note of things you *might* want and ask the staff to go "back" to get you one of you don't put it on your tray). The line of customers fills the store, but it moves quickly and gives you time to look at everything. Custards are delicious, coconut crème pastries are not too sweet. Just excellent!

Yelp
HIDDEN GEM! This Chinese bakery is DA BOMB! So cute. Sooooo many delectable bakery items to choose from! We had just finished a late lunch on a Monday at Nouilles de Lan Zhou - Noodle Shop (SO GOOD, AUTHENTIC HANDMADE CHINESE NOODLES! Highly recommend!). You would think after a HUGE bowl of noodles there would be no room left in the belly for ANYTHING ELSE. Thing is - we just needed a little sweet-ish something something to top off the meal. Cleanse the palette a bit, you know? Coco is THAT place. We stumbled upon it as we left the noodle shop heading to St. Catherine Street for an afternoon of shopping. It reminded me of the typical Asian bakeries in Seoul or Tokyo (and though I've.never been to China before, of course it must feel like you've been transported there too). Not your typical American bakery with heavy, overly- sweet-and-sugary, too-dense pastries and cakes. What you'll find here are just-sweet-enough (and some savory) pastries, mochi, Chinese donuts, red bean paste items and other goodies - almost too many to have to choose from! #headspinninglol You grab a tray, a pair of tongs and go to town. Sort of like those weigh-your-own, self serve candy shops. Or the bulk food aisle at the grocery store. Peruse the bakery cases and individually wrapped goodies, put what you want to buy on the tray. Bring the tray with your items up to the front cashiers. They will take your items and place them in individual to-go bags. Prices are SUPER reasonable. The pastries and baked goods are fresh and delicious. Had we happened upon Coco earlier in our weeklong visit, we would have been here multiple times - maybe even daily for a sweets nightcap. ANYTHING HERE WOULD GO GREAT WITH A LATTE (and frankly way tastier and less $$ than the pastries and food items the local coffee shops offer). So - maybe it's good we discovered this place on our last day of the trip - else we would have severely expanded our waistlines lol. But then again, sad that we didn't have the opportunity to try more goodies during our visit especially given that this place was steps away from our hotel. Definitely worth a pop-in!
google avatar

Kathy L.

Yelp
Genuinely the best Chinese bakery I've ever been in. I think the pictures of the pastries speak for themselves, and they taste even better than they look. I was absolutely star struck at the sheer diversity of options laid out in this store -- I had to fight to withhold myself from buying one of everything. Everything was super reasonably priced and tasted SO delicious. The perfect amount of sweetness with so much freshness in each bite all while looking picture perfect. My family bought some parties to go for a quick breakfast/snack and they still tasted absolutely delicious. An absolute must stop in Montreal for sure!! I WILL BE BACK FOR MORE.

Yelp
Is this place associated with Cocobun? I don't know! This location is not listed as a location on the Cocobun website, so I'm thinking it's an independent just with a similar name. It doesn't have its own website. However, the offerings are similar to Cocobun, which are also similar to Patisserie Harmonie, so yeah, I still don't know, lol. Anyway, I have always been nonplussed by Cocobun, so I tried Coco under the impression that it was a different bakery. After trying their crusted custard bun $1.75, I would say that taste wise the bakeries are similar but the bun that I got was much fresher, so tasted better in that regard. The bakery was very busy and so the turnover was high. Staff were constantly putting out freshly baked buns. The top of the bun was crunchy like a cookie and the actual bun was soft and chewy. The custard was a bit too sweet and not rich or creamy, but more starchy. I liked the bun, the filling not that much. The bakery was well lit and looked clean. The cashier was an odd combination of friendly yet loud and abrupt in manner of speech. Maybe that's just the way she talks, lol. This bakery is in Chinatown right at the corner of St. Laurent and de la Gauchetiere. There were buskers in front of it when I went and a whole crowd of people watching the buskers and blocking the entrance.

Issan Z.

Yelp
We waited a long time for this place to open - it's finally here!! Not that it's the first Coco pastry shop in town, or the only Chinese bakery in the street for that matter... Still, the brand new interior and shiny counters are quite attractive compared to the other older shops on de la Gauchetière. The fresh pastries line the brightly lit windows, and hints of a busy kitchen can be seen from the counter. The pastry shelves open automatically as you pull them out, which is a nice touch. A perk compared to Pâtisserie Harmonie is the seating area at the entrance. The pastries themselves are nothing special compared to the average Chinese bakery. They're good, but not better or different. Prices are comparable too. Probably still strong competition for the other shops in the area!
google avatar

Brad S.

Yelp
I had a delicious chicken teriyaki sweet bun. It was fresh and warm and had my mouth dance with joy and left me so happy on the inside. Cost $2.50 for one, a great inexpensive snack or two could be lunch. I'll definitely be back! (Likely tomorrow tbh)
google avatar

Nico Samneil S.

Yelp
Bakery at the side with milktea shop on the other. I see people lining up while on the bakery but not much on the milktea, milktea tastes fair. They dont ask you for level of sweetness. No parking area. Space is tight. Barside table only for people who wants dinein. They have minimum $5 for creditcard use. Accepts major creditcards.
google avatar

Cowcow Z.

Yelp
Strictly for the bubble tea section. I ordered aloe Vera as my topping and they gave me lychee jelly. When I told the girl working, she said "it's the same thing"-- I've worked at bubble tea places and order bubble tea every other day. It is NOT the same thing. Do a quick google, aloe and lychee aren't even the same fruit or plant. They look, taste and are different things. I insisted I ordered aloe and she just kept saying "it's the same." Service as terrible. Drink was ok

Yelp
This bakery is outstanding. It is equally as good as Patisserie Harmonie which is just on the other end of the block in Chinatown. I have tried many Chinese bakeries from East Coast to West Coast and I have to say that the ones here are among the best I've had all over - this means a lot. The baked buns appear fresh, very generously sized for the price (generally between $2-3), and full of flavour without tasting heavy or overbearing. We tried the sweet buns as well as savory / meat-filled and they are all amazing. You will feel full and satisfied. I can't wait for my next trip to Montreal so I can come to Coco again!
google avatar

Aurora F.

Yelp
Stopped here to try out some pastries...did not disappoint!!! The savory pastries (pork bun. Hot dog and beef) were absolutely delicious. The dough is so soft and fresh! The same goes for the sweet ones. I got a vanilla cream bun and it was yummy. Not too sweet. The chocolate chip cookies were the absolute best. Definitely recommend!
google avatar

M A.

Yelp
Delicious pastries. Huge selection. Pricing is a little on the expensive side but the place is very popular. Stuck with the sweet pastries and will try the savory ones next time. It gets so crowded and the lines are long but they do move at a decent pace.

S L.

Yelp
Nice little bakery. This was situated at the entrance of a tiny Asian food area. Disappointed with the Bubble Tea (have had Bubble Teas in San Francisco which were always delicious). We went to a different Bubble Tea place, a few doors down. Better. Most of the buns and pastries were Asian, and not familiar to us, though they may be of great quality to discerning Asian clients. There are other patisseries if you are looking for French pastries...

Hanna M.

Yelp
Absolutely delicious options. We tried mochi, egg tarts, and one of their coconut buns and all were excellent.
google avatar

Harry E.

Yelp
google avatar

Grace L.

Yelp
Great pastries! Egg tart crust is flaky and filling is not sweet, which I like. Durian mochi is delicious too. I am familiar with the taste of durian so it's not weird to me (I know others may beg to differ). The staff is friendly. The place is clean. Parking is not convenient though. I would definitely come back with revenge...lol. I will try everything until I pass out .
google avatar

Dy M.

Yelp
The egg tarts and buns smell and taste delicious! They take credit card which is a plus in Chinatown where cash is king! I prefer the pie crust egg tarts more but these will do!

T T.

Yelp
Amazing. The best, freshest pastries I've ever had. And great service. We made it there twice but we should have went every day while we were visiting Montreal. Can't wait to go back someday.

Tom N.

Yelp
This is a GREAT Asian bakery. They bake everything fresh on premise and many, many options. Very convenient with using a tray and tong to pick up whatever you wish. Line is long as people linger as they don't know what to pick. We picked up a number of pastries including coconut twist, some sesame balls, tart, bread... All under $C 30 (less than 20 USDs). Wonderful and fresh. Highly recommended.

Zhen O.

Yelp
The meat floss cake gave me a bad stomachache. Other than that, all the other buns were nice
google avatar

Jasmine N.

Yelp
What a cute little place in the middle of Chinatown. Saw the line was out the door was was intrigued of what was going on. Ordered the most popular drink on the menu (original milk tea) and wasn't disappointed. The bubble tea was well made but not really mindblowing amazing. Great if you want a boba fix. The bakery is worth going inside. Very clean store but very limited seating. Great prices and tasty pastries! (egg tart & meat buns in the heated section were the best!!)
google avatar

Annie Z.

Yelp
Had the special fruit juice, tasted very fresh and loved the fruit pieces. Would recommend getting!

Yelp
Stopped here after dinner wanting some treats and walking around we ran across this shop. It's in a cute part of Chinatown and has a ton of great options. We got a variety of things to try; an egg tart (not my fave), an eclair (yummy!), donut on a stick and others. We snacked on a few things walking around but had to wait on forks for others! Try this place out if you can! Nothing like experiencing the fun food Montreal has to offer.

Yelp
Oh my goodness I found pastry heaven in Chinatown! Bought a ton of goodies here and everything was delicious (not too sweet) and super duper light and airy. Anything you choose you can't go wrong. Enjoy with a nice cup of coffee. Be sure to make a stop here.
