New Orleans Area Restaurants With Gorgeous Views | Eater New Orleans

"This 270-seat restaurant on the Mandeville lakefront is a warren of porches, decks, and bars in a raised complex of 19th-century buildings — all with terrific water views. Chef Pat Gallagher’s Pat’s Rest A While — named for the original inn on the site — offers a vast menu that spans po’ boys and salads to cedar plank gulf fish, marinated ribeye, and an outstanding burger." - Beth D’Addono

Google
Super nice place, food was good not great, well mine wasn’t. Buddy had the french dip sandwich and he loved it, I had cedar plank fish which was a LITTLE over cooked but still flavorful and tasty. Waitress was so awesome! Oysters were on point, I will go back cuse they had a nice menu!

Google
This place is a GEM. My only bad take is for whatever reason i was given a receipt with a total on it, then after I gave them my card there was a service fee. I dont like being blindsided. I dont care if its $ or $100. Anyway the atmosphere is amazing and across from the water. The history rich hotel turned restaurant from the 1800s is just breathtaking. The menu is small but precise. Everything on the menu is extremely tasteful! My wife and kids really enjoyed the time. The service was great and the staff was friendly. All the bartenders are awesome! There are plenty TVs. This is a place for all types of gatherings. Upstairs and downstairs bars. Indoor and outdoor seating. I'm sure its usually busy but today we had no wait and we seated and server prompt. In all other thansome small things that im picky about this was an enjoyable outing.

Sitting upstairs outdoors on the patio overlooking the lake and beautiful live oaks, wow. Sets the mood for a great afternoon dinner with friends. Everything we ordered was great, Oysters were chargrilled we had 3 dozen for the table. Onion rings were so good, thin and crispy. I ordered the Salmon, another ordered the steak, gumbo and several other entrees were ordered for our table all were great.

Google
The weather was absolutely perfect for outdoor dining so we chose to opt for the covered porch area. The outside layout is well throughout with a nice view of Lake Pontchartrain. Our server was polite and friendly. The fried shrimp and catfish platter was delicious! I loved the hush puppies and coleslaw as well. We also ordered the frog legs, fried oyster and shrimp platter and the beet salad. I would recommend giving any of those dishes a try. It was such a nice experience that I definitely plan on eating there again.

Google
Such a great afternoon at Pat’s! Best onion rings ever! My husband thoroughly enjoyed the shrimp only. Said it was the best ever and he is picky. And the pompano was excellent. Our server, Maddie, was fantastic, making great recommendations and conversation. Could not have asked for better food and service!

Google
It was my first time eating at Pats. The food, atmosphere and service were all very good. I had the cedar plank fish and my wife had the French dip. Our friends both had the hanger steak. We will definitely go back. It did get a little crowded, so I would suggest making reservations.

Google
Celebrated a recent anniversary at Pat's. Reservations were easy to make online. Our table was ready upon arrival. A nice note congratulaing us was on the table. Service was excellent. Food was great. Drinks were well made. The outside bar is nice. The wait staff is efficient and prices are reasonable.

We had a good experience. We went here for Valentine's Day and chose to use the special menu so I'm not sure if this review will be representative of this restaurant as a typical experience. We started with bacon wrapped shrimp. It came with a ranch-like sauce. Not sure if this was the best flavor combination but this was fairly good. Then we had gumbo and corn & shrimp bisque. They were both tasty, though I would have liked some seafood pieces in the gumbo. It did have a good dark roux. My wife had the petite filet medium rare. It was the proper temperature and had a good char. It came with seasoned potatoes and green beans with bacon. These were very nice sides. I had the Tuna Two Ways. Both tunas were excellent. One had like a peppercorn outside and the other like a batter friend sushi and not overcooked. It came with a soy based sauce and a horseradish (or maybe wasabi, think strong nasal passage clearing) based sauce. We finished with dark chocolate covered strawberries with (probably raspberry) sauce. As far as this goes, this was some of the best I've had. The service was fairly good. The servers were well dressed and professional. We were not rushed as we were there close to 2 hours. I don't give away 5 star reviews easily, but this place could possibly earn it after another visit.

Yelp
We stopped here for lunch on our road trip last week. Mackenzie was our server, and she was very efficient and friendly. We had very good food with catfish, wedge salad, shrimp and corn bisque, gumbo, Caesar salad with shrimp, and several good cocktails. Our son had the gumbo which he said was good but not as good as the best he has had. Our shrimp and corn bisque was absolutely delicious. I would love to have that again. We were in the dining room, which was a very lovely room with nice windows looking out to the lake. The outside dining upstairs has a better view of the lake, but it was still very nice. We wanted to stay in the air-conditioning. This is a good place to frequent if you live close.

Yelp
We love the atmosphere here, especially sitting outside on a beautiful day. We had a great experience at the bar downstairs with great, affordable drinks, but we were unable to order food so we decided to go upstairs to grab a bite to eat. We sat outside because it was a gorgeous day and decided to we wanted to try the charbroiled oysters. We ordered a full dozen to spilt between 2 of us. When we received the oysters it was nice that they split the oysters on 2 separate plates for us. The oysters were super tiny. They may have been a little overcooked which could have caused them to shrink, regardless, they should have either mentioned that the oysters are running small or not charge full price ($26). They tasted "ok", we've had better. We expect much more from a "Gallagher" restaurant. We will be back since we love the atmosphere and drinks, but we won't be getting the oysters!

Yelp
This is my favorite spot on the Mandeville lakefront. The food here is spectacular, the drinks are good, the service is prompt and polite, and you can't beat the view. From casual drinks on a Saturday afternoon to a quiet night just having dinner, this place checks all the boxes.

Yelp
Very nice restaurant with views of the lake on second floor. We enjoyed the Caesar salad with a cup of bisque. I had the frog legs that were good, not a lot of flavor but helped by a nice remoulade. We topped it off with a half dozen jalapeño bacon grilled oysters. They were really good. Great service and a nice outdoor experience.
google avatar

Brittany B.

Yelp
Service was great even though the restaurant was super busy. We ordered off of the Tammany Tase of Summer menu. I got the shrimp jalapeño popper soup, the gulf fish almondine, and the ooey gooey cake. The gulf fish was delicious; the fish was fresh, and the butter sauce was super flavorful. My soup was good. However, I couldn't taste the jalapeño, and it didn't taste very different from regular shrimp & corn bisque. The ooey gooey cake almost reminded me of a bread pudding. I loved that it was served warm. As far as the drink goes, I was slightly disappointed in my spritz because it was definitely watered down. My girlfriends and I could tell there wasn't much alcohol despite the description. Overall, it was a nice evening together.
google avatar

Yelp
It's great place to stop at in the summer or spring and sit on the porch and eat oysters or order a martini. My man and I bike down at the lakefront and we like to stop there halfway through. It's a beautiful view with great service and food.
google avatar

Cassie M.

Yelp
Some of the best charbroiled oysters around! The bbq shrimp and shrimp platter were good - nothing spectacular, and the service was good as well. This is the perfect place to relax outside on the spacious patio when the weather is good. The view of the lake is just perfect!
google avatar

Ken B.

Yelp
The place is beautiful, great outdoor views of the lakeshore and the food was great. The lobster roll special was delicious and the lobster was cooked to perfection. I can't recall his name but the guy working the outdoor bar at ground level was extremely personable and gave great recommendations before we headed inside for our reservation. We will definitely be back!
google avatar

Molly B.

Yelp
Lakefront-historic-scenic-local-fun-and excellent cuisine...all in one two story building. It's not just a tourist spot, lots of locals are here enjoying the entire scene! Great service from Adrianna, even on this sunny busy day on the patio!
google avatar

Yelp
Went to Pat's for lunch last Friday to use a gift card we had gotten last Christmas. The food and service were spot on! I ordered the fish Almondine which was pompano. It was fabulous! It came topped with crabmeat and just enough almonds for crunch! It was buttery without being oily and cooked to perfection! My husband had the skirt steak and fries. He was not a fan of the marinade they used (it was heavy on the Worcestershire sauce) I thought it was fine. Our waiter was very friendly and knowledgeable of the menu items. They had a seasonal drink menu, but I went with a $5 martini special. The ambience is very nice, but it was just a bit chilly. All in all a spectacular meal.

Yelp
If you don't stop here when you visit Mandeville, you're missing out! We sat in the bar, and what a great decision! Austin the bartender had only been there a few days and his coworker Noel were just awesome! They are what you wish for when you sit at the bar any restaurant. Attentive, friendly and in no time we felt like we were locals. The chargrilled oysters were our starter. Best I have ever had, and I'm from Louisiana, so I've had them everywhere. Because we overheard the comments of others, we decided to order the Lobster Rolls. My, my, my. Huns got the hot, I got the cold. They were AMAZING! We expected the actual Lobster meat to be sparse. Nope. It was plentiful, so much so that I could not even eat all of mine. Pat Gallagher is THU MAN!!
google avatar

Yelp
Pat's Rest Awhile is in a great location on the Mandeville lakefront. We went for dinner on a Friday night and were seated immediately. Ordered an appetizer from the specials, the fried crab claws, and they were delicious. For my entree, ordered the cedar plank gulf fish which I believe was the red drum. The fish was tender and the sauce and green beans were tasty! The tiger-rita was pretty (top yellow and bottom purple) and refreshing! I will definitely be back to explore the cocktail and food menu!

Yelp
Very yummy and delicious. The pasta was very good and the Mac and cheese as well. The food was fast. I'm still eating it.
google avatar

Paul B.

Yelp
Historic buildings and fantastic food. One of a kind place. The broiled oysters were better than I found in New Orleans.
google avatar

Nichole M.

Yelp
Came to have raw oysters only to be denied service and kind acknowledgment by the bartender. Yes they gave us menus. Yes they told us that they're short-staffed and is holiday but they did not come back for another half hour while we waited. Was never able to order drinks and never came back to ask us if we need anything. They wait on three other people arrived after us. Never had conversation. Never asked how we were doing. Never asked if we're needing. Unacceptable. Do not spend your money here.

Yelp
Pat's is a beautiful place to go and enjoy the views of the lake and have lunch or a cocktail. However, the service and food could use some work. My party was seated indoors promptly but waited for a solid 10-15 minutes for someone to come take our drink order. We ordered our drinks with two appetizers and the daily lobster roll special. The two appetizers (the beet salad and the pate) were fantastic but the lobster roll was seriously lacking. The lobster itself tasted fishy and the roll was completely devoid of any sort of garnish or sauce. It was literally fishy tasting lobster on bread. Anything to mask the fishiness (a wedge of lemon, aiolie, a lemongrass cream sauce) would have earned it another star. Actual fresh lobster would have earned it five stars.

Yelp
Such a nice spot we found via a TikTok review (can't remember the creator but s/o to them!) the staff was super friendly and accommodating. We started with the regular chargrilled oysters and jumbo lump crab cake, and the oysters were a solid 4/5, but that crab cake...my GOD! So tasty and literally just enough breading to hold it together. The lump crab meat is really the star (which I deeply appreciate) 4.7777/5 I had two mango Cajun ladies for my drink, and they had just enough spice to overset the fruitiness. It was delicious. For our entrees, we got the lobster roll and the gulf fish. The lobster roll was a bit watery so I'd rate it a 2.5 ish/5, but the fries had such a nice crisp to them. I only had a few bites of the fish but a solid 3.5/5. Overall, great food with great ambiance. We sat outside and it was a perfectly overcast day with a light breeze. DEFINITELY will be going back!!
google avatar

Brandelyn C.

Yelp
Nice place to enjoy a wonderful meal with a beautiful view. Service is excellent. Will be going back!

Yelp
Great food. Great service. Awesome little spot. Def will be going back again soon! The crabcake was a+

Yelp
It took nearly 15 mins after being sat for anyone to come to our table. Then when our server came to the table she admitted her mistake of not coming to our table sooner. However, even after that she still didn't really do anything to make the experience better. The to top it all off the food, shrimp and catfish platter, was mediocre at best. Definitely not a great experience for a first time visit.

Yelp
An avid fan of all of Pat Gallagher's restaurants, this was my third visit to Rest Awhile, and every visit gets better and better. I'm horribly gluten intolerant, and on top of a gluten-free menu, there are items on the menu marked where they can be made gluten free. I've never had a reaction from cross-contamination. The other night, we met one of my best friends and her husband for dinner. They frequent the lakefront but didn't know about this restaurant. My friend ordered the tuna, her husband and my husband each ordered the steak, and I had the almondine (sans almonds - they contain gluten). We also had a cup of the shrimp and corn bisque, which - per usual, was incredible. They don't skimp out on the shrimp, either. Our waitress was very attentive and provided excellent service. The four of us thoroughly enjoyed our food and cocktails. My friend commented on how soon she plans on coming back, and she especially loved the charm the restaurant has. If you're coming before or around sunset, reserve a table by the window. There are stellar views of the lakefront, and if it's a sunny day, it's absolutely beautiful.

Yelp
We started the meal with an outstanding bloody Mary and the shrimp & corn soup, which was really good. The burger & shrimp platter were also very good. However, our server, Madeleine B was outstanding. She was very pleasant and knowledgeable about the restaurant hours (which we questioned because we had attempted to dine twice at different hours). She was well above average & really very welcoming.
google avatar

Sandra K.

Yelp
I would have given a 5 star but wanted to warn everyone that extra shots in your drinks my cost more than the drink itself. We loved watching the Saints while sitting outside last Sunday. The stag were friendly and attentive. The food was amazing. The frozen drink were great and only $7 on Football Sundays. But be warned that an extra shit cost me $8 each. I was floored when I saw my bill. My bad for not asking but I never would have guessed they would cost more than the drink itself. Lesson learned! Ask before you get a pour!

Yelp
We sat outside today it was overcast so pretty enjoyable but for me that's where it ended. We go there at least once a month. I always order the pork chop with pecan glaze and it's always yummy. I asked for it medium and it came out overdone. Hardly any pecans in the sauce and the sauce had a burned taste. I asked for green beans instead of potatoes so double order of green beans...only one portion on plate. The pork chop was also a weird shape definitely a cheaper cut as it was tough and chewy. Therefore my fave meal there was a total letdown. I mentioned it to our waitress she said that's how it always is and if it had a funny taste maybe it was because it was on the grill with something else. She was a good server no real complaint there but I'm really just disappointed in the food.
google avatar

Kerry A.

Yelp
The food & service was EXCELLENT! We celebrated our 25th anniversary by sunset on the patio. The Chef (Billie) came out to say hello... which was such a personal touch. Pat's Perfect Storm is an ahhhmazing drink.

Michelle P.

Yelp
I was with two other people for lunch. They had raw oysters as their entrée, and I had a salad with grilled shrimp. By the time my salad arrived, my lunch companions had finished their oysters. Additionally, my salad cost $21. It was mostly lettuce and had four shrimp on it. The add-on price for the shrimp was $12, which is $3 per shrimp!
google avatar

Rickey B.

Yelp
This time of the year is great for sitting outside. Good food with a view of the lake.
google avatar

Darlene H.

Yelp
The food was just so so. We went for Sunday brunch and had reservations. The place was packed. Crazy busy and noisy. The waitress Jordan was very pleasant but kinda hard to find her when our Table all Needed refills On water. She was pleasant to announce the days special of soft shell crab. They were not huge as she said and greasy greasy. My friend got sick when she got home. The other people had the tuna, one the almondine and one the fried shrimp platter. They said the were good. The onion rings were also very greasy. We enjoyed our $5 bloody Mary's and left. Disappointed.
google avatar

Trey B.

Yelp
On a nice weekend afternoon, the outdoor area is fabulous. This is a very unique and historic property. A wide variety on the menu. They have great fried seafood, oysters on the half shell and grilled. Good burger, hangar steak and pork chop. Fish almondine and more. It as upscale food as the other excellent pat Gallagher restaurants, but it's very good. Oh, try the onion rings!
google avatar

John R.

Yelp
One word, disappointing. We've visited a few times and unimpressed with the tough, over cooked hangar steak, limp greasy fries, and tasteless pasta. Top that off with a staff that looks like they would rather be anywhere else and rude hostess, you have a real recipe for quality. The location is great but the food and service are disappointing especially when you're spending $$$$ for a meal. Also don't visit on a Sunday and attempt to get a table outside, long waits even though there are plenty of open tables.

Sue K.

Yelp
We just returned home after one of the worst dinners I have ever had. We were celebrating an early birthday for my husband with my two kids and three grandchildren. We arrived at the restaurant at 5:30 and ordered drinks and appetizers. After they were brought to the table, we ordered our meals. An hour and a half later, we still did not have our food. Our server then came to the table to apologize and tell us that they no longer had boiled crawfish, which both my son and daughter had ordered. In the time that we were waiting for our food (well over an hour), many peopled arrived and were served crawfish before we received ours. In fact, they served three trays of crawfish to customers who arrived after us at the same time they were telling us that there were no more. My son and daughter decided not to order a new meal as we were told that the remaining food was almost ready. This was, in fact, a lie as we waited an additional 30 minutes for our food to arrive. It was finally delivered to our table over 2 hours after we had arrived at the restaurant. We boxed the meals and left. It was apparent that our food order was never placed or lost in the kitchen. When my husband asked to see a manager, he was directed to the "assistant manager." She brought us a minimal gift card in light of the fact that our bill was $250! Suffice it to say, they have lost a customer.

Lexie V.

Yelp
Food was just okay. Not worth the money you pay. Shrimp didn't seem fresh and seemed frozen. Not what you would expect. Service wasn't that great. All the seafood was underwhelming to say the least. Best thing on the menu was the cheese burger.

Elizabeth A.

Yelp
Worse service ever! The food was presentable but not real tasty. Ambiance is nice as long as you aren't sitting outside in the sun. Did I say worse service ever....

Josh G.

Yelp
Went there for lunch today. Outdoor seating is where it's at. Our server, Adrianna, killed it. Super attentive, even after we paid. Highly recommend the pork chop, BBQ Shrimp, and dessert old fashioned. Everything we got was great!
google avatar

Kellie D.

Yelp
Great Ambiance. Casual or dressy casual. Hangout on the patio and enjoy the sunset. Many different outlets - bar, oyster bar, restaurant . Ride your bike to it. Plan a party - lovely and versitale.

Brittany D.

Yelp
We came on Saturday March 22 for my daughters birthday. The portions were extremely small. I got the shrimp platter and my husband got the fish and shrimp platter. The food runner accidentally mistook the fish and shrimp for the shrimp platter bc that's how small the fish was on the plate. We couldn't even see the fish. We also found a hair in my daughter's kids burger. Also our reservation was for 12 and our food didn't come out until 1:30. Our server was great but the food was terrible.
google avatar

Marie K.

Yelp
Service was great...food definitely not up to par...crabmeat on fish not fresh...chargrilled oysters over cooked Next time will go to RIPS for lakefront dining.
google avatar

David R.

Yelp
2nd visit same result.. Staff is extremely rude at hostess stand, they act like their shit don't stink.. I'm pretty sure these are managers.. talk about after a hour wait food is just average, small portions and over priced.. can't believe Pat owns this place.. he should be ashamed. Don't waste your time waiting over a hour for this place, Go to Rips instead way better service and food.

Yelp
PLEASE Pat, keep the Lobster Roll on the permanent menu...It was a special today and it was fabulous!!! Thank you..We have not had any good options for Lobster rolls on the Northshore or even the Southshore, until now...I will admit to being a snob when it comes to this traditional New England dish. Pat does an excellent job here, using Maine lobster NOT Caribbean. The bun is buttered & grilled to perfection. The waitress said it would be more New England style, cold, Mayo-salad based. However, I was pleasantly surprised that it came out more Connecticut style, warm & buttery. If you have never had one, I promise you will not be disappointed and is the closest to any original from the Northeast. Maybe even better!!! Please order or request so Pat can keep it on the menu..

Eugene C.

Yelp
Great place to have a drink with friends but don't order the "gulf fish" $27 for Tilapia. Been in the business long enough to know what I was eating...
google avatar

Tanya O.

Yelp
Highly recommend!!! The service was fantastic and the food is delicious!! We had Malory as our server and she was great! She took her time with us, offered recommendations and you could tell she enjoyed sharing the cuisine with us. We ordered a few appetizers (charbroiled oysters, barbecue shrimp and hush puppies) and they were all delicious. We also got the swordfish and coffee creme brûlée. Soooo good!!
google avatar

Olivia N.

Yelp
The food was very delicious. I personally had the hanger steak and the marinade on it was phenomenal. It was cooked to a very pretty medium rare. I also had some of the appetizers and tried my family's food. The crab cakes were definitely a table favorite. Overall great food and would go again.
google avatar

Maria L.

Yelp
I hate when a restaurant with a great view has terrible food. Pat's has great food!! Arrived at 5pm, changed to outdoor seating and it was Perfect. Din already going g down. The BBQ shrimp were well cooked w accompanied Caen bread. The fish almondine was so buttery and perfect w slivered almonds and a fistful Of crabmeat. We are saving the banana foster bread pudding for a late dessert at home. Great martinis too.

Yelp
Really wanted to love this place. Love all of Pat's other places. Off the start it was down hill. Made a reservation, didn't know I would be yelled at twice by servers for wanting to sit outside. Only need reservation to sit inside, outside first come first serve (fyi). Menu looked great and got excited over crawfish. Told it was about 30-35 minute wait. I was ok with that, ordered a bunch of appetizers and drink to hold. Waited about an hour and asked for an update and was told it was ready and will be out shortly, then another 30 minutes went by. This is when I saw a table across from me that have arrived about 30 minutes ago eating a bunch of crawfish. I was still waiting. This is the point when I was a little irritated. The server and manager only gave excuses. I paid the bill minus the crawfish I never got after 2 hours. I really wanted to love this place especially with the view.

Yelp
We had family in town on a beautiful Sunday afternoon and decided to go to Pat's for our lunch. My wife and I had been to Pat's one time before (being new to the area) and we enjoyed it that a second time was warranted. While they take reservations (which we made as a just in case) we were hoping to wing it and be able to get in without. This plan didn't work out so we decided to wait 30-40 minutes for a table outside and cancelled the reservations. We went to the bar and were pleasantly surprised when they called us for our table 5-10 minutes later. Our server greeted us and we waited a time before she came back to check on us for appetizers which we ordered. The order was delivered by another server so again, we waited a time before the server returned to take our food order. The server was very pleasant and helped us out a bit because we had some questions about substituting on our order which were handled as we would have liked. While I do not know how kitchens work but our food was taking a little longer than I would have expected. In the meantime our table ordered some more drinks and one of the drinks didn't show and we were wondering about it. Our server finally came to our table and explained they were changing out kegs and were experiencing problem with the switch. We changed to another brand and still waited a bit to have it brought to the table. When our food arrived 3of the 4 entrees were good. The steak that was ordered was way overcooked. For a time no one came to check on how our food was and when our server showed I told her about the steak and she removed it to return to kitchen. She came back and said they were cooking another to make up for the first one. While this worked I was hoping they would not charge us for this meal as we were now pressed for time. While eating one of the bus boys came by the table and dropped something (a sauce?) on the ground which would up getting on my wife's pants and leg and our guest's sweater. Nothing was said to us nor did someone ask us about it until a different staffer (who saw it happen) asked came up and tried to help us out and also apologize. A short time later the bus boy who dropped the tray came to our table to apologize. We got the steak to go (being pressed for time) and when I received the check we were charged for the beer that was never delivered along with the replacement which was promptly corrected. As for visiting again we will probably do so but I will be more on my toes which I feel I shouldn't have to do at a place as Pat's. The main thing the struck me the most was no manager ever came to our table!

Yelp
I really like this place. First, the location is perfect. It looks fancy, but it's so Laid back and casual. Make reservations - hint .... The bar area is cool for evenings- well, because it's cooler- temperature wise. I like to dine inside- the waiters I've had are hilarious. It's a fun time & really good food!

Yelp
We stopped here for an afternoon drink and appetizers. The oysters are great but the atmosphere is what makes this place fantastic. It is a great renovation of a historic building that the lakefront needed. It is located directly across from the lakefront gazebo and is a great place to watch the sunset or anytime to enjoy lake breezes. The shrimp and crab claws were tasty too.

Yelp
5 star for service. Our server, Emily, was a gem. 5 star for ambiance. Beautiful restaurant, great location. 0 star for food. Rice in gumbo was way under cooked. Crunchy. Had to scoop it out. Shrimp was way over cooked. Very rubbery. Left most in the bowl. Crawfish cakes were way over breaded. Literally could count the number of crawfish on one hand. This had potential to be a nice dish. Crawfish are cheap. Use them. I really wanted a meal to enjoy. However........
