Hungarian Chimney Cake Bakery Ol’ Sweet Pastry to Open in Montreal’s Plateau | Eater Montreal

"After years of doling out kürtőskalács at festivals and selling online, David Sebestyen has opened a standalone storefront, Ol’ Sweet Pastry, on Rachel Street (open Wednesday to Sunday at 767 Rachel East). Drawing on a family recipe he and his mother and grandmother perfected over six months, he makes chimney cakes from a sweet, lemony, bread-like dough spiralled on a wooden stick, left to rise, dusted with sugar, and baked until the surrounding sugar caramelizes into a crunchy, sticky shell; the interior stays soft and fluffy and can be eaten plain or filled. In warmer months the shop offers Nutella, strawberries, and ice cream in a conical variation so fillings don’t slip out, while in winter it serves hot, pie-like fruit fillings topped with whipped cream — an offering Sebestyen says he thinks they are probably the only ones doing. Sebestyen started the business after returning to Transylvania and realizing the street-dessert tradition was largely unknown in Montreal; having moved from festival tents and pandemic-era deliveries out of a Sainte-Thérèse commercial kitchen, he hopes the Plateau location will introduce chimney cake to a broader Montreal audience beyond the Romanian and Hungarian customers who made up roughly 90 percent of his early clientele." - Valerie Silva

A wonderful experience. Great food (we tried the cinnamon sugar and the wild berry ice cream, with local Coaticook ice cream), wonderful service (friendly, professional, helpful in explaining their offerings), clean and terrific background music that was not at all too loud (Motown hits, Bryan Adams...). As a local, it was our first try and we will definitely be going back.

First and not last time! Deliciousness and not too sweet. Must try the pistachio covered cone😋Service was not too long just about 10 mins. Will definitely come back to try the ice cream filled cones!

Deeeelicious desserts! Two friends & I sat outside enjoying our tasty treats. Apparently I was a public ad as people walking by all looked at me eat & one person came back to ask where the pastry was from & then walked with his partner to the shop! I finished the rest of my roasted almond with tea. A must try!

These Hungarian chimneys are some of the best I have ever had. Super warm and made fresh right in front of you. The owner and cashier were helpful with their explanations of the flavours and the combinations that would pair well together. She recommended the pistachio pieces on the outside as opposed to the sugar option because the pistachio spread was already very sweet. I absolutely loved these and can’t wait to go back.

I stopped by Ol’ Sweet this past July with my friend Hady after a picnic in Parc La Fontaine, and it was the perfect sweet detour. This bakery is all about Hungarian chimney cakes (kürtőskalács), always baked fresh to order so you get that golden caramelized crust and soft fluffy inside. Walking in felt cozy and nostalgic, with old school music like La Vie en Rose playing and David, the owner, greeting us with such warmth. He told us Ol’ Sweet has been open for four years, though before that they built their name at festivals and events around the city. We went classic with our order and loved how each one is made freshly in front of you and doesn’t need much topping to shine. The menu also has fun spreads, fruit, or ice cream for anyone who wants add a little extra pizazz . Bonus: when there is enough extra dough it’s put on the Too Good To Go app, which makes grabbing a treat at the end of the day both delicious and eco-friendly. Not a collab, just a happy foodie sharing a Montréal gem. ✨ I spotlight my favorite local finds on TikTok @foxy.appetite and IG @foxyappetite. Come hang out!

Pâtisserie Ol' Sweet is easily one of the most memorable dessert spots I’ve come across. Their specialty—kürtőskalács, or chimney cakes—is a must-try: freshly baked, perfectly crisp, and filled with creative toppings that make each bite unforgettable. Parking can be a bit tricky, and seating is limited, so it’s not ideal for lingering. But if you're looking for something unique and delicious, this place absolutely delivers. Great for a quick treat or impressing out-of-town guests with something they’ve probably never had before.

The treat you’ll keep coming back for 😍 Ever tried Kürtöskalács? 🍰✨ This traditional Hungarian chimney cake originally from Transylvania is crispy on the outside, soft and airy on the inside, and coated with your choice of sweet toppings. Whether you’re into classic cinnamon sugar or feeling adventurous with chocolate, Ol’ Sweet is the only pastry shop serving Kürtöskalács not just in Montreal, but in Quebec! 😍 It is freshly baked, and a dessert experience you can’t miss. Plus, the heavenly smell of these cakes baking will pull you right in 🤤

Overpriced but good. Maybe the cone buns are fine, idk didn’t try, but the classic ones feel too empty for the price, maybe add more paste or insert additional rod of dough inside the hole idk 😜
